ToddlersFirstly thank you to everyone whoprovided jam jars for the stall at theChristmas Fayre and especially tothe mums who helped run the stall. This is a valuable way of fundraisingfor the group to keep down theweekly running costs.

As per normal we had a very busytime in the run up to Christmas. Wehad lots of Christmas crafts to getthrough and the highlight was aspecial visit from Father Christmashimself. Some of the children didnot really like the man with the bigwhite beard in the red suit too much– although they were OK after hehad given them a present!

This term we are planning for thephotographer Judy Hartland tocome to see us before Easter for ourannual photograph session. Keepwatching the notice boards in thevillage for more details

We meet every Thursday morning9.30-11.30am in the village hall toplay, do lots of craft and to generallyrun about letting off steam andmaking plenty of noise. If you feelyou can keep up with us, newmembers are always welcome.

Village Hall VandalismIt is with great regret we report that the village hall has become a target forpetty but destructive and costly vandalism.

For some time footballs have been fired at the windows in attempts toeither break the glass or simply leave football imprints. So far nobreakages, just muddied windows - greatly appreciated by our (costly)window cleaners! Much more seriously, two wooden spindles have recentlybeen wrenched/broken off the verandah.

This is rather senseless vandalism of a well used community building, wehave all worked so hard to fund, maintain and improve. We ask for yourhelp! Particularly parents, but also dog walkers and all users of the VillageHall facilities and adventure playground.

Please help us curb this problem. If you see such incidents please notifya member of the Village Hall Committee.

ParishCouncilAffordable HousingAt the December Parish Councilmeeting, the Clerk reported that on22nd November 2011 a HousingStrategy Officer from WDC called todiscuss the queries the ParishCouncil/Village had with theproposed housing.

The Officer confirmed that while theDistrict Council would be willing tolook at changing the design of themaisonettes they would notconsider changing them to housesas they would then not fit the ‘need’found by the original HousingNeeds Survey. The sewer concerns, the Housing Officer said, had beenpassed to Severn Trent.

The Chair summarised:• there has been a lack of

understanding from the villageregarding the term ‘AffordableHousing’

• the current infrastructure hasbeen declared satisfactory, however no-one has beenwilling/able to look into theVillage’s concerns regardingcurrent problems of drainage, sewers, parking, etc

• types of proposal/suitability -villagers are opposed to theerection of maisonettes ratherthan houses in a rural setting, andwith no accommodation forgrowing families

• once original tenants with links toBubbenhall have moved on, theproperties will be opened up to allon the WDC housing register andnot just those with links to thevillage

• there is major concern regardingfurther commercial developmentonce the Green Belt field is built on.

After further consultation with WDC,the Parish Council unanimouslyagreed to reject the WRCCrecommendation that they supportthe proposed development.

Neighbourhood WatchPCSO Jackie Pimlott attended themeeting on 6th March 2012 to giveadvice to the Neighbourhood Watch Committee. PCSO Pimlottdiscussed the different methods ofspreading news to Neighbourhood

Watch members and villagers, butalso made clear that care must betaken not to overly worry elderlyresidents.

Given the recent vandalism of theVillage Hall by older children in theVillage, PCSO Pimlott offered tosend a police car to the Village Hallduring the times at which thevandalism is occurring, up to 4nights during the week. The ParishCouncil and residents thought thisan excellent idea.

The NW Committee has a bankaccount with £50, suggestions weremade that it could be used to buysmart water. PSCO Pimlott alsostated she is able to provide NWstickers.

The Chair expressed hope that theNW would become a pro-activegroup. Cllr Haynes agreed toconvene a neighbourhood watchmeeting to organise a lead co-ordinator for the group. PSCOPimlott offered to attend that

meeting also. The Chair thankedPCSO Pimlott for attending themeeting.

DrainagePaddy Rudd, Warwickshire NetworkManager and Gaynor Jerzyszekfrom Severn Trent Water attendedthe meeting on 6th March to discussdrainage issues in the Village. Theywere informed that the Village hadproblems in Spring Hill, Lower Endand the main cause for concern,Lower End.

Villagers expressed dismay regardingthe recent Affordable Housing issueswhen Severn Trent stated that thecurrent infrastructure was sufficient todeal with additional houses, when itcannot cope currently.

Villagers took the opportunity toadvise the representatives from STWwhere the problems are and alsomarked them on a map. Paddy Ruddstated that if problems are found, itmay take time to resolve andpossibly cause disruption to roads.

BMX track amongst children in theVillage. Children would ideally like: askate park, a shelter, CCTV, multi-sports area with goal posts and more challenging/adventurous playequipment, access to toilets.

The skate park, youth shelter andmulti-sports equipment were the top 3;Cllr Haynes stated a sum of £35,000would be required to complete thework. However he suggested thiscould be a 5-6 year project, with timeto look into funding, grants andpossible sponsorship.

