AFTER 5 years of planning, promoting andpromising theRichmondHill SpecialRatesAr-ea (SRA) has finally received a still to be dis-closed sum of money from its partner, the Nel-son Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM).TheBoardof theSection 21 companyare still

in denial about their responsibilities until “ev-erything kicks in”, fact is that money is beingspent likethere’snotomorrow.Evenworse,no-oneexceptachosen fewareprivy to theexpens-es that are incurred at the moment.SRA money is even spent on operational

costs of the still to be dissolved Richmond HillResidents Association (RHRA). Due to the factthat both SRA and RHRA are operated by de-fault by the same individuals, SRAmoneywillmerely be allocated to the “changeover” period– the lengthof timeat thebehestof thesaid indi-viduals whilst capital spending and operation-al expenses take preference over service deliv-ery.Sounds familiar? Well who can blame you

when the SRA is in partnership with theNMBM as mentor? But, themost serious concern at themoment

is the utter contempt and disrespect Boardmembers of this public companyhave for theirshareholders. It is a disgrace that a Board whoare supposed to be unbiased towardsmembersand shareholders and who should at all timesact in the interest of these shareholders andmembers are allowed to treat individuals withsuch contempt and disrespect.Currently there isacontrolled facebookpage

that is regarded as the interim “official” SRApage until a proper webpage is established. Onthis page the Boardmembers andmanagers ofthispubliccompanyhavedeclaredopenseasonon anybody and anyone who dare to disagreeor render criticism (be it positive or not) to-wards their perceived goals. Most shockingwasarecentprofanityandex-

tremely derogatory comment made by a mem-ber on said page about an SMS comment in the

Herald of 7 April. The Chairman of the Board,in effect the CEO of the public not for profitcompanyhas chosen to “Like” the comment in-stead of taking corrective action. In any public company the Chairmanwould

have been fired for this despicable behaviour, but not in Richmond Hill. The MBDA protectthis first littleFrankensteinwitheverything intheir power whilst the NMBM will not budgehaving finally gained complete financial con-trol over an already questionable rates and taxsystem.Heaven help us.

THE Port of Ngqura has introduced thecountry’s first automated mooring system,to improve port efficiency and safety.

The system comprises 26 mooring units, the last of which arrived at the port inMarch.Transnet National Ports Authority chief

executive, Richard Vallihu, said this pro-curement would cement the deep-waterport’s position as a leading transshipmenthub for the Sub-Saharan region.“Procured from global engineering group,

Cavotec, the mooring units were designed,custom-manufactured and installed to meetthe specific environmental conditions of thePort of Ngqura. They will complement man-ual berthing teams at the port by stabilisingcontainer vessels on the quayside at the clickof a button, reducing docking and undockingtimes from between 10 and 40minutes to lessthan 10 seconds,” said Vallihu. He said hewas excited about the port being

the leader of the pack in the African mari-time industry by acquiring this technology.Port manager, Mpumi Dweba, said Ngqu-

ra experienced significant long-wave effectsand strong winds, particularly in the wintermonths, which frequently caused berthedvessels to move excessively and this affectedcargo operations, safety and the port’s effi-ciency.

“This unique vacuum-based automatedmooring technology is used in a few ports in-ternationally, but will be the first in theSouth African port system, proving onceagain that the Port of Ngqura is the leaderin deploying new technologies to improveport operations and the safety of vessels,”she said.Technicians from Cavotec have been on

site since November assembling and testingunits at Berth D100, one of four berths at theNgqura container terminal that will beequipped with the technology. Dweba saidthe pilot berth had been selected because itwas most severely affected by the weather.“We certainly look forward to fewer inter-

ruptions in the loading and unloading ofships, which we know will yield significantimprovements in our operational efficiencyand our ability to better serve clients.”Dweba said local skills transfer was a cen-

tral requirement of the contract and Cavotecwould upskill local mechanical and electri-cal companies to provide ongoing technicalsupport, maintenance and repairs to theport. In addition, Ngqura maintenance staffhad received specialised training, andopera-tional training would take place after theunits had all been installed. Installation andtesting of the 26 units is under way and duefor completion at the end of August. There-after, the system could be rolled out to threeadditional berths at the Ngqura containerterminal.

