MUNICIPAL electricity and ener-gyworkers say theywill only goback to work full-time when themetro pays them the scarceskills allowance that was prom-
ised to them during negotiations with Samwu.
Samwu regional secretaryMqondisi Nodong-we said the interruption of services caused bythe alleged illegal strike would continue if themetro did not fulfil its promises to its workers.Nodongwe was responding to a press state-
ment by municipal spokesperson MthubanziMniki on Monday which said the municipalitywasworkingaround the clock tomake sure thatemployees of its electricity and energy director-ate who were on an illegal strike resumed theirduties immediately.Mniki said that since last Friday some em-
ployees in thedirectoratehadbeenon the illegalstrike, basedondissatisfactionwith issues relat-ed to allowances.“This strikehasplaced considerable strain on
the services that the directorate renders to thepublicandhascauseddelaysinattendingtoelec-tricity related problems because of the absence
of dedicated staff to dealwith them,”Mniki said.Nodongwe, however, said the metro had
caused this problem as city manager MpiloMbambisa had reneged on his word to pay theworkers their scarce skills allowance.“This is not an illegal strike. These workers
are not office-bound but are field workers. Astrike involves a toyi-toyi or march and theworkers are doingnothing of the sort. This is anongoing engagement by union leaders andman-agement and workers are simply at their depotwaiting to hear the outcome,” said Nodongwe.Nodongwe said that after a mass strike by
Samwu on July 16, the metro had promised topay back the scarce skills allowance on July 31.“TheyarenowsayingtheycanonlypayworkersonAugust15.That’swhattheworkerswantclar-ity on,” said Nodongwe.According to Mniki, a delegation led by the
portfolio chairpersonof infrastructureandengi-neering, councillor Andile Mfunda, met thestriking employees on Monday in a bid to findcommonground. “Themeetingwas progressiveand we hope to have a solution that will lead tonormality before Friday,” said Mfunda.– REPORTER

ITwill take fourmore years to relocatemanga-nese ore and tank farm facilities, the cityman-ager told DA councillor Dean Biddulph.Municipal Manager Mpilo Mbambisa said
Transnet had committed to a new date to com-plete relocation by June 2019.Mbambisa said Economic Development,
Tourism and agriculture directorate and theMandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA)are working proactively with Transnet.According to Mbambisa, the metro’s envi-
ronmental healthwas responsible formonitor-ing the relocation and Transnet has been com-plying with a monthly monitoring test whichthey submit to environmental health.Biddulph said it would appear to the casual
observer that Transnet frequently moves the
time frames. “This is something that has beenon thecity radar foranumberofyears. Iunder-stand that Transnet has experienced complica-tions and it’s been difficult because of intensecommissioning and decommissioning of envi-ronmental studies needed. There is also an en-vironmental study that needs to be done to al-low for construction in the new facilities, butthis is also something thathasbeenkept on thedash board of the metro,” said Biddulph.Mbambisa said in response to Biddulph’s
questions that the new facilities must be builtat the Port of Ngqura. He said the land wouldthen be used for motor vehicle export and an-other piece of land had been allocated for ama-rina/commercial development in the port ofPort Elizabeth.

A 3-year plan to fill critical vacancies with tenartisan positions already advertised accordingto the Infrastructure and Engineering director-atewas promised to curb the ongoing problemsat Despatch. This comes after DA councillor Francois
Greyling demanded to know why his area hasbattled with water supply and water loss forover four years.Greyling in hismotion to council said the sit-
uationwas largely due to themunicipality’s in-ability and lack of will to fill critical vacanciesin the plumbing directorate who can undergopreventativemaintenanceandensure faster re-pair turnaround times. “In addition, to add in-
sult to injury, the automatic inlet regulatorsthat should regulate thewater flow into the res-ervoir and shut off when it is full are non-exis-tentandhavetobedonemanually forwhichthelack of staff posts an additional handicap. Thelack of competent trained staff and sufficient la-bour over burdens our current incumbentswhichalso results in injuries aswell as lowmo-rale.”The InfrastructureandEngineeringdirector-
ate however promised that at least one of theArtisan positions advertised would be identi-fiedforDespatchwiththefillingofSuperintend-ent positions also freeing existing artisanswhoare in acting positions. – REPORTER

