Finding the wedding dress of your dreams

is an exciting, yet daunting task. It’s the most

important dress you’ll ever wear and has

to make you look and feel beautiful. Even if

you’re normally decisive, choosing a bridal

gown can leave you confused by what flatters

you best. There’s so much to consider:

the fabric, silhouette, neckline, length,

embellishments and how easily you can move

on the dance-floor!

If you’re not sure where to start, a good idea

to begin with is opening your mind to trying on

silhouettes and styles you wouldn’t normally

consider. If you’ve always imagined you’d

wear a full-skirted gown, don’t rule out trying

on a more tailored, fitted style - you might be

pleasantly surprised.

Remember to wear wedding-worthy

underwear and to bring your wedding shoes,

so that you can see exactly how the dress

fits. Think about the time of year you plan to

get married and imagine yourself wearing the

gown throughout the day.

Ask someone to come with you, perhaps your

mum, relative or a trusted friend, but avoid

bringing a crowd; too many opinions can

be unhelpful. When you’re trying on gowns,

don’t be rushed into making a decision and

most importantly, relax and enjoy yourself.

When you find ‘The One’ you’ll know - and

with these stunning dresses from Amaryllis

Bridalwear, it might just be love at first sight.

Picture-perfect hair and make-up for your special day...

the look of love

skincareFor flawless skin, before you even reach for the make-up,

think about what you’re eating and drinking. Taking the simple

step of drinking more water in the run up to your wedding

day, is the key to clear skin. Cutting back on refined sugar,

alcohol and stimulants such as coffee, and eating a healthy

diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables, will ensure your skin

glows and your eyes sparkle on your big day.

‘As well as drinking plenty of water, it’s a good idea to

exfoliate at least twice a week, particularly through the winter

months,’ says Antonia Krieger, Proprietor of Elle Au Naturel -

professional hair and make-up artists. ‘Moisturising properly is

important too, including the eye area and I would recommend

investing in a good serum.’

If you like the idea of having a facial in the run up to

your wedding, find a good therapist who does hydrating

(depending on skin type) facials, but make sure these are

done well in advance, as some can cause breakouts.

‘Also think about getting your brows into a good shape,’ says

Antonia. ‘They need to be freshly waxed or threaded so the

eye-shadow sits on the skin rather than hair.’

the look of love

28

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

29

make-upA common misconception about bridal make-up is

that you must wear more of everything. But, if your

make-up artist is skilled and has good products

to hand, you don’t necessarily need to apply any

more make-up than usual.

‘I would never tell a client that they need heavier

make-up for a wedding,’ says Antonia. ‘Some

clients need very little foundation as their skin

doesn’t require it and others do need more. It’s all

about the individual.’

With bridal make-up, it’s more about definition.

Defining the eyes and brows is paramount for the

best possible photographs, as this is all you will

see in a black and white picture, but again this

doesn’t mean you need to be heavy-handed.

‘The right colours on an eye should make

them light and bright and pop out in a photo,’

says Antonia.

Blusher can be tricky, as, if you only want to wear

a hint of blusher, you can sometimes look a little

washed out in the photographs. The best thing to

do is to ask your make-up artist to look at the style

of photography you’ve chosen, particularly at the

photographer’s use of light, and then advise you

on how much blusher – and lip colour – to wear.

Because you’ll be celebrating well into the night,

it’s important to have make-up that will last. You

don’t want it to disappear after an hour, or to have

to keep re-applying. Often make up will last better

if it is well applied by a professional make-up artist,

who has quality products and tricks up their sleeve.

‘Personally I make sure I use a good moisturiser

that works well under make-up,’ says Antonia.

‘Then a primer and also an eye primer as well, to

hold the eye shadow and stop any creasing, and

finally I help advise on what touch up products

they should purchase for the day.’

For Indian weddings, make sure your make-up is

distinct for each part of the celebrations. Contrast a

natural look and pastel shades at a civil ceremony

with bright colours at your Sangeet and Garba

nights. This will ensure that the chronology of your

wedding is clear in photos and you’ll get to show

off three gorgeous looks!

