Secretary/Manager of our Associa-tion. Happy 75 Years Nebraska AngusAssociation. You can check out morephotos and highlights on our “TourRoundup” is on pages 11-15 in thisissue.

We held our Open Angus Show atthe State Fair at the beginning of Sep-tember. While it was somewhat dis-appointing that our first ever ROVshow fell a few head shy of theneeded cattle shown (we will be pro-bationary status for next year’s show),the exhibitors still earned their pointsand we know we have some work cutout for us to get those ROV numbersback up where they need to be.Thanks to all of our Nebraska Boardmembers who traveled to Grand Is-land for the show and their help inrunning the show smoothly, as thefirst animal entered the show ringpromptly at the 10 a.m. start time. Ialso appreciate it that you made thetrip in order for us to hold our boardmeeting following the show.

Our late summer events con-cluded with our Husker Harvest Daysexhibit Sept 15-17th. We had sevenmembers exhibit cattle. As usual, theweather plays a big part of the show, last year it was excessive rain and thisyear we encountered heat, dust andwind. Visitor numbers through thetent were very good the first two daysof the show and the final day wascooler and relaxing as we thoroughlyenjoyed the camaraderie of our mem-bership. See the HHD wrap-up onpage 9.

Finally, mark your calendars forthe Annual Meeting and Banqueton December 5th, in Kearney at the

Holiday Inn. Watch our website andyour membership newsletters for fur-ther details. Also check out our saleand events calendar for upcomingmember production sales.

Until next time...

EditorialEditorialBy: Suzy Hebbert, NAA Secretary

Here we are in Fall again, har-vest season for many of us.My Grandmother frequently

said, “The hurrier I go, the behinder Iget”. As a child, I often wonderedwhat she meant. I now believe thatshe was trying to share with me…takeyour time and treasure each day.Enjoy life, especially in your dailytasks. See the colors as our seasonschange, take pleasure in weighingthose heavy calves as you see lastyear’s genetic selections cross thescales, value the “smells and sounds ofFall”. Slow down, the faster you go,the more chance there is for mistakesand accidents. Please, please be carefulwhile you toil in your daily activities, whether is in working of your cattle, gathering the bounty from your fieldsor traveling to school and communityevents.

I have just completed one of thebusiest six weeks of preparation andactivities for our Association in a longtime. Our annual tour was August 21-22nd. But the weeks prior to that werejust as hectic as the two day tour. Mytremendous thanks to Trevor Liene-mann and Brett Weers, this year’s co-chairs for the tour. They began withan initial organizational meeting inlate February with a vision for success.Four meetings and several monthslater, a tour with a memorable 75thAnniversary recognition celebrationwas held that makes me proud to bean Angus breeder in the our state. Myappreciation also to all of the partici-pants who put their breeding pro-grams on display. Lots of work, sweatand dreams were available for view-ing by all of our tour goers this year.

Tom Burke, Angus Historian pro-vided a timely trip down memory lanepertaining to how the Angus breed ar-

rived at today’s success. The na-tional directors and our past stateleaders were and are risk takersand more times than not, theymade the right decisions and votes(often very close votes) to bringand keep Angus in the forefront. Iwish you all could have been thereto witness this. It definitely was oneof the highlights of my tenure as

Dutch Dethlefs evens out the wood chips in oneof the exhibit pens during setup.

FFA Chapters visit Husker Harvest Days eachyear. Here, chapter members stop by one of thepens to check out the cow/calf pair on display.

Dick Hollman served as our “Grillmaster” during this year’s event.

The flagpole and “Old Glory” was a new addi-tion to out exhibit this year.

Tim Clarke chats with a Husker Harvest Daysvisitor about his bull on display.

Craig Dethlefs talks with visitor about his bullcalves on exhibit in this year’s tent.