AGAINST South African Weather Services’advice theMetro decided to reopen cemeteriesfor bereaved families to bury their loved ones, said Metro spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki.
Mniki said they had reopened the Matanzi-ma,Kabah,MissionvaleandMotherwell ceme-teries but the Gerald Smith Cemetery wouldremain closed for now.
“This decision has been taken following sitevisits on July 24, bymunicipal Parks andCem-etery officials to all municipal cemeteries inNelson Mandela Bay to assess the latest situa-tion around the flooding challenge and the lev-el of improvement that has set in since July23.
Mniki said the Municipality’s primary con-cern was to ensure that bereaved families canbury their loved ones in safety and dignity.
“However, inspections have satisfied the in-stitution that, unless the situation changesdrastically, the flood problem in some of therecentlyclosedmunicipal cemeterieshassuffi-ciently improved toallow themtobe reopened.
Mniki saidwhile thiswas against the adviceof the South African Weather Services, whichpredictedheavyrains for thepastweekend,Ju-ly 24-25; they felt it was the right thing to doto reopen the cemeteries where the situationhas improved. “TheMunicipalitywillmonitorthe situation on an ongoing basis,” he added.
Thebadlywaterlogged cemeteries due to therecent heavy rains were closed for two daysfrom July 22.
UndertakersVantyiandVantyi inZwide,Al-goa Funeral Services, as well as Shweme Zil-amkhonto inNjoli, said the closure of cemeter-ies by themetrohadnot hadany effect on theirbusiness.
“This information has been communicatedto burial societies, which will in turn commu-nicate the news to bereaved families. The Mu-nicipality will quickly communicate with theaffected people or societies if there is anychange in the current position,” said Mniki.– REPORTER

grootste bekommernis is haar tweejarigekleinseun.

THE Eastern Cape’s aerospace industry in Nel-son Mandela Bay is taking off thanks to severalnew developments.
The project received an additional boost lastweek when CDC signed a memorandum of un-derstanding(MOU)withtheNationalAerospaceCentre.
“This is an important next step to advance therealisation of job creation and economic growth
through the sky economy,” said Mogamad Sad-ick Davids, CDC Business Development Manag-er.
Earlier this year they announced plans to un-lock a “sky economy” with a R3.67 billion cargoairport and the establishment of an aerospaceand advanced manufacturing industrial clusterattheCoegaIndustrialDevelopmentZone(IDZ).
Last week CDC released projections of the so-cial and economic impact of the project alongwith the new agreement of cooperation for thedevelopment.
three and four the investments will exceed theR1 billion per annum mark.
“We believe that 10 080 construction jobs canbecreated, operational jobswilloffer8600oppor-tunities, and indirect jobs will amount to 13 500,”said Davids.
Davids said there had been growing and posi-tive support for the construction of this secondairport in Nelson Mandela Bay and the estab-lishment of aerospace and advanced industrialmanufacturing industries.
“Local investors, such as Western Cape de-fence firms, and international investors, such asgreenfield strategy exploration companies, aswell as letters of intent from other domestic andinternational investors, are fuelling the develop-ment of the project,” said Davids.
“Todate,wehavereceivedinvestmentpropos-als between R300 million in year one to
R1 billion over a protracted period,” he said.Through the newly-formed partnership, Coe-
ga and the NAC will work towards the develop-mentofseveralaeronautical facilities, includingan airfield with a 2 400 m runway/landing strip, amaintenance, repairandoverhaul (MRO)facil-ity for second tier aircraft manufacturers, a
manufacturing park that will support researchand development (R&D) through local and inter-national academic institutes, and other projectsrelated to advanced defence and aerospace man-ufacturing industries.
Both Coega and the NAC believe the initiativeis aligned with South Africa’s National Develop-ment Plan and the Industrial Policy Action Plan(IPAP).
“The existing expertise, skilled labour and lo-gistics services from the Eastern Cape’s automo-tive and manufacturing industries are impor-tant strategic advantages supporting aeronauti-cal and aerospace manufacturing in the region,”said Professor Richard Haines, head of Develop-ment Studies at NMMU.
“The region is well equipped to welcome in-vestors such as Embraer, Bombardier, BeechAircraft, Boeing, Airbus and other American,European, Russian and Asian investors for themanufacturing of aircraft, helicopters, aero-space engines, auxiliary equipment, and partsand propulsion units. It has already shown howit competes globally with manufacturingthrough the presence of VWSA, GMSA, Ford,Mercedes Benz and FAW,” Haines said.

WHAT was simply a hobby for an 18-year-old schoolboy, earned him third place in aninternational filmmaking competition.
NaeemAlly, a grade 11 learner at Nizami-ye Al-Azhar Institute in Malabar, took achance by entering Infomatrix - an Interna-tional Informatics Project Competition foryoung people, and ended up achieving theoverall third place in Romania.
Over 2500 partici-pants from 60 countriestook part, with only 357entries qualifying forthe finals.
The topic for the shortmovie was “Theft” andthe entrants had to helpviewers understandthat theft is unlawfuland immoral, and notjust produce an actionmovie with theft beingthe focus.
The time limit of themovie was a minimumof 3 minutes and a maxi-mum of 10 minutes.
“I decided to highlight two roles, namelypetty theft which we encounter daily, andthen I also took it a step further and incor-porated Aids - which is theft of life,” ex-plained Naeem.
The young man, who is passionate abouthorses and photography, has been shootingvideos from a young age, yet this projectwas his first fully fledged short movie.
The movie, called “Through the Cracks”,is about a young boy who learns that hisbrother has Aids.
Their parents cannot afford treatment forhis brother, and the boy decides to steal thecellphone of a classmate to pay for the treat-ment.
The eight main characters and extrasconsisted of Naeem’s classmates and teach-ers.
Naeem did all the camera work and edit-ing by himself.
“It was quite a challenge to get it all doneduring school work and before the competi-tion, but luckily I had the support of my
school and that made iteasier.”
His teacher, Yasin Fer-man Gul, who was hischaperone on his trip toRomania, assisted Naeemwith the planning, story-board and script, and alsoplayed a part in themovie.
“He was really good. Hedid everything much bet-ter than expected, and itwas a privilege to helphim with this project. Theschool is very proud ofhim,” Gul said.
While he is not aimingon being the next Spiel-
berg in Hollywood, he would love to carryon with filmmaking as a hob competitionsin future.
He plans on studying Veterinary Scienceafter school.
While Naeem walked away with thebronze medal, it was Germany that tookfirst place and Mexico came in second.