To accentuate eyes, define with liner, smudged is fine, but it doesn’t always have to be strong. Use eye shadow, even if it’s really light, to put some socket shape in, then highlight the brow bone and lid as that will brighten the eye and make them stand out in the pictures.

the look of love

hairWhilst making sure your skin is looking great, keep

your hair in top condition too by getting it trimmed

every 6 - 8 weeks. Try using a deep conditioner

at home, once a week, for ultimately soft and

nourished locks.

As you flick through magazines considering

your bridal hair, think about the neckline of your

dress, what the weather will be like and how your

hairstyle will look in the photographs. A current

trend for hair is for styles to be a lot less formal;

knotted chignons, braids and twists, where the hair

is softly pinned up and not too structured. This can

look beautiful, but be mindful of the photos.

‘If the shot is back lit and there are stray hairs

that haven’t been sprayed, it can look messy,’

explains Antonia. ‘ Up do’s do tend to hold better

as they can be sprayed well, but if the bride is

relaxed and having a relaxed wedding, down

hairstyles are lovely.’

If you wish to curl your hair and wear it down,

invest in a good heated roller set, with tonging or

the use of a hot rod over the top, to help the curl

hold better into the evening. If your wedding is in

the winter months when there is likely to be wind

and rain, then it might be advisable to consider an

up do. The same applies to a humid day – long

hair in curls will often drop and look untidy.

Whether you covet dimante glitter or pretty

petals, why not add a little extra something to

your hairdo? A tiara or tikka will make you feel

like a princess while fresh flowers are naturally

beautiful. Ask your florist to create bespoke,

fresh hair corsages that match your bouquets

for you and your best girls, but make sure you

discuss which flowers sit best in the hair and

which will last longest without water.

30

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

31

book a trialIt’s really important to book a trial hair and

make-up appointment, so that you’re not

stressed on the day. Take along your veil,

tiara and any other accessories you intend

to wear, so that you can perfect your look.

Communication is key. Talk to your hair and

make-up artist about your ideas, bringing with

you a scrapbook of pictures you like, to help

the professionals fulfill your dreams.

‘Try and choose imagery of people who have

similar colouring to yourself, especially when

it comes to make up,’ advises Antonia. ‘But

be aware that a lot of make up pictures are

heavily touched up. Brides are real women

and are supposed to look real, not like air-

brushed models.’

Indian brides should make sure they

take along their dupatta and tikka to their

consultation. The shape of your face, hairline

and colouring will affect the overall look, as

well as the make-up palette you choose. Also

you will get a feel for how comfortable your

outfit is. Many brides are surprised at how

heavy their gorgeous dupattas can be and

you will be able to make amendments if you

find you’re getting a stiff neck.

A good idea is to have your hair and make-up

trial before you have your pre-wedding shoot

with your photographer - that way you can see

what your hair and make-up looks like in your

professional photos.

Keep oil-free compact powder or blotting

paper, concealer and your lipstick or gloss

in your handbag, or in your maid-of-honour’s

bag, for touch-ups to keep you picture perfect

for the entire day.

and colours...

beautiful blooms

beautiful blooms

Whether you’re planning a dreamy and romantic

wedding or a bright, bold celebration, the flowers

you choose help set the tone for your big day. So,

before visiting the florist, it’s a good idea to think

about the atmosphere you wish to create. Perhaps

pick up a couple of wedding flowers magazines, use

Pinterest to put together a mood-board of flowers

that catch your eye, or note down the names of

flowers that you love and that match your colour

scheme or theme. To start you off on your floral

journey, we offer some floral inspiration and talk to

the experts for their top tips.

Colour is all-important for creating and setting

the mood. Blue is a very popular choice for

wedding colour schemes, conveying calm waters

and clear skies. Soft, blue hydrangea, dainty

nigella and cornflowers are all stunning choices

to incorporate into your flower selection. Think

about a complementary colour – blue flowers

look particularly beautiful if accented with a white bloom.

Classic white roses or calla lilies break up the blue, like surf

on a wave, for a gorgeous display.

At both Northbrook Park and Froyle Park, hues of blue

perfectly coordinate with the regal peacocks that stroll

throughout the grounds.

If pink is your colour, big bouquets of pretty roses are a

classic choice. Then, a single pink rose buttonhole simply,

yet effectively, links the bridal party. If you want something

a little different, consider pink ranunculi, tulips or pretty

sweet peas.

