ACAMPAIGN has been launched bythe municipality to target a syndi-cate which is manipulating meterboxes and charging commissionfees frombothbusinessandprivate

consumers, costing the Municipality millions ofrands in electricity revenues.

AccordingtostudiesconductedbytheMunici-pality’s newly-appointed service provider, Am-at, who have been contracted to develop strate-gies that will curb electricity theft, there hasbeena lossof revenueinmoreof themetro’s sub-urbs than the townships because of this syndi-cate.

They say the syndicate operates with corruptmunicipal officials who have advanced techno-

logical equipment which can alter electricitymeters in homes around the Metro.

At a media launch on Friday, Amat spokes-person, Nceba Faku, said people living in afflu-ent areas should not be fooled by these syndi-cates which deceive them into thinking thatcross wires in townships make up the majorityof cable theft and loss of revenue.

“Whatpeopledonotknowisthatsomeofthese

officials whom you let into your home are tam-pering with your cables and you end up payinghigher tariffs. Some people in affluent areashave not paid their electricity bill for years nowbecause the municipality cannot access theirmeter due to tampering. Make no mistake, wewill expose these criminals,” said Faku.

According to the Municipality, R218 mil-lion was lost this past financial year due toelectricity theft. Amat said of that revenueloss, half was lost at businesses and in thesuburbs.“We know there is a problem of wire cross-

ing in the townships and we intend dealingwith this issue but we cannot deny that busi-nesses need to play their part to try to curbthe situation. Businesses will also be target-ed in this campaign,” said Faku.Portfolio head of Budget and Treasury, Ba-

lu Naran, said they have mandated Amat toreduce revenue loss at R50 million eachyear.Mayor Benson Fihla said, “The challenge

facing us is going to require many tough andunpopular decisions to be made. The abilityto take these decisionswhile retaining broadsupport across all our communities and sec-tors will only be possible if the leadershipand administration have the necessary con-fidence and trust of communities. This is atask that can only be achieved by a leader-ship and community with the will to suc-ceed.

“Our role as local government, togetherwith Amat, will be multi-faceted and key inensuring that we meet the challenges, ad-dress disparities, unify our communitiesand assist in theNMBMservice delivery anddevelopmental mandate.“Given the Amat terms of reference, I am

convinced that their invaluable contribu-tion will serve this metro, as expected, in anefficient, effective and sustainable way,”Mayor Fihla said.Amat project manager, Mthu Ntlangani,

said their approach in addressing this syndi-cate and power line conductors is based on

the smart GSMsolutionwhich detects termi-nation in continuity and voltage drop onlines. “The system is capable of implement-ing different sensors and GPRS/GSM com-munication to detect feed lines, key powersupply lines and crucial reticulations whichwill be implemented in the municipal anti-theft monitoring systems.”Ntlangani said they would also develop a

centralised database system that would col-late all dues for the municipality across alldepartments. “The idea is to have a singlesource information centre about each cus-tomer and funds owed to the municipality

whether they betraffic fines, ratesor services,” saidNtlangani.Ntlangani said

they had employed22 highly qualifiedfield workers whowould be visitinghouses under detec-tion with theirbranded black vehi-cles for a period ofthree years. The company also

plans to rewardgood-paying cus-tomers in their loy-alty programmewith packages oncethey say a framework has been de-veloped by the mu-nicipality.Faku said they

were also planningto introduce vend-ing points for easypay access to im-prove municipalrevenue and cus-tomer service.

ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

IN AN effort to be more visible and enablemore interaction with the community, mem-bers of the Gelvandale SAPS will henceforthbe seen patrolling the area on state-of-the-artmountain bikes.

The six bicycles and helmets worth overR40 000 were donated to the station by Gelvan-dale SuperSpar and Coca-Cola. The Al FidaaFoundation supplied a nutritious meal to ap-proximately 500 community members at theofficial handover of the bicycles at the Helen-vale Resource Centre last week.

Gelvandale SAPSstation commanderBrigadier LaurenceSoekoe was excitedabout launching theMountain Bike Patroland said that the bikeswould be utilised toget closer to the com-munity. “Our work isnot just about appre-hending suspects. Itgoes wider than that.We are here to supportthe community in

talking to them, and to help solve their prob-lems,” Soekoe said.