Terwyl sy oor-see was, het sygeskryf: “Diehitte (in Indië)was ondraag-lik. Dankie togvir lugversor-ging! Die koswas ook nogalongewoon, soek het maar (ge-lukkig) op
brood, aartap-pels en roomys
oorleef. Ek moet sê,ek het nog nooit in
my lewe teen so baieuitstekende spelers

ACOUSTIC music aficionados and fans of thecello, accordion, mandolin, double bass, banjoand guitar will be thrilled to encounter Centre-stage as you have never seen them before intheir latest tribute to the MTV unplugged phe-nomenon, set to open a two-weekend run atOldGrey on 31 July.
Based on the concept of taking artists fromdifferent genres and getting them to recreatetheir songs using only acoustic instruments,Centrestage Unplugged will revitalise some ofthemost famousMtvUnpluggedperformances.Alsoincludedaresongsbyartistswhonevergotto do an Mtv unplugged show, but were eitherinfluenced by that sound or would have been aperfect match.Popular acoustic virtuoso and Neil Young
sound-alike Alan Kozak fronts the 8-piece un-plugged band which is crammed with PE’s topvocalists and multi instrumentalists. These include starlets Megan Du Toit and
Claire Venn, Wayne Kallis in a more subduedrole than usual, the versatile Hugo Kleinhans,AndrewWarneke on bass and double bass andDevon van Rooyen on sympathetic percussion.Anexciting first-time-everadditionof the cel-
lo in its line-up will be in the capable hands ofIan Du Toit, who recently returned to PE aftera stint of mentoring music students in the UK.The acoustic stylings have special appeal to
the band members themselves:Musical director, Wayne Kallis, says he has
always been drawn to acoustic versions ofsongs, as these when the quality, melody andthe performance itself stand out.“I’mlookingforwardtobringingitbacktothe
basics,” says Megan Du Toit. “Stripped downand honest interpretations of songs ... you canreallyappreciate thesubtlebeautyof themelod-ies and lyrics in their unplugged versions.”“It will be wonderful to get a chance to play
someof the songs that I first heard in the forma-tive stages of my music career - songs that un-doubtedlyhelpeddevelopmypassionformusic.I amalso excited to play a show that is all aboutsensitivity and musical dynamics,” enthusedbassist Andrew Warneke.“For me, acoustic music is transparent and
pure. It will always survive in whatever shapeor form because it goes straight to the heart. Inthe age of digitalmusic and video, we still wantto hear the sound of instruments built a hun-dred years ago,” says Kozak.“I have no doubt that the audience will be
blown away by the way that we have interpret-ed some of the songs.... I like it that the showisnothard-rocking,but isverymuchalisteningkind of show, lending itself to somanymusicalcolours created by the beautiful vocals and in-strumentation,” adds drummer Devon VanRooyen. For Claire Venn, the show is all about nostal-
gia, “Doingsomeofmyall-time favourite songs, all unplugged, is definitely something I have al-ways wanted to do. Being able to do that withan amazing group ofmusicians, who I know al-so share my passion for a show like this, is thecherry on top for a show that’s already so spe-cial.”Loving acoustic recreations of beautiful har-
monies and rearrangements by artists such asEric Clapton, Bon Jovi, Jason Mraz, Ed Sheer-an,CrowdedHouse,AlanisMorrisette,TheCiv-il Wars, Duran Duran, Roxette, George Ezra,Crowded House, Neil Young, Crosby Stills andNash, The Dixie Chicks, REM, Nirvana, Mel-issa Etheridge, Rod Steward, Soul Asylum andNeil Young can be expected.‘Centrestage Unplugged’ runs at Old Grey on