Pink flowers also work perfectly as part of a vintage or

country garden theme. Choose soft pinks and team them

with greens and creams. These colours work really well for

hair circlets or wrist corsages for your bridesmaids and flower

girls too.

For a summery theme, why not go bold with sunflowers?

Dot daisies between these big blooms for a striking contrast

of size, texture and colour. Yellow freesias are a delicate

alternative to incorporate yellow into your bouquets and

buttonholes, as are daffodils or pretty little narcissi.

Yellow is a bright, bold choice. Flowers in this colour look

lovely with deep reds and oranges, but why not think about a

lime green or hot pink accent as a funky option?

Whatever flowers you choose, they won’t last much longer

than the day itself, but if you choose flowers with a stronger

scent, every time you smell that fragrance again, you’ll be

whisked right back to the magical ‘I dos’ and first dance.

Some pretty flowers with a gorgeous perfume are frangipani,

sweet peas, lavender and jasmine.

All flowers are beautiful, but, if you feel baffled by all the floral

choices, there are some dependable flowers that make great

traditional wedding choices. Roses, orchids, peonies and

hydrangea all make for wonderful bouquets and displays, but

a trusted florist will certainly be able to offer advice if you’re

confused by all the options.

sharing your newsEngagement photos not only provide you

with a set of beautiful pictures to celebrate

your news and share with friends and

family, but they help you to feel at ease

in front of the camera. This will result in a

picture-perfect wedding day, as you feel

comfortable and confident.

the oneChoosing the right photographer for

you is essential, and arguably the most

important decision for your day. It’s their

job to preserve memories for you and

your loved ones.

Start by selecting the style you want,

from the traditional to the more creative

and increasingly popular reportage

shots. Booking your photographer is not

something to rush into – do your research

and find ‘the one’.

Spend time reviewing their portfolios and

make sure that you meet up too – it is

important to feel comfortable with them.

Referrals and testimonials can help to

confirm your decision, along with seeing if

they have any awards or press coverage.

Know your price limit upfront and make

sure that you agree exactly what’s included

within your package.

Choosing the right photographer for you is essential, and arguably the most important decision for your day. It’s their job to preserve memories for you and your loved ones.

first lookAn increasingly popular trend, modern couples are

opting to set up a first look photo opportunity ahead

of the ceremony and away from the wedding party.

The first time you lock eyes with your loved one is a

tender and intimate experience, which can be best

captured in private with these photographs.

practice makes perfectYou want your hair and make-up to be perfect, achieving a

flawless look throughout the day for all your photographs, so

make sure that you have a trial first and that you are completely

happy with the results. It can prove very useful to take a camera

along to your trial too, as some foundations are highly reflective

and can appear white on film.

Your make-up should last all day, so put it to the test ahead of

your wedding; you don’t want to find out on the day that is has

faded and you have not looked your bridal best on camera.

Ensure that your make-up is waterproof too, and that you take

some along for touch-ups on the day.

calm and collectedAlways allow for last minute emergencies and start the day at

least one hour ahead of schedule: if you run over, you won’t be

stressed and your photos can start on time. If you finish earlier,

well that just means more photos of a happy bride and groom!

who, what, where and when? One of the most useful things you can do to help both the

photographer and yourself is to create a timeline of the day.

Decide when and where the photos will take place, allowing

plenty of time in the schedule. Obviously things can change

on the day but it is useful to have an advance running order to

keep things organised. A less-stressed bride is a happy bride…

…and a happy bride makes for great photos!

picture perfect

location, location, locationWhen choosing your wedding venue, think about

the locations of where your wedding photography

could take place. Consider both in and outdoor

options, as you can’t always rely on the weather!

Take into account lighting and ensure that your

photographer visits the venue ahead of the big day.

Could props complement the setting? From wellies

in a field to a bespoke ‘just married’ wooden

plaque, props are a great way to add personality

and create some really unique photos.

a number of captivating styles available; from a creative

your day of dreams

…leave it to thetoastmaster

your day of dreams

The toastmaster, or master of ceremonies, takes

on numerous roles and responsibilities during your

celebration, but their overall duty is to ensure your day

is eff ortlessly wonderful. From the initial planning to the

wedding itself, the toastmaster ensures every stage of

your wedding runs smoothly, allowing you and your guests

to relax.

