April showers bring May flowers! That’s what I learned anyway, but it seems the weather is always wonderful here. I can’t tell you what a joy it has been watching this youth ministry program grow over the last couple months. The Lock-In last month was a HUGE success. Several youth showed up for games, snacks, and overnight activities in the church. Every Sunday in April also included a weekly youth group, meeting after church for an hour. As I am writing this it is still going on, but I can tell you we have had a blast so far! Here are some pictures so you can see what we have been up to. Youth group is only for the month of April for now, so I am glad so many are taking advantage of the events this month. On the first Sunday in May, we are having a Homemade Ice Cream Celebration for middle-high school youth and families to celebrate the end of April’s youth group meetings. Yum! Youth ministry has been non-stop lately and I couldn’t be happier. All youth deserve the experience to be encouraged and challenged in their spiritual walk with Christ. I look forward to more activities this summer, and seeing where God will lead NUMC. Please continue to pray for our youth, and the program’s leaders, together we can accomplish great things. If you feel called to volunteer, please reach out to me, we would love to have you! Jason Obermeier, Director of Youth Ministries [email protected]

Nan McCurdy and Miguel Mairena, Global Ministries missionaries

Their new assignment will be with a Methodist organization Give Ye Them to Eat in Puebla Mexico. Nan and Miguel try to share God’s love so that everyone they meet hears the message: You are

God’s Beloved. They attempt to follow in

Christ’s example contributing to the building

of God’s “Kin-dom” among us. They served

the last three and a half years as the

Western Jurisdiction Mission Advocates

encouraging churches to form Covenant

relationships with missionaries. They lived

in the Cal-Pac Conference serving on

Conference task forces like Disaster

Response and Immigration as they brought

the missionary perspective. In 2015 and

2016 they taught the Latin America Study for United Methodist Women. In 2017 they taught “Let

the whole World say Amen!” at the Lay Servant Ministries Academy.

As missionaries in Nicaragua for thirty years they worked to develop programs with youth and

women for Education, women’s health, economic empowerment, prevention of violence,

promotion of gender equity, and a youth-run community radio station. They worked with dozens of

Volunteer in Mission teams, and educated about topics like migration from Central America, the

Eternal (External) Debt and Free vs Fair Trade.

Nan and first husband, missionary Philip Mitchell, worked in pastoral accompaniment in Nicaragua

with families that lost loved ones in the US-war in the 1980s. Phil died suddenly after a simple

operation in 1991; their children Daniel and Nora were ages one and three. Three years later Nan

and Miguel fell in love working with Volunteer in Mission teams through an ecumenical center

where they worked; they married in 1995.

Nan served as Peace with Justice Educator for the Baltimore-Washington Conference (1996 -1997).

On return to Nicaragua in 1997 they supported the founding of the Women and Community

Association in San Francisco Libre and San Juan de Limay. Nan and Miguel worked with this

organization until August 2014.

Miguel, the eighth of eleven children was raised on one of the 36 Solentiname Islands in

Nicaragua’s great lake. He was not able to begin primary school until age twenty, but then studied

all his life – becoming a lawyer and receiving a Master in Criminal Law at age fifty-six. He also

studied at Wesley Seminary. Before his assignment with Women and Community, his work in

Nicaragua included development and theology promotion with churches and ecumenical agencies.

He loves to encourage people to go back to school at any age. Contact them directly: E-mail:

Traveling Angels

One of the groups of angels that serve our senior population is Traveling Angels - along with Food

Angels, Visiting Angels, Primetimers, and Caring Ministries. We need help at this time with our

Traveling Angels.

NUMC “Traveling Angels” are willing to provide rides to those in the congregation who are not able

to drive themselves. The “Traveling Angels” transports the person to worship services, church

activities, medical appointments, etc.

If you are able and willing to be added to the list of “angels” that assist with the help to provide

rides, please call Nancy Leverage at (818) 267-6556 or the church office at (818) 886-1555 to let us

know on what days you can volunteer.

Reminder

If you have books that you are ready to give away please take them to the $10 or Less Book Store.

It is located at Nordhoff and Tampa behind Chi Chi's in the south end of the strip mall near Big Lots.

Just tell them to credit the account for Northridge United Methodist Church. We have a credit there

that we can use when we want to get books for the North Valley Caring Services.

Save the Date

The Primetimers will be going to the Glendale Center Theater on August 25.

Contact the office for more info.

Willem Dafoe earned Best Supporting Actor nominations at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and BAFTA Awards, and Brooklyn Prince won a Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Actor/Actress. All Church Hike Las Virgenes Canyon, Calabasas Saturday, May 5, 2018 (8:30 am – 12:00 pm)

Enjoy an easy, 4-mile loop hike in Las Virgenes Canyon. This hike features valley and live oaks, sycamores, and scenic green hills (if the green can hold out just a couple weeks). This trail is mostly level, with a slight, gradual elevation gain followed by a long, easy downhill stroll back to the trailhead. We will follow a rarely used trail tucked between the two main trails of the Former Ahmanson Ranch and Las Virgenes Canyon, while avoiding the climbs to the mesa or ridge trails. Dogs on leash are welcome. Hat, water, and sunscreen are a must. Meet at the church parking lot to carpool. Trailhead is located at the north end of Las Virgenes Canyon Rd. (From 101 West, take Las Virgenes exit and turn right; continue to the end of the road and park on the street.)
