Dit is (amper) heerlike lente . . .

    algehele gedaanteverwisseling

    ondergaan.

    Dt is verlede Donderdag

    bekend gemaak toe Transnet se

    nasionale hawe-owerheid sy

planne vir die Baai met inwoners

    in Humewood gedeel het.

    Rajesh Dana, hawebestuurder

van Port Elizabeth, het die ver-

loop van die planne van sowat

    R9 miljard uiteengesit.

Die eerste prioriteit is om die

    brandstof- en gastenks, en die

    mangaanerts, (in die Port Eliza-

    beth-hawe) te skuif (na die

    Ngqura-hawe). Dit sal teen 2017

    voltooi wees, waarna nuwe ont-

    wikkelings op daardie grond teen

2019 kan begin, het Dana ges.

In die twee jaar tussen di da-

    tums sal die grond gerehabiliteer

word sodat enige skade en be-

    soedeling weens die stowwe wat

tans daar is, herstel kan word.

Daarna sal n gedeelte van die

hawe in n waterfront vir die pub-

    liek omskep word. Meer ruimte

    sal vir vissersbote geskepworden

    die moontlikheid om groot passa-

sierskepe in die hawe toe te laat,

    word ook oorweeg.

Ons beoog ook om Port Eliza-

    beth die grootste motoruitvoer-

    der indie land temaak.Buitendie

    vervaardigers wat reeds hier is,

    het ander maatskappye in die

    land, asook in Afrika, belangstel-

    ling inPort Elizabeth getoon, het

Dana ges en dit as n massiewe

    toename in inkomste bestempel.

    Die verskuiwing van die brand-

    stoftenks en mangaanerts na die

    Ngqura-hawe beloof ook groot

    ekonomiese voordele.

    Groot planne aangekondig

    vir ontwikkeling van hawe

    SEDERT vyf addisionele eksami-

nators aangestel is, is die wagtyd-

perk vir afsprake vir rybewyse en

    leerlingrybewyse in die Nelson

    Mandelabaai-metro korter.

    Maar die wagtydperk is steeds

te lank, het Hamilton Totoyi, di-

    rekteur van verkeer- en lisensie-

dienste, verlede week op n verga-

    dering van die staandekomitee

    vir veiligheid en sekuriteit ges.

    Volgens hom is die wagtydperk

    vir n leerlingrybewys nou vier

dae in Port Elizabeth en drie dae

    in Uitenhage. Daarteenoor is die

    wagtydperk vir n rybewys in

Port Elizabeth sowat agt weke en

    in Uitenhage sewe weke.

    Die grootste rede hoekom dit

steeds so lank is, is die perso-

    neeltekort, het Totoyi ges.

    Daarword nou n ondersoek ge-

    doen om op n wetenskaplike

wyse vas te stel hoeveel personeel

nodig sal wees om dit te oorkom.

    Hopelik sal die ondersoek

    binne n maand afgehandel kan

    word, het hy vertel.

    . Volgens statistieke wat op

    die vergadering voorgel is, was

daar in Junie 2 280 aansoeke om

    leerlingrybewyse, waarvan 1 477

suksesvol was en met 142 mense

wat nie vir hul afsprake opgedaag

    het nie.

Daar was ook 980 aansoeke om

    rybewyse, met 205 wat suksesvol

was en 147 mense wat nie

    opgedaag het nie.

    Wagtyd vir rybewyse nou korter

    now expanding into Africa.

Theres absolutely no doubt that Af-

rica is the place to be in the next 50

    years, saidMillbugs Managing Direc-

    biggestm-commerce(mobilecommerce)

retailer in the world, said Sibanda.

The company, which prides itself on

providing elegant and edgy fashion for

millennials, was started by friends and

    business partners Sabelo Sibanda and

Thulisile Volwana in April this year.

Sibanda is an Old Grey Boy and Vol-

    wana is fromNgcoboandwent toNyan-

ga High School. According to Sibanda,

    millennialsarenot just ademograph-

ic i.e. people born in the late 70s to the

early 2000s but more a way of thinking.

