JULY 2012 VOL. TWO ISSUE 7

SUMMER DAYS AT NORWOODWell, the last few days of June certainly left a path of destruction here in theMid-Ohio Valley, did nt it? I often wonder why these things happen and neverreally have a good answer. Suppose its fate? Probably not. Could it just be arandom weather event? Most likely, but the aftermath is quite unpleasant.

Our neighborhoods fell dark. Yards were filled with treetops and debris.Storefronts were ripped from their faades. Our lives were literally turnedupside down. In the middle of a heat wave, nobody had air conditioning or

even a fan to dispel the humid, stagnant air. In the face of diversity, we found away to muddle through and we survived. We always do.

I hope this July is peaceful, calm and uneventful from this point forward. Pleaseknow that some of our neighbors are still without power. Offer to help in anyway you can.

Here at Norwood, we have the air conditioning cranked up and will welcomeyou in our cool little corner of the world. Stop by and spend some time with us.We re happy to share our air conditioning with you.

Located in the up-and-coming Norwood neighborhood of Marietta on the corner of Greene Street and Colegate Drive, we areconveniently located within minutes of I-77. Our normal hours of operation are Tuesday - Saturday 10:30-5:30, and Sunday 12-5 .Parking is plentiful and we are handicapped accessible. We can be reached by calling 740-434-5906.

The ambience of the glow of lamplight entices not only themoth to the flame. It also draws the attention of those whoenjoy a serene rendezvous in a dimly lit room.

The earliest type of lamp, the oil lamp, was a simplistic vesswith an absorbent wick. They were mass-produced in the 19thcentury. Lamp makers usually made the metal base andburner and bought the glass from another manufacturer.

During the Victorian era, oil lamps and candelabras coexistedwith early electric lamps. Since that time, oil lamps havebecome a collectible item. They come in all shapes, sizes and

colors. Norwood carries a wide variety of oil lamps for yourcollection. Let us know if you re looking for a specific item

    My Fascination with Fire King

There are many products that hold the attention of

vintage kitchen aficionados today. Wood handledutensils, aluminum kitchen helpers, Pyrex, spiffylittle aprons to match every outfit and holiday, butmy love affair is with Fire King. My greatest loveis their Peach Lustre line. It shimmers and glistenswith even the faintest hint of light. Its peachycolor reminds me of the transition betweensummer and autumn my favorite season. Mycollection grows every time I spot a new piece of its golden glory.

All Fire King Products were made with the lady of the house in mind. Anchor-Hocking producedutilitarian pieces for everyday use, restaurant ware(better known as the well-loved Jadite Collection)

and the elegant Philbe line. Depending on theneed each customer was given a healthy selectionof designs and pieces from which to choose

In production from 1942 to the late 1970s,Anchor-Hocking certainly did make a fine line of dinner and bake ware. It was often sold in bags of flour as a promotional item or given away at thelocal gas station as a free gift with purchase. Thiswas a teaser; enticing the customer to purchasethe rest of the line at grocery and hardware stores.

For Jadite junkies, the challenge of amassing acollection that is identical in color is nearlyimpossible. When it was produced in the 30s,there was little quality control for what was then, inexpensive glassware. So, most cabinets filledwith the pressed-glass dinnerware contain avariety of delicious shades of the apple green. What makes Jadite especially fun for collectorsare the many different items available. Quirkyitems like cigarette boxes, footed bulb bowls,

juice-saver pie plates, door knobs, and waterdispensers make collecting Jadite a real treat.

Each Fire King collector is a bit different in theirpreferences, but there is a single kinship amongthem all. What is it? A love for a well-madepiece that will last forever. Let us know which

Fire King line is your favorite.