Northbrook Park and Froyle Park wedding couples often

choose the services of experienced toastmaster; Iain

Pompei. Familiar with both venues, Iain pays meticulous

attention to detail while maintaining an unobtrusive

presence, so that you can enjoy a perfect wedding day.

‘Many couples don’t realise toastmasters still exist,’ says

Iain. ‘They rely on dads, brothers and ushers to help, all of

whom can be fabulous, but a toastmaster can take care

of everything while family members and friends relax and

enjoy the celebration.’

From liaising with suppliers to meeting the bride and

groom on arrival with a glass of champagne, Iain co-

ordinates the day, gently taking charge of all the details,

right from the word go.

As you plan every intricate detail of your wedding, have you considered a toastmaster to help your day run seamlessly?

54

weddings in the south magazine // surrey & hampshire

55

A ‘people-person’ with years of

experience of running events, Iain’s

day as toastmaster begins before the

arrival of the bridal party and guests. He

liaises with the events team and caterers

and checks the venue, making sure

everything is in place for the big day.

‘After confirming that all the flowers are in

place and that the decorations are up, I

check that the ceremony music is ready to

play,’ he says. ‘Or liaise with the musicians

and help them to prepare.’

In the reception room, Iain takes care of all

the little details from hiding the presents

for the groom’s speech to making sure

the guest book is available…and that the

pen works! He also assists the ushers with

the seating plan, relaxing the readers and

calming the nervous groom.

‘When the ceremony is complete, I greet

the newly married couple with a glass of

champagne and escort them to the drinks

reception,’ he explains. ‘As the guests

follow, I begin to collect cards and gifts so

everyone can relax and enjoy the occasion.’

Liaising with the catering manager and

staff, canapés and champagne are served

to guests while Iain informs them of the

itinerary and table plan. He keeps an eye

on the clock, liaising with the photographer

and videographer.

‘After calling the guests to the receiving

line (if requested) and once they are

seated, the top table is announced and

led to their places. I then prepare for the

grand entrance of the bride and groom,

“Please be upstanding for the most

important couple of the day... the BRIDE

& GROOM”,’ he says. ‘The couple is led

through the tables to their seats, always

to rapturous applause!’

Iain goes on to circulate the guest

book, start the music and help prepare

entertainment, as well as chatting with the

guests, acting on behalf of the hosts. When

it’s time for the speeches, he introduces

each speaker and stays close by - with

tissues in hand just in case of tears!

‘Once the cake is cut, the ladies love the

throwing of the bouquet,’ he says. ‘I help

organise this, which is a lot of fun and helps

the guests get into the party mood.’

His role as toastmaster almost complete,

Iain gathers all the guests around the

dance floor and introduces the first dance.

‘Being the toastmaster is an absolute

honour,’ Iain says. ‘I love to help create

exceptional memories and make sure a

couple’s big day is really special.’

Your wedding is one of the most important days in your life. If you want to relax and enjoy every second… leave it to the toastmaster.

Dearest Iain,We cannot thank you enough for being so much more than the best toastmaster we have met. We couldn’t have wished for a more fun, energetic and on point individual, to organise and “gee-up” our guests. As a rule of thumb you should cater for half a bottle of

It's important that you and your partner enjoy the wines on the day so it's really worth trying before you buy.

family, all in the same place at the same time, is a once-in-

needs to be amazing. When you think about all your guests’

For mouthwatering food that your guests will swoon over,

food can be informal and relaxed, but still incredibly delicious.

Fall for the charms of a Caribbean or Asian menu, with

anna & chrisan elegant weddingPhotographs by Graham Nixon Photography

How did you meet?

We first met in June 2007, at work. We

sat next to each other and were friends

at first, but then became a couple and

were together for four years before we

got engaged.

How did he propose?

Chris surprised me with a weekend in

Paris, but I don’t think the proposal went

quite as he planned! The Friday before

we went we’d been out and had a few

too many glasses of wine, so on the

Saturday night when we were supposed

to be at this lovely restaurant in Paris,

where he’s since told me he wanted to

propose, we were in the hotel feeling a

bit worse for wear. Finally, at the end of

our weekend, he proposed. He wanted

to be in front of the Eiffel Tower in a quiet

spot, but we ended up on Trocadero with

hundreds of people all around us, staring

and clapping! He got down on one knee

and my first words were ‘Get up!’ and

then of course I said ‘Yes.’