    Millennials embrace self expres-

    sion, radical creativity and connectivi-

    connectivity, said Sibanda.

Terms such as Corporate Social In-

vestment (CSI) are not just the right

thing to do but are an expected stand-

ard for this generation. We have built

a solid community around our motto,

Only The Unique Belong, a rallying

cry for individualism and freedom of

    expression, said Sibanda.

    They currently get their products

from the East but are in talks with de-

signers all over the continent in order

    to stock their items.

We get customers from all over the

    thing thatwewouldnotwearourselves,

we dont stock it. We strongly believe

that this honesty allows us to connect

    more effectively with our customers,

    said Sibanda.

    According to Sibanda, people make

use of their site because it is secure,

they have live chat support, a transpar-

    multiple payment gateways.

And most importantly, we offer the

    Organ DonorMonth

    Organ DonorMonth

    BETTIE GILIOMEE

THERE are over 4 300 people

    throughout SouthAfrica currently

    awaiting an organ transplant oper-

    ation. Less than 600 transplants

    are performed each year andmany

adults and children die waiting for

    a life-saving transplant.

    With August being Organ Donor

    Month the Organ Donor Foundation

(ODF) is through their Save seven

    lives drive encouraging members of

the public to become organ donors.

One person can save seven lives when

they become an organ donor this in-

cludes the use of 1 heart, 2 lungs, 2 kid-

neys, 1 liver and 1 pancreas.

Two Port Elizabeth men who are

hoping to qualify for a kidney trans-

plant and find organ donors are

Arthur van Hall (58) and Patrick

    Chrisjan (49).

They will be travelling to Cape

Town on 2 September to be assessed

by doctors and a psychologist before

they can be put on the list.

These two have been friends for

over a year after meeting during their

    nightly dialysis sessions.Both receive

dialysis for 8 hours a night, three

times a week at the National Renal

    Care unit in Greenacres.

Its difficult leaving your wife and

children at home three nights a week

while you have to go for dialysis. I go

there at 6pm and only return home at

    3am.Wecannot leave town for longpe-

riods, so it does affect your family

life, said Patrick, who is married to

Nokuzala and a father of four.

He suffered failure of his left kidney

in 2004 and was treated for that, but

last year his other kidney also failed.

Afterwards it was discovered that hy-

pertension led to his kidney failure.

    Despite his nightly dialysis ses-

sions, he still has to work during the

day in his job as a supervisor for the

    Department of Transport.

Arthur, who owned his own courier

company, had to sell his business as

he couldnt continue to work. He has

    diabetes andbothhis kidneys failed in

2006. He was hoping to be put on the

list for a kidney donation last year,

but this had to be postponed when it

was found that he needed to undergo

heart-bypass surgery. He has now re-

covered to such an extent that he can

be re-assessed for a kidney transplant.

I will always have diabetes, but re-

ceiving a kidney will change my life

    and giveme andmywife, Nancy, qual-

ity of life again, said Arthur.

My wife is my biggest supporter.

She is the sole breadwinner now and

has to be a nurse for me at night too.

    She understands my emotions, my

moods and my illness, said Arthur.

Both Patrick and Arthur agree that

a lackof education is oneof thebiggest

    reasons people dont becomeorgando-

nors. And people are scared of dying

and dont want to think about it, said

    Patrick.

It costs nothing to register as an

organ donor and is simple proce-

    dure. Visit the website

    www.odf.org.za or call Toll Free:

    0800 22 66 11 to register. You

    will receive an information pack

in the post with an educational

leaflet, an organ donor card and

stickers for your ID and Drivers

    Licence. Most importantly, they

ask that you discuss the decision

to be an organ donor with your

family, as theywould need to give

consent at the time of death.

IT is time for grandparents, parents

and children to sit back, relax and

    enjoy that timeless Roald Dahl

    classic, Charlie and the Choco-

    late Factory.

    The Rother/SwainDrama Stu-

dio will present this firm favour-

ite in the PE Opera House Sep-

    tember 8 to 15.