THE Baywest Mall’s architects say they havemade sure that when the long-awaited centreopens on May 21, it will be one of the country’smost enjoyable shopping and futuristic cen-tres.

Port Elizabeth’s newest and largest enter-tainment and retail centre, which span’s thesize of 22 rugby fields, is said to have quick-ac-cess crisscross corridors linking shoppers toboth sides of the oval-shaped mall, one of thecountry’s largest screens in the food court at24m², and restaurants with table heights to ac-commodate shoppers in wheelchairs, all partand parcel of what the architects say will bea shopping experience redefined.

An abundance of natural light and ground-breaking green building techniques are alsopart and parcel of the centre’s features.

The chairman of the firm which designedthe mall, dhk architects, Derick Henstra, ex-plained the psychology behind building amallwhichwould excite andentertain, ratherthan confuse and disorientate. The firm’s as-

sociate director, Joe Struwig, was lead designarchitect on the Baywest Mall project.

“We have a fresher, newer approach to re-tail, and theBaywestMall is oneof those exer-cises,” said Henstra. “It’s a futuristic mall.We wanted it to be a timeless piece of archi-tecture.

“We had to make Baywest visually appeal-ing. For malls around the world, one of themost important aspects is the element of flow. They are often not very legible or user-friend-ly, so we wanted to create a mall which wasan absolute pleasure to navigate.”

The uncomplicated design of the mall, saidHenstra, achieved two objectives: it ensuredthemall detracted from its natural surroundsas little as possible, and kept shoppers’ atten-tion on the reason they were there in the firstplace – the stores.

“The mall has a soft curve, so you can virtu-ally see around the corner. It is also a tightrace track, so it doesn’t feel like you are walk-ing for kilometres and kilometres. There is al-so a crisscross, so you can cross over from theone side of the mall to the other very easily.”

Green building principles were also en-

gaged wherever possible in the design, hesaid. Something relatively new to large mallsin South Africa is prismatic diffusers – smallopenings in the roof which transmit largeamounts of natural light into the centre with-

out transferring the heat gain, meaning theair conditioning system is not strained.

Another energy-saving technology, LEDlighting, is also used throughout the mall.

“This is all paired with an incredibly intel-ligent air-conditioning system which focuseson keeping the shops cool, with the spill-overcool air used to cool and ventilate the mall,”Henstra said. “It’s a clever way of being ener-gy efficient.”

Being aware of shoppers with special needswasalso an important part of thedesignbrief, and for this reason Baywest Mall had beendesigned with wheelchair access in mind.

“There are lots of easy ramps for wheel-chairs, and the heights of tables in restau-rants and the food court are designed to ac-commodate shoppers inwheelchairs. It’s partof making the mall friendly and easy for ev-eryone to access.”

Speaking of the mall’s inclusion of a FunFactory entertainment zone, Henstra said,“We’re bringing back the enjoyment of retail.Shopping is not just shopping – there is an ele-ment of entertainment. That’s what Baywestbrings together.”

YOU see online adverts everywhere about howto make money by trading the forex markets.Dopeople justget sucked inwithclevermarket-ing, or is trading the forex markets actually agood way of making a decent return on yourmoney?

“Learn how to create yourself an additional in-come” and “Quit your day job” are justsome of themessages forex train-ing companies out there sendto the average person lookingfor ways to increase his orher income on a part-timebasis, and then hopefully, maybe even full-timeeventually.

They certainly soundverypromising, butdopeo-ple actually make moneyfrom this?

Training in forex can be ex-tremely expensive, with weekendcourses selling at between R18 000and R25 000 a pop. For most people, that’s a lotof money.

However, if the company delivers on its prom-ise and you can manage to implement whatyou’ve learned over the weekend, and more im-portantly, start to see some results, then maybeit’s worth it.

The big question however is, can you actuallylearn a new skill, any skill, in just two days?

