Central District. My sincerethanks to Randy Pettera (outgoingPresident and Les Hall (outgoingNorth Director) for their input tothis organization over the last fewyears.

You can read more about oureducational afternoon sessions thatfeatured American Angus Ass’nCOO Bill Bowman and JenaThompson, Ass’t Director of PublicRelations for the American AngusAss’n; in the NAA President Clay-ton Glause’s message on pages 8 &9. Both Bill and Jena presenteduseful information to our member-ship regarding new programs suchas Maternal Plus and GeneMaxand marketing techniques for ourmembers. Jena also rescued theslide show I had prepared on ouryearlong events. It was DivineGuidance who prompted thearrangement of Jena being on ourafternoon schedule that day.

The slide show in itself was agreat experience for me. I learnedto use some new software pro-grams that came on our associa-tion computer. More importantly Ilearned something about our Asso-ciation which I had not realizeduntil I worked on the slide show. One of the greatest strengths thatour organization has is the friend-ship that our members have andthe fact we all are “Angus Family”.We work together towards a com-mon goal of raising the best beefanimals in the world…beef thatwill provide our consumers with aconsistent, flavor filled eating ex-perience. My goal is to have theslide show posted on our Facebookpage, You Tube and linked to ourwebsite by the time you read thisissue.

And with that I will close. Here’s wishing everyone a Happy,Healthy, Moisture Filled year. Please continue to pray for muchneeded moisture.

Until Next Time….

On the Job…

Dear Angus Friends,By: Clayton Glause, NAA President

Ihope you have enjoyed a won-derful Holiday Season filledwith all the blessings of family,

friends, & good health………andexcellent food as well!

First, it is an honor and privi-lege to be elected to serve as Presi-dent of the Nebraska AngusAssociation. Most recently, I haveserved two years as Northeast Di-rector, and last year as Vice Presi-dent. I have been around Anguscattle all of my life as my father(Loy) began raising RegisteredAngus with my Grandfather in1951. In the subsequent years, myparents raised a family of 13 chil-dren (7 boys & 6 girls) on the mod-est profits from a roadsidevegetable stand and a herd ofblack Angus cows.

Presently, I reside in Fremontwith my wife (Amy) and our fourchildren. While I am employed byCargill-Provimi NA as a Beef Con-sultant, I also assist with the man-agement of our registered Anguscattle operation at Palmer (LazyBlack Diamond Ranch) with threeof my brothers (Kevin, Galen,Brian) and nephew (Morgan). In-volvement at the home operationhas continued to build my interest

in keeping pace with the Angusbreed. Today’s technologies are to-morrow’s advancements.

Thanks to all who were able toattend our Annual Meeting & Ban-quet. Our “Angus Seminar” washeadlined by Bill Bowman, COO,American Angus Association andJena Thompson, American AngusAssociation Assistant Director ofPublic Relations. Bill discussedAssociation updates, the benefitsof enrolling in Maternal Plus, andhow commercial cattlemen can uti-lize GeneMaxTM to further en-hance their replacement selectionprocess. Jena gave us a broadover-view of social media and dis-cussed “Getting Started in SocialMedia and Why It Matters”.Thanks to Bill and Jena for con-tributing to our day’s educationalsession.

Election of officers was com-pleted during the Annual Meeting.Congratulations to Dru Uden(elected Vice President), and KoryOstrand (re-elected Central Direc-tor). I also congratulate and wel-come our newly elected Directors:Brandon Meyer (South Director),and Dave Nichols (North Direc-

tor). Our evening banquet washighlighted by award presenta-tions for Producer of the Year andPioneer Producer awards. Con-gratulations to Arlen Sawyer andhis family for Producer of the Yearhonors and to Steifel’s and Kraye’sfor Pioneer Producer honors.

2012 has certainly dealt us amixed hand - good cattle prices, but severe drought conditions. However you slice it, cattle pro-ducers have been innovative andresourceful in making decisions onhow to combat the situation athand. The current and future stateof our economy is also a bit of con-cern to many and how it may im-pact our business. Regardless, demand for beef has been strongin overseas markets. With somehelp from Mother Nature, 2013could potentially set us up formore record prices in the beef in-dustry …..stay tuned!

If you are not already a mem-ber of the Nebraska Angus Associ-ation, I encourage you to considerjoining. Membership benefits in-clude a copy of the NebraskaAngus News magazine, listing inthe Annual Directory, and mem-bership listing on our website. Inaddition, members are eligible forreduced ad rates in the magazineand printing discounts on yoursale catalogs from our printer. Anadded bonus from printing yourcatalog with our printer, is theposting of your sale catalog ontheir website www.livestockdi-rect.net with page flipping tech-nology, at no additional charge toyou.