THE SA Bachelor and Bachelorette competi-tion seeks candidates who possess brains, beauty, entrepreneurship and the spirit ofUbuntu.
Ivan Green from Port Elizabeth is one of theeight remaining finalists in this national com-petition and the only one from the EasternCape. He believes that he has both the skillsand determination to compete against partici-pants from the larger Metropolitan areas.
The annual competition, which supportsfive different charities, has placed its focus onchildren this year. These include the Jacaran-da Children’s Home, Louis Botha Children’sHome, Cansa, Food Bank South Africa and
Amadea Safe House.Green considers our country’s future to lie
in the hands of children, and that they will in-herit the country aided with knowledge fromtheir predecessors’ examples.
“I am a big believer in assisting the commu-nity, but how many people help to look afterthe children that aren’t theirs?” he said.
Hisbackgroundofcommunityservice isare-sult of his parents’ involvement in Rotary Gra-hamstown. The SA Bachelor and Bachelorettefinalist became motivated to participate incompetitions that placed emphasis on charitywork and raising community awareness, afterhis grandfather passed away due to cancer.
Green, who was also a finalist in Die Burg-er/Boardwalk Mr PE competition last year, iscurrently training for the International Body
Fitness Federation (IBFF) 2016 competitionand enjoys a multiplicity of sporting and out-door activities. His involvement in cricketand running, in particular, will aid his at-tempt to raise funds for his campaign in thecompetition.
Green has planned to host a full day of ac-tion cricket where teams pay a fee in order toplay. Furthermore, he also hopes to partici-pate in sponsored running races. “I would runa race every single time one came up, but itwon’t help if I don’t have people behind mesupporting the children.”
Despite the competition’s connotations ofpageantry, Green states that beauty is not aprerequisite for takinghome the title, and thatjudging is rather based on innovation in rela-tion to gaining sponsors and donations. At the
same time, his career in sales has taught himnetworking skills and how to sell himself.
Green believes that his fellow finalists areworthy competitors due to their shared goalsin community work. “I’d like to show the restof South Africa that no matter where youcome from, we as South Africans can come to-gether for certain causes and make a differ-ence.”
If you would like to support Ivan’s cause, you can contact him for queries anddonationsat [email protected], follow him on Fa-cebook at IvanGreen – SABachelor andBach-elorette or vote for him by sending an SMSwith the words “Ivan Green” to 35959 (R3/sms).

Suffering from back
pain or muscle pains?
Try Lifetones!THE FOLLOWING IS A
TRUE STORY:
“...a year ago, my whole life
changed.” - Alison
Hi, my name is Alison and I live in Hilton in the Natal
Midlands. This is my LIFETONES story:
I was diagnosed with SCOLIOSIS many years ago, and as
a result I've lived with constant back pain. I've never been
big on pain killers so I've battled through as much as I can
without them. Then two years back I was diagnosed with
FIBROMYALGIA - another ailment adding to muscular pain
- which made it unbearable to try and sleep at night. The
constant pain running down the back and the sides of my
legs was just too much. I just didn't know which position to
get into to be comfortable. My doctor prescribed
CORTISONE based medications to try to reduce my
inflammation, which I wasn't very happy taking because of
the side-effects.
I lasted for about two months on CORTISONE and then
heard about LIFETONES on a radio advert. When I started
taking it approximately a year ago, my whole life changed.
Being an avid fly fisherwoman, I spend a lot of time fishing
in competitions for up to 12 hours at a time. Before
LIFETONES I would end up in so much pain in my joints
and muscles, but now, with LIFETONES, I am pain-free. I
can't live without it. Just recently I went without my
LIFETONES for about three months because I thought that
my pain was now gone and I wouldn't be needing
LIFETONES anymore. Unfortunately the pain came
straight back again, so I am back on my LIFETONES and I
feel great once more. Try it and stick with it because it won't
let you down!
The Herbal way to help you release your pain from
stiff, aching, agonizing or seizing joints andmuscles.

EFFORTS to curb a high infant mor-tality rate in the Eastern Cape areshowing promising results thanks toa partnership between the South Af-rican Breastmilk Reserve (SABR)and the Provincial Department ofHealth.Last year SABR coordinated col-
lection and redistribution of life-sav-ing donated breastmilk to 124 criti-cally sick babies in the province; thisnumber is set to increase as the pro-gramme expands.“Breastmilk is literally saving
lives in the Eastern Cape, one of theprovinces plagued with the highestnumber of infant and prematuredeaths in the country,” says StashaJordan, breastfeeding activist andexecutive director at SABR.Breastmilk is thebest andmostnu-
tritious food source for babies anddonated breastmilk is urgently re-quired to feedcritically ill andunder-weight babies who are not strongenough to feed from their ownmoth-er naturally. Out of the 124 severelyill, underweight babies that receiveddonated breastmilk in the provincelast year, only one baby did not sur-vive.SABR began distributing donated
breastmilk collected at Uitenhage’sNetcare Cuyler Hospital in 2007 in apilot facility. “The donated breast-milk has been given to critically illpremature babies at Dora Ngiza andUitenhage Provincial hospital withgreat results,” said Jordan. Doctors,
nurses and provincial health repre-sentatives have witnessed the suc-cess of the breastmilk reserve andplans are underway to roll out moreSABR corners at other hospitals inthe province.“We currently have seven SABR
facilities in the Eastern Cape; threeare fullyoperational atNetcareCuyl-er, in Uitenhage, Cecilia MakiwaneHospital in Mdantsane and DoraNginzaHospital in Port Elizabeth. StElizabethMission Hospital in Lusik-isiki and Frontier Hospital inQueenstown are recruiting donorsand are available for queries and theSABR banks at Madzikane KaZuluHospital inMountFrereandtheGen-eral Hospital in Mthatha are in thefinal stages of installation,” said Jor-dan.The new breastmilk bank at Cecel-
ia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsanealready collects 30 to 40 bottles of do-nated breastmilk from donor moth-ers in the hospital eachmonth.Nurs-ing sister NobathembuMafanya andregistered dietician Kim Venter setup the SABR breastmilk bank at thehospital inNovember last year. In itsfirst seven months the SABR bankredistributed donated breastmilk to45 babies in the hospital’s neonatalunit, many of them premature ba-bies, all weighing less than 1.8 kilo-grams. The hospital is led by a com-mitted multidisciplinary breastfeed-ing teamof healthcare professionals.“The gratitude on the faces of the
momswhose infants receive donatedbreastmilk is enough to know thatSABR ismaking a difference in theirlives,” said Venter. The donatedbreastmilk is given to underweightbabies that are too weak to breast-feed but urgently require the bestcombination of nutrients to gainstrength and full health.“I am constantly amazed that
mothers take time to donate theirbreastmilk while caring for theirown infants. We’d love it if morebreastfeeding mothers would donatebreastmilkso thatwecanexpandouroperation,” says Venter, who is pas-sionate about paediatric nutrition.“Breast really is best. There are
countless benefits of breastmilk forinfants. Feeding artificial milk topremature and low birth weight in-fants increases their risk fordevelop-ing life threatening intestinal diseas-es like necrotising enterocolitis. Itcan be avoided if a baby receivesbreastmilk,” said Venter.SABRwill continue to raise aware-
ness of breastmilk donation in theprovince. “We can only hope that wegrow bigger and better, collect copi-ous amounts of donated breast milkand are able to help many other ba-bies,” said Venter.“Weurge everyone in the province
to participate in this life-saving initi-ative,” concluded Jordan.

