WINTER might be the time to snuggle up, butfor four-legged friends it will be the perfecttime for some fresh air.

The Pit Stop Project, an initiative startedby Marizanne Ferreira, is a dream that hasfinally been realised and will see dogs beingable to enjoy more of the outdoors.

The opening of the Pit Stop was celebratedwith a family/market day on Saturday, Au-gust 8 at the Animal Welfare Society in Victo-ria Drive, Walmer.

The project gives dogs, mostly from Ani-mal Welfare, the opportunity to leave their

kennels and run free in a closed-off 18m x 24mfield. According to Ferreira, this project isclose to her heart and is something that shehas wanted to do for a long time.

“We say that dogs are our best friends, butwe seldom do something for them. Now, wecan at least give them a sense of freedom andenjoyment.”

Ferreira looks to create a “home away fromhome” for the pups.

Among those benefitting are pitbull Belleand husky Scooby-Doo who are now able to“socialise” at the Pit Stop field – somethingthey can’t do in their kennels.

THE current electricity tariff system is inparticular jeopardising the sustainabilityof energy-intensive industries.

Thiswas said by theNelsonMandela BayBusiness Chamber (NMBBC) during theirpresentation to NERSA at their publichearing in Johannesburg on August 6.NMBBC representatives David Mertens,

said winter months energy costs are a sub-stantial problem for industry and specifi-cally the peak tariffs.“These tariff structures are destructive

for heavy industry running continuous op-erations and simply unaffordable,” Mer-tens said.Mertens was the first to do a presenta-

tion following a presentation by Eskom atthe public hearing. He was one of onlythree other presenters from the businesscommunity to address NERSA on the topic.The purpose of the hearing was to get

public input on the proposed Cost of Sup-ply (COS) Framework to be used by li-censed electricity distributors in South Af-rica.The Framework will be a guide to licens-

ees when developing their COS studies,which will ultimately determine the priceof electricity paid by businesses and citi-zens in Nelson Mandela Bay, and the restof the country.NMBBC said they have played an active

role in protecting businesses’ interest inrelation to electricity tariffs. This was thesecond time that the Chamber presents ata NERSA public hearing in less than twomonths, following the presentation at thepublic hearings on Eskom’s selective re-opener application – which was subse-quently rejected.NMBBC said while they support the pro-

posed COS Framework, several improve-mentswere proposed byMertens, including:

) Distributors of electricity not supply-ing audited financial statements shouldnot qualify for annual tariff increases;

) Ring-fenced and audited electricity ac-counts are specifically required;

) The Framework must explicitly en-sure monies are not disappearing to non-related expenses;

) Reasonable returns must be limited toreturns on capital funded by the licensee;

) Cost reduction plans must be an essen-tial function of electricity distributors;and

) A solution for industry winter tariffsshould be found.“By implication the winter energy costs

also impact heavily on the retail sector andmany SMMEs,” said Mertens.He also requested NERSA to evaluate

this situation and find solutions to proper-ly allocate peak charges to customer cate-gories responsible for peak usage.

BEHIND every successful man, it is said thereis a woman; and when the man will be rowingacross the Atlantic Ocean the woman has to beeven-keeled.

Christelle Connacher’s husband, Stuart (49)is one of only five men who will do a solo rowof 5 000km in the annual Talisker Whiskey At-lantic Challenge in December.

Stuart, who at this stage is favoured as win-ner in the solo category, will be on the oceanbetween 50 and 90 days. The race starts at St Se-bastian La Gomera in the Canary Islands andends at English Harbour, Antigua.

He will be racing to raise funds for the Smile-Foundation which assists children with birthdeformities to undergo life-changing surgery.

Stuart’s boat for the race is currently beingbuilt in England.

Christelle, a biokineticist and mother of two,not only sees to it that Stuart eats well, but shealso assists him with his training.

Although she is very excited for her husbandand supports his solo attempt a hundred per-cent, she admitted to Express that she also isscared. “I must admitthat I am very nervous.Idon’toftentalkaboutitto Stuart, but I amscared. I have no doubtthat he is going to do

very well, but just the thought of him alone atsea in rough weather makes my tummy turn.”

On the other hand she said it is wonderful tobe able to support Stuart in reaching his goal.“It is so cool to be able to support my Bokkiein such a fantastic event. I also like to refer tothis as his ‘midlife crisis’.”

Althoughshe loves theocean, shewouldrath-er be on the beach than in the water. “Ask meto go on a boat and know that at any good timeI will have more than 3000m of sea beneath me?Forget it!”

According to her, Stuart’s attempt came as abit of a surprise. “When Stuart and I got togeth-er he was already a bit of a wild card. He havingdone several Ironman events and I river raft-ing, abseiling and Ironman, I always knew thatsomething crazy would come over time, but Idid not expect this!”

She said the whole venture has also pulledthem closer together. “We have been spendinga lot of time together. Because I am a biokineti-cist, I automatically got the title of personaltrainer, dietician and massage therapist.”

“You don’t know what you’ve got till it’sgone.” The theory of this age-old saying wastested during the Association for Personswith Physical Disabilities (APD)’s Wheel-chair Wednesday campaign in which partic-ipants had to forfeit using their legs for fourhours, every Wednesday in July, to raisefunds and awareness for people with disabil-ities.

The initiative celebrated its fourth year in2015. According to Brian Bezuidenhout, ex-ecutive director of APD, over 100 000 peoplein the Bay are living with disabilities.

The donations from the participants al-lowed for the purchase of 120 new wheel-chairs, which were handed to those in needat a ceremony, on Wednesday, August 5, atthe Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.