My thanks go out to our PastPresident, Randy Pettera, and pastNorth Director, Les Hall, for theircontributions while serving on ourboard. At the same time, I lookforward to working with our cur-rent and newly elected boardmembers during the coming yearto discuss opportunities and mem-bership offerings. Kansas, and as would be expectedit was a very well-run, successfuland educational event as well. It’salways interesting to see howother breeders maximize their en-vironments to raise Angus cattle.

Our annual meeting inLouisville was another interestingevent with several people runningfor the American Angus Associa-tion board of directors. I mustcommend several young (at leastthey seem that way to me) Ne-braska breeders that were in atten-dance at the annual meeting thisyear, that haven’t participated be-fore. Thanks for being interestedin your American Angus Associa-tion and the process of choosing itsleadership. The policies set forthby the board, ultimately have long-term effects on the way we dobusiness, so please get involvedand let your voice be heard.

We’ve just returned from theannual meeting of the NebraskaAngus Association. Many, manythanks to Suzy Hebbert and thecommittee that chooses the “Pro-ducer of the Year” award winner. Iwas truly humbled and surprisedto find that my kids, Adam andJessica, had flown in to see theaward presentation. Thank you allfor the vote of confidence.

As we approach the holidays,we wish you all a prosperous NewYear with plenty of moisturethroughout the state. As always if you have any ques-tions or input concerning yourAmerica Angus Association pleasecall me at 402-760-0232.

Arlen Sawyer and his wifeBecky are owners of A&BCattle located seven miles

south of Bassett in the north cen-tral Sandhills region of Nebraska.

The Angus roots run deep inthe Sawyer family. Arlen’s grand-father, Howard WashingtonSawyer, purchased his first Anguscattle in 1917 and began raisingregistered Angus cattle in 1920.Arlen’s father, Richard JamesSawyer, carried on the tradition offarming on the family homesteadat Howard, South Dakota and rais-ing Angus cattle until his death in1990. Sawyer’s Angus was recog-nized as a Centennial Herd in1980. In 1987 the entire Sawyerfamily celebrated the farm’s cen-tennial.

Arlen is a graduate of SouthDakota State University and dur-ing his college years he was activein Block and Bridle Club, RodeoClub, Little International and wasa member of the SDSU 1974-1975Livestock Judging Team coachedby Dr. Dan Gee.

After college graduation Arlenmarried Becky, who had grown upon an Angus farm near Cresco,Iowa. In December 1976, they de-cided to move to Bassett, Neb.,where he accepted the position ofmanager of the 700 head registeredcow herd at K Plus Angus Ranch.

In 1982, Arlen and Becky pur-chased a small ranch in RockCounty, Neb. In 1984, the Sawyersbecame associated with PremierAngus and Silver Plume Angus asthey initiated the Profitmaker Bullprogram. A Premier cow herd wasmaintained by the Sawyers untilthe fall of 1990. From 1984 to1990, Arlen and Becky purchasedmore ranch land in Rock County,Neb., and expanded their own cowherd. In the fall of 1990, Arlen andBecky established “A&B Cattle”

and have conducted 22 annualbull sales since that time.

A&B Cattle was recognized asa Historic Angus herd in 1995, onthe 75th anniversary of the Sawyerfamily continuously raising regis-tered Angus cattle. Some of thefirst females Arlen and Becky pur-chased were from the originalSawyer Angus Farm herd. Arlenand Becky have two children, Jes-sica and Adam, who proudly makeup the fourth generation ofSawyers in the Angus business.

The A&B breeding programputs strong emphasis on calvingease, carcass quality, feed effi-ciency and feedlot performance. They have a rigorous selection pro-gram in the cow herd based uponproduction records, and try toclosely mimic the efficiency of thearea’s commercial cow herds onnative Sandhills forages.

A&B Cattle currently consistsof 600 Angus registered and com-mercial cows. Over the years theSawyers have taken advantage ofmany of the programs and servicessponsored by the American AngusAssociation including AngusSource tags, the CAB Value Dis-covery program, the AIMS soft-

ware management program,AHIR, and Maternal Plus. Theircow herd has been involved inDNA research testing conductedby the National Beef Cattle Con-sortium and Meat Animal Re-search Center for the past fouryears that includes research onidentifying gene panels for growthand reproductive traits.