Gelvandale SuperSpar retailer Craig Her-man said they had identified the need to as-sist the Gelvandale SAPS.

“As a business within the northern areaswe acknowledge the huge challenges thecommunity we trade in is faced with. Withthe high unemployment rate within theHelenvale area we are obliged through ourcommunity service responsibility to at-tempt to make a difference,” explained Her-man.

“With our community partners the Gelva-ndale SAPS we identified the need to assistthe police with their fight against crime.Brigadier Soekoe highlighted the need formountain bikes to establish visible streetpatrol and the police’s relationship withinthe community. We approached our busi-ness partners Coca-Cola who immediatelyembraced the idea of sponsoring the six

mountain bikes. From this point on all else fellinto place with the likes of Spar DC and Al Fidaawho generously all came on board.”

“Each dish was judged according to taste, tex-ture, presentation and level of difficulty,” saidWestraadt. She said Hassim’s perfectly pre-pared pepper steak impressed the judges, whileGoodwin’s chocolate lasagne dessert hit thesweet spot.

But in the end it was Nagan’s mashed potatoballs that bowled the critics over.

“They were unique and decadently delicious.Aside from his culinary skills, Justin’s flair, en-thusiasm and presentation really set himapart,” said Westraadt. “He’s quite determinedto become a chef when he grows up.”

For his efforts, Nagan scooped the first prizeof R5 000 worth of SPAR shopping vouchers.

Runner-up Goodwin and third-placed Has-sim walked away with R1 000 and R500 invouchers respectively. All three finalists re-ceived MP3 players and SPAR hampers.

Westraadtsaidtheaimof theannualcompeti-tion was to encourage children to explore theirlove of cooking and being in the kitchen. “Wewant to expose our future shoppers to healthyand exciting eating and to teach them that thereare alternatives to takeaway meals. and junkfood.”

AS will be the case on all 5 Wednesdays ofJuly, between 10:00and 14:00, 20 eagerpar-ticipants with their willing assistants willbe moving around various public placestesting accessibility matters and findingout firsthand, what it feels like to have touse a wheelchair.

Wednesday July 11 was no exception withthe send-off taking place from Acres Sparin Perridgevale. Notwithstanding the rainyweather the field was filled with partici-pants from the PE International Airport,Nedbank, Radisson Blu Hotel, Die Burger,Tavcor VW and Maritime Travel.

With legs strapped and task sheet in handeveryone set out into the business areas ofPE to experience 4 hours in a wheelchairand to provide feedback to the organisers,APD Nelson Mandela Bay. “The reports re-ceived will be used by our APD Team to as-sist to improve the accessibility formobilityimpaired people within business areas,”commented Brian Bezuidenhout, ExecutiveDirector at APD.

Assistant Manager at Port Elizabeth In-ternational Airport, Zinhle Ntanzi, sharedher four-hour experience relaying the chal-lenges that she experienced during her day.

“I had to the opportunity to experiencewhat people in a wheelchair on a day-to-daybasis have to go through in undertaking dai-ly tasks that able-bodied people take forgranted. As part of the activities we weregiven tasks where we had to go to variousareas to understand the challenges that peo-ple in wheelchairs face,” she said.

Documenting her experience, Ntanziwrote:

1. Using a public toilet: The entrance to thetoilet has a clink at its threshold. Whilst Ihad a helper it was also difficult to get thewheelchair into the area as same has to belifted up. Further, I noticed that the door en-trance seemed too narrow so one can hurtone’s handswheeling the chair into the area.

2. Trying to buy a postage stamp: It was in-teresting tonote that their counters are quitehigh so I could not effectively or comfortablycommunicate the service that Iwanted to theperson on the other side of the counter.

3. A hospital reception: The entire hospitalreception area is on one level, with the exep-tion of the accounts department. The hospi-talwasvery easily accessible andwell signedso I could move around easily.

4. Using an ATM: I tried to use the ATM;however the enclosure of the ATM is verynarrow and I found it challenging to get intothe ATM booth. Further I also found thatonce in the ATM booth, the actual machineseemed high for me in the wheelchair.

