Helping Christians in Iraq
Iraq has been in the news for many decades now. The United States formed an alliance with Iraq in the 1980’s against Soviet influences and radical Islam in Iran. Then there was the Gulf War in 1990-91 when U.S. and coalition forces attacked Iraq after Iraq invaded Kuwait. We have heard and seen many years of tumult in that country since. We have now come upon a time when it affects the church in a startling way. Christians in Iraq (yes, there are many) are being persecuted and killed by the ultra-radical Islamic group ISIS. Many have lost their homes, possessions, means of making a living, and their lives. Relief efforts for these our brothers and sisters in Christ have begun, and there is much more to do. It is promising to see that U.S. aircraft are instrumental in gaining back Iraq cities and territory, and ISIS is being pushed back. However, thousands of fellow believers in Iraq have a long, long way to go to rebuild what they can of their former lives. We can help them by teaming up and pooling our contributions in a new fund started by our church to provided funds for those in deep need. This type of work is quite delicate because of our mission and mercy presence in many non-Christian countries. We in no way wish to heighten the risk to our faithful workers. Reporting on the use of funds in this area will be muted for obvious reasons (2 Corinthians 8–9). The new Fund to Aid Christians under Persecution is a response by the LCMS to impact our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing death or persecution, primarily in countries where the LCMS does not have an international mission presence through official missionaries and other LCMS or partner church personnel. Donations made to the fund will be bundled into one or more grants that will be disbursed through appropriate nonprofit human-care and relief agencies. That fund is a restricted account, kept separate from other designated funds, in order to facilitate financial management, reporting and auditing. Grant-recipient agencies that have been vetted to determine their capacity for getting aid into parts of the world the LCMS cannot reach directly and in ways that do not conflict with or subvert the Christian faith as articulated in Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. freeissue/index.html and download a free copy of the June/July Lutheran Witness, which contains additional resources
on contemporary Christian persecution.
It is time for us to take the news we are getting in the morning paper and the evening news about this persecution and act!
Pray for these brothers and sisters as we commend them to God’s care and keeping. Support them with financial contri-
butions that will provide them with food, water, and basic needs so they can survive this persecution.

School and Childcare News
Our new school year chapel/Bible theme was chosen by our faculty at the end of last year and it reads from 1 Peter 4:10-11: “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others… If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”
This year our PTO has adopted a new program called “Families Serving Together” (FST). Our families are encouraged to give the gift of service either by donating time/talent or treasure. We are aiming for 10 hours a year for each family. They also have the option of giving $10 an hour if they can’t serve with their time or talent. There are many opportunities for people to get involved in supporting our church, school, and community. If you would like to serve in this ministry, too, please see Donna Einspahr or any PTO officer. Watch the PTO bulletin board that looks like a shield in the School lobby for details of events and needed service.
I look forward to this coming year and SERVING in ways God has planned for us to do together through his people here at Christ Lutheran Church and School.
MANY THANKS: Thank you to all those who came out to help with our annual clean-up day in August. We were able to get many projects done. There are still items to be attended to, but together we can continue to work on those this fall.
Thank you to those that attended our second annual Back-to-school Prayer Warrior event. We had a committed group of faithful people who went around campus praying for God’s blessings on our new school new year. We can’t wait to see what God has planned for our ministry here at Christ Lutheran.
