Dear Nebraska Angus Friends,
By: Trevor Lienemann NAA President
As the song goes, “It’s themost wonderful time of theyear!” No, I’m not talking
about Christmas. For cattle pro-ducers, bull sale season and calv-ing season make this the mostwonderful time of the year. This isthe season where we get to enjoythe fruits of our labor. With newcalves being born and getting toevaluate (at least initially) howwell we did last spring with ourbreeding selections. It’s an excit-ing time of year, and an excitingtime to be in the cattle business.
After years of decline in cattleherd numbers, recent trends indi-cate herd numbers are on the rise. With beef prices reaching historichighs, cattle producers are retain-ing and breeding more females. The optimism beef producersdemonstrate by holding on to theircattle for breeding purposes ratherthan selling them for market beefis a true indicator of assurance inthis industry.
This is good news for anyoneinvolved in the cattle industry andwe see this in recent sales. We arewell into the bull sale season, andalthough we have seen a slight de-cline in fed cattle prices, we arestill enjoying a “bull market.”Angus genetics are dominant, andhighly sought after by both seed
stock producers, as well as com-mercial programs. The validationAngus producers receive duringbull sale season is second to none.Congratulations to all who havewrapped up their sales, and goodluck to those of you who havesales in your future.
As you are reading this, the2015 Cattlemen’s Classic will be inthe books. This is an event thatbrings cattlemen from across thestate to display the best they haveto offer. The Angus breed contin-ues to bring a lot of excitement tothis event and is highly competi-tive in both the show and sale ring.I’m sure this year will be no differ-ent. I invite you to consider all theAngus breed has to offer by read-ing this and other related periodi-cals, attending shows and sales, and visiting with fellow Angus en-thusiasts.
As an organization of Angusbreeders we are have a lot to offeras a collective group, and addi-tionally we have a lot to offer to in-dividual breeders. Anyoneinterested in learning more aboutthe Nebraska Angus Association, and all we have to offer feel free tocontact me, Suzy Hebbert, or anyof the board members.
I look forward to visiting withmany of you at upcoming events, and representing you as this year’sNebraska Angus Association Presi-dent.
Sincerely,
Trevor Lienemann

Dear Nebraska Angus friends,
By: Jerry Connealy AAA Director
Spring is well underway, andhere’s wishing everyone agreat spring calving season!
We are thrilled that the strongcattle market is holding steady, and the optimism in our industryis fantastic.
In December, the new AAAboard members were encouragedto travel to the Certified AngusBeef headquarters in Wooster,Ohio for an introduction to thatsegment of the Angus Associa-tion’s enterprise. Certified AngusBeef is extremely influential in thedominance of Angus cattle intoday’s market, and that demandfor Angus cattle by feeders andpackers filters down to each of usin the premium prices paid for ouranimals.
This was a great opportunity tosee the headquarters, experiencethe Culinary and Education Cen-ter, and meet the terrific team thatcomprises Certified Angus Beef’sinner workings. The passion thatthese bright, motivated folks havefor the brand, and for their indi-vidual roles in guaranteeing itssuccess, was truly inspiring.
At the headquarters, we wereshown the original letter that wassubmitted by Harold Etling, anAngus breeder from Marshallville,OH, in the mid-1970s. It outlinedhis idea of a franchise for highquality Angus beef. That letter isconsidered the blueprint for ourbranded product. It was fascinat-ing to witness how insightful thisletter was with regard to the im-pact this franchise would have onthe Angus breed. Mr. Etling, in co-operation with board member Fred

Johnson and a handful of key in-dustry strategists, were responsiblefor bringing Certified Angus Beefinto existence. Ohio’s RegionalManager at the time, Mick Colvin, brought his legendary enthusiasmto his appointment as the brand’sfirst executive director, and is cred-ited with giving the program agreat jump-start.
The Certified Angus Beef storyis a wonderful example of how wecan all make a difference in this in-dustry. One member articulatedhis idea, it landed in front of theAAA board, and we are all thebeneficiaries of that great vision.
With that, I encourage each oneof you to share any ideas you mayhave for the enhancement of ourbreed. Perhaps the next great ideafor our industry could come from aNebraska member!
Additionally, if your travelswill be taking you to the Woosterneighborhood, I would encourageyou to give them a call and inquireabout a visit to that fine place.
In the meantime, continue tospread the good word about Certi-fied Angus Beef!

