    ANTIQUES NEWSLETTER

    FEBRUARY 2013

    VOL. THREE ISSUE 2

FEBRUARIUSThis February brings us to look forward to winters close. The chill of January has left u

to wonder when sweet spring breezes will once again grace our doorstep. Alas, Mothe

Nature still sleeps in her winter slumber and we are left to bundle up in our warmest

coverings only to bear another days icy grip.

Ever wonder how Februarys name came to be? The root name has both Latin and Romorigins. Originally named Februarius; meaning purification. What a wise observation!

Recently, I stood in a window at the back of our home admiring the recent snowfall. Ivalways been amazed at how clean and perfect the world appears after a fresh snowfall.

is almost as if the snow washes away all of the negative aspects of our world. Its peace

and childlike, clean and pure. I now have to smile at the irony in my perceptionit matcthat of our forefathers thousands of years ago. We really arent that different from them

    are we?

Fast-forward to modern day societythe Finnish call the month of February The Mothof the Pearl. They believe when snow melts on tree branches, it forms droplets, and asthey freeze again, they are like pearls of ice. Another good observation! February remi

us that there is another purpose in life. Just when we feel like our purpose may be wan

we learn that we have the opportunity to be repurposed to perform another day. In a wthis is the life of vintage and antique items. We, at Norwood and Nostalgia take pride in

reviving and repurposing time-honored pieces for you to use, display and appreciate. I

hope you have the time to visit us this month. Wed love to see you. Well keep the fire

stoked and the coffee warm. Happy February!

Three wordsAll That Sparkles. Our Vendor of the Monthis actually a team. Michael Frum and Joe Hornbeck have

partnered to bring a whole new vantage point to the local

antique world. These two have burst onto the scene with a

shimmery punch like none other. Their creations are simply

    stunning!

They certainly know how to employ every element of make-

believe in such a way that were convinced the illusion isreal. I believe part of their success is that they dont fear to

give into the whimsy of life. They see the beauty in

everything and theyre not afraid to prove it to us.

Have you stopped by to see the windows at Nostalgia lately?

If not, you must! If so, arent they smashing? Michael and

Joe have loaned their expertise to dress one window in a

flamboyant Mardi gras style and the other is a pristine

fantasy bedroom for any girly-girl, big or small.

After viewing the windows, step into Nostalgia and youll bedrawn to the upper rooms. Im sure youll be delighted with

how theyve transformed their rooms into a glittery dream

world. Be sure to check out their fanciful loftsimply climb

the purple staircase and step into a serene wonderland thats

sure to make you smile. Michael and Joeyouve done a

    great job!

    Improper storage sometimes leads to

stains, tears, rubs, bent corners, and

other condition issues that can diminish

    the value of your Valentine.

The key to preserving Valentines Cardsis proper handling and storage. The

main culprit that causes paper to

    deteriorate and yellow is acid.

By using archival quality materialsbasically means the materials will not

only protect the cards from wear and

tear damage, but will not harm them by

    emitting chemicals.

Be certain the clear inserts you purchase

are made of PVC-free plastic to avoid

    this concern.

    Cheers for now!

Early Valentines Day cards were hand written expressions of love anddesire, but sadly, over time have made way for mass produced greeting

Early cards were much more elaborate than todays versions and weremade by offset lithograph and die cut. Many were depicted with a lace

background. This detail is quite intentional.

In Medieval times, before Valentines Cards were popular, a lace

handkerchief was given as a token of someones love. In the 1800s,

mechanical Valentines were in vogue. Each had their own special way

coming to life. These are some of the most collectible cards today.

Storing your most prized Valentines appropriately will insure they

stay in good condition. One popular method is to store cards in analbum. This allows one to view their collection without touching th

cards. This helps to keep them clean and deters further damage tha

can happen when they're handled frequently.

Norwood and Nostalgia have vintage Valentines in stock and ready

add to your collection. Stop by soon! Happy collecting!