5. Visiting the SAPS Office: The charge of-fice was easily accessible; however the serv-ice counter was also high and the police of-ficer had to peer over the counter to attendto my matter.

“Another challenging aspect was gettingin and out of a vehicle without assistance. This seemed quite an impossible task, espe-cially in the rain. This in itself made me ap-preciate what people in wheelchairs gothrough should they be undertaking day today tasks alone,” she added.

Ntanzi said her entire experience washumbling and an eye opener, saying that shethought that shopping centres needed to bevery strict on the use of the wheelchairparking bays.

Die eerste stop was by ’n polisiekantoor.

THIS is one of themost neglected areas, espe-cially in small to medium sized enterprises. As an entrepreneur or head of a business,

it is easy to get carried away with the excite-ment of sales and re-supply or daily issues/problemsolving. These takepriority and theimportant, but seemingly not as urgent, re-sponsibility for budgeting and targets, doesnot get enough focus.Budgets and targets are ‘The road map’ –

they are the numbers representing whereyou are (budget) and where you want to go(target). They give you an overview and help you to

maximize the opportunities and spend lesstimeormoney inareas that arenotproducinga fruitful return for your efforts and your en-trepreneurial energy. The best way to get your ‘road map’ going

in the earliest days of your business is to listall your fixed expenses, and commitments –thendeterminewhatminimumsales youwillneed to get through the given month. Thisgives you your running costs – everythingabove this ‘break-even point’ is your profit. It is critical to remember that profits

should never be regarded purely as a ‘slushfund’, for example spendingmoney on leisureand enjoyment. These aspects have theirplace, but first up always ask yourself if youneed to re-invest part of the profits to growyour business or to save for a rainy day tokeep your business healthy or even give backto others in need.A good way to see the give and take in this

push - pull over profits is to see the businessas the goose that lays the golden egg. If youfeed the goose and always leave enough tomake sure there is enough to feed it, it will

keep laying the egg.History shows that four out of five busi-

nesses fail in the first 5 years even thoughthey have a product or service that peoplewant, as a result of not understanding and ap-plying the above principle correctly. Thefounder entrepreneur spends the profitswithout thinking twice when things are go-ing well – they don’t realise there may be asharp bend in the road ahead. Always makedecisions with the long term in mind. Re-member save for a rainy day, never assumeall will keep going well – have the reservesto be able to react when the sharp bend ap-pears ahead of you.A good way to think of this is that if you

are thrifty with your expenses and live on lit-tle (likenooneelse seems todo), youwill haveenough resources and reserves to give youmany options (like very few others seem tohave). By delaying gratification, always leav-ing enough so the goose is well fed, will pro-vide you many more golden eggs down theroad. This is definitely the most important prin-

ciple in budgeting - it is a vital aspect whichwarrants much more space/discussion thanthis article allows. Two books that I can recommend are ‘Man-

aging Your Money In South Africa’ (for yourpersonal budgeting needs) and ‘FinancialSkills foryourbusiness inSA’.Bothareavail-able throughallmajorbookretailers inSouthAfrica including Rehab Books and Technolo-gy – rehabilitating high prices, located at theNMMU south campus.Nextweekwewill discussTargets. Remem-

ber always, your credo should be ‘To Serve’- serve and the rewards will follow!

JOHNNY CASH fans are in for a treat as Cen-trestage brings its tribute to the popular rock-abilly, country, blues, folk and rockn roll iconin their show “Walk the Line”, taking placeat Old Grey in PE from July 16 to 19.

The universal Cash phenomenon which re-mains popular today was given a shot in thearmwith the release of the 2005 film also enti-tled “Walk the Line”, which documented therise to fame of the controversial and influen-tial singer-songwriter.Two sides of the enigmatic, rebellious leg-

end are presented in the show by long-timeCash fans Hugo Kleinhans and Lionel Hunt, the latter returning to the Centrestage fold af-ter having played ‘TheMan in Black’ spectac-ularly in a segment of an earlier production“The Good, The Band and the Ugly”.Both are ideally suited to emulate the deep

bass baritone JohnnyCashvocal timbre – andboth are superb acoustic and electric guitar-ists too.Special guest artist, vocalist and keyboard

player, Megan Du Toit, features in a Centre-stage Production for the first time as Cash’ssecond wife, long-time love interest and oft-times singing partner June Carter.