HOME-COOKED food like stews, casseroles andcurries are all the more satisfying in winter.
However, the seasonal delight of indulging inhearty foods does not mean that you have tospend hours in front of the stove and cause aspike in your electricity bill in winter - stovesuse much electricity and cooking accounts forup to 8% of the electricity used in an averagehousehold in South Africa.Electricity smart cooking - preparing quick
and easy recipes and using appliances that uselittle or no electricity - will allow you to savetime, effort andmoney evenwhen you decide toprepare one of your big winter favourites.A cookbook featuring electricity-saving
recipes, The 49M Cookbook, can now be down-loaded from the Eskom website. The cookbook is filled with electricity-saving
recipes that are prepared using energy efficientmethods such as one-pot cooking and electricitysaving appliances such as pressure cookers andWonderbags.One-pot meals are energy efficient because
youcookall the ingredients in onepotusing onestove plate only. Apart from the fact that it cutspreparation times and, importantly, saves youelectricity, it also takes a fraction of the time toclean up afterwards. The 49M Cookbook’s one-pot recipes include spicy chicken andbeans andsweet and sour pork.A pressure cooker’s much shorter cooking
timesmakes it one of the simplest, easiest, mostconvenient and cost-effective ways to save ener-gy in a winter kitchen. The Wonderbag, on the other hand, is even
more energy efficient. This simple heat reten-tion cooker was developed in South Africa andsaves up to 30% on the electricity you consumefor cooking. Once brought to the boil on a heatsource such as a stove plate, the warm pot con-taining the food is placed in theWonderbag andcontinuestocookslowlywithoutusinganyaddi-tional energy until finished. The cooker ismadeof two poly-cotton bags filled with either recy-cled polystyrene balls or foam chips, which pro-vide the insulation needed to complete the cook-ing process and keep the food warm. The 49M Cookbook features a host of mouth-
watering recipes prepared in a Wonderbag, in-cluding winter favourites oxtail stew withdumplings and beef and beer casserole, bothdishes requiring only 20 minutes of stove timeand a further 5 hours of slow-cooking in aWon-derbag using no electricity.High-pressure cooking the 49M way includes
recipes for Moroccan lamb shanks and quickand easy leek and potato soup; the shanks areready in 50 minutes and the leek soup in 8 min-utes. Conventionally, the shanks would need tosimmer for 3 to 4 hours on an electric hob andthe soup for 30 to 40 minutes.Visitwww.eskom.co.za/idmand click onRes-

THE Mecer Madibaz men’s hockey teamclaimed silver for the second year run-ning at the University Sport South Africatournament hosted by the University ofKwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg ear-lier this month.
“The standard was very high at thetournament and there was no easy matchin both pools,” said Madibaz hockey man-ager Cheslyn Gie.“We did extremely well with a very in-
experienced defence. We had four firstyears in our team including the goalkeep-er.”The Port Elizabeth team got their tour-
nament off to a good start by beating Kov-sies 4-1 in their opening fixture. On the second day, the team dropped
their first game, going down 1-2 to the Uni-versity of Cape Town.“Our goalkeeper was injured and had to
be substituted for two minutes and UCTscored the winning goal during thistime,” said Gie.They came back fighting on day three
to claim an impressive 9-1 victory overWits, their biggest winning margin sincethe merger in 2005.“This was a crucial match as a convin-
cing win would put us in a good positionto qualify for the semi-finals,” said Gie.In the semis, national star IgnatiusMal-
graff scored a hat-trick for the Madibaz asthey beatMaties 4-2 to qualify for the finalagainst Tuks.Maties fielded eight national players
and were the outright favourites.“We played very well and our brand of
quick counter-attack hockey put our op-position under pressure and we createdmany scoring opportunities.”In the final, the Madibaz were not able
to sustain their momentum and wentdown 3-0.“We could not lift ourselves to the same
level as we achieved against Maties,” saidGie.He said that the standout players of the