“To promise people that they’ll start to make

money after just two days of training is, in myopinion, a bit misleading. Trading is a skill thatrequires a lot of practice. I’ve been trading for 11years nowand it tookme close to six years beforeIeventuallystartedtoseesomeconsistentresults.I have also lost everything before, so I’ve been ex-posed to everything the markets can possiblythrow at you,” said Jannie Barwise, owner of FX

Lounge, a forex trading companybased inPort Elizabeth.

“You’ll never learn this skill andstart togetconsistent resultsoverthe course of just two days. Infact, I don’t think you’ll be ableto learn any skill over a two-day period. Okay, maybe howtobakemuffinsor cupcakes, ifyou can call it a skill, butmostdefinitely not how to trade theforex markets profitably.”FX Lounge works with stu-

ing company in South Africa that workswith students until they get consistent results.“When you work with someone over a period oftime, there is no place to hide. If you don’t knowwhat you’re doing, it will show. “

SCHOOLS in Nelson Mandela Bay will soonbe exposed to the fun and excitement of sci-ence and technology when the Nelson Man-dela Metropolitan University School of ICTintroduces the First Lego League.

The league was created through a partner-ship between the US-based organisationFIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition ofScience and Technology), led by Segway in-ventor Dean Kamen and the Lego Group.

The organisers say Lego helps with build-ing self-confidence, knowledge and valuablecareer and life skills.

The league challenges children betweenthe ages of nine and 16 to think like scien-tists and engineers. Alongside adult coach-es, teams solve problems using research, en-gineering concepts, presentation tech-niques and robots.

The University’s School of ICT plans tovisit 20 schools to create awareness of FirstLego League and get interested children toform teams.

Natasha Saunders of Eagles Home School, the regional champions for 2013 and 2014,

says, “It is as though someone has taught mea skill as vital as breathing. I have seen thelife value for myself, the children and the fu-ture of the country.”

The teams – from two to a maximum of10 members – learn valuable skills while re-searching challenges facing today’s scien-tists.

In this year’s FLL Trash Trek, challengepupils will explore the world of trash – fromcollection, to sorting, to smart productionand reuse. The project requires pupils to en-gage with their community and find solu-tions to the refuse problems they face.

In addition to the research project, teamswill design, build, and programme autono-mous robots using Lego Mindstorms tech-nology to complete missions on a thematicplaying field.

The tournament takes place at the NMMUIndoor Sport Centre on October 24.Throughout the year, the NMMU School ofICT will also provide free training work-shops for the teams at NMMU North Cam-pus. – REPORTER

SOUTH Africa has an extremely high inci-dence of burn injuries, with an estimated3,2% of the population suffering from a ther-mal injury annually. These accidents most commonly occur in

densely populated, informal settlementswhereparaffinis themostusedsourceof fuel,andcookingoftentakesplaceonfiresandpri-mus stoves on the floor. These informal dwellings often consist of

just one room, making it incredibly difficultto plan safe kitchen and sleeping areas.Children are particularly vulnerable to

burn accidents, and it is one of the leadingcauses of death and injury to young childrenin South Africa. The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s

Hospital in Cape Town is the only paediatrichospital in Sub-Sahara Africa with a traumaunit and a burns unit dedicated exclusivelyto childrenunder 12 years old. The SpecialistC2BurnsUnit treatsmorethan3 500childrenwith serious burns every year. Some 85% ofthepatientsareyoungerthansixand98%arefrom disadvantaged communities. The main causes of burn injuries seen at

the RedCross BurnsUnit are hotwater fromtipping containers above the child’s head orat ground level, and from unattended fires.Whentheskin isexposed toexcessiveheat,

This latest technology of direct self-consumption andstorage of solar power is the most efficient way to makeuse of solar power even at night or during load shedding.

Net MeteringNet metering allows residential and commercial

customers who generate their own electricity from solarpower to feed the surplus solar power back into the grid.

How does Net Metering work?Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar

energy system owners for the electricity they add to thegrid. For example, if a residential customer has a solarsystem on the home’s rooftop, it may generate moreelectricity than the home uses during daylight hours. Ifthe home is net-metered, the electricity meter will runbackwards to provide a credit against what is consumed.

How long will the solar systems last andhow do I know I have a quality product?

