On the Job...For nearly a year our state has

been in the grips of the worstdrought on record. We have hoped, prayed, begged, and bargained withthe Good Lord for moisture.Knowing that the moisture wouldbe Mother Nature’s elixir for ourlivelihoods. Early this morning Iwitnessed something else thatcould be considered liquid magicprovided by Mother Nature. We had an eight year old cow

calve in the early evening in thecalving lot. The temperature wasabout 40 degrees. Figuring that thecow had done this before, wedidn’t worry too much about hernot getting to work and getting thecalf going. During my routinecheck of the calving lot later Ifound that the calf had never gottenup and nursed. For whatever rea-son, he had played out and waschilled and lethargic. I got himinto the calving shed, and workedto get him to his feet. Finally Iheaded home and got the calf bot-tle, the drench tube and whateverelse I thought I might need. Myhusband Clint came along to helpme out. We put the cow in thehead catch and Clint milked aboutjust a pint into the bottle. The calfdrank the bottle dry and began toget to his feet. That colostrumproved to be the calf’s elixir, themagic that jump started his engine. It is wonderful when everythingworks as it should. The bull sale season for Ne-

braska Angus Association membershas gotten underway. Sale reportsare good despite the increased costof feed this winter…it proves thatthe cattle producers are finding the

President Speaksby: Clayton Glause, NAA President

binar this past week in which it wasstated that Nebraska and Wyomingare now officially in the midst ofthe most severe drought on record.I believe we have all been im-pacted, so I commend the produc-ers who have already made manyresourceful & difficult decisionsduring the past year to managetheir operation during the pendingdrought. I hope and pray for themuch needed moisture as we moveforward. The Cattlemen’s Classic is com-

ing up in three weeks and there iscontinued enthusiasm for theAngus breed show & sale againthis year. It appears that numbersare up from last year. I invite youto attend and see what several ofour state’s breeders have to offer.Furthermore, I look forward to thebull sale season that is already un-derway. Early sale reports wouldindicate another year of solid de-mand for Angus cattle. If you arein search of Angus genetics, I in-vite you to check out the Sale List-ing Calendar on page 26.I look forward to visiting with

many of our members and cattle-men at our upcoming associationevents. In the meantime, please besure to let me know if you haveany questions, comments, con-cerns, ideas, or suggestions.

Clayton GlauseNAA President

Greetings Cattlemen,What an exciting time of year

for cattlemen around the country asseveral are well into calving seasonand anticipating the process ofevaluating last spring's breedingdecisions. It is always interestingto see how those calves develop inthe coming months into what wehope will reach our intended breed-ing goals. January was a treat for my fam-

ily as Amy and I took our four chil-dren to Denver for the NationalWestern Stock Show. The weatherwas beautiful during the week forthe Angus shows and sales, and weenjoyed all of the cattle displaysand surrounding activities. I al-ways take pleasure in visiting withso many Angus breeders fromaround the country and many ofour Nebraska producers. Nebraskawas well represented in Denverand our producers should be proudof their accomplishments. They alldid a fantastic job of displayingand showing top notch Angus cat-tle.Nebraska is one of the nation’s

leading producers of Angus genet-ics, and many of our members havehad a significant influence on thatstanding. With that said, I encour-age anyone interested in learningmore about the Nebraska AngusAssociation to visit with myself,Suzy Hebbert, or any board mem-bers about the benefits of member-ship. What a great way to networkyour operation and build friend-ships with so many others whoshare many of the same interests! It is now the beginning of Feb-

ruary and thus far our winter hasbeen mild with very little snowfall…… Great for calving, butheavily weighing on many pro-ducer’s minds concerning themoisture shortage and its impact onthe existing feed situation. I re-cently participated in a drought we-

$B improves carcass, feedlot traitsBy Miranda ReimanTo make more money, try selecting for profit. That’s what dollar-

value indexes help cattle producers do.“It’s probably the easiest way to practice multiple-trait selection,”

says Megan Rolf, Oklahoma State University animal scientist. “It’s alsoa pretty easy way to select for profit, because we’re talking in terms ofeconomic values, so they either have profit or savings associated withthem.”Commercial cattlemen who want to produce standouts in the feedlot

and on the rail should look to the dollar-beef ($B) index, offered by theAmerican Angus Association.“It’s designed to aid in genetic decisions for post-weaning merit and

carcass value,” says Sally Northcutt, genetic research director for theAssociation. An updated technical summary shows the dramatic difference in

progeny harvested 1997 through 2012, sired by bulls in the top 10%compared to the bottom tenth among registered Angus sires (see table).“Selection of breeding stock based on a single trait is risky, as

progress may come at the expense of others,” the Certified Angus BeefLLC (CAB) “Black Ink Basics” tech sheet says. “Using the breed’s top10% of beef-value sires can produce calve with higher quality premi-ums, lower yield-grade discounts and better feedlot performance.”It shows data to back that claim: Progeny from high $B sires had five