THE rise in the popularity of SUV’s as the fam-ily car has to a great extent seen the demiseof the luxury sedan as a status symbol in thedrive-way.
But the number of Mercs, BMWs and Audi’sstill out on our roads, is proof that there is stilla market for them. And now Ford has thrownthe proverbial hat in the ring, or rather span-ner in the German works by launching its ownnew luxury sedan in this market.
Competing with the Germans, Ford had tooffer something different or special to catchthe attention of those in the market for premi-um cars who are more often than not brandloyal.
Enter the Ford Fusion – which is known inEurope as the Ford Mondeo - but was renamedfor the SA market for its release here in Janu-ary.
So what makes it special or different? Hightech gadgets and very competitive pricingwhich starts at R349 900 with the top modelcosting R449 900.
The Fusion comes in three engine types, with petrol engine options being the 1.5-litreEcoBoost and 2-litre EcoBoost. It is also availa-ble with a 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine.
All models have a 6-speed automatic gear-box with Select Shift.
There are also two trim levels - the lowerspec Trend and high spec Titanium. Optionalextras are available to customise your Fusionto your needs. The vehicle test driven was the2.0 Ecoboost Titanium.
ExteriorPersonally, I think the look of the Fusion is
by far the best in its market segment. Its sleeksilhouette is eye-catching and just oozes luxu-ry. It was therefore no surprise that during myweek of test driving it, I had a number of peoplecoming up to me in parking lots wanting toknow more about this big car with the Ford em-blem.
InteriorEqually impressive is the spaciousness in-
side which can comfortably accommodate fiveadults.
In the front the big touch screen dominates.Being a bit of a gadget-phobe I found all the infodisplays and warning sounds a bit disconcert-ing at times, and you really need to be a passen-ger and not a driver with lots of time on yourhands to sit and figure out all the bells andwhistles.
Ford’s Sync 2 with 8-inch touchscreen, Blue-
tooth and Voice Control is standard in the Tita-nium models, and an optional extra on theTrend models. The touchscreen helps you set-up your phone, music and climate settings.
With Sync 2 voice-control connectivity onecan select music from an MP3 device by askingSync 2 to play an artist or track. Drivers canmake legal hands-free phone calls on commandeven when the system is in audio or anothermode.
An electronic handbrake adds to the hightech qualities of this car.
As far as safety features go, the Titaniummodels have front and rear sensors and a rear-view camera. This is available as optional ex-tras in the Trend models too.
Very impressive was the super bright head-lights showcasing Ford’s adaptive LED head-lamp technology - which is only available onthe Titanium models. These lights not only au-tomatically turn themselves on and off accord-ing to changes in the light, but can also changethe beam’s level so that it always shines on theroad even during cornering.
Enhanced Active Park Assist featuring Per-pendicular Parking is also available as an op-tion on the Titanium models.
The enhanced MyKey technology is a stan-dard feature in all four models and will enableFusion owners to programme a secondary keyto restrict some vehicle functions. It can inhib-it incoming phone calls, as well as restrict thetop speed; prevent deactivation of driver as-sistance and safety features; reduce the maxi-mum volume of the audio system, and disablethe system altogether if the driver and passen-gers are not using safety belts.
RideThe ride is smooth and powerful and the au-
tomatic gearbox does not detract from its ac-celeration or lessens its oomph.
The steering is light and precise. Petrol con-sumption is impressive for a sedan, and dur-ing the week spent with the Fusion, I found theconsumption, which is given as 8.5 litres per100km over a combined cycle, as accurate.
Its agility and lively performance make onesoon forget that this is actually quite a big vehi-cle.PRICES

