Infrastructure

Spread across a mammoth 647 acres carpeted by a lush green cover, the campus of NITR is situatedright at the conjugation of the hills of Rourkela. The campus is characterized by aestheticallypleasing buildings which have inspired generations of students to strive for excellence.

The campus is a mini township in itself with all the modern amenities. There are nine halls of

residence, seven for boys and two for the girls with an overall accommodation capacity of over4500 boarders. The entire campus is connected by a state-of-the-art network with almost 5000nodes. Every student and faculty member has a networked personal computer at his/her disposal.With an internet bandwidth of 180Mbps and 850Mbps intranet bandwidth, NIT Rourkela hosts oneof the most advanced computer networks in the country.

Biju Patnaik Central LibraryThe Biju Patnaik Central library, named after the former Chief Minister of Odisha, serves as thepowerhouse for research and studies for the entire institution. Spread over three floors, the libraryis an invaluable resource with 61,800 books and 20,000 back volumes of periodicals. The BPCLis automated with an integrated library software package called Libsys LSmart and modernized

with latest Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based automation system. The online repositoryhosts every paper, dissertation and thesis published by the students and faculty. Open Accessto Odiya Books is a not-for-profit project, initiated by National Institute of Technology, Rourkela,Srujanika, Bhubaneswar and Pragati Utkal Sangh, Rourkela. The mission of the project is to preservethe cultural history of Odisha by digitizing old, rare and new literary and other texts written in theOdiya language.

Computer CentreThe Central Computer Centre offers round the clock services with an uninterrupted power supplyto students on the campus with the latest infrastructure supporting research and studies at thecampus. It hosts the latest IBM servers with a storage capacity of upto 24TB, which is currently

being upgraded to 100TB. In a huge boost to the already advanced computing capacity, an 8teraFLOPS High Performance Computing(HPC) system is being installed.

Sports FacilitiesAt NITR, games and sports receive equal attention relative to any other academic activity. Thesporting infrastructure, one of the best among NITs, consists of the Aquatic Sports Facility,The Dilip Tirkey Hockey Stadium, The P. T. Usha Sports Complex and the newly built SachinTendulkar Cricket Stadium, all replete with floodlights, wherever necessary. A separate body forGames and Sports regulates, manages and organizes sporting events like the Annual AthleticMeet, Inter and Intra-Hall sports activities and various cricket and football leagues. There are

separate squads for all the games that represent the institute at Inter-NIT Sporting events.

Auditorium, Lecture Halls & Conference RoomsThe campus hosts a newly renovated centralised air conditioned auditorium,The Bhubaneswar Behera Auditorium with a seating capacity of 800. Thecampus also has a newly constructed Lecture Gallery Complex with differentgalleries having seating capacities of 60, 120 and 240 along with 12 other

conference rooms and the Pranakrushna Parija Auditorium with a seatingcapacity of 250, all of which are adequately equipped with uninterrupted powersupply, air conditioners and LCD projectors. The department has a very strong industrial interface with the faculty beingconstantly approached for industrial consultancy and Industry SponsoredResearch Projects. The research projects taken up are relevant to modernday scenarios. Both students and faculty publish a large number of papersin renowned scientific journals. An Excellence Centre for Environment QualityManagement has been proposed. Along with conducting various InternationalConferences at our campus the faculties have participated in a host of such

seminars at various prestigious institutes.


The Department besides having a host of highly qualified faculties is wellequipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, managed by professors andcompetent technicians. The instruments installed in these laboratories aresophisticated, numero uno in their own fields and some of them being only ofits kind in the country. FacilitiesThe Department strives to achieve excellence in both quality education as well asresearch. With its multi-disciplinary curriculum, it not only helps the students getexposure to the various aspects of chemical engineering, but also to enhance theirproblem solving abilities to meet the demands of academia as well as industries. FacilitiesThe Department has been recognised as a Centre of Relevance andExcellence(CORE) in the field of Ceramics by MHRD and is a Centre-of-Excellence(CoE) for nanomaterials. In addition to laboratories for chemicalanalysis, fuel testing, thermal analysis and high temperature work, thedepartment has a full-fledged Ceramic Workshop including facilities forWhiteware, Refractories and Glass with a cement testing laboratory. The

Department has a current generation X-ray Diffractometer and an advancedmicroscope having bright field, dark field, polarization and interference modeand an advanced facility for Electronic ceramics. Thus, equal emphasis isgiven to traditional as well as modern ceramics.

