Bickel West, Brock Foxhoven Northeast and Chris Fryzek Com-mercial. Also leading their respec-tive districts are: Dave Nichols North Central Kory Ostrand andBrandon Meyer South.
These men, in their leadershiproles bring vast and differing experi-ences and skills to their positions. Some have grown up in the Angusseedstock business - they are 2ndand 3rd generation Angus breeders.Others are like me, are relative new-comers to the Angus breed. Severalare active and hold leadership of-fices in other livestock and Agricul-tural organizations, for instanceSandhills Cattle Association, andNebraska Cattlemen. They have in-vested much time, energy and havethe will to learn more. To borrowa motto from the national 4-H pro-gram, they want to learn more aboutHow the make the best (the Angusbreed) better. They have been par-
ticipants in the LEAD program, BeefLeaders Institute, and other trainingprograms. They bring skills andknowledge of livestock evaluationand judging, marketing, accountingand banking industry to the tablewhen making decisions. They willlead our association admirably inthe coming year.
Lastly, but certainly not least,my congratulations to this yearsProducer of the Year and PioneerAngus Award winners. These indi-viduals, years ago, had the ability toLook Forward and see the great-ness that is the Angus breed of cat-tle. The Otha Lovitt family wasrecognized for his early contribu-tions in establishing the Angusbreed here in Nebraska. You canlearn more about Othas contribu-tions on page 26. Lori Wagner, owner of Sonderup Angus at Genoa, was, in her own words shocked tolearn she was named 2013 Nebraska
Angus Producer of the Year. ReadLoris story on page 22. Her contri-butions as a Mom, wife, AngusBreeder and Breed association leaderare many. I am honored to call hermy friend and Nebraska Angus Pro-ducer of the Year. Yes I am LookingForward to much success for ourmembers, our association and ourAngus breed in 2014, and beyond.
Until Next time.

Angus friends and colleagues,
By: Dru Uden, NAA President
The bull sale months arealmost upon us againand all of us from thenorthern border to the southernstate line are looking forward tohaving a prosperous year. In re-cent years we've seen drastichighs and lows and I knowmost of us would be gratefulfor some middle ground and alittle more peace of mind, butsuch is the nature of our busi-ness. We are the ones at the tipof the sword, breaking newground in the beef industrytime and time again. Our greatstate registered 22,570 headwith the American Angus Asso-ciation in 2013, ranking us num-ber two in the country.
I am proud to count myselfamong the ranks of Nebraskacattlemen and I am honored to
have the opportunity to serveas president of the NebraskaAngus Association. Angus hasalways been my life and as athird generation breeder bothpaternally and maternally, I willstrive to do justice to the office Ihave been given.
I thank you for the trust theNE Angus Association hasshown me and I welcome anyof your suggestions and newideas.

Dear fellow Angus
breeders
American Angus Board UpdateAmerican Angus Board UpdateBy: Arlen Sawyer, AAA Board Member
First of all, I would like tothank all of the Nebraskadelegates that attendedthe annual meeting in Louisvillelast November. It is very im-portant that we take the selec-tion of the American AngusAssociation leadership seri-ously. For most of our Ne-braska members, the Angusbusiness is a source of theirlivelihood, so decisions made atthe national level can directlyaffect them.
Our breed has reached itsposition in the beef cattle indus-try for lots of reason, but mostlydue to breeders like yourselves. The willingness of Angusbreeders to make independentbreeding decisions has resultedin breed improvements unpar-alleled by other breeds.
Congratulations to the Pio-neer and Producer of the YearAward winners at the recentNebraska Angus Associationannual meeting and banquet. Itwas great seeing a good turnoutat the annual meeting. Manythanks to Suzy Hebbert for allshe does for our NebraskaAngus Association.
If you have any thoughts orquestions about how the Ameri-can Angus Association can bet-ter serve you, please feel free tocall or email me. My cell phonenumber is 402-760-0232 and