The Chair thanked Cllr Keates for allhis hard work regarding the recreationground. Cllr Baker will take on the roleof overseeing the recreation ground. The delivery and installation of a newbench (kindly donated) and picnictables to the recreation ground isexpected imminently.

• Shrubs Lodge, Pagets Lane -construction of a menageincluding floodlights – concernhas been expressed regardinglight pollution from the floodlights.

Diamond JubileeCllr Baker suggested the Villagecelebrate the Diamond Jubilee aspart of the Fete and Fun day on 16th

June) as this is during half-termweek.

The children’s tea party will takeplace after the main events at theFete, either in the tennis court orVillage Hall (weather depending). The BVE Committee has kindlydonated funds for an entertainerand parents will supply food. TheParish Council has agreed toprovide commemorative mugs for

BrowniesWell, after a lot of hard work by theBrownies we managed to send £60to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The Pink Coffee evening was wellsupported and the girls had lots offun showing off their fashions to ourguests. For our Christmas treat wehad a visit to Coventry SportsCentre for a party and a visit toFather Christmas. All the Browniesloved the bouncy castles and thegames organised for us by the staff. The party tea was enjoyed by all. This year we are going on anadventure holiday to BlackwellCourt as well as having our annualvisit to Rowington.

Thinking Day this year is based onan environmental challenge whichwe have started work on. TheBrownies have found out that on

22nd February (Thinking Day) theguests at Our Cabana in Mexico, one of our World Centres, walk upthrough the forests to see swarms

of Monarch butterflies whichmigrate there. Unfortunately a lot ofthe trees are being cut down andthese butterflies are at risk. Welearnt how fragile our environmentis. Over the next few weeks we willbe looking at other ways that wecan help our planet.

We have just enrolled another 6Brownies and have 6 more startedwith us this term. If anyone would liketo contact me about a future Brownieor if they would like to help as a leaderthen please note the new number.

Now for a busy new term, some children are working towards dance exams in March and we are starting our display dances ready for the summer! We’ve had some very excited girls starting tap dancing and who have had new tap shoes for Christmas: Elena, Amelia, Libby Remi, Abi, Jenny, Holly, Isabel and Phoebe. It has come to our attention that dogfouling appears to be on the increase inBubbenhall, particularly on the verandahat the Village Hall.

Dog fouling is unsociable and unhealthy,if it’s your dog it’s your responsibility. Doglitter is harmful to human health. It cancontain Toxocara an infection that ifswallowed, for example by youngchildren putting their finger into theirmouths, can penetrate the intestine, liverand other tissues such as the lungs andeyes and can cause blindness in somecases.

The majority of dog owners inBubbenhall do recognise theirresponsibilities, however there is aminority who do not, please help ustackle this by reporting dog fouling bycalling Warwick District Council on01926 412464 and ask to speak to amember of the Street Scene team.

The Council will act upon anyonewho lets their dog foul and fails to

pick it up.There is ahefty fine of£1,000!

Half term saw 12 girls stayingovernight in central Coventry. After an evening meal we went ice-skating (with varying levels ofaccomplishment!). Some competitiveboard and card games finished theevening. Unfortunately, we had tofinish early on Saturday morning dueto a shortage of adults.

Residential events are a popular partof our programme. Before Easter wewill be having a week-end on a bargefrom Braunston and more plans are inplace for the summer.

Guides meet in the Village Hall onFridays in term time, 7.15-9pm, forgirls aged 10-14.

Warwickshire County Council isleading on the project to improvethe broadband across the sub-region and we need your help.Clearly the money available frompublic funds will not be sufficient tosolve the problem for the wholesub-region, and so telecomsproviders who tender for the workwill be expected to make their owninvestment of at least twice theamount that is available from publicfunds. They will not be doing thisout of the goodness of their heart, and so are likely to prioritise thoseareas that are able to show thegreatest demand.

What can you do to help?Complete our survey: If you have not already done so please complete the broadband

survey that is located athttp://www.cswbroadband.org.uk/- there is one survey for domesticuse and one for business use, so ifyou run a business or work fromhome please do both – andencourage your neighbours to do itas well because the more peoplethat respond from a given area thehigher priority it will be.

Become a Champion: Could youhelp to bring faster broadbandservices to your local area?

We are looking for CommunityChampions to help us to get ourmessage out to rural communities.

The role will include: putting postersup on local noticeboards; deliveringflyers to households; providing hardcopies of the surveys to those whoare unable to access them on-line;

12

Bringing Superfast Broadband toOur Rural Areas

delivering presentations to localgroups about the project (but only ifyou feel comfortable with this!).

All material will be provided throughthe project website and in hard copy(it is currently being prepared and assoon as we know that the money isall in place we will start the printruns).

To express an interest in becominga Champion, please email yourname, address (with postcode) and telephone number [email protected].

rose to the occasion and slammedhome a last gasp winner - and allafter marking the pitch out on hisown too – what a hero!