Numerous projects have been granted by MHRD and are sponsored byinstitutions & government organizations like Board of Research in FusionScience and Technology (BRFST), DST (Department of Science andTechnology), BARC, RDCIS, SAIL, DAE (Department of Atomic Energy) andCGCRI, Kolkata. TheDepartment has recently procured a 10KW Solar PV module with powerstorage capability and it has been installed in the centre for excellence inIndustrial electronics and robotics with the help of MNRE, Govt. of India, topromote research in Renewable Energy.

The Department actively invites industrial experts from many nearbyindustries such as Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), OCL and L&T to strengthenits research work. FacilitiesThe Department, in its prolonged years of academic services has been nurturing itstalent through its courses complying with the recent technological developmentsand specialized labs. These comprises of center for industrial refrigeration andcryogenics, advanced hydraulics laboratory and laboratories dedicated for solvingvarious thermal, production and design related aspects.

The newly established School of Management is the latest jewel added toNITRs crown of departments. Its objective is to develop managerial innovationand leadership talent of the students and to build a system driven approach onmanagement techniques and prepare students for business challenges. Theschool offers a two year post-graduate program in Business Administration(MBA) and subsequent research activities. The department focuses on valuebased teaching, learning environment, action-oriented research and consultingindustries by developing a strong academic-industry interface. In addition toprofessional expertise, the department gives more emphasis on training studentsfor collaboration and teamwork through the development of human relations skills.

The Department of Chemistry offers a 5 year integrated M.Sc., two year M.Sc. in chemistry courses, anddoctoral research programmes leading to Ph.D. degree. The Department has well equipped laboratoriesin the fields of Inorganic, Organic, and Physical chemistry with special emphasis on heterogeneous/homogeneous catalysis (including Nano) and Environmental Pollution Control, adsorption studies,organic synthesis, electrochemistry, Nanomaterials, surface chemistry, photochemistry, so lid state and

structural chemistry and optoelectronics. Presently, sixteen sponsored research projects are beingcarried out by the faculty members of the department which are funded by various funding agenciessuch as DST, CSIR, DRDO, FIST (DST), DBT, BRNS, etc.

The Department of Physics is the second Post-graduate centre in Odisha. The Department providesexcellent opportunities for education and research in a wide spectrum of areas in Physics throughits well-received Under-graduate engineering, Masters (integrated and 2 years) and Doctorate

programme. The Department has well equipped laboratories such as X-Ray Lab, Soft Condensed MatterLab, Thin Film Lab, Electro Ceramic Lab, Cryomagnetism Lab, Composite Lab and ComputationalPhysics Lab. The department has also collaborated with DRDO, UGC-DAE, DST-FIST, CSR, DPT,NGC,UGC- DAE CSR(Kolkata), UGC-DAE(IUAC- New Delhi), MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT &FOREST GoI, NEW DELHI & CP-STIO with Penn State, USA for research.

The Department of Mathematics came into existence in 1965 and has been offering 2 years PostGraduate M. Sc. course and doctoral research programme which contains both core and appliedaspects of mathematics. The department also has its own library and students can avail differentbooks. The highly qualified faculty and talented students publish a good number of researchpapers over a wide area of applied mathematics .Research includes various inter-related areas likealgebraic topology, boundary value problem and operations research number.

New Departmentsand Programmes

Course structure, curriculum and department dynamicsneed to continuously change and evolve to meet theneeds of research and industry. NIT Rourkela has beenconstantly evolving over time, adding new departmentsand courses to provide students with a lot more scope,choice and variety.