12 January/February 2014 Nebraska Angus Association News
The first weekend of De-cember was full of Ne-braska Angus Activities! Many juniors attended the An-nual Banquet Friday night, inKearney where they got to hearinspirational Nebraska Angusstories and interact with Angusleaders from around the state.Additionally, we held our an-nual fundraiser at the banquetand raised over $4,500 to helpour Nebraska Junior Angus As-sociation (NeJAA) operate inthe coming year. We would liketo thank all of those who do-nated to and made purchases atthe auction. Thanks to all ofyour generous support we willbe able to provide more oppor-tunities for our members togrow and develop as youngpeople and leaders in the agri-cultural industry.
In addition to the AnnualBanquet, Saturday we had ourDecember meeting and Sundaywas the Winter Preview Show. One highlight of the meetingwas the initiation of a NeJAAmentoring program. Anyone in-terested in being amentor/mentee should contactCheyann Lovett (contact info:[email protected] 402460-0663) as soon as possible.Unfortunately, due to weatherand school conflicts we wereunable to have a National JuniorAngus Board member present. However, we are looking toreschedule the Green CoatsCoast-Coast program for Ne-braska. Despite the weather theshow was a great success. Wehad almost 50 pre-entries andthe show was a fantastic eventfor new members to gain expe-

Our next meeting will takeplace Saturday, February 22, atthe Cattlemens Classic in Kear-ney, Nebraska. This meetingwill be critical for juniors to at-tend. We currently have multi-ple very qualified anddeserving individuals wantingto run for the National JuniorAngus Board in 2014. Since eachstate is only allowed one candi-date we as a junior associationwill have to vote on which can-didate will run for Nebraska.Due to application deadlinesthis vote has to take place at theClassic meeting. Therefore Istrongly encourage all NeJAAmembers (for at least one year)to attend and help in this im-portant process.
I wish all of you and yourfamilies a very Merry Christmasand I hope to see many of youin Kearney!

Producer of the YearProducer of the Year
Lori WagnerThe story of our 2013 Angus
Producer of the year beginsover forty years ago when thismember was a 4-Her, one ofthree sisters who had Angusbreeding heifer projects. The an-imals were purchased for thegirls by their parents. Theseheifers became the base of thenow well knownbreeding programknown as Son-derup Angus.Lori, her sistersand their MomJudy, have fondmemories of driv-ing to the Erdmannbull sales in SouthDakota. It wasgreat family mem-ories in the mak-ing, while helpingto build the SonderupAngus herd. There theymet a couple from Nebraska bythe names of Vance and ConnieUden. The Uden's hauled thenewly acquired heifers homeand with that became a lastingfriendship. Numerous femalesand herd sires were purchasedfrom the TC Ranch with someof those bloodlines still tracingback to the herd today.
Upon college graduation,Lori and her husband DarrelWagner, along with her parents
Lee and Judy, decided to getmore involved with the breed.Through AI and embryo trans-fer, they were able to build theirherd up enough to start havingproduction sales that took placeevery year from 1990 until 2003.Darrel and Loris daughters,Ashley and Cassie also were in-volved in the Junior Angus As-sociation and 4-H. Many of thefamilys summer vacationswere spent at the National Jun-ior Angus Show.
Following the untimelydeath of Darrel, the familymade the decision to dispersethe majority of the cow herd in2003. Today the herd consists ofaround thirty registered cowsand around twenty recipientcows that are used to carry em-bryo transfer calves. Bloodlinesthat the cows go back to includeTraveler, Bando, New Design878, New Design 1407, TC Fore-front and TC Freedom. Lori
2013 Producer of the Year2013 Producer of the Year
continues to use AI and embryotransfer. The bulls and femalesare now marketed privately.
Lori served on the NebraskaAngus Association Board of Di-rectors from 2004 to 2010. Shewas the first woman elected toserve as President of the Associ-ation, and is only the secondpresident to serve two terms, two consecutive terms. She at-tended the National AngusConvention in 2010 where shewas a voting delegate. Her
valuable leadershipand involvement inthe Angus breed inNebraska is deeplyappreciated by ourmembers and fellowdirectors who servedwith her on theboard.
Today Lori andher oldest daughterAshley own and op-erate SonderupAngus. They are de-
termined to continue to pro-vide superior quality Angus
genetics and to the success oftheir valued customers. Ashleyhas hopes of getting her sisterCassies daughters involved inthe future. Lori and Ashleylove their Angus cows and willcontinue to be committed to theAngus breed.