The double bass features in the second con-secutive Centrestage show, having come tothe fore in their last showTheMumfordRevo-lution.This time AndrewWarneke gets to play the

upright fretless instrumentwhichwas so cen-tral to the late nineteen fifties TennesseeThree rockabilly sound, completed by DevonVan Rooyen on drums. The show takes in some 38 classic Cash

songs, including hits played in his famousfree prison concerts such as “Walk the Line”,“Ring of Fire”, “Get Rhythm”, “Boy NamedSue”, “IGot Stripes”, “SanQuentin” and “Fol-som Prison Blues”.A fifties rockabilly salute depicting the pop-

ular sound of the time during Cash’s earlytour days is also likely to prove extremelypopular.Lionel Hunt, well known nationally as a

top-notch Elvis impersonator, comes in fromhis home in Port Alfred for the performance.“Walk the Line” promises to both replicate

and reinterpret the Johnny Cash songbookwhich is still particularly loved by audienceseverywhere.

.The show at OldGreywill start at 7:30pm.Tickets can be purchased through Com-puticket at R120 or R110 for 8 or more people.

THEHondaAccord is the flagship ofHondaAu-tomotive, and the latest derivative manufac-tured in Thailand to US specification is all newfrom the ground up.

i have been fortunate to have been able to at-tend all three of the Honda Accord modellaunches held here in 2001, 2011 and 2014, andhave witnessed the enormous progress thatHonda has made and the technological innova-tions that have been installed in these modelsthrough the years.

HondaisanincrediblesuccessstoryasaMan-ufacturer of motor cars, motorcycles, powerplants and now executive jets. The first produc-tion jet has just rolled off the line and will costabout $4 million.

TheAccordmodel is the best seller of all timeof the Honda range with 41% of all Hondas soldin theUSA.Although not too popular yet in SA,theAccordhasover17millionunitson theplan-etandissold inover140countries.Hondaisalsovery environmentally aware and all productsadhere strongly to global principles. The abso-lutely iconic S2000 sports car was discontinueddue to being unable to adhere to emission con-trols.

ThenewAccordhasgrowninsizeandiscom-pletely new, including the engines, gearboxesand suspension. The newAccordwill be awor-thy competitor to BMW, Mercedes, Audi andLexus with regard to quality, luxury and per-formance.

It is packed with features such as adaptivecruise control, and lane watch blind spot dis-play (LBD) which uses a camera to display aview of the passenger side roadway, togetherwith a collision braking warning system witha new audible and visual feature alongwith thelane keeping assist system, which also uses vis-ual and audio to alert the driver.

I ama fanof cruise control systemswhicharethe best way to avoid speed traps abounding allover the country today, to replenish state cof-fers. The Honda Accord is fitted with the mostsophisticatedadaptivecruisecontrolwhichreg-ulates yourdistancebehind the traffic ahead. Infact the cars are loaded with a myriad of safetyfeatures too numerous to mention here.

A first for Honda is the all new Active NoiseCancellation system (ANC) which uses micro-phones, signal processors and the on boardspeakers to counteract unwanted exterior

sounds such as wind, road and tyre noise. The venue for the launch was based in the

Western Cape as the roads and the beautifulscenery there provide a perfect stage to test theride and road holding characteristics. We com-menced our test drive in the V6 which is pow-ered by the most awesome 3,5 litre V6 enginecoupled to a six-speed automatic gearbox sup-plementedbypaddles on the steeringwheel.De-veloping 205 kW this model provides sports carperformance reaching the benchmark 0-100 in7.2 seconds, whilst top speed is limited to 200km/h.

.VERDICT: Quality is the name of the gamewith Honda andwewere really impressedwiththe whole range of the new cars. We are ex-tremely happy to report that Honda havedropped the manual gearbox from this range;only the automatic 5-speed and 6-speed are nowavailable as standard. Modern automatic gear-boxes do not result in excess fuel consumptionor reduce performance at all. All models havefull size spare wheels as well, a desirable fea-ture.