Rubicon is a market leader for solar componentsupply in South Africa. All products sourced for solarkits are premium quality from both European and localmanufacturers. The solar system is designed to lastfor more than 25years. If premium products are usedthe installation will last. All our balance of systemcomponents are quality European manufactured. Yoursolar panels will produce 80% of the rated power 20years after installation. So if a system of 5kW is installedin 2015, the same system is guaranteed to produce 4kW20 years later!

IMEON ENERGY’s high quality Smart Grid invertersguarantee safe and simple installations with reliablelong-term performance. Connection to solar panels,

YOUR ELECTRICITY PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN SOLVED!

INVEST IN HYBRID SOLAR ENERGY

• No more load shedding stress.• No more electricity bills• Better investment than putting money

in the bank!• Latest technology from Europe• High quality, excellent value!• Constant electricity, constant safety

IMEON 3.6SMART GRID & ENERGYSOURCES MANAGEMENT

Smart Hybrid Solar SystemNo more load shedding at home or the office!

the electrical grid and battery storage is performedthrough safe “Plug-and-Play” connectors, thus avoidingany electrical contact and simplifying the installationprocess. The IMEONSmart Grid Inverter is certified andconforms to the European (IEC) and international norms(VDE), as well as the local South African standard NRS097-2-1 certified by TÜV Rheinland ensuring maximallevel of performance, reliability and safety. IMEONENERGY’s Smart Grid Inverters are guaranteed for 5years, with an option to extend to 10 years.

It seems expensive, how do I finance?Solar is more affordable now than ever before!

NERSA has approved tariff increases for electricity of13% this year with more increase to come. Once a solarsystem is installed the price is frozen as the rate paidfor the electricity equals the rate charged! So futureprice increases from Eskom will not affect you. Themost cost effective finance solution is to attach the costto a current mortgage on the residence. This increasesthe value of the property as a result. Typical payback is5-6 years. Please contact us for installers near you for adetailed explanation of the cost savings and how easythe process is.

Which is the best systems for me?The hybrid smart solar system offers the best

combinations of solar technology for the SouthAfrican market. The biggest problem with Grid-Tiedsolar systems is that during load shedding the systemshuts down. A complete Off-Grid solution is not gridinteractive, and is too expensive for the majority ofhousehold’s, and it necessitate large battery banks,to take an entire household at larfe expense off thegrid. The best solution is hybrid solar as it solves allthese problems. The IMEON 3.6 hybrid inverter is acombination of the best of these technologies in oneplug and play solution.

The IMEON Smart Grid Inverter provides the perfectsolution to the intermittency and fluctuation of solarenergy by managing multiple sources of a solar system(PV, Batteries and Grid). The IMEON Smart GridInverter increases the overall efficiency of photovoltaicsystems through the use of smart storage managementsystems. With an IMEON Smart Grid Inverter and theincreasing affordability of photovoltaic modules, thecost of solar power is becoming more competitive. TheIMEON Smart Grid Inverter can be integrated withexisting infrastructures by relieving the grid duringlow consumption times, e.g. during the day when thebatteries will be charging, and by supporting the gridduring high consumption times, e.g. during the nightwhen the batteries will be discharging. The IMEONSmart Grid Inverter enables photovoltaic installationsto be economically viable and accessible to all.

Rubicon Renewables have launched an initiativeto make high quality, high efficiency solarsystems available to the public. The systemswill comprise of a kit form solar system whichwill be installed by a qualified solar electrician. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality hasspearheaded grid tie solar in South Africa and as amunicipality have taken the lead nationally in thisarea.

What does Grid-Tie mean?Grid-Tie solar allows a solar system to be installed

on residential roof space and the electricity generatedis fed back into the municipal electrical grid. A bi-directional meter replaces the prepaid or KWh meter. The bi- directional meter records the amount of KWh’sproduced by the solar modules and reverses the amountof KWh’s consumed by the household. If the systemsare sized correctly according to household usage, therewould be no charge for your consumption at month end.Ultimately your electricity costs can be reduced to zero!During the night, the house is not energy independent, and in case of grid-failure or load shedding, grid-tiesystems would not provide the necessary power back-up to keep your home running.