Otha Lovitt Family
The Lovitt Angus Herd datesback to 1939 when Alvie Lovittshowed the reserve championAngus steer at the NebraskaState Fair. Proceeds from thesale of Alvies steerfunded the pur-chase of 6 head ofpurebred Angusheifers purchasedfrom the BillDorsett, going backto the John A. Ams-berry herd, one ofthe oldest Angusherds in Nebraska.
In 1942 the oper-ation joined theAmerican AngusAssoc. as the Otha F.Lovitt and Sons at Mason City.Later each son of the sons Alvie,Ronnie and Lyle took their owncattle under their own names.A daughter Iona and Art Mad-sen of Litchfield had their ownAngus herd.
Otha was a great promoter ofAngus cattle. He traveled manymiles to promote and assistyouth work in that field. Formany years they gave theLovitt trophy to be awardedto the highest ranking boy ofthe Nebraska Junior Angus Fu-turity Show. Otha andChristina also gave many tro-phies to the Champion Reg.
Angus heifer shown at theCuster County fair in 4-H.While Otha was living he gaveeach of his grandchildren anAngus heifer to start their ownherd.
In his own words whenasked about his favorite activity,Otha replied I enjoy myselfwhen able to sit on the seats orlean on a fence watching a live-
stock show especially a 4-Hgroup battling for top honors. Ialso enjoy helping other inter-ested breeders in the promotionof the Angus breed.
The Lovitts donated a heiferto the March of Dimes in 1956in the appreciation for a familyfree of polio.Otha was a past president of theNebraska Angus Assoc. in 1958-59. He received the Stockgrow-ers Angus Award of Merit in1959.
In 1959 two Angus heifersfrom the Otha Lovitt herd werechosen to be sent to the Univer-sity of Ankara, Turkey. Thirty
Angus heifers and fifteenAngus bulls were selected fromNebraska herds and flown fromNew York to Turkey. Three rep-resentatives from Turkey cameto this country and selected cat-tle for their University.
Otha received the OmahaStockyards Pioneer ShippersAward in 1972 for 50 years ofshipping cattle to Omaha. He
and Christina re-ceived the Knights ofAK-SAR-BENGood NeighborAward. They werealways involved andactive in their com-munity.
The Lovitt chil-dren and spouseswere involved in theJr. Angus Assoc. theNebraska AngusAuxiliary known as
the Nebrelles. Ronnieand Rodney both served on theNebraska Angus board of direc-tors.
Rodney Lovitt still hasAngus cattle as does his motherLoretta Lovitt.
Laney Stunkel, granddaugh-ter of Lyle and Jan Lovitt hasshown Angus calves at theCuster County Fair the pastthree years. She likes to pickout her own calves as 4-H proj-ects and has proven to be agood little showmen.
2014 will mark 75 years ofraising Angus cattle in theLovitt Family.

