1) Avicii – “Wake Me Up”

Establishing shot – the establishing shot represents the setting to the narrative within the music video to set an atmosphere and mood.

Point of View – the pov shot is used in this video to represent judgment from people from the outside looking in.

This shot uses a close up of a symbol that had a very important symbol to this video and song.

This shot uses a depth of field to show the characters admiration to the women passing by by enhancing her features as if she were more important.

This shot uses a panning shot at a low angle to show a different view of the city as if it is newer than the other by using a more unique view point than the other.

Mid shot – this shot is used to only display the two character from their torso up

Throughout the whole video there are the same angles of shots used, using the locations, settings and props however, they are commonly used to represent a different situation: sad compared with happy.

The costumes and props used within this video is used symbolically – representing society and anti society. The characters from the small farming community where simple and stereotyped farm wear whereas, with the help of camera shots and angles, the two young characters are judged by their differences.

The video quickly changes to another change in costume where she wears more colourful and unique clothing compared to the rest.

These two screenshots represent a difference in facial expression; in the first she seems bored and unhappy. However in the second, she is liberated and happy.

2) Bastille– “Pompeii”Establishing shot – the establishing shot is used to set a mood for this video by placing a person standing alone on the top of a rundown building.

This scene within the music video uses a combination of the match-on-action and a match cut where the scenes are edited together to follow the character as he is walking down the stairs.

A close up is used to convey emotion through facial language to the viewers to dramatize the theme within the video.

This scene uses a handheld camera shot where it moved erratically as if it were someone running with the camera to show the frantic feeling within this video.

Mise – en - scene

Through the video the theme sticks generally with a dark, demonic city by using less lighting and darker props and costume.

3) Zara Larrson– “Never Forget you”

This longshot is used with a POV angle from the height of a young child to give the video a childish vibe towards the video.

This is a long shot used to present the location in which the video is being filmed as well at the atmosphere.

This mid shot is used at the very beginning of the video showing the singer from the waist up which gives a setting and mood to the video.

This shot uses an establishing shot of where the majority of the video takes place. It is used to give effect to the video.

This is a close up shot used to frame the child’s face to draw effect to the atmosphere within the video by highlighting the young girl’s facial expressions.

This over the shoulder shot is used to view what the child is able to see i.e. her imaginary friend.

This two shot is used to display two characters and is typically used to establish conversation or a relationship.

Mise – en - scene

In this scene, the props are used greatly; the child is walking past the children’s play swings as if she were not interested.

The video is based greatly around the costume that it uses because it begins with a very young child of about 8 years old who is shown throughout the video at various ages. They are shown to be gradually growing with the actress which gives the video a theme of love, loss and peace.

This shot expresses a childish side to the child by giving her facial expressions in a playful manner.

This shot uses a child’s pink room which would be generally associated with a little girl and by using this stereotype, the video is setting a mood straight away.

The ‘imaginary friend’ used in this music video is a creature made with low quality make up – created to look like a ‘beast’ however it is used in a friendly way. This might be because they are displaying a child’s innocent view of the world.

Evaluation

After watching and deconstructing the three music videos, I discovered a number of shots, angles and mise-en-scene I could consider in my video. Avicci’s music video to ‘Wake Me Up’ includes various features that have inspired me to include in my own video. These includes the costume change between the dull farm clothing to modern rocker clothing and I believe I could use this when switching the theme within my video about cyber bullying. From a depressed and blue kind of feeling to an inspiring ‘Fight’ kind of feeling.

All three videos use a different tone of lighting within their videos; the first being dull to vibrant, the second being dark because of it’s relation to both the night and demons, and the third being dark and blue because it represents the world that goes on around them while her love for her imaginary friend is still present.

I Bastille’s ‘Pompeii’ video, I liked the way the camera shot’s were taken when he was running away from the demons he believed were chasing him this gave a frantic and unique effect to the shot which I hope I am able to apply to my own video for example I could have a character running and this kind of shot would fit in well with the theme to the video.