Industrial Design

The Department of Industrial Design, established in 2010,is the latest addition to the engineering disciplines of NITRourkela. The course curriculum for the programme hasbeen meticulously designed with inputs from several otherinstitutes of higher learning and reputed industries to caterto the need of the present day need of the industries. TheDepartment is also in close contact with the Departments/Centres offering similar courses in institutes of higherlearning and is continuously str iving to improve its academicprogramme.

B. Tech+M. Tech(5 yr. Dual Degree Programme)

Following in the footsteps of the IITs, the Institute has launchedthe B. Tech and M. Tech 5 year Dual Degree Programme fromthe academic session 2010-11. The introduction of theseprogrammes has resulted in an increase in seats and choicesalong with fulfilling a students aspirations of higher studies.

5-year Integrated MSc.

NIT Rourkela has started a 5 year programme leading to theawarding of an Integrated MSc. degree in the disciplines ofPhysics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Life at NITR goes way beyond therudimentary concepts taught in classrooms and laboratories.The institute offers excellent opportunities to the studentsto participate in recreational and creative activities through

its Students Activity Centre (SAC), which intends toserve as the nerve centre of all student activities in thecampus. It aims to foster a well-balanced developmentof its members through excellence in extra-curricularactivities along with their academic achievements.Four societies, namely, Technical Society, Literary andCultural Society, Film and Music Society and SportsSociety function under SAC. A number of satelliteclubs carry out activities in affiliation with the SAC,the major activities being the Annual Technical andCultural festivals. These flagship events attract

InnovisionThe annual techno-management festival of NIT Rourkela, Innovision is a summit of thetheoretical and practical aspects of engineering with an exposure on the latest trends andinnovations. Attracting participants from all o ver the country, it hosts workshops, guest lecturesconducted by the best in the industry and academia, robotics events, paper presentations, andvarious other events, all aimed at testing the technical acumen of the students.

NITRUTSAVThe Spring or Cultural Festival of the institute, NITRUTSAV has been a perennial feature of thecity of Rourkela poised in its own unique way between the pedestals of industry and civilization.The thousands of people that are drawn in by some of the biggest celebrities and crowd pullersmake NITRutsav one of the biggest cultural events in the eastern region. Celebrities invitedinclude singers Preetam and his Metro Band, Kailash Kher, Kunal Ganjawala, Pakistani bandJal, Indo-fusion band Euphoria, Indipop band Aryans and a number of other Rock bands suchas Pentagram.

International Student MeetThe student meet was aimed at providing a platform for the students to develop inter personalrelations with students on a global basis. The event played host to a number of technical, culturaland sporting events that attracted huge participation from many foreign countries.

Technical SocietySatellite Clubs

UdaanUdaan, the aero-modelling club, was formed and is managed wholly by the students. It conductsnumerous workshops, takes up projects, and carries out activities in aero modelling, robotics andother related areas and is a good learning platform for students who are fascinated by the wondersof flying.

CyborgThe Club for Automation and Robotic Control (Cyborg) is an independententity to serve the interest of students of the institute in the fieldof automation design and robotic control. Over the years,Cyborg has evolved from conducting workshops,to contrive as well as participate in amyriad of robotics contests on thenational and internationallevels.

IEEE Student ChapterIEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) is the worlds leading professionalassociation for the advancement of technology. The IEEE student chapter at NITR has conducted anumber of workshops on diverse fields like VLSI, GSM Technology, MATLAB software and FLASHanimation.

Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE)The SAE collegiate club at NIT Rourkela, a student branch of SAE International, is the first of itskind in Odisha promising to combine research, development, design, manufacture and utilization

of vehicles which operate on land, water, air and space. The members indigenously design an All-Terrain Vehicle(ATV) annually and compete in BAJA SAE, a national level competition along withconducting various workshops and design compeptitions.

Entrepreneurship CellE-CELL (Entrepreneurship Cell) of NIT Rourkela is the only e-cell working in the state in order topromote entrepreneurship in the region and also to provide incubation and funding through a venturecapitalist to nurture budding ideas and aspiring entrepreneurs. The club organizes workshops,awareness camps etc. apart from its flagship event Arthayan conducted annually during Innovision.