times more Prime grading carcasses, while Standard carcasses were cutby almost two-thirds, compared to low $B progeny. Certified AngusBeef ® brand qualifiers increased more than 28 percentage points.“People will ask the question,” Northcutt says, “can I really realize

this difference in the feedlot and on the rail?” The top-vs.-bottom 10%comparison illustrates what’s possible.Quality grade is not the only place the top group won out. High $B

progeny had a 67-pound carcass weight advantage over low $B calves.Coupled with the grid premiums, that adds up to a $168.02 per-head ad-vantage for the top group.“The underlying economic assumptions are based on a three-year

rolling average that represents the commercial cattle industry,” North-cutt says.Improvements in Angus genetics, along with stronger grid signals,

contributed to an $85-increase in the spread between the two groups, compared to a previous analysis in 2006.“Quality has value in the industry and pounds have value,” Northcutt

says.In order to use an index properly, it’s important to know which traits areincluded, Rolf says.“You want to select for the highest index values and limit the use of

additional EPDs (expected progeny differences),” she says. “Otherwiseif you’re using something like dollar-beef that already includes yearlingweight and you also select for a higher yearling weight EPD, you placetoo much emphasis on yearling weight. The exceptions are EPDs that could help you set needed limits for en-vironment or ones that are not included in the index. For example, ma-ternal traits should be included in selection decisions if replacementheifers are being kept, because having females that produce live calvesand breed back needs to be a key consideration of any ranch. “The dollar-beef index does not have any maternal components or

calving ease,” Northcutt notes, recommending the dollar-weaning ($W)calculation as the “best kept secret for all producers.”That includes traits like mature size and milk, calving ease and a

cow’s energy requirements. The tech summary notes the higher $B siresalso had improved $W values, showing that both goals can be reachedin tandem, she says.“But dollar-beef isn’t just for those producers focused on retaining

ownership. Those who sell at weaning still need to keep it in mind forthe big picture of the industry,” Northcutt says. She recommends Angus bull buyers visit the Sire Selector on the

Miss Nebraska Angus2012-2013

North Platte, Nebraska is hometo this year’s Miss NebraskaAngus, Aliesha Dethlefs. She isthe daughter of Craig and LaurieDethlefs and Grand daughter ofKen “Dutch” & Marian Dethlefs ofRavenna.

Aliesha is a busy teen, partici-pating in many activities. She is onthe cheer leading squad at Her-shey High School and runs onthe Cross Country team. She’s amember of the state qualifyingHershey High Panthers girlsbasketball team and partici-pates in track too. She also isinvolved in One Act andSpeech teams. She attendsConfirmation class and YouthGroup and is involved in Com-munity of Faith activities.Classroom subjects that are fa-vorites include any of the scienceclasses especially chemistry, anatomy and biology.

A fourth generation Angusbreeder, Aliesha has grown uparound cattle and has been ex-posed to the Angus breed all herlife. She says being around cattleis what makes her who she is. Sheis always eager to attend a newAngus show and meet new people.Being involved in the National Jun-ior Angus and Nebraska JuniorAngus Associations has allowedher to learn more about the breedthat is such a big part of her life. She has attended both the NebraskaState Junior Angus Show and Na-tional Junior Angus Show since2005.

Her father, Craig, owner ofNorth Platte Vet Clinic is strong

supporter, mentor and teacherabout Angus cattle and encourag-ing her to show cattle. Laurie, herMom is office manager at the vetclinic when she isn’t helpingAliesha’s sisters Emily and Kacey.Emily is a sophomore at HersheyHigh School and Kacey is in the4th

grade.Emily also enjoys going to cattleshows and Kacey is very excited tobe starting her show career.

Aliesha has always admired thegirl in the Angus crown. Her Aunt,Pamela Dethlefs was the AngusPrincess in 1979. That admirationis what inspired her to run for Ne-braska Angus Queen. She feels itis another way a Junior membercan represent their breed and edu-cate others. She is passionateabout the Junior Angus Associationand what it can offer its membersbeside learning to show cattle.

Other Junior Angus contests thatshe has participated in includePosters, Public Speaking, Live-stock Judging, Quiz Bowl, CABCookoff, Extemporaneous Speak-ing and the Mentoring program. She is currently Secretary/Trea-surer of the Nebraska Junior AngusAssociation.

Aliesha’s future goals as Jr.Angus member include learningmore about the Angus breed andpassing that knowledge onto oth-ers. This includes working to-wards becoming a member of theNational Junior Angus Board ofDirectors. That goal to becomea Board member goes hand inhand with her chosen majorfollowing her 2013 highschool graduation. Alieshahad been accepted to the Uni-versity of Nebraska-Lincolnin the fall of 2013 where shehas signed on to major in AgJournalism with an emphasis inPublic Relations. She wouldalso like to explore Communica-tion Studies and work withgraphic design.

Advice that Aliesha would offerto future Nebraska Angus Queensis to “Be Confident! It might seemfrightening at times being in frontof so many people, but they don’talways have eyes in your direc-tion”. She added, “.You are notonly representing the state of Ne-braska, but also the Angus breed.Always remember to smile! "
