s Welcome to the

County of Newell

Weekend Wanderings!

June 22nd-28th, 2012

There is nothing more enjoyable than a well cooked meal. Unfortunately, I (like many

others) allow life to complicate the status quo of being able to prepare home cooked and

satisfying food. Deciding to opt outside the fast food run to satisfy the basic urge of filling my

gullet is often difficult. So too are the choices of where to decide to eat within this county and

its many communities. Upon my arrival in this community, this bulletin caught my eye. I am a

cognisor of flavours and tastes and enjoy sharing my experiences with others. I approached Mr.

Slenders of the County of Newell and writer of the Weekend Wanderings, with the idea of

becoming the first (that I am aware of) food critic for the County of Newell’s many restaurants

and pubs. Mr Slenders has graciously allowed me to offer my experiences on one restaurant per

week. I will be offering my experiences and thoughts on a number of different factors:

Food quality and Taste: 40 points. Without good food, there is nothing to attract. (This also

accounts for the ability to serve allergies and other related personal customizations of food)

Service: 40 points. Without good service, food won’t save your restaurant

Atmosphere: 15 points. If a restaurant is dull and not well maintained, it will reduce the overall

quality of the experience

Location: 5 points. If a restaurant is not located in a good location, is too small, or has no park-

ing, it becomes inconvenient to travel to and detracts from the experience.

This week, I ventured to The Steaming Cup.

What an amazing little restaurant! I was quite surprised at the interior of the place and how

much like Starbucks it felt like, only without the fear of being chastised by my neighbour about

how their expensive coffee is better than anything that I bought.

When I entered the restaurant I was greeted with pleasant soft music, and a fantastic display of

delicious, fresh made pastries and deserts. Trendy art displays covered the wall and were also

available to purchase by the look of the tags next to the display. There was a choice of a lounge

and normal tables to eat, drink, and socialize. A unique appreciation for being environmentally

friendly was also apparent given the bags of ready to be used compost available to be taken by

customers. I did not care to eat by it but I appreciated it nonetheless. This place deserves a top

rating for atmosphere, 15 points!

Continuation Page 3

Upon ordering food, I found that there was quite a limited selection. Given the size of the business, this

is not difficult to see why. I found the food to be excellent! The soups were amazing and the baking was

extraordinary! The food reminds me of the home cooked meals and baking that you would get from

your Grandmother’s house. Outside of the hot food for purchase, a number of different breakfast

items, teas, and special food products could be purchased. The drinks are also quite extraordinary! My

recommendation is the bubble tea if you get a chance. This restaurant, however, did not have much in

the way of salad or vegetables, and while I did not ask, had very little in the way of a gluten free

product line. Despite their awesome selection of soups and goodies (I strongly recommend the pie), the

lack of vegetables and gluten free food means that I have to deduct some points. For lack of

customization and a healthier lunch choice I will give 32 points to The Steaming Cup.

The service at the Steaming Cup is very friendly. The counterperson was very considerate to me. Over

my lunch breaks the past few times at the restaurant this week, I was greeted by a smile, a warm

welcome, and some helpful advice to what food selection I should pick. While not a full service

restaurant, the only thing I found that upset me a little was the size of the return tray. I found that it

was difficult to put more than one try in the return bin at one time (having finished at the same time as

another). While I cannot fault them for this, it did detract from my experience of eating at the

restaurant. I have to say, that this has been some of the friendliest eating experiences in the County I

have had, thus far, since moving here for my job. For this, I award the Steaming Cup 37 points for their

excellent service.

The last point is the location of the business. While I found the business to have an excellent aurora,

atmosphere, and products, I also found it just a little small with very little parking space. Located in the

Brooks downtown, just across from the Oasis Theater, this congested area of town offers little parking.

There is a parking lot not too far from the restaurant, and you can enter from the back, but the alley is a

definite turn off. There are also a few places to park in the front but these are usually filled by the

neighbouring businesses customers. The downtown is a hard place to travel during lunch hour and for

that, The Steaming Cup loses some points. I give 2 out of 5 points for the location of the restaurant.

I like to think that I am overly critical of the points I give out for the reasons I choose to deduct points.

Please don’t take these comments personally, I would just like to help share the amazing success of the

business.

In general, I find The Steaming Cup an amazing restaurant, worthy of one of my favourite restaurants in

Newell thus far. The Steaming Cup finishes with a combined score of 86 points out of 100! I would

strongly recommend a quick lunch at The Steaming Cup for a bowl of soup, desert, or hot or cold drinks!