Mathematics ClubA small group of math-enthusiasts in NIT Rourkela, formed the Mathematics Club, under thetutelage of the Mathematics Department. A unique attempt to unravel the treasure trove thatthe subject has to offer, the club conducts events and workshops along with celebratinghistorically significant days like Pi Day.

Industry Sponsored ClubsThe Microsoft Club and the Sun Club, established by Microsoft India and SUN Microsystemsrespectively are unique initiatives to build better industry-student interface. The activities takenup by these clubs allow the members to work on the problems and solutions handled by theprofessionals in both these companies and provide better exposure with the current problemsand nature of work handled by these organizations.

CII Young IndiansYI(in association with the Confederation of Indian Industries, CII) is a group comprisingaspiring young Indian entrepreneurs, businessmen and professionals who unite under one roofwith the objective of creating a better future for the Indian youth and to bridge the gap betweenthe different sections of society.

BureaucatsThis club of NITR is engaged in personality development to prepare students in various reallife projects & reputed competitions like KVPY. The club boasts of a tie-up with techpedia.inbesides having published the first technical magazine of NITR.

Other SocietiesThe three other societies bring together to provide the necessary platform for the all-roundholistic development of the students.

Aasra, Leo and Rotaract (Social Service)AASRA is a social service club of NIT Rourkela, run autonomously by the students. Anabsolutely non-profit organization with the sole objective of spreading smiles in the faces ofpoor children, the group members visit underprivileged social communities like orphanages,leprosy colonies and special care homes and carry out various humanitarian worksThe Rotaract and Leo clubs are immediate extrapolations of the parent organizations, Rotaryand Lions Club International respectively, with a noble vision of universal service. Theseclubs work with a number of NGOs helping them out on fund-raising issues, in working

effectively and in promoting the idea of humanitarian relief.ClarionThe Literary and Debating Club of NIT, Rourkela, Clarion conducts events, competitionsand workshops related to public speaking and writing along with organizing Mock debatesand other elocution competitions. It organized the First NITR Parliamentary Debate and itsmembers have represented the Institute at various national level events.

Dance, Drama and MusicVarious student interests, hobbies and passions of the students are catered to by SAC.Aspiring musicians are provided with ample scope and musical instruments. Various studentbands at NITR like Euphony, Heartbeats, Almost Honest and Holocaust light up the stageduring various events and functions. Synergy and Mavericks are the two dance groups, which

set the stage at NITR on fire. Pantomime, the performing-arts group conduct various streetplays and productions to entertain the NITR crowd. These groups have participated and wonlaurels in major national-level events.

Quizzing@NITRInspired by Mastermind India and Bournvita Quiz Contest shows, Inquizzitive and Epistemeare the two quiz clubs which conduct regular quizzing sessions for interested and aspiring

quizzers. Quizzers from NITR have won in national-level quizzing events at IIT Kharagpur,Symbiosys Institute of Business Management and Mahindra Auto-Quotient.

The Training and Placement Department of National Institute of Technology,Rourkela, headed by a senior faculty member, manages placement activitiesand keeps liaison with various industrial groups and research organisations.The department works in close co-ordination with a student placementcommittee comprising students chosen from various departments. It

consists of sixteen members of which eleven representatives from B.Tech,three from M.Tech and one each from M.Sc. and MBA.

Pre-Placement Talks

Its a tradition here that the recruiting organizations visiting the institutecarry out pre-placement talks which are presentations organized by thecompany itself before the students. These talks allow students to learnmore about the companies. Audio-Visual rooms and auditoriums are wellequipped for the PPT with proper arrangement of microphone and soundsystem. The students can also learn about the opportunities for growth,advancement and learning that your company offers. In addition to thisthe students can also have a first-hand impression of the company before

HospitalityNIT Rourkela is well known for its hospitality for more than four decades and we strivehard to maintain the tradition. Transportation arrangement, air-conditioned suites withhigh speed internet facilities are provided in the Institute guest house for the recruiters.Proper arrangement for touring the institute can also be arranged when asked by therecruiters.

Internships/TrainingProjects/internships are an integral part of the academic curriculum at NIT Rourkela.Over the years, many students have taken up projects on various areas of engineering