Nebraska Angus Queen SpotlightNebraska Queen and Nebraska Queen and
Agricultural CommunicatorAgricultural Communicator
Michelle KeyesThis year’s Nebraska Angus
Queen, Michelle Keyes, hails from thecommunity of Springfield, NE, whichis located just outside of Omaha.Michelle and her two older sisters,Melissa and Jenny are the 5th genera-tion to live on her family farm and the3rd generation to raise Angus cattle. The Keyes family also consists of par-ents Kevin and Teresa. Kevin runs thefamily farm and Teresa works in theSarpy County election office. Melissa, her oldest sister recently graduatedfrom UNL with a degree in agricul-ture communications. She cur-rently is head of the Ag in theClassroom for a Northwest Iowacounty. Jenny, the middle of thethree Keyes girls, is a junior at theUniversity of Nebraska – Lincoln, also studying agriculture com-munications and journalism.Michelle and her family have
raised cattle for “as long as shecan remember”, so being in-volved in the Nebraska Jr AngusAssociation and her family’smembership in the NebraskaAngus Association is a natural fit. However, Michelle’s agriculturalproduction experience isn’t limited tocattle. When she and her sisters wereyounger, they raised broilers, layinghens and turkeys. They had a com-mercial poultry dressing buildingwhere they dressed the chickens them-selves, and they sold farm fresh eggsto local customers. Her parents werealso involved in the swine industry aswell, prior to Michelle’s birth. All thisexperience in the agriculture industryis what fuels her passion for agricul-ture.Animal Science classes are
Michelle’s favorite classes in college, and she is also active outside ofschool. She is a member of the Ne-braska Junior Angus Association, cur-rently holding the office ofSecretary/Treasurer. She also hasmembership in the Junior Legion Aux-iliary Post 143, the Collegiate Cattle-women, Kappa Kappa GammaSorority and Agriculture Communica-
tors of Tomorrow. While most of herfamily attended or graduated fromUNL, Michelle is a freshman at KansasState University in Manhattan, KSstudying Agriculture Communica-tions and Journalism. She is also con-sidering a second major in AnimalScience.Michelle became interested in being
Nebraska Angus Queen because of hersomethingher
Mom,Teresa, in-stilled in her daughters. Teresa al-ways believed her daughters shouldbe “role models” for younger children.Michelle felt that there was no betterway be a role model for the youngergirls in the Nebraska Jr. Angus Associ-ation than to serve as Queen. Shestrives to do her best and be someonethe younger girls can look up to.Michelle literally earned the NebraskaAngus Queen title by participating inthe revamped Nebraska Angus Queencontest this past summer. The contestconsisted of a prepared speech, a ses-sion on queen etiquette, and a grouppresentation before a panel of judges.
The girls also attended the queenluncheon along with their Mothersand the judges. The grueling two day Queen con-
test prepared Michelle well for her re-sponsibilities of Nebraska AngusQueen. Just a few of her jobs includeattending all Nebraska Angus showactivities such as the Nebraska StateFair, the Junior Winter Show, Ne-braska Cattlemen’s Classic AngusShow and Sale, and the Nebraska Jun-ior Preview Show. As part of theshow duties she hands out ribbonsand is Nebraska’s representative inshow photos. Michelle also attendedthe National Western Stock Show inDenver this past January, where sheassisted Miss American Angus inthe show ring. She encourages allfuture queens to attend the stockshow if they have the opportu-nity to learn more about theAngus breed and queen respon-sibilities on a national level.Advice that Michelle has for
future Nebraska Angus Queencandidates is to prepare yourselfwell in whatever you do. Beready to attend as many Angusevents as possible. Whether it’s amember’s sale, an Angus show, oreven the Angus tour, you will al-ways be welcomed in any situation. These events are also great network-ing opportunities for the future.Don’t be afraid to step out of yourcomfort zone. Great experiences arejust around the corner if you’re wellprepared, and willing to expand yourhorizons.
