On the Job…

EditorialEditorialBy: Suzy Hebbert, NAA Secretary

This is truly a great time to be inthe cattle business with unprece-dented markets for all classes of cat-tle -- feeder calves, fat cattle, evencull cows and weigh up bulls arebringing record dollars. To continuethat trend in your herd, check outthe many sale listings of our mem-bership on page 26 to find that muchneeded herd sire for your herd. Itappears that cattle herd expansion isbeginning and finding those bulls tomeet your herd needs will be a pri-ority this year.

There is a new cattle herd healthregulation in Nebraska that affectsall cattle producers, regardless ofwhat area of the state you reside in.LB 423 was passed by the legislaturelast spring and took effect in Sep-tember of 2013. The law deals withreporting requirements for cattleproducers follow-ing a positive di-agnosis ofTrichomonaisiswithin theirherds. Pleasecheck out the no-tice from our stateveterinarian Dr.Dennis Hughes,DVM on page 23.

My Fellow Breeders

By: Dru Uden, NAA President

It is sale time again at TCRanch and we have just fin-ished our catalog. Some of

you breeders have already hadyour sales and I trust they haveall gone well as it looks to be avery good year for sales in thecattle industry. In fact, I believethat during the next few years, the cattle business will enjoysome of the best times we haveever seen. It is in good timessuch as these that it is of vitalimportance that we as breedershold ourselves and our prod-ucts to the highest standards.

Here in southern Nebraskawe have seen some unusualweather for calving season.Calving is definitely one of myfavorite times of the year. See-ing the new calf crop is excitingand thinking about how this

generation will move our breedforward is always encouraging.

Spring is right around thecorner and soon our thoughtswill turn to breeding seasonwith a new set of challengesand rewards. I congratulatethose of you who have hadgood sales and hope those ofyou with upcoming sales havegood luck.

Until next time, I wish all ofus plentiful moisture to bringknee-high grass to the pastures.

Regards,

Dru Uden

Dear fellow Angus

breeders…

American Angus Board UpdateAmerican Angus Board UpdateBy: Arlen Sawyer, AAA Board Member

Iam sure that you will receivethis publication right afterour quarterly American

Angus Association board meet-ing in St. Joe Feb. 18 – 21, so Iapologize in advance for miss-ing the Nebraska Cattlemen’sClassic and not being able to re-port to you at this time aboutthe board meeting. Hopefully Iwill catch up on board meetinghighlights in the next issue.

At this time I’d like to reiter-ate that the American AngusAssociation is there for the ben-efit of you the membership. You should and have de-manded prompt and courteousservice from the association, and that service is now secondto none in the industry.

You should also demandthat the assets amassed by themembership over the years, i.e.the database and most reliableEPDs in the industry, should beexclusive only to the membersof the American Angus Associa-tion. Even though we are cur-rently experiencing record cattleprices in all sectors of the indus-try, this isn’t a time to makethese assets available to all.

The association providestools for us to use to maintainour competitive edge over allother competitors. Of mostvalue to our customers is theconfidence they have in ourdatabase, EPDs and $Values

Miss Nebraska Angus2013-2014

Princeton, NE is home to thisyear’s Nebraska Angus Queen,Maci Lienemann, and Angus cattlehave been an influence in her lifeas long as she can remember. Oneof her earliest childhood memoriesis serving as “Host” for an im-promptu Angus cattle show in herliving room. “Well, we have a realnice group of cattle to look at heretoday. They are nice, big, andblack,” she announced from herLittle Tykes table in the livingroom as her younger brother,Taylon, entered the “show ring”leading their Black Lab puppy, appropriately named Angus.

Angus cattle and involve-ment for the Lienemann’s hasalways been a family affair. Her Dad Trevor, is a CPA byschooling, but a cowboy atheart. Her Mom, Torri OrtizLienemann, has her PhD in Spe-cial Education, and is the Assis-tant Special Education Directorand District Learning Coordinatorat Norris School District. Maci isthe oldest of four children, with ayounger brother and two youngersisters. Her brother, Taylon, is asenior, and her sisters, Sydni andSkylar are a sophomore and 8thgrader respectively, all at the Nor-ris School district south of Lincoln. All four of the Lienemann childrenare actively involved in their fam-ily cattle operation (Lienetics), andeach of them have their own indi-vidual Angus herds as well. Maciand her siblings are also very ac-tive in the Nebraska and NationalJunior Angus Associations.