TestimonyThanks my hero King Aganaga

The endless fights I had with my husband lead to ten years ofseparation. As a single parent I struggle caring for my kidsnearly committed suicide but I thought about my family. Mymother then advised me to seek help from King Aganaga. Iwas touched by super natural miracles and from differentpeople he had helped. I paid R250 & he read my fortuneaccurated. I was shocked when he showed me all myproblems and enemies, then he gave me a special dogo ring(to fix my financial problem). Unexpectedly I was surprisedmy huband returned back to me within a day and today we arehappily married couple. Thanks King Aga for changing my life. Stop suffering,

I highly recommending every one with differentproblems to King Nganaga in PE or call him on

MICHAEL Zoetmulder, operational owner ofZports, has become synonomous with organ-ising sporting events of world quality in PortElizabeth and establishing the city as theWa-tersport Capital of the world.

Few know that this sports organiser, bornand bred in Port Elizabeth, not only repre-sented South Africa as a lifesaver and waseven na SA Surf Lifesaver of the Year , butis also a martial arts expert with black beltsin Ju-Jitsu and Atemi-Jitsu.Zoetmulder, who grew up in the pictur-

esque village of Redhouse on the banks of theSwartkops River, has spent his whole life inPE with the exception of a couple of monthsin Durban, 1 1/2 years in Australia and about10 years in the United Kingdom.Growing up in Redhouse he was surround-

ed by sporting role models from the localswimming club, yacht club, sailing club andthe Bluewater Bay lifesavers.“I have had a passion for sports ever since

I can remember. We are a family of 6 childrenand we were always doing something. Mybrothers all excelled in lifesaving and I fol-lowed their lead,” said Zoetmulder. He started surf lifesaving at the age of 8

years as a Nipper with Bluewater Bay SurfLifesaving Club, winning his first SA medalat the age of 9 years.“Iwas fortunate to representEP in surf life-

saving formore than 12 years and during thistime I also represented EP in still water life-saving and canoeing. My lifesaving careerpeaked in 1990 when I was named SA SurfLifesaver of the Year and won a trip to Aus-tralia, an experience I’ll never forget,” saidZoetmulder. He has won numerous SA medals in life-

saving, mostly for Surf Ski and Ironmanevents, and in 1992 after winning the SA Surf

Ski title, he spent 6months competing inAus-tralia.Whilst atUniversityhe enjoyed themartial

arts and has a black belt in Ju-Jitsu and an-other in Atemi-Jitsu whilst also spendingseveral years learning Aikido.Zoetmulder started organising sporting

events in Port Elizabeth after returning withhis family from the United Kingdom and see-ing an opportunity in the Eastern Cape forprofessionally-run sporting events.“I jumped in the deep end starting the

Ocean Racing Series, which now enters its10th season,” he said.Since then Zports has introduced several

new and exciting sporting concepts to theEastern Cape such as the Urban Run charityevent, the Bell Buoy Challenge, 3 BeachesChallenge, Run-in-Heels race and the MuckRun, aswell as securing Port Elizabeth as thefirst city in Africa to host The Color Run –the largest 5k run on the planet. They are also responsible for the manage-

ment of the SPAR River Mile, About IT Tria-thlonSummerSeries and theGlobalDiabetesWalk. When asked why he had chosen Port Eliza-

beth, he said that having visited over 30 coun-tries, he had yet to find a city which is moreconducive to bringing up a family than in theFriendly City.Zoetmulder, who is also a member of the

Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise wherehe serves as President, said he was particu-larly honoured to be named Port ElizabethCitizen of the Year – Business Category in2009 for the contribution that he had made tocharity and the local community throughZports. He said he decided on the Train Race reviv-

al as the demise of the Great Train Race, which was the largest corporate team eventin the Eastern Cape, has left a void over thepast decade.

“Together with Nelson Mandela Bay Tour-ism we’ve been looking at ways of bringingback this Man vs Machine concept for morethan 4 years now. We were due to launch theNelson Mandela Bay Train Race on the 1stSeptember last year but gave this spot to TheColor Run and moved the inaugural race tothis year,” said Zoetmulder.