What does Off-Grid mean?Traditional Off-Grid systems are completely

independent from the Eskom grid. This is achieved bycharging battery banks with the totality of generatedsolar power. The battery bank is sized according toyour KWh consumption and solar production potential. This option is typically used in remote areas wherelong runs of cable would make an electrical installationeconomically unviable. A major problem with this typeof system is the inability to be connected to the grid ifneeded. In addition, if cloudy weather persists for afew days, the generated solar power will not be ableto sufficiently charge the batteries for unpredictablehousehold consumption, meaning loss of power.

What is a Hybrid Grid System? The hybrid, Smart Grid, option offers the best of

both Off-Grid and Grid-Tie systems. The hybrid smartinverter uses all three sources of energy simultaneously(solar / batteries / grid) to ensure uninterrupted powersupply.

In such Smart Grid systems, solar panels generatepower for direct consumption to the household withoutthe need to charge batteries first, therefore the directsolar yields are maximized. Batteries are charged onlywith the surplus of solar production to avoid batteryexhaustion, as well as allowing connection to themunicipal grid to feed-in the leftover production, orto consume only the complimentary energy needed inthe house. All this, all at the same time. The currentIMEON ENERGY technology recently introduced toSouth Africa, utilizes an IMEON 3.6 smart inverterwhich always uses the best option available from solarand batteries before soliciting the Eskom grid power.

Less energy producedthan consumed:

No production of solar energy Isolated site, black outsor grid failure:

Solar energy power feeds consumption needsand simultaneously charges the batteries. An eventual surplus of solar power is theninjected to the grid.

Solar power feeds a part of the consumptionneeds. The batteries and the public gridprovide the remaining complimentary power.

The batteries feed the domestic consumptionneeds. When needed, an eventual complimentof electricity is supplied by the public grid.

The solar installation feeds the domesticconsumption needs first and charges batteries. The batteries then provide the eventualcomplimentary power.

• The unit can be grid connected and can feed backinto the grid for net metering.

• Avoids load shedding – the IMEON 3.6 uses the gridas a reference and routes solar power to the residencefor self- consumption and any residual power is usedto charge batteries during daytime. You will not beaffected by loadshedding during the day.

• If load shedding occurs at night, the IMEON 3.6 actsas a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and suppliesthe residence with power via the battery bank whichis sized according to usage.

• Lower installation costs as the system is an all inone solution and its electricity is consumed at nightor other periods where the home’s electricity useexceeds the system’s output. Customers are onlybilled for their “net” energy use.

Energy management during various conditions

SOLAR KITS NOW AVAILABLE!

Optimised Efficiency

With the IMEON Smart Grid Inverter there is no longerthe need for complicated designs and installations. TheIMEON Smart Grid Inverter adjusts itself to optimisethe use of all available energy resources. Compared totraditional Off-Grid systems, the IMEON Smart GridInverter optimises the level of self-consumption andgenerates higher solar yields, requiring a lower batterycapacity and consequently reduced cost of a renewableenergy system of up to 30%.

Intelligent Battery Management

IMEON intelligently manages storage systems bylimiting battery use. The system uses surplus energyto charge the batteries, and only discharges themwhen additional power is needed to compliment solarproduction. The IMEON Smart Grid Inverter reducesthe required storage capacity and extends the batterylife span by minimising the number of chargingand discharging cycles. Most traditional Off-Gridtechnologies manage storage using fixed thresholds, while IMEON Smart Grid Inverters continually adjustthe thresholds according to the charge (Production)and discharge (Consumption) currents. Moreover, theIMEON Smart Grid Inverter provides two differentlevels of discharge depth according to the gridavailability: The first threshold level is used to optimisethe battery life span. The second level is used to increasethe autonomy with batteries in case of grid failure. TheIMEON Smart Grid Inverter is configurable for usewith different battery types including GeL, AGM andLithium.

Day TimeSolar production feeds the consumption needs. Anysurplus power is then stored in the battery bank to avoidany loss of production. If there is any surplus of solarpower after the batteries are charged, IMEON willexport it to the public grid (optional setting).

