Water quality test results from the North End Lake reveal a marked improvement in various critical parameters, suggesting that the tide is finally turning on pollution levels which in the past have seen the lake unsuitable for swimming events where par- ticipants come into direct contact with con- taminants. According to Rhino Water director Sarel Bam, whose company was appointed by sta- dium operator Access Leisure and Facili- ties Management to conduct the organic clean-up – or bioremediation – of the lake, the toxic blue-green algae, faecal coliforms and E. coli levels dropped substantially be- tween January and March. The downward trend was significant, said Bam, and a clear indication that the North End Lake’s bioremediation was tak- ing effect in spite of a continued influx of toxins and other pollutants into the lake. He added that anecdotal evidence such as a marked increase in the number of young fish, or fingerlings, also suggested an im- provement. The most recent test results from the North End Lake – taken since the bioreme- diation of the water body began last Novem- ber – reveal that inorganic materials such as dissolved metals and minerals now meet the national SANS 241 specifications for drinking water. Algae and bacterial levels have also dropped significantly, although still remain above the acceptable standards for recreational use set by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). Further good news is that pollutant sludge levels on the floor of the North End Lake have decreased by up to 20cm, from depths of around 80cm, since the first phase of the project commenced. The second phase of the project, which started on January 6, will continue until the end of June when another update will be provided. “Based on the data we have, we are on the right track,” said Bam. “Algae levels have improved substantially, while bacterial forms such as E. coli, faecal coliforms and Enterococci have also improved, but are not yet where we would like them to be.” DWAF guidelines state that E. coli and faecal coliform colonies should be fewer than 130 per 100ml, while toxic blue-green algae levels should be less than six blue- green units per millilitre. “Some members of the public have also commented on improved water clarity, but this will change as the sludge continues to lift. We’re looking at ways to expedite the process and have the North End Lake reme- diated in the coming months.” The bioremediation process has involved dosing the lake with an imported proprie- tary product containing natural bacteria and co-enzymes to effectively lift and digest sludge from the bottom of the lake and re- mediate the water. The bioremediation of North End Lake is yielding positive results, with the water body set to be“swimmerready” during the course of this year, results show. The lake is being dosed withspecial bacterial solution to rid it of pollution. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

“Our dosing regime currently involvesspraying 3 400 litres of product into the lakeon a weekly basis,” said Bam.

Gabions built by consulting engineersAfricoast at various water entry points havealso helped to contain the inflow of solidwaste such as plastic bags. This two-partprocess was envisaged to work together to en-able the holistic remediation of the water

body. The clean-up has been rolling out under the

watchful eye of the stadium operator. Ac-cording to its chief executive Chantal du Pi-sani, the progress was the result of the goodwork carried out between the partners.

“The vision has always been to establish aworld-class water sports location, adjacent tothe world class sport fields that we have inthe Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. This willprovide a unique setting for all kinds of sport-

ing and leisure activities. But the key to thisis a safe, clean and well-maintained NorthEnd Lake.

“The rejuvenation of the North End Lakeprecinct is critical for this process, with thehope that the lake will be ready for full openwater contact toward the end of the year,”said Du Pisani. “We’ve had phenomenal sup-port for this process from all our partners, and we are extremely pleased with these in-terim results.”

THE first everDepartment ofEnviron-mentalAffairs andTourismregistereddrop-off site in Kragga Kamma, whichhas been open to the public since thebeginning of April, was officiallylaunched on Friday, April 22.

The municipality officially openedtherevampeddrop-off site, constructednext to the Kragga Kamma Road foreasyaccess of users, followingmassivework thathascost the institutionmorethan R4.2 million. The site, which was previously

closed for more than three years, nowclaims the title of the first registereddrop-off site since it complies with re-cently approved legislation.Municipal spokesperson, Mthuban-

zi Mniki, who was present at thelaunch, said the plan is to have moredrop-off sites in Nelson Mandela Bay.He added that there are currently 18

further existing drop-off sites in theBay that still need to be registered.

Public Health Mayoral Committeechairperson councillor, JoySeale, saidthe reason the site was previouslyclosed was due to adhering to thenorms and standards.“We had to adhere to the norms and

standards.A lot ofworkhad to be doneonthesiteandin thebackground, suchas administration, which is why therewas a delay,” Seale said.

Themainpurposeofthesiteistopro-vide a drop-off facility as a service tosurrounding residents which will al-lowthedisposalof certaincategoriesofhousehold waste that is not removedby the normal kerbside collection ser-vice.

