What is Walk With Me all about? Easter Seals Walk With Me is an opportunity for anyone and everyone to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities in our community. By walking—or supporting a walker in their fund-raising efforts—funds are raised that allow Easter Seals to provide services that help people learn to walk, talk and perform other skills essential to daily living; find fulfilling jobs; reach individualized goals early in life; age with dignity; and participate in camping and recreation programs. I personally will match the first $500.00 dollars that I receive in contribu-tions. Help me help the lives of others in our community!

Why am I walking? As a member of the Rochester community and the Easter Seals board I want to help make a difference in the lives of people in my community. I trust Easter Seals as a fiscally-responsible organization. I'm looking forward to enjoying being outdoors and having a great day!

Why do I need your help? I'm committed to making a difference. With your help we can join Easter Seals in creating solutions that change lives for children and adults with disabilities. Every dollar we raise benefits Easter Seals clients. Please give what you can! I am proud to support Easter Seals, as the mission statement says Easter Seals New York provides exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities Check back often to see what I’m up to! http://www.easterseals.com/site/TR?px=3794676&fr_id=2896&pg=personal

HWS Tutor of the Year!

Jean Baptiste – Hobart College ’14 – Tutor of the Year This year’s Hobart College Tutor of the Year goes to an exceptional first year student. Male tu-tors are a rare commodity in America Reads, so it was no surprise that the boy students took to him immediately. He has worked with different boys throughout the year and has had a positive impact on them all. The boys look up to him and think of him as a role model. He always comes early to sessions to meet the children when they get off the bus and is always friendly to every-one. He works hard to keep the children focused and to teach them as much as he can. He is more than simply a tutor to the students; especially at such a young age, these students need guid-ance in their lives. With his help, these students have made progressive gains in their academic and reading abilities. He also earned Tutor of the Month in the fall semester. For his outstanding dedication and his commitment to being both a tutor and a mentor, we are very pleased to name Jean Baptiste Tutor of the Year. Jasmine Baker – William Smith College ’11 – Tutor of the Year This year's William Smith Tutor of the Year award goes to an extraordinary tutor who, with the exception of the one semester she was abroad, has participated in America Reads every semester of her college career. For seven semesters she has dedicated her Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings to helping students at St. Stephen's elementary school learn to read. She has an amaz-ing attendance record, and comes to each session excited to help her student. She is dedicated to their success and is always willing to work with an extra student if someone is absent. Former co-ordinator Heather Crosgove '10, reflecting on this tutor, said "She has a lot of patience and under-standing…she always came to session with such a positive mood, which put all of the other tu-tors and children in a good mood as well! She was ready and willing to work and help a child im-prove." We are thrilled to award Tutor of the Year to Jasmine Baker.

Every 26 seconds a student in America drops out of high school, producing one million dropouts annually. As a City Year corps member you can help lead the change in this crisis. City Year is a nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full‐time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities. City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps. We are currently hiring corps members for the 2011‐2012 corps year beginning August 15! Corps members work in ele‐mentary schools, middle schools and high schools in the areas with the greatest needs. We have 19 sites across the country, including Providence, RI and New York, NY. This is an incredible opportunity to help in the community while developing your professional skills and earning money to continue your educa‐tion or pay back student loans. Apply online by MAY 15.

Unsung Hero: Kelsey Lagana

Posted: Sunday, May 1, 2011 12:00 pm What she does: Lagana, a 2010 graduate of William Smith College in Geneva, works in the Ameri-

Corps/Vista program through the Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Center for Community Engage-

ment and Service Learning. She primarily spends her time coordinating programs with the Boys and

Girls Clubs and working on the Geneva Reads initiative.

One of her projects this past semester involved formalizing volunteer opportunities for HWS students at

the Boys and Girls Clubs locations on Goodman Street and at the Community Center; one accomplish-

ment was working out a transportation system for the volunteers. About 60 students are helping out at

the clubs, she said.

Lagana, who graduated with double majors in political science and American studies, plans to continue

working in the AmeriCorps/Vista program for another year.

“I feel like I’ve gotten into so much and started projects, I’d really like to come full circle,” she said.

Why she does it: After graduation, Lagana — who is originally from New Paltz — decided to work with

the AmeriCorps program because she wanted a little time before heading to graduate school to study

education policy. Her efforts with the Geneva Reads program as a student also whetted her appetite for

more community work.

Lagana has a very personal connection to community service. Her father died when she was just 14 and

he was involved in numerous service efforts, she said. Lagana joined her high school Community Ser-

vice Club and started doing projects “as a way to connect with a part of who he was,” she explained.

When Lagana arrived at the Colleges, she said, she headed to the community service center during her

first semester because she was trying to find her niche and that seemed like a natural place to go.

“It just became a part of who I was,” said Lagana, who finds community service fulfilling. “I don’t see it as

service.”

What else she does: Lagana said she doesn’t have a real hobby, but enjoys running and just hanging

out. She noted what was once her avocation has in a way become her vocation.

What others say: Arlene Francis, interim executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs, said Lagana

has been invaluable in helping to coordinate volunteers for a variety of projects there. Francis said

Lagana is highly organized and has been highly successful in recruiting volunteers for programs “... that

wouldn’t happen without her help.” “Anything that I need to have her coordinate I do,” Francis said.

Rotary International Post-Graduate Opportunities

Ambassadorial Scholarships: Rotary District 7120, covering Rochester and the Finger Lakes region, offers an opportunity to a qualified student to apply for an Ambassadorial Scholarship in even Spring semesters (Spring 2012 will be the next opportunity). Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of US$26,000 for one academic year of study in another country. These awards are intended to help de-fray costs associated with round-trip transportation, tuition and other fees, room and board, and some educational supplies. Our Rotary District supports applications for a year of graduate study commencing in odd the academic years (Fall 2013 for the Spring 2012 applicants). More information and applications can be found at the following website: http://www.rotary.org/en/StudentsAndYouth/EducationalPrograms/AmbassadorialScholarships/Pages/ridefault.aspx If the url does not work, go to Rotary International’s home page at www.Rotary.org <http://www.rotary.org/> and click on Service and Youth, then Educational Programs. Group Study Exchange: Rotary District 7120 offers an opportunity each year for young professionals ages 25 – 40 to become members of a Group Study Exchange team. A different country is cho-sen on an annual basis for GSE team exchanges, one team coming from the Rotary District abroad, our team going to that District. Usually, the team visits six communi-ties in a Rotary District over a thirty-day period. For 2011, Rotary District 7120 has an exchange with a Rotary District in Mexico centered on Veracruz. Our outgoing team will depart May 3, 2011, and return June 3, 2011. Applications will be due No-vember 13, 2010, for selection as team members.