WINTER storm damage can wreak hav-oc on even the most organised homeowner’s monthly budget, forcing you tolive with temporary repairs, dip intoyour savings or borrow money to effectrepairs.
But simple routine maintenance, such as cutting down rotting or precari-ously leaning trees, fixing loose rooftiles, cleaning out gutters and installingdrainage in areas that flood easily canhelp prevent common winter woes.“Sometimes there isn’t sufficient
storm damage to warrant an insuranceclaim. Even if the damage is severeenough tomake a claim it may take timeto process and you will still have to paythe excess,” explains Direct Axis’ headof marketing, Gavin Moir. This is why it’s sensible to take some
basic precautions to try to tackle themost obvious problems, even if you doneed to spend a little money to avoidhaving to spend a lot later.“Whether you’re into DIY or prefer to
hire a home handyman to help you, it’sa good idea to budget a little each monthfor routine repairs.”Another tip is that if you are doing
some renovations get the builder orhandyman to fix any nagging repairswhile they’re on site. This will general-ly be more cost-effective than callingsomeone in when the rain’s pouring in-to your lounge.Besides maintenance and emergency
repairs, putting some money aside intoa home improvement budget also givesyou the flexibility to make your home
a more comfortable winter haven. Youmay decide to install an indoor fire-place, build a games room or save onheating costs by insulating the roof.An indoor fireplace is a relatively in-
expensive addition and besides thewarmth it provides can add a great dealof atmosphere to a room. But unlessyou’re a seasoned DIY expert, don’t betempted to do it yourself or cut cornersby getting a friend’s friend to do it onthe cheap.“Rushed or badly built renovations
can end up costing more in repairs andcan detract, rather than add to the valueof your house. It’s much better to paya little more to get the work done by anexpert. After all for most people theirhome is their most valuable asset.”If you’re planning more ambitious al-
terations such as a warm winter enter-tainment room, first consider if it willreally add value to your house. Is it thesort of feature that a potential buyerwould pay a bit more to have? Before answering consider the demo-
graphics of your neighbourhood, thestyle of housing and the sales price ofsimilar homes in the area. This shouldgive you a good idea as to whether youwill be able to recoup the cost of the ren-ovations if you ever plan to sell theproperty.A good rule of thumb is not to spend
more than 25% of the value of yourhouse on renovations. If you are planning to do a renovation
there’s a useful loan calculator athttps://www.directaxis.co.za/person-al-loans-calculator.aspx which can helpyou work out what you can afford andwhat the repayments will be.

REPORTER
SINCE the unveiling last August at anevent in Stockholm, the XC90 has been at-tracting a great deal of attention thanks toits stunning design, innovative power-train programme and its redefinition ofthe connected in-car control experience.
On sale from 1 August 2015, the all-newVolvo XC90 will initially launch in SouthAfrica with the T6 and D5 derivatives.Taking the best of Volvo’s innovative
safety systemsand adding to thatlist, the XC90comes fullyequipped with theIntelliSafe pack-age as standard, delivering twoworld firsts - Run-off Road Protec-tion, and AutoBrake at Intersec-tions.“We look at real-
life accident statis-tics and study real crash scenes with ourTraffic Accident Research Team. We donot develop new safety systems or featuresto pass tests - we develop them to savelives. This is why we can confidently aimto meet our Vision 2020 goal of having noone killed or seriously injured in a newVolvo car. We believe we have developedthe safest SUV,” said Dr Peter Mertens,Senior Vice President Research & Devel-opment at Volvo Car Group.
PerformanceThe XC90 provides a broad range of pow-
er options.“Our Drive-E 4-cylinder engines deliver
a wide band of power for the XC90 in bothpetrol and diesel, front and all-wheel driveconfigurations. On top of that we are intro-ducing our no-compromise Twin Engine
technology in the XC90 T8, which delivers300kW, 470Nm and only 49g CO2/km. Itmakes the all-new Volvo XC90 the mostpowerful and cleanest premium SUV onthe market,” said Dr Mertens. The introduction of Twin Engine tech-
nology in the XC90, which was developedin cooperation with Siemens, sets a newbenchmark in terms of efficient perform-ance in the luxury SUV segment.
Intuitive TouchFeaturing a complete re-imagination of
traditional in-carcontrols, the XC90driver interface isbased on touchscreen technologyand an intuitivelytiled menu systemthat takes the effortout of personalisa-tion and interaction.Volvo’s Sensus
control system de-livers true connec-tivity with a rangeof useful cloud-
based applications and services which canbe operated via the touch screen, throughsteering wheel controls, or via the ad-vanced on-board voice control system.
New trim level strategyWith the all-new XC90, Volvo Cars are
introducing a whole new trim level sys-tem, which resembles a tree with two bran-ches. Kinetic is the base, followed by thevery competitive Momentum level.Inscription and R-Design form the two
branches on the tree. The Inscriptionpackage is designed for customers thatwant an elegant look and a luxurious expe-rience, while R-Design has a sporty and dy-namic aura. The South African line-up will consist of
Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design de-rivatives.