At the handing over ceremony, executivemayor, Danny Jordaan, commended thosewho participated in the initiative.

Media 24, of which PE Express is a publi-cation, was a media sponsor of the cam-paign.

They donated a wheelchair to MillicentRuda (29) of Kwadwesi. Millicent was bornpremature and has been in a wheelchair herentire life.

Before Media 24 stepped in, she had tomake do with an old and rusted wheelchairthat could not fold.

According to her mother, Nosandile, thenew wheelchair will help her a lot.

“It was sad for us, because she always hadto stay at home. Whenever we went to familygatherings, she would have to stay, becauseher wheelchair did not fit in the taxi. Now,that is no longer the case. I am very excitedfor her and her new gift,” the mother said.

be it Varsity Cup or provincial,” he said.The existing structures have already paid div-

idends, with Kempson coaching the MadibazYoungGunstoamassivelyimprovedthirdplaceat this year’s Varsity Cup.

Most of those players also turn out for the EPU/19 team, who have won all four of their match-es so far in the A section of this year’s CurrieCup.

Well, that’s how coach Heyneke Meyer’s hap-less men in the Springbok green and gold lookedfacing the Argentine bogeyman known as the“Bagada”.

That’swhat,downArgentinaway,theycalltheno-hooking, eight-man-push scrum, a monsterthat’s designed to shove the heaviest farmer’stractor out of sight.

SA rugby first made acquaintance with themonster on the Argentine tour of our country in1965, and would appear regularly, with varyingsuccess, from then on.

Last Saturday at Durban’s Kings Park the“monster” was in top gear. It had the Springboksontheirkneesafter80minutes.Italsobewilderedeven the harshest hometown critics, who expect-ed a walk in the park against the Argentineans.

The weekend papers were full of it. “BokShocker!” said one. That was no maybe, eventhough Jean de Villiers’ men managed to rectifytotal disarray, after a change-ends score of 27-13

that had Coach Meyer looking totally shocked,and no wonder for things had started horren-dously, with the visitors scoring a try after just1min 41sec and leading 7-0 with the conversion.

As the Springboks fumbled and stumbledabout, substituting their ironman hooker, Bis-marck du Plessis, swopping flyhalf Handre Pol-lard for Pat Lambie among several otherchanges, the air of panic was fully established.

So what now of the Boks’ ambitions of liftingthe World Cup starting in England in just overamonth’stime?Don’t forgetthedefeat landedtheSpringboks in the unimaginable position of lastin the shortened form of the Four Nations RugbyChampionship – wooden-spoonists without apoint after the single round of matches!

And what of the return “friendly” that liesahead in Buenos Aires this Saturday? Can thecoach afford to tinker much with the team at thislate stage? One can only imagine the sleeplessnights haunting coach Meyer.

But let’s give credit where it’s due. While theBoks, wild-eyed with panic, seemed unable to

stem the flow with which Los Pumas were per-forming, it became increasingly evident that thevisitors were in full control – both up front andin a backline that was full of innovation, estab-lishing an ascendancy the Boks simply couldn’tmatch.

After having made 11 changes to the team thatfaced New Zealand and then Australia, thesmoothnesswithwhichtheSouthAmericansop-erated was remarkable to say the least.

While the forwards soon established hard-nosed ascendancy in the scrums and mauls, cen-tre Marcelo Bosch and young Juan Imhoff, in hisfirst cap for Argentine, were full of ideas. Boschnot only racked up a try but a long-range penaltyand a soaring drop-goal. But star of the occasion,with two fine tries, was the elusive Imhoff.

Yes, the Boks – particularly Bryan Habana,DamiandeAllende,SchalkBurger,MarcellCoet-zee and locks Lood de Jager and Eben Etzebeth– managed to establish some parity as the gameprogressed. Yet the Boks, though winning a fairamount of possession were virtually forced totheir knees by the Bagada scrumming. So whatof this weekend’s “friendly” in Buenos Aires?

Rugby’safunnyoldgame.Evenincircumstan-ces as dire as these, a reverse of this nightmareisn’tunthinkable.Strangethingsdohappen–butit will take a mighty effort physically – but alsotactically.

THE Madibaz football team are fighting tokeep their Varsity Football campaign aliveafter going down 0-2 to the University of Pre-toria at the Tuks Sport Stadium in Pretorialast week.

After three rounds, the team from PortElizabeth are languishing at the bottom ofthe log and have everything to play for withfourmore fixtures remainingbefore theplay-offs.

“We are down but not out of this competi-tion,” said Madibaz head coach Graeme Har-rison.

“Our log position is not favourable at themoment but we are not giving up hope. Weare going to fight until the end.”

Harrison said the final score did not accu-rately reflect how evenly matched the twosides had been.

“I wouldn’t say that Tuks dominated us.We conceded a silly goal and they also got apenalty.

“So once again a lapse of concentration ledto them taking one over on us,” he said.

He said his players had been working hardon their attacking strategy and ball posses-sion and would continue to focus on thesethings ahead of tomorrow’s game.

“We’re not going to stop what we’re doingand we are just hoping that, once we get thatfirst goal, things will start turning aroundfor us. We just need that one breakthrough.”

Harrison said the team have made maxi-mumuse of their time to regroup before theirfirst home game against log leaders North-West University tomorrow, August 13.

“Right now it seems as though all the oddsare against us and everyone is writing us off.But we are going to come back from this; weare going to fight hard and we are not goingto give up.”

The NWU game kicks off at 6.30pm at theMadibaz Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