If one word can be used to de-scribe Maci, that word would be“active”. A sophomore at the Uni-versity of Nebraska-Lincoln, she isinvolved in many organizations andholds various leadership positions.Such as UNL Animal Science Stu-

dent Ambassador; Nebraska BeefIndustry Scholars; UniversityHonor’s program; UNL Alpha Zeta– Agricultural Honor Societywhere she serves as Student Repre-sentative. She’s a member ofAlpha Omicron Pi sorority whereshe serves as a Leadership Councilmember; a volunteer group leaderfor NebraskaYouthBeef

Lead-ers Sympo-sium (NYBLS); UNL Block &Bridle/Collegiate Cattlemen; FFAAlumni; Collegiate Farm Bureau;and she’s a student member of Na-tional Cattlemen’s Beef Associa-tion & Nebraska Cattlemen. In thepast she has been involved in Ne-braska FFA and holds the FFAAmerican degree, she was StateFFA Vice President and traveled toArgentina as a participant in the In-ternational Leadership Seminar forState Officers. Currently, Maci isserving as President of the Ne-braska Jr. Angus Association andlast summer she was selected asAmerican Angus Association Am-bassador.

As a young child, Maci wantedto be a cattle showman and a leaderin the Nebraska Jr. Angus Associa-tion. She idolized young ladieslike her neighbor, Kourtney Nel-son, a past Nebraska Angus Queenand supreme showman. To Maci, young women like Kourtney, whowere both leaders in and out of theshow ring, projected strength andcharacter. These influences havebeen some of the driving forcesthat have helped Maci to becomethe strong, confident, capable

leader she is today.

Maci’s future goals and aspi-rations are greatly influencedby her desire to improve prac-tice, products and policies sur-rounding the beef industry. An academic goal is to obtainan advanced degree in animalscience research, specificallyfocusing on advancing genet-ics within the livestock in-dustry. She also hasleadership aspirations relatedto the beef industry, specifi-cally in the near future to earn

a position as a National JuniorAngus Association board mem-

ber and also earn her GoldAward. She hopes all of her activ-ities and participation in various or-ganizations will allow her to beultimately influential within thebeef industry, her lifelong passion.Maci is honored to be serving theNebraska Angus Association as theQueen and she will always repre-sent the Angus breed to the best ofher ability.

country visiting with Angusbreeders and commercial cattle-men, especially those in lowrainfall areas such as the Ne-braska Sandhills, I’ll inevitablyfield a question about the $ENvalue published by the Ameri-can Angus Association.

First of all, what are the $Val-ues ($W, $B, $EN, etc)? Mostsimply stated, the $Value In-dexes are bio-economic selec-tion indexes, which of coursebegs the question, “what’s a se-lection index?” Selection in-dices in general are used tosimplify genetic selection deci-sions by incorporating multipletraits into one number, allowingfor simultaneous change inthose traits through the use onone, easily-interpreted numberreported in dollars. The Angus$Values specifically take into ac-count the outputs considered onthe revenue side of the profitequation, but they also considerthe input, or expense, side asso-ciated with the productionphase of interest. The $Valuesincorporate both genetic com-ponents (EPDs) and economicterms relevant to feedlot per-formance, carcass merit andcow-calf production.

Before using any selectionindex in your breeding deci-sions, it’s really important tounderstand the traits underly-ing the index. If the trait EPDs

used in the computation of theindex are not those that are im-portant for the production goalsand needs of your ranch, usingthem as a selection tool may notyield the desired result.

So let’s take a look at $W andits related pre-weaning index,$EN.