Two top class strikes from JoeHewison and a scrappy effort fromplayer-manager Adam Halford (akaAVB) helped secure back-to-back4-3 successes against the youngopponents this campaign. A heroicdisplay in the home goal by GaryBevan also paved the way for thevictory – a sprawling save to deny astrike heading for his top left cornerthe pick of a number of top drawsaves.

The win was only soured by the lossof highly-rated defender LukeGethins in the opening exchangesafter the centre-back sufferedanother knee injury. We wish himwell on his recuperation. Gethinshas produced solid performancesevery time he has pulled on theBubbenhall shirt and has beensorely missed in the defence overthe last two years.

And it was also the case of the latelate show the last time Bubberswere in league action when NeilWoodfield hit a 25 yard effort intothe roof of the net with the last kickoff the game to claim a 2-2 for hisside at Bishop’s Tachbrook.

On a terrible pitch, down to ten menfor the best part of 70 minutes (dueto Halford’s dodgy knee) and

without an impartial referee too, itwas a well earned point for the awayside. Woodfield also grabbed theopener after looping a header overthe hapless keeper.

Tachbrook had been easily brushedaside 4-0 when they visitedBubbenhall in early January. LiamFlowers put in a man-of-the-matchdisplay in the heart of the defence,

while Hewison was at the double tonet his first goals for Bubbenhall. Two wind-assisted efforts fromDave Protheroe and Adam Parkercompleted a comfortable morningfor the hosts.

There was, however, little to cheerabout when Bubbers went to runawayleaders Chadwick End in lateDecember. Again there was no refereein sight, and you got the feeling it wasnever going to be the visitors’ daywhen they were denied a clearpenalty on the stroke of half-time. Theleaders were ruthless in attack andran out comfortable 5-1 winners asBubbenhall’s defensive frailties wereagain on show. Woodfield claimed theconsolation effort with a smart leftfooted half-volley.

A wonder goal from Ian Ward hadpaved the way for another 4-3success on home turf the previousweek. The former player-managerhit an astonishing first time shot

from just insideHeathcote Athletic’shalf to help a patchedup Bubbenhall tovictory! Jamie Stokes, along with Dave andSimon Protheroe theother scorers in agame which also sawrare appearances forboth Danny Kinghamand Gareth Hughes!

So at the time ofwriting Bubbenhall sitjust below the leaders, albeit havingplayed up to four more games thanChadwick End, and remain verymuch in the mix for second or thirdspot!

Off the pitch, big congratulationsfrom everyone associated withBubbenhall FC to solid defenderStuart Levis on the arrival of his andAbi’s first child Holly! A big thankyou to everyone who has braved the

often terrible weather conditionsand continued to support the teamthis season, you do not gounnoticed!

BRINGING SUPERFAST BROADBAND TO OUR RURAL AREASLast year the Government announced that £530m was be made available for the provision of superfast broadband (min 24Mbps) to 90% of properties in the UK and that a minimum speed of 2Mbps should be available to 100% of properties.

£4.07m of this funding is available for Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire for the roll-out ofimproved broadband, although there is a requirement that this amount should be match-funded from Local Authority capital funds.

Warwickshire County Council is leading the project to improve the broadband across the sub-region and we need your help.Internet suppliers will only invest in building broadband infrastructure if they can guarantee sufficient demand for a good return on investment. This is why urban areas receive the best internet connectivity and why public funds are required to assist with the large investments needed to reach our rural areas.

Even so, the telecoms providers who will tender for the work will have to invest significantly morethan the public subsidy to build the infrastructure and they will only do this in areas that are able to demonstrate the greatest demand.

Complete our survey; If you have not already done so please complete the broadband survey that is located athttp://www.cswbroadband.org.uk/ - there is one survey for domestic use and one for business use,so if you run a business or work from home please do both and encourage your neighbours to do itas well because the more people that respond from a given area the higher priority it will be.

Your assistance could make all the difference to your area getting superfast broadband!

Broadbandin BubbenhallAs I am sure you are already wellaware, the quality of the broadbandservice in the village is pretty poor. Our local MP informed me that agrant of £4 million has been given tothe local authority to improvebroadband in the areas not beingupgraded to fibre optic by BT.

I have been talking to Leigh Hunt(from Warwickshire County Council)who is responsible for administeringthis grant, and she has clarified thesituation:1. The £4 million is to be split

between Coventry, Solihull andWarwickshire (with Warwickshiregetting £3 million).

2. They will not get a penny unlessthe relevant local authoritiesmatch the grant.

3. The combined sum (£6 millionfor Warwickshire) will still not beenough to upgrade all thoseareas that require it.

In light of point 3 above, what shewill have to do is to find suitablesubcontractors to do the upgradewho will also be willing to part fundthe project. In order for them to beconvinced that this will be aworthwhile investment, they willneed to know that there would besufficient future business to justify it.

To this end I would urge you to go to the county websitehttp://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/superfastbroadband and fill in thesurvey (click on the link in the righthand panel about 6 inches down),for either personal or business.

Let them know that Bubbenhall willbe the right place to invest in anupgrade!