AFTER losing two consecutive rugby Tests injust eight days, the Springboks, though playingsome exciting stuff in patches in those 160 min-utes, must still be scratching their heads for theanswer to their lack of success.
Page back to Brisbane where, leading 20-10with 20 minutes’ play remaining, poor replace-mentdecisionsbycoachHeynekeMeyerplayeda major role in the Springboks’ undoing. Nowmove on to Jo’burg’s Ellis Park.
The scenario was much the same. After 10-10at halftime the Boks, as in the previous Test, were playing some enterprising rugby. Early inthe secondhalf they led 17-10.Dominant inmostphasesof thegame, it seemedtheywereheadingfor a comfortable victory.
But by 74 minutes on the clock they were des-perately clinging to a narrow 20-17 lead. The sit-
uation hadn’t been improved by the substitu-tion of industrious young lock Lood de Jager byFlipvanderMerwe, butworsestillwas to followfor the Boks. It was one of the oldest tricks inthe game and came at a New Zealand lineout.
Now they don’t call Richie McCaw among thefinest loose-forwardsandcaptainsNewZealandhas ever produced for nothing. And what he didwith just sixminutes toplayunderlined that be-lief. He called for a conventional lineout withone difference – a somewhat wide gap separat-ingthe front jumpers fromthose intherear.TheBoks were forced to follow suit. Just whatMcCaw wanted, the formation allowing him toghost through that gap and score almost with-out a hand impeding his progress. That was it.Game over...
Er, well, not quite. Down to 14 men at this
stage due to the sin-binning of Sam Whitelockfor a dangerous tackle, the Kiwis must havebeen delighted when because of injuries to hisfront row, Mayer was forced, after referee Ger-ome Garces had checked, to live with the rugbyparasite known as the uncontested scrum.
This, of course, was all the referee, whothroughoutcontrolledthematchwithafirmbutfair hand, could do in the circumstances, andironically in so doing brought a sudden stop totheBoks’ dominationof this area of play.Mamamia, what a disaster! From thenon, itwasmost-ly all downhill – the set-scrums area reduced tothe intensity of a girls’ basketball friendly.
In other areas, however, there was much toadmire about the Boks’ performance, bothamong the backs and up-front, where skipperSchalk Burger, hurling himself into the fray,
did his utmost to keep things going. Among thebacks fullback Willie le Roux produced mo-mentsof silkyskill andexcitement,whileHand-re Pollard and Ruan Pienaar improve at half-back with every outing. Best of all is the contin-uing excitement the young midfieldpartnership of Damian de Allende and JesseKriel, who topped a polished performance withhis first Test try.
But unless the lads in green and gold canlearnbetweennowandSeptember toput theen-tire jigsaw together with the kind of magic theKitch Christie-coached team managed in cele-brating South Africa’s re-entry into world rug-by in 1996, the World Cup this year may wellprove a bridge too far. Oh, yes, it can be doneall right – but a huge mountain of work liesahead.

FORMULA 1 headed to the Hungarian GrandPrix with a heavy heart after the passing of Ju-les Bianchi. The hope was that it could put ona show that the young Frenchman would haverevelled in. As fate would have it the Hungaror-ing saw the best and most dramatic race of theseason.
Itwasn’tasurprisetoseeLewisHamiltonandNico Rosberg lock out the front row of the grid. But the ultra-quick starting Ferraris of Sebas-tian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen turned the raceon its head from the seconds the lights extin-guished. The two scarlet Ferraris exploded offthe line and swept into first and second halfwaythrough the first lap.
Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton lost three posi-tions off the line but it was only the start of adramatic afternoon of racing. The defendingchampion would first run wide at the chicaneand later incur a drive-through penalty and losehis front-wing in a clash with Red Bull’s DanielRicciardo.
By the mid-way point of the race Vettel had
built and Raikkonen had built a nearly fifteen-second lead over Nico Rosberg which left theMercedes driver in a fairly distant third place.Ferrari looked set for a one-two finish but aMGU-K (kers) failure of Raikkonen’s car meantaneventualretirement for theFinn.Acruelendto a very good race.
Ferrari would have to face more pressure asVettel had to cope with a safety-car completelyeradicating his healthy lead after Nico Hulken-berg’s front-wing failed spectacularly, litteringturn one with shards of carbon fibre. It didn’ttake long for Rosberg to take second-place off awounded Raikkonen but again the German wasunable to make an impression on Vettel’s num-ber five Ferrari. By now Daniel Ricciardo, onthe quicker option, was catching second-placedRosberg and with a handful of laps to go lungedfor the inside line into turn one. It appeared tobe a clean move on the Aussie’s side but Ros-berg’s cut back on the exit of the corner whichensured a damaged front-wing for the Red Bulland a punctured right-rear for himself.
This incident promoted Daniil Kvyat into sec-ond and with the nifty reward of his first everF1 podium. Ricciardo recovered to third withMax Verstappen scoring an impressive fourthplace finish. This marks the first race since the2013 Brazilian Grand Prix which did not featurea Mercedes driver on the podium. McLaren’sFernando Alonso boosted the team’s moralewith a fighting fifth place finish.
It is on such dramatic days and moments thatworldchampionshipsturn.Hamiltonwasgivena helping-hand with the safety car but neededa new nose after sliding into the side of Ricciar-do at turn one. He was also given a drive-through penalty and emerged from the pitlanein twelfth. It looked for the majority of the raceasif theleadofthedriver’schampionshipwouldgo to Rosberg. Miraculously, after several inci-dents and a penalty Hamilton fought his way tosixth and extended his championship lead. Ro-mainGrosjeanfinishedseventhforLotusaheadof a recovering Rosberg who finished eighthahead of Jenson Button in ninth. Marcus Erics-son took the final point in tenth for Sauber.
UpfrontSebastianVettelserenelyledthewayfrom lights to flag. The four-time German cham-pion is now equal to Ayrton Senna on 41 victo-ries. He capped the impressive win by dedicat-ing it to the memory of Jules Bianchi.
