Reminder to all members

of the congregation:

When you come to worship services each

weekend, be sure to check the lay ministry

charts at the back of the sanctuary to see if

there are any empty serving spots for the cur-

rent or following weekend. Our team leaders

do a fantastic job each month contacting peo-

ple on their teams to try to fill these spots, but

sometimes despite their best efforts there are

still openings. As always, your willingness to

assist is greatly appreciated!

We would like to thank our AMAZING congregation for all of the donations and volunteers that helped to make our VBS such a success! We helped to spread His Word to 57 kids, ages preschool thru 6

th grade,

and made some awesome discoveries - the most important being “God is with us wherever we go!” We are so lucky to be a part of such a caring and giving church family!

A special thanks to all of our middle and high school volunteers, as well as Colleen Jennings, LeAnn Ede, Lanette Pint, Karen Hartman, Lynne Rasmussen, and Riley State! Thank you!!

Adult Choir Schedule

September 2016

September 4 - OFF September 11 - OFF September 18 - WELCOME BACK!! Rehearsal at 9:30 A.M. in the Church Sanctuary September 25 - Rehearsal at 9:30 A.M.

New members are always welcome!!

Here are some reasons to join the church choir: No auditions or solos required! People who are involved in music live longer

and are healthier. “To sing is to pray twice.” For the intellectual stimulation (you are using

both sides of your brain simultaneously!) Choir allows praise with body, mind, spirit,

and voice. Fun and fellowship with a great group of

people! To sing praises to our God and King!

For more information, contact any choir member or Kathy Moorhouse (927-5594). Hope to see

YOU on the 18th at 9:30 A.M. in the sanctuary!

The Women's Group will travel to Sunset Ridge Winery in Dubuque on Sunday, September 11th.

We will leave the church parking lot around 1:45 P.M. and enjoy music, pizza, and wine from 3:00-6:00

P.M. Women of all ages are invited! There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex. Call Vicki Frei-burger at 920-8896 with questions.

~ Girlfriends In God ~

Girlfriends in God (G.I.G.) will begin their new study, Breathe by Priscilla Shirer, on Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall.

It is so easy to drift into the world of busyness, espe-cially with the increasing demands of women. Unfor-tunately, the busyness won't stop. It will wear and tear at your heart...unless you learn to breathe.

Breathe is simply a guide to a life of peace and rest, where you can find comfort in the living God who longs to spend time with you. This Bible study includes 5 sessions of teaching by Priscilla Shirer with 4 weeks of homework in a reflective, journaling format.

See Cathy Glew or Tanya Burnett for more details and if you would like a journal.

Friends at First Lutheran,

Greetings from Southern Illinois. I pray this note finds you doing well. I want to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation for all the support, care, and encouragement in my discernment and call to ordained ministry.

On July 9, I was surrounded with family, friends, and folks from various faith commu-nities as I was ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament. On August 1, we began our calls; Melissa at Mt. Calvary (De Soto) and First Lutheran (Murphysboro) and Paul at Epiphany Lutheran Church (Carbondale). On August 28, we will be offi-cially installed as the pastor at our respec-tive congregations.

Our family of five is adjusting to life in a new place, having two working clergy, and new pre-

schools. We give thanks for three congrega-tions who welcome our family and who have already been great partners in ministry.

If you are in Southern Illinois, please stop by and see us. Here is our new contact information:

The Watermans 112 S. Oak St. De Soto, IL 62924 Paul: (618) 967-4279 Melissa: (618) 967-4460

We ask that you keep us in your prayers as we continue to adjust to our new normal. Thanks again for your encouragement and support!

God's Peace,

Pastors Paul and Melissa Waterman + Sophia, Anna, and Gabriel

2016 Feast at First Thank You

Because of the many people who volunteered their time, it was possible to have another suc-cessful Feast at First fair food stand.