Anotherreasonistoformanintegralcomponent in theNelsonMandelaBayMunicipality’s (NMBM) strategy toeliminate illegal dumping in theNMBM Area.

The site is also to encourage waste

separationandtoprovideaccessible fa-cilities for the drop-off of such separat-ed / recyclable material.“Weare facedwitha lotofchallenges

when it comes to illegaldumping, espe-cially the illegal dumping in entiremetro,” Seale said.Businesseswill notbeallowed todis-

pose of anywastematerial at the drop-off site, except for Garden Services en-terprises which will be allowed to dis-pose of one ton load of waste per dayonly. Entrepreneurs removing wastefrom business premises will not be al-lowed to dispose of such waste at thedrop-off site.Waste that is not acceptedwill be re-

INSPIRATIONAL two-time cancer survivor,Lizelle Knott, who is one of the SchwarzkopfProfessional Mrs South Africa semi-final-ists, was recently in the Bay to address wom-en at a business breakfast ahead of MrsSouth Africa CANSA Gala dinner in Johan-nesburg on April 29.

Port Elizabeth born Lizelle (36) resides inEast London with her three-year-old son,Grayson and husband Warren Knott. At theage of 16, she was diagnosed with Stage IVLymphoma and in 2014, she was diagnosedwith breast cancer.Lizelle has beaten cancer twice and is pas-

sionate about encouraging others throughspeaking out about her ordeal and her heal-ing journey.Through sharing her story, she also wants

to continue to create breast cancer aware-ness and emphasised the importance of hav-ing both mammogram and breast sonar ifyou have any concerns about your diagnos-tic test.Due to the treatment she received during

her battle with cancer as a teenager, she en-dured total hair-loss. However, during hersecond battle with cancer, Lizelle was deter-mined to hang onto her hair. She explainedit was not about vanity, it was about privacyand the right of a cancer patient to decidewho knows about it.“The first few hours of chemotherapy

treatment is a critical time toprotect thehairroots so that hair does not fall out. I didn’twant my little boy to be frightened by seeingmy hair fall out or to be scared by my ill-ness,” she said.Lizelle was one of the first patients to par-

ticipate in Cold Cap therapy to limit the lossof her hair. The website www.coldcap.comexplains the process where the caps are fro-zen to minus 30 degrees and applied to thescalp. The blood vessels which would other-wise carry the drug agents harmful to hairfollicles become constricted. It is well toler-ated by most people but can be uncomforta-blewhich iswhyLizelle used two electric hotwater bottles and cut-up panty liners to pro-tect her ears and forehead.Shementioned that she is extremely grate-

ful for the support her surgeons gave her,and thanked Dr LindaWhitelock Jones fromBayBreastCareCentre, andPlastic surgeon,

DrChrisVanderWaltwhowas instrumentalduring her journey and would always replyto emails after 12 at night with any concernsthat she had.Lizelle’s involvement in the Schwarzkopf

Professional Mrs South Africa pageant isdue to CANSA being the sole beneficiary. The cause is close to her heart and being partof it will enable her to raise much neededawareness and funds.“I’mabsolutely excited about being a semi-

finalist and also having the chance to raiseawareness, sharemy story and inspire morepeople.“I want to encourage women who have

been diagnosed with cancer to realise thatregardless of the scars, or the hair loss, orhow sick they may feel, they are still beauti-ful. They’re still a woman, a wife, a motherand they can do anything they put theirminds to,” Lizelle said.Lizelle believes that attitude is the differ-

ence between an ordeal and an adventure. She advised women who are facing a battlewith cancer to set goals for themselveswhichwill give them something special to plan andlook forward to.“Set yourself a goal, something that you

can look forward to. For me, it was planningmy son’s two-year birthday party. I lookedforward to his birthday and I would go onPinterest to find party ideas formy son,” shesaid.Director of Rushmere Noach Incorporat-

ed, Liane Koorsse, who assisted with orga-nising the breakfast, said Lizelle’s story is agift of inspiration that speaks of hope, deter-mination, fearlessness, love and life.“We at Rushmere have been affected by

cancer in some way or another and so it isa cause very close to our hearts. We wantedto share her incredible story with women inour community and are excited to be part ofthis Women Empowerment programme thatis Mrs South Africa as Lizelle’s silver spon-sor and we look forward to this journey withher.”As a PE based law firm, Rushmere Noach

Attorneys encourage a strong social respon-sibility ethic and support many charitiesacross theBay.Cancer survivor, boardmem-ber and representative for the Igazi Founda-tion, Zodwa Dube, also attended the break-fast.The Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs SA fi-

nal crowning will take place end of October.

