2008 Alternative Spring Break Sites



• Nearly 120 student and staff participants• 9 program sites throughout the U.S. and

Mexico• Over 3,500 hours of direct service performed

for individuals and communities in need• “The past few days I’ve been telling people

again and again that my week in Eagle Butte was by far the best I’ve had as a Rice student.”

Urban Immersion Program



• Significant expansion to double the number of students participating (up to 48)

• Greater community impact through longer-term projects with host agencies

• Continuation of programming throughout the academic year

2008 Urban Immersion Program



• Provides international service opportunities

• In future years, program will provide international research and leadership development opportunities

• 11 students selected for first class of Fellows

• Program expected to grow significantly over the next 3 years

• 4- to 12-week summer service placements throughout Latin America - Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, and Peru

• This year’s projects focused on community/public health, women’s empowerment, environmental issues, and indigenous health

2008-2009 Loewenstern Fellowships



• America Reads Tutoring Program– Employs over 60 undergraduate students off-campus in community-based

literacy programs

• Good Works Fair– Brings over 40 non-profit and human services employers to campus to

recruit graduating seniors

• International Service Project– 2-week group summer service project serving a community with whom we

have an 8-year relationship

• O-Week Outreach Day– Engages nearly half of the incoming class in a one-day service project each

August

• The NAMES Projects AIDS Memorial Quilt– Biennial display and week of programming highlighting the impact of

HIV/AIDS on our community, the country, and the world

• Community Service & Literacy Resource Library• Community Service Grant

– Nearly $11,000 in funding for student service organizations and community service projects each year

• GIVE-A-HOOT (E-mail Newsletter)– 2,350 subscribers from the campus and Houston communities

receive information bi-weekly on local service opportunities, jobs, internships, and grants

• Database of Local, National, and International Volunteer Opportunities

• Morty Rich Scholarship– Service-based scholarship awarded to continuing undergraduate

students

• Alan Grob Prize– Service-based prize awarded to either graduating or non-graduating

Rice students

• Rice Developing World Student’s Scholarship– Need-based award providing funding for international service in a

developing country

• Hilda and Herschel Rich Family Student Community Service Fund– New funding source designed to support student initiated service

projects, covering a wide range of community-based activities
