    Snow on Easter Sunday

Blasphemy, I know! My children cringe every time I mention that weve had snow fall on Easter Sunday. When I think of this, I recall a church bulletin from my childhood. Its cover pictured a hillside filled with freshly bloomed daffodils under a blanket of new fallen snow. It was quite a beautiful scene. Now, Ill admit, snow on Easter Sunday is a rarity. After checking historical data it only happens once every 15-20 years, but it does happen. Snow on Easter is kind of like certain antiquesrare, yet beautiful in the eye of the beholder. Have you ever searched for something specific like the Knickerbocker Sleepy Head doll you loved as a child? Or maybe its the paste cross your grandmother wore. You know, its the one that had a clear stone in the center and if it was held up to the light you could read the entire Lords Prayer through that stone. Or the silly little monkey salt and pepper shakers that sat in the china cabinet for decades. For us, these are the beautiful things that have become rare and elusive just like snow on Easter Sunday. Are you looking for something you havent seen in years, or perhaps, decades? We might have it at Norwood! You never knowwe may just have the very thing that will bring back all of those precious memories. Stop by and see us soon!

  • Provenance is a French word that refers to an antique's history or the chronology of who has owned it. It can also take into consideration the three Wswhat, when and where. In laymans terms, provenance is the roadmap to an antiques entire historical existence. At local auctions and estate sales its often advertised that the sale will offer the possessions of a local prominent figure. Part of our job as the buyer is to gather the provenance of the item in question before we make our purchase to ensure its correct value. Ultimately, legitimate proof of provenance can add value to the item. For instance, my collection includes a hand saw that was made by the Disston Saw Company in approximately 1845. This saw could have been used by our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, since he indeed lived during that time. However, I seriously doubt Mr. Lincoln ever so much as glanced as the tool. Could I prove the provenance of my saw? Of course not, so my greatest claim to fame is only that of the age of the saw, which can be proven by the Medallion embedded in the saws handle. Since Mr. Lincoln didnt own my saw, use it, or award it to someone, its value is significantly less than if he had. Ive noticed items for sale items as a piece of local history. For collectors, this is a big draw and the seller will often reap a higher profit because of it. This is where our quest for provenance begins. As long as the seller has creditable provenance, such as legal documentation or a Certificate of Authenticity (from a reputable entity) the item will most likely be authentic. [A note of warning a letter from grandma saying she has owned the item for a certain number of years does not prove provenance.] If provenance is not proven then the item may simply be an old flag, quilt, weapon, etc. and the value is drastically reduced. At Norwood, we attempt to provide the most authentic items as possible. If we are lucky enough to have a piece of local history for sale, we will be sure to have proper documentation.

Whether youve purchased your vintage clothing from Norwood or your local thrift shop, we know youll want to keep them all in tip top shape. A good rule of thumb is to hand wash your vintage clothing items. Wash only one item at a time. Do not use a washing machine or dryer unless the item was made during the 1960s or later this is when fabrics became more machine wash friendly. Spot cleaning is also a viable alternative to cleaning the entire garment. Finally, if your item is made of white or creamy colored wool, do NOT hang it in direct sunlight! The sun will yellow the fabric. And, that would be simply awful! Cheers for now!

    Caring for Vintage Fashion

  • The right time is now to begin a collection and believe it or not, there are affordable items out there. Collecting need not be an expensive venture. Here are a few suggestions to whet your appetite! Miniature Busts of Musical Composers - Mass-produced by a handful of outfits during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, these little statuettes served as popular gifts from piano teacher to student. These can be snatched up for as a low as $3 a piece. Brass ID Tags - Prior to the advent of electronic key cards and bar codes, elegant metal medallions labeled keys and their corresponding hotel rooms or lockers, and also tracked inventory and tools at large businesses. These can be found for $1 apiece for small specimens and $3 a piece for larger ones. Bottle Openers - The combo bottle-and-can opener debuted shortly after Prohibitionwhen brewers first started marketing canned beerand remained prevalent until the pull tab's release in 1962. Often given away with the purchase of a six-pack, the simple tools are in plentiful supply today. Snap them up for as little as $1 each. Collecting can be easy on the wallet if we choose to let it be. At Norwood, we have all of these affordable items and more. Let us help you begin your new collection.

    Hipsters

Hipsters know the latest and greatest trends in fashion. Its all about vintage clothing how to wear it, how to mix it with todays garments and how to make it all look fabulous. Fashion design, throughout history has always turned to previous eras for inspiration. Vintage clothing retains and increases in value due to the fact that it is genuinely from a past era. In addition, authentic garments were made one at a time, with enough attention to detail to create an item that has long lasting value. Although there has always been an appreciation for the superior quality, fabric and design that is found in vintage clothing - the awareness, demand and acceptance of this has increased dramatically since the early 1990s. All we need to do is walk through any college campus on Monday morning. The proof of what is returning in style will be on display for all to see. Todays youth has an innate appreciation for the superior quality fabric and design that is found in vintage clothing. With this awareness, theyve created a demand for the acceptance of environmental sustainability that includes yes, clothing, shoes and accessories! I believe we could all learn valuable lessons from the Hipstersdont be afraid to stand out in a crowd, be adventurous and appreciate that which has come before you. Norwood carries a large inventory of vintage fashion, shoes, jewelry and accessoriesstop by often to see our ever-changing lines.

Norwoods Antique Tip of the Month

When purchasing an antique or vintage item, look for the odd man out. Odd pieces

that are out of their element will usually bring the best bargain price.

    ***************************************************************************************

Look for ceramics in a jewelers shop or bronze in a silver dealers booth. The dealer

will most likely discount the odd item to move it on.
