PRELUDE—Trumpet Voluntary William Boyce

* CALL TO WORSHIP Penny and Evan Willey

One: The stone is rolled away All: Christ is Risen! One: The shroud is removed All: Christ is Risen! One: The tomb is empty All: Christ is Risen! One: Tell the good news All: Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen Indeed!

* CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP—Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Lloyd Larson

(Beethoven: Ode to Joy)

Alleluia! Alleluia! Hearts to heav’n and voices raise. Sing to God a hymn of gladness, sing to God a hymn of praise. He who on the cross as Savior for the world’s salvation bled. Jesus Christ, the king of glory, now is risen from the dead.

Now the iron bars are broken, Christ from death to life is born; Glorious life, and life immortal on this resurrection morn. Christ has triumphed, and we conquer by his mighty enterprise; We with him to life eternal by his resurrection rise.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Glory be to God on high. Alleluia to the Savior who has won the victory. Alleluia to the Spirit, Fount of love and sanctity. Alleluia! Alleluia to the Triune Majesty!

PRAYER OF RECONCILIATION One: O God, early in the morning, when the world was young, you made life in all its beauty and terror, you gave birth to all we know. All: Hallowed be your name. One: Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a newborn child crying in a cradle announced that you had come among us, that you were one of us. All: Hallowed be your name. One: Early in the morning, surrounded by self-interested religious leaders, anxious statesmen and silent friends, you accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God; you shouldered and suffered the cross.

All: Hallowed be your name. One: Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that you had risen, that you have come back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied, and destroyed you. All: O God, bring new life where we are worn and tired, new love where we have turned hard-hearted, forgiveness where we have wounded, and the joy and freedom of your Holy Spirit where we are prisoners of ourselves.

—Silent prayer—

One: To all and to each, where regret is real, God pronounces pardon and grants us the right to begin again. Thanks be to God!

* THE PEACE As we are reconciled to God and to one another, share a sign of Christ’s peace and love with your neighbor.

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—A Brief Statement of Faith (Presbyterian Church, USA) In life and in death we belong to God.

Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, We trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. Amen.

NOW’S THE TIME TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP AT

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

You’ve heard that the General Assembly is coming to Detroit June 14—21. This biennial meeting brings together commissioners and advisory delegates from the 172 presbyteries as well as observers from around the world. The Committee of Local Arrangements (COLA) for the Presbytery of Detroit is seeking over 2,000 volunteers to assure the smooth operation of the General Assembly as well as to extend the Ministry of Hospitality to our many guests.

Hopefully, you’ve thought about how you might participate. Now is the time to act. Go to www.presbyteryofdetroit.org/COLA and click on the “Volunteer at GA” button to view a complete list of volunteer opportunities and complete the easy-to-use sign up procedure.

Most shifts are 4 hours, and opportunities are available 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

You may sign up for multiple jobs or shifts or just one.

There are over 2,000 spots that need to be filled. Choose a job (or several!) that look right for you.

Remember, as a volunteer, you may attend GA any time throughout the week with your Volunteer Badge! Sign up today! For more information, please contact Kathy Bauhof at [email protected].

Oh, the times, they are a-changing, and one of the most rapidly changing aspects of our society these days is how marriage is defined. With 17 states having already approved gay marriage, Michigan and others on the way to joining them, it probably won’t be long before you or someone you love will be headed down the aisle into a same-sex marriage. This issue has been a contentious one for our society and our denomination, the PC(USA). The question will be hotly debated on the floor of this year’s General Assembly in June, right here in Detroit. To help all of us come to terms with what we believe and to understand more clearly what our faith teaches, I invite you to join me for a scripture-guided discussion on Sundays at 11:30 in the Library. Our first discussion will be held on May 18th and run approximately 6 weeks. After worship, grab your coffee and come prepared to prayerfully discuss and humbly explore this important topic. Discussion Leader: Rev. Marjorie Wilhelmi. Your RSVP to the church office would be appreciated.