Exhibitors at this year’s show were: Front Row L to R – Sondra & Dick Hollman, Hollman Angus at Hallam; Dutch Dethlefs, DethlefsAngus Ranch at Ravenna; Tim Clarke, RCA Cattle Co, at Nebraska City. Back Row L to R –

Gary Dethlefs, Carl Dethlefs & Sons, Rockville; Clint Hebbert, E.D. Angus, Ashby; Kevin Glause,Lazy Black Diamond Ranch, Palmer; Jay Nordhausen, AAA Regional Mgr; Travis Walters,

Walters Angus, Talmage; Craig Dethlefs, Dethlefs Angus Ranch, North Platte.

This year’s Husker Harvest Days weather was in stark contrast to 2014. While rain was the big story of 2014,this year’s weather was hot, dry and windy. That didn’t seem to affect the number of visitors to our tent on Lot 1058.Foot traffic was heavy for Tuesday and Wednesday. Slightly fewer visitors walked through the tent on Thursday but itwas still a good day. A wide variety of cattle and bloodlines impressed the visitors to our tent. Members who displayedcattle were: Carl Dethlefs and Sons, Rockville; Dethlefs Angus Ranch at Ravenna and North Platte; E D Angus,Ashby; Hollman Angus, Hallam; Lazy Black Diamond Angus Ranch, Palmer; RCA Cattle Co. at Nebraska City; and Walters Angus, Talmage.

Nebraska Angus Tour SpotlightTTHEHE TTOUROUR ,,

A SA SUMMARYUMMARY

The 2015 Nebraska Angus Tourgoes in the books as one of the mostsuccessful tours in recent memory. From the social the evening before thetour began, through the stops, the cat-tle, efforts from participants, the tourfacilities, and everything in between…it was a wonderful and fun event. Each stop was special, had somethingnew and/or different, and the celebra-tion of our 75 years as an associationwas memorable. Thanks to all whomade our tour sensational. And ofcourse the food was fabulous.

Tom Burke, Angus Historian pre-sented a wonderful program of thehistory of Angus cattle, and the pro-gression, the decisions that allowedthe breed to grow. For example, thedecision to allow registration of calvesthrough the use of artificial insemina-tion by Out of Herd Sires with the pur-chase of an A.I. service certificate; andthe use of semen from bulls that aredeceased. The decision to establishCertified Angus Beef and the subse-quent decisions to keep “growing thebrand”. The establishment of AngusGenetics, Inc, the use genomics andenhanced DNA tests to select the bestof your herd. The founding of AngusMedia, and the growth of the market-ing of our memberships, our breed ge-netics and the ability to “tell ourstory”.

Since 1940, the Nebraska Angus As-sociation, has been there every year, supporting their members, holding fu-turities, state shows, Pen of threeshows, Elite Female sales and consign-ments to grow the breed and ourmembership. We’ve had leaders whowere risk takers on some ideas, peoplewho have listened, built consensusand grew the breed. We are successfulbecause of the sum total of all of theideas, decisions, policies and by-lawsthat were established. To all of themwho brought us to where we aretoday…Thank You. NJAA ANNOUNCES NEW AGE RULE FOR COMPETITION

Angus youth who are eight years old can now exhibit cattle at Angus-sponsored shows.

Eight-year-old members of the National Junior Angus Associ-ation (NJAA) are now eligible to show at Angus-sponsoredcompetitions across the country. juniors who are eight years old on Jan. 1 to be eligible to com-pete at our nationwide shows,” says Jaclyn Clark, Associationdirector of events and education. The NJAA sponsored more than 50 junior shows during the

past year, involving nearly 5,000 Angus youth. According to thenew rule, an exhibitor’s birthdate must fall between Jan. 1, 1995,and Dec. 31, 2007, to compete and be either a junior, regular orlife member of the American Angus Association.Major NJAA-sponsored competitions include the Mid-At-

lantic Junior Angus Classic, Western Regional Junior AngusShow, Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show, Atlantic Nationals,Northwest Preview, the All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurityand the National Junior Angus Show. However, the Association cannot guarantee this will occur at