EveningSolar production is low during the evening, thereforepower will be drawn from the batteries to cover theconsumption needs of the household. If necessary, theIMEON Smart Grid Inverter will draw additional powerfrom the public grid.

Night Time

The IMEON Smart Grid Inverter will first draw powerfrom the batteries to supply the consumption needsat night. IMEON will only draw electricity from thepublic grid if additional power is needed to meet thehouseholds’ consumption needs.

Grid Failure

The IMEON Smart Grid Inverter’s “Back-Up Mode”ensures supplying the household with power in case ofsudden grid failure. The batteries are charged to furthersecure continuous operation of certain appliances underall circumstances.

PORT ELIZABETH’s first local artisan foodfair, The Valley Market, will open its doorsto the public in the historic Baakens Valleyprecinct on Saturday, May 2.

Market-goers will be able to savour amouth-watering array of locally sourced or-ganic produce, freshly baked goods, delimeats and cheeses, as well as craft beers andboutique wines, from about 30 exhibitors.Inspired by the popular Wild Oats Market

in Sedgefield and the Neighbourgoods Mar-ket in Cape Town, the PE fair aims to contrib-ute to the ongoing rejuvenation of theCentralarea and assist with community upliftment. The event will be held in a revamped rustic

warehouse space in Alabaster Road and iscurrently scheduled for the first Saturday ofevery month but organisers hope that con-sistent supportwill allow it to becomeaweek-ly “fix”.Themarket is the brainchild of Elsje Smuts

of Trueblue Communication and Events andElaine Watson of the non-profit organisationLove Story. The two first met at Smuts’s Christmas in

the Home market last year, where Watsonwas selling crafts made by disadvantagedwomen as part of Love Story’s skills develop-ment programme.“I’ve always dreamed of PE having this

kind of market and when I met Elsje I knewshe would be the right person to run it,” Wat-son said.“We immediately clicked and started

dreaming. Our vision was the same – to seean innovative, high-calibre approach to mar-kets, with a festive family atmosphere.”Smuts said the most important aspect

would be the quality, variety and flavour ofthe food on offer.“We want to create an inspiring feast for

the senses that keeps people coming back.”She said every facet of the visitors’ experi-

ence had been factored into the planning anddevelopment of their concept.“Itmust be anamazing experience from the

minute they park their cars towhen they exitthe market with a bag of delicious treats.”Smuts said picnic tables would allow

friends and families to linger longer andshare a wholesome meal together.Although the market is at present limited

to food items, she said the organisers wouldconsider opening it up to crafters and otherartisans in the near future.Entry costs R10 per person, with a portion

of the proceeds going to Love Story. The non-profit organisation ministers to the needs ofthe destitute in NelsonMandela Bay througha variety of upliftment projects, educationprogrammes and feeding schemes.Market-goers are encouraged to bring

along anyunwanted clothing or goods for dis-tribution to the needy.A limited number of stands are still availa-

THE Ocean Basket and House of Steak rallywill take place on May 2, starting at the res-taurant’s premises in Cannon Street, Uiten-hage.

This is the second round of the Algoa RallyClub 50km championship. The organiserssaid rally cars would be displayed in theparking area while officials and competitorswere busy with pre-rally preparation.

The first rally gravel stage is at Jacht Vlak-te next to the industrial park in Uitenhage, starting at 10am, then on to Motherwell adja-cent to Daniel Pienaar Road, returning toDaniel Pienaar School at noon, when the ral-ly cars will take part in a stage consisting oftar and gravel.

The school grounds will be transformed in-to a rally stage using approach roads andaround classroom buildings in a display ofcarcontrolandnavigationinthequest tobeatthe clock and produce the fastest stage times.

These stages will be repeated during theday, finishing at Ocean Basket in the late aft-ernoon. Competitors in the 50km challengehave honed their skills and fine-tuned rallycars to compete within seconds of each other,as witnessed in the last few rallies.