RENOVATIONS can boost property values andensure sellers achieve the most competitivepricewhenthetimecomestomaximisethecap-ital investment.

“Home renovation is important to maintainyour house, accommodate your changingneeds and maximise its value if you’re plan-ning to sell and make it more attractive,” saysChris Tyson, CEO of Tyson Properties.

However, while renovations can give home-owners an edge, it is essential to ensure thatprojects undertaken with the specific view forresale have the desired effect.

“If adding value is the end goal, it is necessa-ry to appoint professionals qualified to com-plete the work to the highest standards and rec-ognise that there are some renovations thatwill specifically boost value. Renovations tokitchens and bathrooms remain the key areasto upgrade,” says Tyson.

“Although these rooms are probably themost costly to refurbish or renovate, they arethe ones that can add the highest value whenyour home goes on to the market. It is very im-portant to also take into consideration some ofthe latest trends in renovations.”

Tyson shares four prevalent home renova-tion trends:

Openplan livingOpen-plan living is one of the latest home

trends, says Tyson. Creating open living spaceswould involve removing walls to open up space

and create flow between rooms, particularlythe kitchen and the entertainment areas. Itmakes smaller homes appear bigger and cre-ates a more social atmosphere.

Going green“Another important change to make to your

home is to make it energy efficient - this comesin a bid to reduce energy waste in light of risingelectricity costs and includes home automationsystems, water-restricting showerheads, solarpanels and LED light installations,” says Ty-son.

Luxury bathroomsAfocusoncreatingluxuriousbathroomsand

to include underfloor heating, a standalonebathtub and a shower featuring multiple wateroptions are a few of the trends taking the lead.

“Renovating bathrooms is one of the quick-est and most effective ways to add value to yourhome or investment property. Lighting, colourand ventilation are the most important factorsto implement,” says Tyson.

Smart homes“Smart technology is also important to con-

sider. Homeowners are increasingly incorpo-ratingsmart technologyinto theirrenovations, for example including charging stations in ex-isting cupboards so the gadgets and wires wereout of sight, or installing electrical outlets withbuilt-in USB charging ports,” says Tyson.

A SPECIAL PRAYEROF SUCCESS

Before I met thispowerful

spiritual LADY AMELIAhappiness was rare

in my family. My life wasfilled with cheating, sick kids and bad luck.

I tried many healers and remedies but allfailed. I saw a testimony on local TV aboutand old couple, had united.I paid R200 consultation. She accuratelyread my fortune and told me my problemsand showed me my enemies in water.

She cleansed me, united me with myhusband, gave me a special ring for luckand love crystals. Today I have a big

business and my son enjoys a promotion. Thanks LADY AMELIA for fixing mymarriage, luck, protecting me from myenemies, health and solving sexual

problems. She saved my son from drugsand alcohol.

WHENyou thinkofmotorsport, Russia isn’t thefirst place that comes tomind. In fact, it’s proba-bly not even in your top five. However, this weekend the Formula 1 pad-

dock puts Russia front and centre as it heads tothe Sochi Autodrom for the fourth round of the2016 season. The Sochi circuit hosted its first Grand Prix

race in2014and is the first purpose-builtFormu-la 1 site in Russia. The 5.8 kilometre track wasbuilt under thewatchful eye of F1’s favoured de-signer, Herman Tilke, and has a capacity of55 000. Themost striking feature of the circuit isits integration to the Olympic Park that hostedthe 2014 Winter Olympics. The circuit, second in length only to Spa and

Silverstone, requires compromise in terms ofcar setup. The start and end of the lap demandgood traction and braking performance whilethe middle sector requires a more technical ap-proach to master the flow of the corners.“It’s a very modern track with a few corners

that look quite similar by they are never as easyas they might look, because you have to try todrive the car in the limit each time you turn,”says Russian driver Daniil Kvyat. In the two races it’s put on the Sochi Autod-

rom, ithas shown little tyrewear. So little in factthat in 2014 Nico Rosberg was able to completea stint of 52 lapsonone set of tyres. But the intro-duction of a third compound choice in 2016means thatwe’reunlikely to seearepeatofwhathappened here two years ago.The Red Bull and Haas F1 Team have opted

for an aggressive tyre strategy by selecting tensets of supersofts, two sets of softs, and one setof the medium compound tyre. It’s an expectedchoice for these two teams who have been abletomake the supersoft tyre last longer than their

closest rivals. The Red Bull drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and