    After record auditions, it

    was decided that with so

    much talent available, three

    casts would alternate in the

    lead roles.

    The Studio is delighted to

    have thespian stalwart,

    Reyn ffoulkes on board,

    playing the coveted role of

    Mr Willy Wonka. Working

    with some 130 children

    and teenagers, ffoulkes,

    choreographer, Jerry For-

    tuin, andmusical director,

    BronwynMaree, have had

    their timecut out for them.

    Rother and Swain com-

    bined their studios over 20

    years ago and have staged

    an annual childrens pro-

    duction ever since.

    Charlie and the Choco-

    late Factory promises to

    be a colourful romp

    through the delightful

world of Willy Wonka - where Chocolate Riv-

    ers, everlastinggobstoppersandOompa-Loom-

pas are par for the course. With the youngest

cast member being a pre-schooler, the cute

factor will definitely abound. Each and every

one of the 130 will be given his/her individual

moment in the spotlight, with many treading

the boards for the first time. They will be very

capably led by the older andaward-winning ac-

tors of the group - Amy Annear, Candice Mil-

lar, Taryn Benade and Caitlin Wiggill.

In the lead role of Charlie Bucket, Celso Fab-

bri, son of acclaimed funny man, Gino Fabbri,

proves himself to be a chip of the old block.

Charlie Bucket will also be played by Janelle

Moore and Kyrah Lloyd, while the endearing

    character ofGrandpaJoewill beplayedbyTim

Collier, Sarah Rose and James van derMerwe.

As part of their outreach programme,

groups of children from the indigent areas of

    Helenvale,Missionvale andWalmer Township

will also be brought to the show, and castmem-

bers have all been involved in creating a spe-

cial sweetie-pack for each child, so that they,

too, can enjoy the delicious wonderland ofWil-

    ly Wonka.

    Bookings through Computicket are now

open, with full cast lists being available at the

booking office. There will be nine performanc-

    es in total.

Main actors in the Charlie and the Choclate Factory are, at the back,

Brad Emslie (Mike Teevee) and Reyn ffoulkes (Willy Wonka). In the mid

dle are Amy Annear (Veruca Salt), Caitlin Wiggill (Augusta Gloop) and

Candice Millar (Violet Bureaugarde). In front is Celso Fabbri (Charlie

    Bucket). Photo: SUPPLIED

Port Elizabeth Express: Woensdag, 29 Augustus 2012

    ZELDR SWANEPOEL

THE sudden passing of his brother nine

months ago is still fresh in his memory,

and he is also the inspiration for rap artist

Shaidos fresh approach on his music.

    His brother, CurtisKoopman (akaCK),with

whom he shared a love for rap, was murdered

last year, and instead of giving up on rapping

whilst mourning, Shaido has decided to hon-

our his brothers legacy by taking his skill

    to another level.

Shaido, whose real name is Sher-

win Koopman, has been invited to

represent Port Elizabeth in the MCs

Freestyle Battle in the annual Afri-

    canHip-Hop Indaba in Cape Town.He

will be at Zulu Bar on Friday and the

Good Hope Centre on Saturday, Sep-

    tember 1.

Im grateful for this opportunity to

represent my city in this competition

because rap music has always been a

part of my life since I was a little child.

Losing my brother and fellow rap artist

is part of my inspiration to engage in free-

style battle rap for its a different form of

    rap music.

It allows theartist to exposehis emo-

tions freely to be victorious over his

opponent in the art of freestyle battle

which is a skill that only a few rap-

    pers can master.

His brothers death left a huge

void, and he says he stays in-

    spired by his brothers motto

which was to go places. He

is therefore also using this op-

    portunity to rub shoulders

    with some influential people

in the music industry to hope-

    fully further his musical career.

I knowmy brother is probably proud ofme

for taking this courageous step by taking part

in this battle rap. The very best artists from

all over South Africa will be there and at the

end of the day there can only be one and Im

hoping to be that one to make my people and

    my brother proud.
