A GreatPlace to Live

North Hertfordshire provides a mix ofpleasant rural landscapes and attractivemarket towns of Baldock, Hitchin andRoyston and also includes the world's first garden city Letchworth. The district's location within the influenceof a number of different economies makes it attractive for future investmentparticularly as the road and rail infrastructuremake movement easy in any direction.

The district has some of the best schools in the country. Hitchin Girls’School and Hitchin Boys’ School are internationally renowned.

House prices in North Hertfordshire are also significantly lower than theHertfordshire average making the area a much more attractive environment fora potential workforce.

The Economy

North Hertfordshire has a diverse economy reflecting the mix of urban and rural environments as well as its locationbetween key centres and influences from different economies.

There is a higher concentration of people employed in sectorssuch as manufacturing, construction, retail, motor trades,property, entertainment and recreation. Sectors such as science,finance and insurance and information and communicationmake a substantial contribution to the overall economic output, although not employing a huge number of people.

The majority of businesses in North Hertfordshire are of a small or medium scale. This reflects the high level ofentrepreneurship but also makes the economy resilient and adaptable to change.

North Hertfordshire is strategically located in the heart of key commercial centres with an excellent transport network linking thearea to the rest of the UK, Europe and global economies.

The district sits between Luton and Milton Keynes to the west,Cambridge to the north, Stevenage to the east and London, 30 miles to the south.

Road

By road the A1(M) passes through the middle of the district and the M1 passes just six miles from Hitchin at Junction 10. Theseroads provide easy access to the North of the country as well aslinking to the M25 London ring road.

The A505 provides an east-west link between Luton through to, andbeyond Royston. The A10 passes through Royston and the villagesto the south linking London with Cambridge and areas further north.

Rail

The district's towns are all linked by rail to London King’s Cross (30-40 minutes) on the Cambridge line. Hitchin is located on theEast Coast Mainline providing access to the north of England and Scotland.

The stations at each of the four towns and also Knebworth are closeto the town centres providing parking provision onsite.

Bus

North Hertfordshire is well served by bus routes. The towns providethe key public transport hubs for bus movements out to villages andsurrounding towns. The towns are very well linked, providing stronginternal routes within the district.

Air

London Luton airport is only 15 minutes from Hitchin whilst LondonStansted and London Heathrow are both within an hour by road.

We aim to create vibrant, successful towns and villages, whilst protecting thecountryside in its own right.

Planning permission is required for most types of building work as well as forchanging what land and existing buildings are used for. If you run a business you have a legal responsibility for the safe disposal of the wasteit creates.

Through our contractor, North Herts District Council operates a commercial waste andrecycling collection service which is available to all companies, large or small, for thedisposal of their commercial waste on a contractual basis. Under the Pre-treatment

regulations, all companies producing waste must pre-treattheir waste before disposal. Recycling a proportion of yourwaste using our recycling service would fulfil this legal obligation and like many other businesses you can enhanceyour green credentials to your customers whilst also potentially saving money on disposal costs.

The business rates service is administered by the Revenues &Benefits Team. The non-domestic rates, or business rates, collected by North Hertfordshire District Council are themeans by which businesses and others who occupy non-domestic property make a contribution towards the cost oflocal services. The rates are collected by the Council, pooledcentrally by central government then redistributed to localcouncils according to the number of people living in the area.

The Hitchin Business Improvement District (BID) and Town

Centre partnership support and act in the interests of businesses inthe Hitchin town centre. They deliver projects and initiatives whichimprove the offer and attraction of the town centre. They have madeHitchin a particularly successful business environment and one wherebusinesses are thriving.

The manufacturing advisory service

North Hertfordshire College offers business focused higher education courses and an entrepreneurial learning environment.Spread across five main campuses with a wide range of subjects including arts, leisure, science as well as traditional A-levels and GCSEs,students include those aged 16-18 studying full time as well as adultsstudying management, professional and evening courses.

Students are encouraged to gain work experience when possiblethroughout the college. A number of commercial opportunities are open to students to work with college departments, offering support and assistance, as well as gaining a valuable insight into a live working environment.

The college works with businesses and is very involved in the local business community. It runs the national apprenticeship programme from the Goldsmith Centre in Letchworth Garden City andran the '100 Apprenticeships in 100 Days' initiative early in 2014,encouraging local businesses to offer employment opportunities toyoung people. The initiative was a huge success, seeing organisationscommit to employing or enrolling 187 apprentices in the local area.
