CARBON FOOTPRINT• A carbon footprint is "the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 

caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product".

A Carbon Footprint is made up of two parts:• The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 .

• The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions

The pie chart above shows the main elements whichmake up the total of a typical person's carbon footprint in the developed world.

GREENHOUSE GASES ARE INDISPENSIBLE

• One-third of the solar energy is reflected directly back to space

• Remaining two-thirds is absorbed by the surface and, to a lesser extent, by the atmosphere

• To balance Earth radiates the same amount of energy back to space

• But the Earth is much colder than the Sun, it radiates at much longer wavelengths

• Atmosphere acts as a one way valve.

• The two most abundant gases in the atmosphere, nitrogen and oxygen exert almost no greenhouse effect

• But gases such as CH4 & CO2 are green house gases.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT IS NOT A BAD

The temperature of the surface of the Earth would be -18°C, instead of the actual value of about 15°C

MAIN WORRY

• The amount of radiation which escapes depends on the concentration of 

greenhouses gases in the atmosphere.

• Earth’s Temperature has increased by 0.6°C ± 0.2°C over the last century

PROBLEM