. Zoetmulder encourages local communi-ties to come out on Sunday, July 27, in sup-port of the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Raceand line the streets to encourage the teams,as well as the festival grounds at the finishat the Uitenhage station. Make sure you geta copy of next’s week PE Express or visitwww.pe-express.co.za formore details on theroute and race.PEExpressand sister publica-tions, UD News, PE Express Indaba and DieBurger aremedia sponsors of theGreat TrainRace.

A LOT of adjectives are attached to sport –from complimentary to insulting. Much ofwhat we see in sport is directly influenced bythe temperament of outstanding sportsmenthemselves. Take rugby. It’s rough. It’s not forthe faint-hearted.

This was ably demonstrated last weekend– particularly on the evidence of the impor-tant Super Rugby clash at Newlands betweenwinners, the Sharks, and the Stormers, whichat times threatened to boil over with the furyof a brim-filled kettle sitting just centimetresabove red-hot coals.

An aspect of the game, as a sporting event, that must have struck many were spurts ofalmost mindless brutality that had very littlein commonwith sport, as oneunderstands themeaning of the word.

So much so, that Nick Mallett, a formerSpringbokcoach, commentingon thegameon

TV foundhimself in a seemingly grammaticalmuddle. At halftime he’d described theSharks-Stormers standoff as “lovely rugby”.Later he was to describe it as “too ill-temper-ed, too unsportsmanlike, with far too muchsnapping at the ref.” He called the constantchallenging of the referee by senior playersa bad example to young players and ordinaryrugby followers.

Even so his description of the Newlands’standoff as “lovely rugby” stood up in muchthat was to like in this unforgiving match –particularly the thinking behind certainstrategies and the intelligent execution ofthem.

When a team, as with the Sharks on this oc-casion, are desperate to stay in touch with thebusiness-end of a competition while their op-ponents, too, want simply to please their fa-natical supporters, there will always be a ro-bustness that is close to the bone.

Somewhere, however, a line needs to bedrawn between the splendour of a game inwhich players are giving their all and theaforesaid “ill-tempered, unsportsmanlike”approach. While constant questioning of theref’s decisions places him in the invidious po-sition of a cat on a hot tin roof.

So where does this leave the Sharks? Yes,they failed to book themselves a direct pas-sage to the Finals Series.

With 50points and thirdplace on theoveralllog, one point behind the Crusaders, theSharks now must first, in Durban this Satur-day, face the Highlanders in a top-six quarter-final playoff, in which a win would put themin a semifinal against Crusaders, once moreinChristchurch.A road they’ve travelled suc-cessfully before. After that, who knows?

Some will say that cricket is the most beau-tiful of all games. It looked thatway lastweek-end with young Quinton de Kock (128) and

captain, AB de Villiers (108), guiding the Pro-teas to a 339 total and a 2-1 ODI series winagainst Sri Lanka in Hambantota. This wastruly great stuff with the South Africansshowing what they are made of.

And sowe comeat last towhat soccer loversinsist is the “Beautiful Game”. And whenthere is no chewing of shoulders Luis Suarezstyle perhaps it still qualifies as such. Cer-tainly there were many beautiful moments inGermany’s 1-0 defeat of Argentina in the Bra-zil-based World Cup. It was tight, but a well-deserved win coming after 122 minutes ofplay.

ForBrazil itwas aWorldCup of bittermem-ories – the worst the 7-1 defeat by Germany.Perhaps a drop less coffee might have helped.Remember the song, “They got an awful lotof coffee in Brazil”? Too much of a good thingcan be bad for you. Bad for your soccer, too, maybe?

THE BATTLE for supremacy between LewisHamilton and Nico Rosberg has been so en-thralling that somehow the Formula 1 seasonis already on the cusp of its tenth round.

Hockenheim returns for the first timesince 2012 to not only the new hybrid Formu-la but also to a new pecking order.

In 2012, the Hockenheimring had its firstintroduction to both DRS and Pirelli tyres.Red Bull Racing and Lotus arrived at thatGrand Prix as the likely podium contenders.Ferrari’s FernandoAlonsowon the race fromJenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen.

The circuit’s 4.574 km layout is a blend oflong straights and final sectormedium-speedcorners. The hairpin in the first sector of thelap is a key area for overtaking which placescommands good braking performance. De-spite a relatively short lap, driver and engi-neers need to strike a balance between top-speed and downforce.