Daniil Kvyat, may not have a straight forwardshot at the podium but will be ready to pounceshouldeitherof theMercorFerraridrivershavean issue on Sunday. There is a marked difference between Mer-

cedes and Ferrari’s tyre choices too. While allfourdrivershaveonlyonesetofmediumsontheshelf,HamiltonandRosberghaveoptedforeightsets of supersofts, and four sets of the yellow-walled soft tyres. In contrast, Raikkonen andVettel have chosen six sets each of the soft andsupersoft compound. The thinking behind Ferrari’s tyre choice

could be to do one less stop thanMercedes in therace by running the more durable soft tyre fora longer stint. As the supersoft is generally thequicker tyre to runonmuchwill dependonhowbigatimedeficit thereisbetweenitandthemoredurable soft tyre. The run down to the first corner is a long one,

which dramatically tightens into turn one. Fer-rari will be extra vigilant after Sebastian Vettelgot into the side of KimiRaikkonen inChina. Ineveryroundso farFerrarihas facedsome issueswhether through their own making or uncon-trollable reliability problems. If the Italian teamis to mount a serious challenge for the top stepof the podium, which it seems likely they can,the first order of business is tohavea clean race.Thelast timewevisitedRussiaMercedeswere

on the brink on clinching a constructor’s titleand Lewis Hamilton had been outperformingteammate Nico Rosberg by a considerable mar-gin. In2016, thestorysofarreadsmuchdifferent-ly. Now it’s up to Lewis Hamilton to showwhatbeing a three-time world champion reallymeans.

TALKINGF1:NATALIE LE CLUE

F1PreviewRussianShowdown REMEMBER the song, “April Showers”?

Five of themwere transferred to the rugbyfield last weekend in the form of penaltiesfrom the same young man, Garth April, who you might aptly say was honouringthe month of his birth. There was much more, however, than

that coincidence to a see-sawing SuperRugby match that the Sharks, hanging onfor dear life, just managed to pull out ofthe bag against Dunedin’s Highlanders 15-14, yes, just a single solitary point! In the background the 80-minute drama

was filled with all sorts of other incidents. As early as the 12th minute scrumhalf Ko-bus Reinach was stretchered off with a se-rious knee injury and subsequently flownhome – this a portent of still worse tocome.Next up in this sporting drama was a

dangerous mid-air collision tackle byHighlanders centre, Jason Emery, onSharks’ fullback, Willie le Roux. No doubtit was not intentional, but a slow-motionreplay from theTMO’s box clearly showedthat, though unintentional, Emery wasguilty of an over-eager midair clash as thetwo players met in mid-air collision thatsaw the Sharks’ fullback upendedwith thefrightening consequence of landing on thepoint where the back of Le Roux’s headand neck meet.Miraculously, after being led off the

field looking extremely shaky he was ableto return and play all but the final tenmin-utes of the match. The incident could not have been inten-

tional on the New Zealander’s part. Butreferee, BenO’Keefe, had no option –moreor less at the TMO’s insistence – to red-card the Highlanders centre. Nor did the

drama end there. As late as the 79th min-ute Highlanders’ flyhalf, Lima Sopoaga, was just wide with a drop-goal attemptthat missed by little more than a hand’sbreadth.A weekend that had started in this dra-

matic fashion continued with the bestmatch that saw Stormers at Newlandstake control in the second half against theReds eventually to win handsomely 40-22in by far the best match of the weekend.Stormers took a while to settle down butin a second half that scored full markswith Nick Mallett in the commentators’box, the former Springbok coach gave thehome side a bouquet for the manner inwhich they turned up the heat with somefine rugby in both attack and defence. “Agreat game!”Finally with the Ireland short tour not

that far off, flyhalf Elton Jantjieswas backto his best in guiding the Lions to a 45-10walkover against PE’s Southern Kings, who, try as they might, are – at this mo-ment anyway – out of their depth in SuperRugby. In this sort of form Jantjies mustsurely rank head and shoulders above anyother contender for the Springboks flyhalfberth.Indeed, such is the understanding be-

tween this nippy backline director andpint-sized Faf de Klerk that a halfbackpairing between these two with the Boksmightwell be on the cards.Really, whynot? Remember Gentles and Ulyate? WatchLions wing Ruan Combrink as well; he’sright up there with them.A weekend of ups and downs, of unpre-

dictability? No argument about that. Itwas what makes rugby the great game itis!