Neels Vosloo and Kevin Futcher, driverand navigator of a Toyota Yaris, are expectedto lead the pack after winning the last AlgoaSteelRally.BryanHeine(DatsunSSS),JohanViljoen (Volkswagen Golf), and Ross Bartle,

Nico Smith and Rufus Neethling, drivingVolkswagen Polos, are all in with a chanceof producing an overall win.

Class contenders who score equal pointsfor class wins and championship contendersare the Volkswagen Citi Golfs of RikusSchmidt, Ashley Bezuidenhout, Stephno Pi-eterse, Melissa Hayman, Gavin Murphy andRuan Gerber. The Toyotas of Jan Vosloo andChris Johnson may just spoil the Volkswag-en party.

Spectators are welcome to follow the rallywhere spectator areas have been created, free of charge, including at Daniel PienaarSchool. For more information on the rally, visit www.algoarallyclub.co.za. – REPORTER

RELENTLESS RUGBY, that about sums upwhatwe saw fromSouthAfrican teamsat op-posite ends of the country – Johannesburgand Cape Town – last weekend. Great stuff, though diametrically different.Hands up those who remember H J San-

derson, the revered multi-year president ofthe Transvaal Rugby Football Union.Wouldn’t he be proud of the Lions headcoach, Johan Ackermann, and the way theburly former Springbok has brought theGauteng franchise along. No doubt he’d beequally proud of captain, Warren Whiteley, and the never-say-die manner in which theNo. 8 has brought Die ou Transvaal SuperRugby team along. The Lions’ 34-29 defeat of the Cheetahs at

Ellis Park was a match that also heralded asparkling return to form of Elton Jantjiesand the claim to more green-and-gold hon-ours later in the year of himself and others, including the inspirational Whiteley. The single disappointing factor of the Jo-

hannesburg clash was the poor turn-out ofthe Gauteng crowd itself. Indeed, the famedEllis Park looked embarrassingly bare.How-ever, perhaps the team’s efforts – six consec-utive wins in 10 appearances, will persuadethe City of Gold’s rugby faithful to return toa more rigorous BOB (bums on benches) inthe near future. Damnit all, man, at this rateAckermann’s lads could become genuinecontenders for the Super Rugby Champion-ship!What very different games these two SA-

based 80-minute thrillers would turn out tobe. After the cut and thrust of Ellis Park –Cheetahs leading 10-7 at halftime and eachside going on to cross the opposition try-lineon four occasions – came a dour yet thrillingencounter at Newlands as the Stormers andBulls went at each other with a vengeancethat from start to finish had their support-ers’ hearts beating in double-quick time. What a spectacle this duel produced with

ference between the two teams could be ac-credited to the superior goalkicking of fly-half Demetri Catrakilis (five from five)against fellow-pivot Handre Pollard, whomissed four penalty goal attempts. Therewas little to choose between the two fly-halves otherwise and come World Cup timein England, Springbok coach Heyneke Mey-er will have more than enough talent tochoose from with the likes of Pat Lambie,Pollard, Catrakilis and Jantjies all challeng-ing for selection.Indeed, the picture is looking increasingly

bright throughout for Meyer with stand-outperformances from the likes of back-to-formSchalk Burger, Dwayne Vermeulen, CheslinKolbe, Francois Hougaardt, Cornal Hen-dricks, perhaps even little Faf de Klerkamong others.NOW, if you get your kicks from the sight

of two grown men lambasting the hell out ofone another, you’ll be sure not to miss the“bout to end all bouts” – so they’re callingit – between FloydMayweather jnr andMan-ny Pacquiao in Manila on Sunday at 4.45 amSA time. Who will emerge victorious? Whowill be the new king of fisticuffs. Who cares?Well er... millions actually.

AFTER taking its first tentative steps twoyears ago, the SPAR Little Ladies’ Race hasbecome an essential part of the SPAR Wom-en’s Challenge family in Port Elizabeth.