Why did you choose Northbrook Park for your wedding venue?

A friend at work recommended it and

when I looked at it online, I fell in love. I

knew Chris wanted to get married in an

old country manor house, so Northbrook

was perfect. The grounds are beautiful

and the room that you get married in was

really pretty.

What did you choose for your entertainment?

A brilliant harpist, called Hayley Wild

played as the guests arrived and when I

walked up the aisle. We then had a DJ for

the evening dancing.

How about the food?

We used a company called Moodies

Catering and chose melon and parma

ham for the starter and a roast rib of beef

with accompaniments for main course.

We had a rib of beef for every table and

provided a chef’s hat, apron and carving

knife, so someone on each table could

carve and serve.

Were there any special touches or surprises on the day?

We had a quirky seating plan where we

had photos of each guest hanging from

ribbons in the area between the Vine

Room and Orangery. Guests had to find

their photo and, on the back, we’d written

where they were sitting.

What was the highlight?

The speeches were great, full of funny

jokes and I just loved having all my

friends and family in the same place at

the same time.

Where did you go for honeymoon?

We went to Mauritius for two weeks

and had an amazing time having spa

treatments, doing water sports and

swimming with dolphins.

What’s your advice for couples planning their own wedding?

Making an effort to involve the guests is

really worth it, such as how we organised

the chef’s hat and aprons for each table.

Everyone appreciated it.

nikki & davea winter wonderland weddingPhotographs by Ella & Laurence Photography

How did you meet?

We met at a friend’s wedding in France

in 2011. I was a bridesmaid and Dave

worked with the groom. Everyone was

trying to set us up and at first I wasn’t

interested, but when I saw him I thought

he was really good looking! At the

wedding I felt really shy and whenever

we spoke everyone looked at us! It was

when we got home and went for a drink

that we got together.

How did he propose?

He proposed to me on the 8th December

2013. It was a normal Sunday and our

washing machine had broken so we’d

taken all our clothes to our mums’

houses. Dave wanted to go for a walk

to this beautiful spot in the countryside

where I used to go riding. When we

were up there he proposed which took

me completely by surprise! I said yes

and when we collected our washing, we

celebrated with our mums!

How did you select your dream venue?

Northbrook Park is stunning and as soon

as I saw it, I fell in love. I thought it would

be out of my budget, but because we

had a December wedding and booked

so far in advance, it was much cheaper.

Did you have a theme?

I wanted a winter wonderland wedding

with lots of candles, fairy-lights and a

colour theme based on my sapphire and

diamond ring. There was lots of silver and

sparkle and for a hint of blue the boys

wore navy blue suits, there were blue

tea-lights on the tables, a sweet stand

with striped bags for the sweets and the

wedding cake had blue ribbon around it.

What did you choose for entertainment?

We had a harpist for when I walked down

the aisle and in the evening we had a

band play. They were brilliant.

What food did you choose?

We had canapes during the day and

a two course meal in the evening. The

starter was duck noodle salad and

the main course, braised beef. It was

delicious. The dessert was the

wedding cake.

Were there any surprises on the day?

I’ve always ridden horses and initially

wanted a horse and carriage, but

because of our budget, it got pushed

to the bottom of the list. It was the most

lovely surprise to walk down the steps

of the cottage at the venue and find that

my dad, mum and brother had surprised

me with a horse and carriage! It was

really special.

Where did you go for honeymoon?

We went to Costa Rica and travelled

around to see the rainforest and jungle.

We spent the last week by the sea and

had some sunshine. It was amazing.

What’s your advice for couples planning their own weddings?

I think just try not to get too carried away.

Northbrook is such a beautiful venue it

doesn’t need too much else, just a little

personal stamp.

gift & carlona cultural & classy wedding Photographs by Claire Lau Photography

How did you meet?

We met on a train in 2005, travelling from

the Midlands to London. Carlon asked

me for my name and kept in touch via a

social networking site called hi5. He went

away to Grenada to study medicine and

when he moved back to England in 2008

he got back in touch and we arranged to

meet up. It went from there...

How did he propose?