What is $EN?$EN is specialized index

which accounts for savings infuture daughters due to theiranticipated lactation and main-tenance energy requirements. Alarger value is more favorablewhen comparing two animals

as it’s an indicator of more dol-lars saved on feed expenses.• Milk EPDS• Mature Cow size EPDS(Mature Weight and MatureHeight)• Depending on the accu-racy and availability of maturesize EPDs, the correspondingyearling measurements may beused because of their high ge-netic correlation with maturecow traits. What is $W?$W is the other $Value gearedtoward preweaning perform-ance and maternal traits of thecow herd. In addition to eco-nomic and energy requirementassumptions $W includes thefollowing EPDs:

• Birth weight• Weaning weight• Milk• Mature cow size EPDS(Mature Weight and MatureHeight)• Depending on the accu-racy and availability of maturesize EPDs, the correspondingyearling measurements may beused due to their high geneticcorrelation with the same traitsin the mature cow. You’ll notice that the Milk andMature cow size features of$EN are also included in the $Windex. So, why both indexes? In some variable environmentswith limited feed resources, ex-treme negative values for $ENmay be undesirable. However,

caution must be used becausecontinued selection for high, positive $EN without properbalance on some type of calfoutput (WW, YW, etc) couldlead to unnecessarily small ma-ture cows with excessively lowmilk production. With that in mind, it’s impor-tant to re-emphasize that $W in-cludes all of the math associatedwith $EN, but also incorporatesappropriate focus on calfgrowth. Since many commer-cial operations still rely on sell-ing weaned calves as the majorrevenue source, we can’t losesight of the importance of out-puts as well as inputs in a bal-anced breeding program.

SELECTION PRESSUREAND HOW IT AFFECTS

AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION EPD’S by Tonya Amen, American Angus

Association, Genetic Service DirectorI had the pleasure of attend-

ing the your annual meeting inKearney back in early Decem-ber and visiting with NebraskaAngus members about the newthings happening with regardto Angus genetics. We dis-cussed a variety of topics, in-cluding: • updates to the Association’sAngus $Value index assump-tions and genomic recalibrationincluded in the December 6,2013, EPD release• background on simple ge-netic inheritance and geneticconditions• enhancements to reportsprovided to MaternalPlus® par-ticipants• adoption and use of Gene-MaxTM in high percentageAngus commercial cattle

All of these topics center ondeveloping new and exciting se-lection tools for Angus breedersand commercial users of Angusgenetics. Over the years, devel-oping these tools has allowedyou to make genetic directionalchange in traits of economic im-portance.

It’s important to note that se-lecting for change in one traitdoes not occur in a vacuum, and is often accompanied bychange in other genetically cor-related traits. Sometimes thischange is desirable and some-times it is not, but regardless it

can be tracked by looking at ge-netic trend over time in the vari-ous traits of importance.Genetic trend is simply comput-ing the average EPD by animalbirth year. This allows us to fol-low the trend over time, whichcan be presented in a table ordepicted graphically.

The various weight traits forwhich the American Angus As-sociation publishes EPDs are al-ways of keen interest tocattlemen and you’ll see genetictrend for several of them in thegraphic below. From birthweight to mature cow weight, all of the weight traits havemoderate to high genetic corre-

lations (ranging from .39 forbirth weight and mature cowweight to .74 for weaningweight and mature cowweight). This means that selec-tion for increased weaningweights should be accompaniedby increased weights at everyother stage as well. In the caseof cattlemen operating in envi-ronments with limited feed re-sources, the high correlationbetween weaning weight andmature cow weight may be un-desirable due to the resourcesrequired to support larger ma-ture cows.

Closer scrutiny of the genetictrend table reveals that the line

representing mature weight isnot as steep as those for wean-ing and yearling weights, which indicates that selectionpressure has been placedagainst mature weight whilesimultaneously selecting forincreasing weaning and year-ling weights. Even thoughthere is a strong positive ge-netic correlation betweenweaning weight and matureweight, Angus producers havebeen able to identify uniqueanimals that combine highgrowth and moderate maturesize.

TRICHOMONIASISLINCOLN – As cattle producersconduct breeding soundnessand Trichomoniasis testing thisyear, State Veterinarian Dr. Den-nis Hughes would like to re-mind producers of theirresponsibilities, if they have apositive Trichomoniasis diagno-sis within their herd.

According to Hughes, LB 423was passed last spring and tookeffect in September. The statutehas some specific reporting re-quirements for producers whohave a positive Trichomoniasis

“Trichomoniasis can be dev-astating to a herd, and whileowners of affected herds gener-ally don’t like to talk about it,communication allows otherproducers to reinforce goodbiosecurity measures,” said Dr.Hughes.