Thanks to those of you who worked in the kitchen at church, baked pies, worked at the fair in the food stand, and other duties such as planning, cleaning, setting up, and tearing down. There were 94 different people who volunteered their time, and 37 of those people served more than one shift. Eight people worked all seven days. Twenty-two different ladies baked 59 pies. In the kitchen at church, thirteen different people worked each morning with seven of them working more than one shift. I don’t want to list all who helped for fear of leaving someone

out, but I would especially like to thank Dennis Wiedenman again this year for being my right hand man.

I would also like to thank those who gave a cash donation. A special thanks goes to Pat & Car-olyn Maloney for donating the bacon, breakfast sausage, and brats and to Keith & Norma Borcherding for donating all the ground beef. Also this year, we had a new “used” refrigera-tor donated to the food stand by Harlin & Sandy Gilje.

Our sales this year were slightly higher from last year mainly due to the great weather. A state-ment of the expenses and deposits will (hopefully) appear in next month’s Lamplighter. Again, thanks for a job well done by all of you who helped.

John Zietlow, Chairman Feast at First

NALC News NALC Convocation

August 10-12, 2016 focuses on

“Holy God, Holy Lives”

More than 400 NALC members gathered August

10-12 for the 2016 NALC Convocation in Ana-

heim, Calif., around the theme, “Holy God, Holy

Lives.” Major presentations were provided by

the Rev. Dr. Malcolm Guite of the University of

Cambridge, England, and musician Steve Bell

from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They combined to

lead devotions during the Convocation and led a

poetic and musical reflection on the theme.

Prof. Guite also gave an address entitled, “C.S.

Lewis: ‘Friendship and Holiness.’”

The Rev. Dr. James Nestingen, a noted Lutheran

historian, led a Bible study and was preacher for

the Communion service. “Holy Families” will be a

special NALC emphasis as a part of the 2017

celebration of the 500th anniversary of the

Reformation. A variety of resources will be availa-

ble for congregations and families.

The NALC Mission Festival began the Convo-

cation under the theme, “Faith is Made Whole in

Community.” Time on Wednesday and Thursday

was spent focusing on what it means for the NALC

to be a Mission-Driven church. Speakers included

Bishop John Bradosky, Pastor Gemechis Buba,

Assistant to the Bishop for Missions, and Gary

Pecuch of faithwebbing.com. Delegates also fo-

cused on developing mission plans for their con-

gregations and Mission Districts.

Elected to the NALC Executive Council to

four-year terms were Lynn Kickingbird of Ed-

mond, Okla., and Pastor Kenneth Kimball of

Waterville, Iowa. Pastor David Schafer of Wau-

kon, Iowa, was elected to the Court of Adjudica-

tion. The Convocation also ratified the election of

four people to the NALC-Canada Section Govern-

ing Board.

North American Lutheran Seminary Board

of Regents members were elected. Pastor Cathi

Braasch of Elwood, Neb.; Donna Evans of Pitts-

burgh, Pa.; and Pastor Jeffray Greene of Brooks,

Ga., were elected to six-year terms. Bishop Paull

Spring of State College, Pa., was elected to a four

-year term to fill a vacancy on the board.

2017 budgets were approved. The Convoca-

tion approved a $2 million operating budget for

the NALC. Budgets were also approved for the

NALC’s two designated funds: $140,500 for the

Great Commission Fund and $525,160 for the

Fund for Theological Education (which includes

the North American Lutheran Seminary). Treasur-

er Ryan Schwarz reported that NALC “income is

very substantially below budget.” Many delegates

expressed concerns about the shortfall and com-

mitted to addressing support for the NALC in their

congregations or encouraging gifts by individuals.

The Braaten-Benne Lectures in Theology,

the annual theological conference which precedes

the Convocation, focused on theological perspec-

tives on the Person of Christ. Five speakers ex-

plored the theme from different theological per-

spectives. The speakers were Dr. Carl Braaten, Dr.

Phillip Cary, Dr. Wesley Hill, Dr. Mickey L. Mattox,

and Dr. Michael Pasquarello III.

Video recordings of the NALC Convocation and

the Braaten-Benne Lectures on Theology will be

available for viewing online at www.thenalc.org.

Documents from the Convocation and daily sum-

maries are also available online.
