OUR NEW NORWOOD GREETER

Most of you have been to Norwood in recent times, but have you met our new Norwood greeter? If so, you know that she’s a genuine sweetheart who is always happy to see you. She knows no stranger and will always make you smile when you catch sight of her.

All historic and prestigious establishments have their best employees at the door to welcome their patrons and guests. They know how very important it is to make a good first impression. We do too and we believe that we’ve joined the ranks of those five star hotels and restaurants with our newest addition. She’s a stylish little lady who always wears her best at the shop.

The next time you visit us, I’m sure you’ll have the honor of meeting little Miss Sable. She will make you feel right at home. Stop by soon! We’ll be looking for you!

Marietta is brimming with the evidence that Mother Nature is at it again. Our lawns need tending, our flowerbeds could use a bit of sprucing up, and our sidewalks need to be swept. This is a time for renewal, revival and the promise that better days are ahead. Old Man Winter has made his final stance and we’ll all be glad to see him turn to little more than a misty memory. As the springtide brings relief from winter doldrums, we are preparing for your next visit to Norwood. We’ve noticed that spring is here and have been preening our exterior grounds to make your visit a comfortable one. We’ve added some nice little vignettes outside and have made many outdoor improvements in the past year. Now we’re waiting to bask in the glorious sunshine. We’re hoping for warm breezes, lovely flower gardens, and the return of our feathered friends that quietly go about their business of building a new home for their soon-to-be-hatched babies. Springtime is a friendly reminder that beauty lies just around the bend. Color bursts forth as far as the eye can see. Warm breezes carry the sweet scents that only Spring’s emergence can give us. And, finally, all I can is this… Hooray for spring!

This month I have a couple of furniture

repair tips for you.

We all have our favorite pieces of wood furniture that occasionally need a bit of

sprucing up.

Ever had a water ring on your favorite

table? Apply mayonnaise liberally over the

water ring and leave overnight, then wipe off with a soft dry cloth the next day.

Voila! The water ring will be banished.

Scratches on a piece of wood furniture can be the bane of your existence. Crayola to

the rescue! Select the right color and melt

a small amount. Work the melted wax into the scratch or nick until concealed.

Cheers for now!

Wade Whimsies are miniature animals and nursery rhyme figures made of porcelain. They were given away as premiums in Red Rose Tea starting in the 1970s. If you bought a box of Red Rose Tea, there was a Wade porcelain figurine inside. Depending on the promotion it could be either an animal known as whimsies or a small nursery rhyme figure. In England, Wade had been making these figurines for years and selling them in their retail line.

There were a total of 24 nursery rhyme figures and 67 whimsies from the 1970s. In those original promotions there always seems to be a few of the Wade figurines that are more difficult to find. Some are obvious… the gingerbread man and the butterfly were thin and easily broken. The Three Bears and the large poodle are hard to find and commanded a higher price.

Wades’ retail line is much more extensive than the figurines given away by Red Rose Tea. The best pieces are in perfect condition with no chips or glaze cracks and with sharp mold lines. As the molds were reused many times some figures do not have sharp definition and should be avoided.

Norwood has a nice supply of Wade figures in stock and ready to add to your collection. Stop by soon! Happy collecting!

COLLECTING WADE WHIMSIES

DONAGHHO POTTERY

In 1870 stoneware maker Alexander Polk Donaghho made the decision to relocate to Parkersburg, WV from Fredericktown, PA. That was quite a distance to travel in those days, but I can offer an educated guess as to why he made such a trek. It was the clay…rich, strong and abundant.

Pottery Junction held some of the richest deposits of clay which is the primary ingredient in making pottery and stoneware. For this very reason, Donaghho built his kiln at the location of what is now the intersection of Murdoch and Emerson Avenues, just below Terrapin Park.

His early pieces were highly decorated and are often the most valuable pieces in today’s market.

As with all good things, the Donaghho factory closed its doors around 1903-04. Despite the century that’s passed since that time, Donaghho pottery is still very much in demand.

An educated collector should beware of copies though. The easiest indicator of a fake is the spelling of the name. Many misspellings appear as “Donoggho”.

Enjoy and appreciate!
