Introducing Engineering at University College Roosevelt

In September 2020, UCR will add a number of engineering courses to its Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum. You, however, can already be part of a group of pioneer students, starting in September 2019. You will have the opportunity to pilot new learning activities and projects, as well as co-create a new and innovative curriculum!

The pressing challenges of our day and age are

global and complex. Think, for example, about

sea-level rise, diminishing biodiversity and the

generation of sustainable forms of energy. All

these issues are daily business in our region, as

UCR is located in the heart of the Scheldt Delta.

Engineers who are able to conceive of high-tech

solutions are therefore essential. Those engineers

also need to be able to consider the environmental

impact, societal acceptance and ethical dilemmas

associated with these solutions. Are you that

engineer?

Engineering will be a part of our Liberal Arts

and Sciences curriculum. This means that

questions from Science, Social Science and Arts

& Humanities will all feed into your curriculum

as well. You will have the unique opportunity to

combine engineering courses with courses in

law, arts & design, economics and other relevant

fields. During your time at UCR you will take both

theoretical courses, with a focus on academic skills,

as well as engineering projects, aimed at training

your engineering skills. In the projects you will

address a relevant societal engineering problem

by constructing a prototype of an actual product

or service. At the end of your studies you will

receive a B.Sc. in Liberal Arts and Sciences with a

specialization in Engineering.

Annual Tuition FeesEuropean Nationals: € 3,358 (fee reduction in the first year possible)Non-European Nationals: € 8,966

Living Costs€ 800 - € 1,000 per month

Financial Aid All students applying to the engineering pioneer group may apply for a tuition fee waiver.

Application ProcedureLike all prospective students, you will have to go through the UCR application and selection procedure. This means you will have to submit a transcript, a letter of motivation and a letter of recommendation. Moreover, you will partake in an admissions interview.

Application RequirementsApplicants to UCR need to have one of the qualifications mentioned below (or equivalent thereof). Applicants to the engineering pioneer group need to pass a minimum math requirement.

• Dutch VWO with Math B and/or D• IB Diploma with Math SL (6 or 7) or HL• 3 Academic A-levels with B-B-B, one of which is

Math• American High School diploma + 4 APs with 3 or

higher, one of which is Calculus AB or BC

Application DeadlineEuropean Nationals: May 1, 2019Non-European Nationals: April 1, 2019

The following academic fields will be part of the Engineering curriculum at University College Roosevelt. It is up to you to decide which one(s) you want to focus on and how you want to combine your technical specialization with other UCR courses.

The first year curriculum for pioneering engineering

students will look like this:

Semester 1: Academic Writing and Presenting

Calculus

Thermodynamics

Project I – Energy Transition

Semester 2: Methods and Statistics

Introduction to Data Science

1 Elective from other UCR Courses

Project II – Sensors for Robots and Drones

Biological and Chemical EngineeringNew technologies in energy-efficiency and sustainability often rely on new materials. The Biochemical Engineer develops and tests applications of these materials.

Data ScienceA Data Scientist studies how huge amounts of data can be stored, analyzed, visualized, interpreted, and secured. Important applications are, for instance, pattern recognition and machine learning.

Electrical EngineeringAlmost all modern technology works on electricity, not only as a power source but also as a way to sense and process information. The Electrical Engineer is an expert in constructing and fine-tuning such systems.

Mechanical EngineeringA Mechanical Engineer imagines, designs and builds new products and processes, but also improves and optimizes existing technologies.

UCR Key Facts

3-year Program

Fully Residential

At University College Roosevelt you can design

your own program by choosing from more than 200

subjects in three departments: Arts and Humanities,

Social Science and Science. And of course, per 2019,

also from department number four, Engineering. As

the ideal UCR student, you are social, eager to learn,

curious and broadly interested. In the best tradition

of a Liberal Arts and Sciences education, you will not

simply grow academically once you decide to pursue

an education at UCR. You will also have opportunities

to develop as an individual who takes responsibility for

their own social and academic growth, as well as that

of their peers. Moreover, you will obtain the tools to

face civic and political challenges in a global landscape.

An education at UCR means moving to the southwest

of the Netherlands. You will live on a unique inner-

city campus by the sea, with guaranteed housing

throughout your program. You will become a member

of a close-knit academic community of no more than

500 students and 70 faculty members. A choice for

UCR is an out of the box choice for a small town

university where opportunities to make it your own

are abundant!

Visit us!

Open Days For a taste of what UCR has in store you can attend one of our Open Days, usually held in February, March, April, June, October and November each year. Check out our website for the latest dates and details.

Student for a Day ProgramA team of enthusiastic UCR student guides is available to show you around campus and take you to their classes. Take a look at www.ucr.nl/sfad for details and to sign up.

Individual visitsShould you be unable to visit us during any of the activities above, we can always schedule an individual visit for you and your parents. For more information please contact the Communications Office at [email protected].

At UCR, I took courses in computer science, mathematics, physics and economics, since Data Science was not offered yet. Being able to study in different disciplines gave me a unique advantage to solve problems in Data Science. I am currently in my last semester of a master in Data Engineering at Jacobs University in Bremen, and I will continue right after with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering combined with Machine Learning at the University of Malta.

Cynthia Koopman (Class of 2017)

At UCR, I followed a broad curriculum including computer science, physics and mathematics. This, in combination with an explicit emphasis on academic skills, has provided me with the knowledge and abilities needed to get to grips with new and challenging material. In my graduate studies in Artificial Intelligence, a joint programme at the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I use this all the time. I firmly believe that by combining various fields of study (soon including engineering), any UCR graduate is ready and able to tackle any modern interdisciplinary problem.