The organisers said the “little sister” race, run annually on May 1, catered for girlsyounger than nine years and served as a cur-tain raiser to themain event, which this yeartakes place on Saturday, May 9, at PollokBeach.SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager,

Abri Swart, said the event was unique to theprovince, as none of the four other regionalraces offered something similar.Swart said the 2.5kmchallengehadbeen in-

troduced so that little ones could also partici-

pate and experience some of the fun of the5km and 10km feature events.“It has given little ladies an opportunity to

participate in an event that promotes healthyliving and an active lifestyle from a youngage.”While the race was not widely publicised,

he said it had proved immensely popularsince its introduction.“This event has never been advertised. It

has only been throughword ofmouth thatwehave received hundreds of entries and con-tinue to do so year after year.“It’s amazing to seehowcompetitive the lit-

tle ones are. They are so enthusiastic and re-ally look forward to a fun day out,” Swartsaid. He said it provided aperfectmother-daugh-

ter bonding opportunity, as moms could run

alongside their children and keep an eye onthem. The organisers were confident the event

would not only continue to grow, but also ex-tend the retailer’s outreach function.“We trust that the Little Ladies’ Race will

grow every year and that we will be able togive back to organisations within our com-munity that are involved with assisting chil-dren in need.”This year the Little Ladies’ Race will have

its own charitable beneficiary, Cupcakes ofHope, which aims to raise awareness andfunds for the early detection of childhoodcancers. For more information find SPARWomen’s

PARTICIPANTS in next month’s PwC GreatZuurberg Trek are set to enjoy all the creaturecomforts with the introduction of a luxury sa-fari tent stay for the three-stagemountainbikerace near Addo.

Organisers have brought in the “glamping”or glamorous camping option as the ZuurbergMountain Village, which plays host to theevent fromMay 29 to 31, has been fully bookedby riders.Race organiser Rob Hayter said the safari

tent dwellers would enjoy the same spectacu-lar views of the northernmountain range anda good night’s rest in a warm bed, as well asfine dining at the four-star hotel. He said the 20 luxury tents each offered two

single beds with duvets, linen and pillows, acamp dressing table, and a pair of comfortablecamp chairs.Newly renovated ablution facilities with

hot-water showers would also be available onsite, just across the road from the hotel, hesaid.“With Addo right on our doorstep, the luxu-

ry tent gives one that authentic African safariexperience that makes this area world fa-mous.”For its second edition, the 195km stage race

has also partneredwith SouthAfricanNation-al Parks to access rarely visited parts of theAddo Elephant National Park.“On day one, we enter the park and descend

over 10km to the valley floor below. I believethis to be one of the most fantastic views inSouth Africanmountain biking,” said Hayter.Riders would also spend more than half of

the second stage within park boundaries andbe amazed by the magnificent views from thetop of the northern ridge of the Zuurberg, hesaid.“To the south, one sees the coastline of Port

Elizabeth with the citrus orchards of the Sun-days River Valley below.“To thenorth, it overlooks the vastKaroo all

the way up to Somerset East. This side of thepark isknownfor its ancient cycadsandridersride within two metres of some of these.”On the final day, riders test their technical

skills on the renowned singletrack at Hayter-daleTrails beforeheadingbackup thehistoricZuurberg Pass to finish at the hotel.Hayter said there were very few races coun-

trywide that couldoffer thediversityof terrainthatGreat ZuurbergTrek riderswould experi-ence.“We believe we have a race that is challeng-

ing but not unduly so, with an abundance ofcomfort and convenience.“For us it’s about offering not only a great

outdoor experience but also a great one in-doors.”The event is open to 100 two-person teams

with a limited number of entries still availa-ble.Enter at www.greatzuurbergtrek.co.za before

STUN GUNS& TAZERS

Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable anattacker. If shocked for 1-2 seconds, it will cause muscle spasms and adazed mental state. If shocked for 3-5 seconds, it will cause loss ofbalance and muscular control, total mental confusion and disorientation, leaving him dazed. If shocked for longer periods the attacker can loseconsciousness. Under no circumstances can you suffer a charge backto your own body, even if the assailant touches you while you are usinga stun gun on him. As it is a non-lethal weapon there are no legalimplications for the user.

A tazer fires two small dart-like electrodes that penetrate the body of the attacker. The electrodes stay connectedto the main unit and conduct the electric shock through the electrodes into the body. They can fire up to a distanceof 5M.The effects of the tazer aremuch the sameas those delivered by the stun gun