It was Easter Sunday 2013 and I wasn’t

feeling too well, but Carlon insisted that

we go out for lunch. We went to The

Lansdowne Club, a private members club

in London. While we were eating lunch

I thought that the waitress was looking

at me strangely, but Carlon told me she

just liked my dress! Anyway, after lunch,

the waitress handed me flowers and led

us into the piano room where someone

was singing our favourite song! Turned

out be a well-known jazz singer we had

seen at “Club 606” on Valentines Day! At

the end of the song, Carlon got down on

one knee and proposed. I was laughing

so much, with happiness, I didn’t even

look at the ring. I just said ‘Yes’! He had

designed the ring himself too, which was

really touching.

Why did you choose Froyle Park as a venue?

We loved the history of the venue - it

used to be a school and I liked that it was

different. It’s beautiful, has plenty of space

and was a lovely mix of modern and

historical. Also the details like the massive

chandeliers were beautiful and great for

photos. We actually got married outside,

which was an amazing setting.

Did you have a theme?

We didn’t have a theme as such, but

aimed to have a cultural and classy

wedding. I’m African and Carlon is

Caribbean so we just let our guests come

as they wished and many wore traditional

outfits which was lovely and colourful.

What entertainment did you choose?

We had a DJ, reggae band and

African dancers. The guests enjoyed

the entertainment but also Carlon came

out with some pretty good moves,

which I loved.

What catering did you choose?

Froyle Park allows external caterers, so

we had CCP, a Caribbean caterer who

provided a delicious selection of food

from curried goat to jerk chicken. We

had Caribbean rum cocktails at the start

too and for desert we hired an ice-cream

parlour, Gelato Heaven.

What was your favourite moment?

When we were going out, Carlon always

used to give me £5 so that I could get

a taxi home and I used to tease him

saying it cost more than £5 and that he

was tight! During his wedding speech he

presented me with a framed, gold-plated

£5 note, which was very funny but also

very touching!

Where did you go for honeymoon?

We went to Antigua and stayed in an

amazing hotel. We spent a few days

discussing the wedding then just

completely relaxed.

What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding?

Do things your way, whatever other

people suggest and from a bridal point of

view I’d say don’t let it be a stress. Have

fun and enjoy the time with your partner.

your wedding, your way

laura & marka classic weddingPhotographs by Galileo Photography

How did you meet?

Laura and I first met in 1998, when I gave

her, her first job. We worked together and

were friends for a number of years and

then didn’t see much of each other for

years. We were both invited to a mutual

friends birthday four years ago. Since that

night we have been together.

How did you propose?

We went to Venice for our two-year

anniversary and I proposed on a Gondola

on the Venice canals. It all went to plan

pretty much, but my biggest problem was

that I had to keep the ring somewhere

safe for two days before I proposed. She

almost found it on the way to the airport,

in the room safe and in my coat...

Why did you choose the venue?

Northbrook Park was pretty, had

everything we needed and the

accommodation was a big bonus. We

also got married on a Thursday and felt

we got amazing value for money. The

grounds were especially amazing – with

the peacocks and flowers – it made a

great backdrop for the photos.

What did you do for entertainment?

We had a magician for the wedding

breakfast and a DJ in the evening.

What food did you choose?

We had canapés, duck for the main

course and panna cotta for dessert.

We had a cheesecake cupcake tower

and hog roast in the evening. For

drinks, we had a free bar throughout

the day, another reason why we chose

Northbrook, no corkage.

Any surprises on the day?

We got married on Laura’s birthday and

I bought my wife a Dyson hoover. She

loved it…honestly! She loves housework

and it’s joked about that we live in a show

home! So as part of my speech I did a

piece on her birthday, how I had bought

her something that set an understanding

for our relationship, would make her

life easier, and was something she had

always wanted. I presented her with it at

the end of my speech - you have never

seen anyone so happy to get a hoover!

What was the best part of the day?

The ceremony – actually saying ‘I do’ to

each other.

Where did you go for honeymoon?

We had a week in Las Vegas and Laura

made me do a sky-dive to celebrate! That

was followed by a week on a Caribbean

cruise. We flew out at 3pm the day after

the wedding and opened all our cards on

the plane together.

What is your advice for couples planning their own wedding?

Set your budget then add 50 percent as

you will probably spend it. Do as much

as you can early on, to reduce the stress

leading up to the day.