“You’d like to have the downforce for thestadium and to keep it steady on the brakesbut equally you don’t want too much drag onthe straights,” says Red Bull driver DanielRicciardo.

The final sector is not favourable for over-

taking but the stadium section is a vital ele-ment to what makes the German GP unique. The decidedlymuted sound of Formula 1 carsshould make it possible to hear the cheeringof the crowds, should a German driver beleading the race.

The drivers will need to be vigilant at thestart of the race as the first corner tightensdramatically before opening up onto thestraight. Although there is an expanse of run-off area a touching of wheels or front-wing isa high probability.

Teams such as Ferrari will need to devotemore time towards their qualifying pace inorder to avoid starting mid-grid and the pos-sibility of a first-lap incident.

Before then, the first one and a half hoursof free practice will be the centre of attentionasWilliams’s developmentdriverSusieWolffgets another opportunity to participate in anofficial session. However, don’t expect anyflashy laptimes from the Scot. The main aimis to run through Williams’s programmewhich is geared towards set-up of the carrather than outright pace.

Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull didn’t have thepace to challenge for victory around theHockenheimring two years ago and it’s not

much is different in 2014. The reigning cham-pion is unlikely to match the Mercedes butthe Red Bull may have a better outing thisweekend thanks to the aerodynamic de-mands of the final sector.

Out of the car the verbal digs continue be-tween the twoMercedes drivers.Ahead of theGerman GP Lewis Hamilton noted that see-ing that Nico Rosberg was raised in Monacohe could not consider himself German. Ros-berg responded to his teammate by describ-ing himself as “100% German.”

It is clear that Hamilton is continuing hismethodical psychological battle against NicoRosberg as much out of the car as on thetrack. Somemay think it’s nonsense and thattheBrit should get onwith driving. However, the make-up of Lewis Hamilton, the racingdriver, dictates that he exploit every possibleadvantage, inwhichever form it is presented.

It was crucial for Hamilton to strike backat Silverstone and it will be an importantlong-term victory if he does the same thisweekend.

The biggest incentive for Lewis Hamiltonto bring that same intensity to the track isthe chance to take over the leadof thedrivers’championship.

ASPIRITEDBestmed-ShukumaMadibaz cy-cling team had their rival universities in aspin as they took a convincing win in theteam classification at the national studentchampionships at the University of Pretoriaon July 4.

With the stage times of the top three finish-ers from each institution added together, theteam from PE showed in-credible consistency to po-dium in all five stages.Their combined time of

20:24:17 was more thaneight minutes faster thanthat of defending champi-ons Tuks (20:32:23), withNWU-Pukke placing thirdin 20:35:51.Madibaz captain Gerrit

Nel said he was over-whelmed by his team’ssuccess after finishing sec-ond at last year’sUniversi-ty Sport South Africa (Us-sa) event.“We went into the tour

with the sole objective towin or, as the team saidduring preparation,‘Bring back the flowers toPE’. We did just that. It isa team event and our aim was to prove our-selves as the best cycling university outthere.”TheMadibaz also dominated the individu-

al podium, with all-rounder Marinus Prins-

loo and sprinter Waldo Gronum claimingsecond and third respectively. Their team-mate Henno Cronjé finished just off the podi-um in fourth. On the opening day, the Madibaz went out

all guns blazing in the first stage over 76km.Nel and Sean Bos put in big efforts to chasedown numerous attacks; however, a well-timed break by Tuks’s Thomas Weeks sawthe hosts get away to steal the stage. In the afternoon’s 20km time-trial, the PE

team fought back tooccupy the lowersteps of the podiumbehind Patten. The Madibaz

edged into the over-all lead on day twoafter Nel overcamea puncture to winthe 135km stage.Despite Prinsloo

losing the 2.4kmhill climb – and thepolka dot jersey – toPatten by just twoseconds on the fi-nal day, the teamwere able to fur-ther extend theirlead over Tuks.In the final stage,

a 45-minute criteri-on, Gronum got in-

to an early break with Patten that sealed thefirst two places.Nel said their successwould not have been

possible without the support of their teammanagement, sponsors and parents.