Arlen is a member of the Ne-braska Cattlemen’s Association, and the Sandhill Cattlemen’s Asso-ciation. He is a past president ofthe Nebraska Angus Associationand the Area II Region of the Ne-braska Cattlemen’s Association. Hehas served on the Nebraska Cattle-men’s Classic board of directorsand on the Beef Advisory Councilto the Black Hills Stock Show. Heand his wife Becky have served asadvisors to the Nebraska JuniorAngus Association.

Arlen proudly represents Ne-braska on the American Angus As-sociation board of directors wherehe currently serves as Chairman ofthe Board for Certified Angus Beef.He also serves on the Angus Ge-netics, Inc. board as well as theBreed Improvement and IndustryRelations committees.

Nebraska. They have marketedcattle at the Nebraska Angus As-sociation sales in Grand Islandand Kearney, The SouthwestAngus Association sales in Mc-Cook, The Heart of NebraskaAngus Association sales in BrokenBow, and they hosted the sales forThe Sandhills Angus Associationat their sale facility in Mullen. In1991, Fred and Theresa held theirown bull sale and it has been anannual event for the last 21 years.

Fred has always enjoyed visit-ing with people in agriculture andhe has been a good ambassadorfor the Angus breed. Fred was thepresident of the Nebraska AngusAssociation in 1987 and 1988.

In 2001 Fred and Theresa hada complete dispersion of their cowherd, but couldn’t stay out of thecattle business for long and justone year later bought all of MaxHoffmeister’s cows.

Although the day to day oper-ations of the ranch have passed onto Fred and Theresa’s son John, his wife Julie and their grandsonDavid, Fred and Theresa are stillinvolved in the Angus businessand help with and promote theannual bull sale.

22 • January/February 2013 • Nebraska Angus Association News

Fred and Theresa Kraye wereboth born and raised in theheart of the Nebraska Sand-

hills. Theresa was born on a ranchnorth of Mullen, while Fredstarted his life on the familyranch, south and west of Mullen.

In 1953, in an effort to keep hiscows separate from his dad’sHerefords, Fred bought his firstAngus cows. Fred joined theAmerican Angus Association inthe 1950’s.

Fred and Theresa were mar-ried in 1956 and they raised theirfamily and made their living onthe ranch with the cattle. Fred’sparents were still alive and the ac-tual owners of the ranch. Fred hastwo sisters and the inheritance ofthe ranch was in question, so in1967, Fred had a dispersal sale atthe ranch of his cows and he andTheresa moved their family totown and bought a place of busi-ness. They and their childrenFrederick, Carol, John and Mike, operated Kraye Feed and Supplyand had a diverse business thatranged from selling feed, buildingconstruction, doing repair work, selling New Holland equipmentand trucking.

Cattle were always importantto Fred and Theresa and they re-entered the Angus business in themiddle ‘70’s when they boughtcows from Swede Mathews andSam Brannan.Fred also trav-eled to south-ern Nebraskaand boughtseveral cowsfrom MaxHoffmeister.Through JimBaldridge,Fred andTheresa alsobought cowsfrom DonPopkins.

name. Judy’s parents, John andFran Tucker, purchased a farm in1945. A new cement block build-ing, built for a milking parlor, be-came home for the family. Franborn and raised a city girl, spentthe summer living in this buildingwith four teenagers and a fiveyear old (Judy). Fran claimed thewind blew all summer long fromall four directions at the sametime. She christened the farm andeverything attached to it FourWinds.

In 1948, the Tuckers becameinterested in Angus cattle. Theypurchased some foundation fe-males which became the begin-ning of Judy’s 4H projects. Judyhad built a small herd of femalesby the time Tim and Judy weremarried in 1961. In February of1964 after Tim served his countryin the U.S. Army, they purchasedhalf interest in the Tucker herd. The partnership ended a few yearslater with a dispersal. At the dis-persion Tim and Judy bought theolder foundation cows and at thesame time, acquired the last of J.Hall Dillon’s cow herd at LongPine, NE. These two groups of fe-males were the basis of FourWinds Angus. Early success ofFour Winds Angus began with thesire Evaboxa Jr. and Dillon’s Doraline of females. They maintaineda herd of 75 – 100 registeredAngus cows.

Tim was president of the Ne-braska Angus Association from1973 – 1974 after years of servingon the board as a director. One ofthe main accomplishments duringthis time was getting the first fulldelegation to the National Angusconvention in Chicago. All whichwas instrumental in securing aseat on the American Angus Asso-ciation board for the state of Ne-braska, a seat that is still held by aNebraskan today.