Angus Heritage FoundationWelcomes New Inductees
Four breed leaders honored duringthe Annual Awards Banquet in
Louisville, Ky.The Angus business is cen-
tered on the individuals andtheir families who continue todedicate their lives to the Anguslegacy. To honor leaders in-volved with the Associationshistory and shaping its future, each year the Association in-ducts members into the AngusHeritage Foundation. Four newadditions were recognized Nov.18 during the Associations An-nual Awards Banquet inLouisville, Ky.
The 2013 inductees are:James Rentz, Coldwater, Ohio;John L. Schurr, Farnam, Neb.;Brian Halverson, Baker, Minn.;and the late Woodrow WilsonKing, Rock Falls Ill.Each inductee or a family repre-sentative received a framedAngus Heritage Foundationcertificate and their names willbe engraved on the HeritageFoundation plaque displayed inthe library of the Associationheadquarters in Saint Joseph,Mo.
Photos and biographies willbe included in the next editionof the Angus Heritage Founda-tion booklet. Read more aboutthe 2013 inductees in the para-graphs that follow.
John L. Schurr
John L. Schurr of Farnam,Neb., has been raising Anguscattle in central Nebraska formore than 50 years. He startedin the purebred Angus businessin 1962 with his brother, Jerry.Together, they founded Schur-rtop Angus and CharolaisRanch in their hometown nearFarnam.
Today, John and his wife,Kay, together with their sons,Marty and Ryan, continue to becommitted to improving andadvancing the Angus breed. The Schurr familys third son,Wayne, was also an integralpart of the operation before hispassing in 2011.
A firm believer in perform-ance testing, Schurrtop Angus isa pioneer in the Angus industryas one of the first producers tocatalog genetics with (AHIR),test carcass merit using theUSDA carcass evaluation tags, and conduct ultrasounds forcarcass traits. Collecting data, and then making informedbreeding decisions based onthat information, has been acore mission for SchurrtopAngus and Charolais Ranchover the years. The operationcontinues to focus on multi-traitselection for their commercialcustomers.
John served two terms on theAmerican Angus Association
Board of Directors, and was alsoa member of the Angus Founda-tion and Certified Angus BeefLLC entity boards.
A former director of FarmCredit Services, John is active inthe community and has been aboard member of his churchand local school board, is a pastdirector of the Nebraska AngusAssociation, and was a 4-H clubleader for 35 years. In 2010,John and his family were recog-nized as the Nebraska AngusAssociation Producer of theYear.

Guaranteed Genetics to convert grass to pounds, because after all what we are really selling is grass. Add genetics that will more efficiently convert grass to pounds, ultimately adding more dollars to your bottom line than any other trait. Good ranchers ride good horses and have great hard working cows eating their grass. At Cedar Top Ranch we demand both. Pampered cattle simply dont have the bred-in ability to do their most important function of converting grass to protein. Cedar Top cows do this better than any other program in the country. Hard working cows make hard working bulls.
Incredible Quality ... selected from a continual AI program since 1965. You wont find a better set Guaranteed!

members interested in becomingmore effective leaders in the agri-culture industry are encouraged toapply for the seventh annual BeefLeaders Institute (BLI). Held June23-26, 2014, the program bringsAngus producers together in SaintJoseph, Mo., for a series of inform-ative sessions, followed by a three-day tour across several industrysegments.
BLI allows our members to ex-perience first-hand the entire beefproduction chain, and better un-derstand how their quality Anguscattle contribute to the industry asa whole, says Robin Ruff, Associ-ation director of events, activitiesand education.
Funded through the AngusFoundation, BLI is designed forAssociation members 25-45 yearsold to provide insight into the beefindustry, while enhancing theirknowledge of the Association andstrengthening leadership skills.
This opportunity really helpedme recalibrate my focus on thebeef industry, and look at it from amore holistic manner, saidRhonda Wulf, a 2013 BLI partici-pant from Morris, Minn. I wouldencourage others to apply, just forthat chance to see the industry on abroader level, to get out of theircomfort zone, broaden their mind, and to go back to work with a newenergy.
During the three-day event, BLIparticipants are able to tour a beefharvesting and packing facility, re-tailer, fabricator, feedlots and otherindustry segments, including theAssociation. The Association pro-vides transportation, lodging,