To promote Angus cattle Timand Judy joined a number ofAngus Associations within thestate to exhibit and sell breedingstock. They participated in theNebraska Angus Futurity, which

Tim had a construction busi-ness for 35 years in which he didland conservation work. He re-tired the business in the fall of2011. The construction businessand the Angus cattle were a goodblend which helped support Judy’sherd of Percheron Draft Horses.

Tim and Judy have always felt

strongly about promoting Anguscattle and the youth of tomorrow. They have sponsored many events, one being the National JuniorAngus Show when it was in Ne-braska. They used theirPercheron’s to show-case theAngus queens and dignitaries.

In 2001 it became time to makea decision about the cattle. Theydid not know if it was old age orthe wisdom that comes with ageand experience. The cattle wereput on shares with Todd and Kris-ten Eggerling of Bluestem ValleyFarms and in 2007 the Eggerlingspurchased the herd.

In 2012, the American AngusAuxiliary celebrated 60 years ofpreparing young women for

the future, educating consumersabout the beef industry, and sup-porting junior activities. It’s alegacy built by countless volun-teers dedicated to the Angus breed. And it was only appropriate forAuxiliary charter member BetteVotaw, Welfleet, Neb., to be recog-nized as the 2012 DistinguishedWoman of the Year.Votaw washonored Sunday, Nov. 11 duringthe 60th Annual American AngusAuxiliary Breakfast in Louisville,Ky.

As Auxiliary advisor BarbaraEttredge, Pilot Point, Texas, beganher speech describing the awardrecipient, all eyes turned to Bette. While Ettredge transported the au-dience back in time, sharing Bette’sdevotion to the Auxiliary, tearsbegan to flow down Bette and herdaughters, Kathy and Kerri Ann’sfaces. One can only imagine thememories Bette recalled as she wasreminded of the moment thatchanged her life forever.

It was 1952. Bette and her hus-band, Eli, were stepping throughthe doors of the Chicago Interna-tional Livestock Show; strollingpast the rich black, beautifulAngus cattle, Bette transformedfrom city girl to ranch wife. It wasthen that Bette realized she wantedthe Angus way of life for her fam-ily.

The Chicago International wasalso where Bette met a small groupof energetic women who asked herto join the American Angus Auxil-iary. Without hesitation, Betteagreed and became a guiding lightwith her quiet, steady demeanorand wisdom, which kept the Aux-iliary on the right path for decades.

Bette served as an Auxiliary of-ficer for three years before resign-

ing due to her mother’shealth. Ten years later, in1993, Bette returned tolead the organization.During her presidency, she, along with Angusenthusiasts from acrossthe country, entertainedinternational visitors dur-ing the World AngusForum in Rapid City, S.D.Since that time, Bette hasserved as chairman andmember of several Auxil-iary committees.

Together in their 62years of marriage, Betteand Eli built the historicE Bar V Angus Ranch. The couple was inducted into theAmerican Angus Association®’sAngus Heritage Foundation in1999 and received the NebraskaAngus Association Pioneer Pro-ducer Award in 2006. Eli was de-voted leader in the beef industry. He was a lifetime member of theAmerican Angus Association andserved on its Board of Directors.During his two terms, he was in-strumental in establishing the Cer-tified Angus Beef®program. Elialso helped organize the South-west Nebraska Angus Associationand served as Secretary-Treasurerfor several years.

Bette’s constant drive and pas-sion for the Angus business is in-stilled in her children, as well. Herdaughters, Kathy Marie (Louis)Dubs, Billings, Mont.; Kerri Ann(Steven) Kliewer, Henderson, Neb.;and the late Christine Sue VotawVinton received Auxiliary Scholar-ships in 1970, 1973 and 1977. And,Bette was “The Queen Mother” ofboth the 1973 and 1977 Miss Amer-ican Angus. Her daughters alsoserved as Nebraska AngusQueens, and Block and Bridle

Queens at the University of Ne-braska.

Without Bette knowing, Eli andAuxiliary members were sketchingout a plan for her to receive the2012 Distinguished Woman of theYear Award. Although Eli passedaway before Bette could accept thehonor, she knew Eli was with herin spirit.

While Bette stood on the Auxil-iary Breakfast stage sharing hergratitude for the DistinguishedWoman of the Year Award, shebegan to describe her marriage tonot only her husband, but also tothe beef industry: “Thank you forthis award, it was my family’sprivilege to be in the Angus busi-ness. We never had anything elsein mind besides promoting Angusbeef.”

The American Angus Auxiliaryconsists of individuals interestedin the welfare of the Angus breed. Its members work to provide edu-cational activities for junior Angusmembers, such as scholarship pro-grams, awards and competitions. For more information about theAmerican Angus Auxiliary, vis-itwww.angusauxiliary.com.
