ABATHEMBUKing Buyelekhaya Dalindye-bo’s son, Azenathi (23), is the right personto take over the kingship if his father goesto jail, the king’s aunt claims.

NongenileMadlaminiNyoka is the young-er sister of Buyelekhaya’s mother and shewas present during the initial stages of Buy-elekhaya and No-College’s marriage.No-College is the mother of Prince Azena-

thi who is fromNgqamakhwe and is a judge.Nyoka said there was no question about

Azenathi’s birth and he was the right manto take over his father’s reins as he was hisrightful son, whom Dalindyebo got in mar-riage (ngumntwana wokhukho).Nyoka was responding to the anti-Dal-

indyebo camp, which disputed Azenathi’sclaim to take over the kingship, stating that

his birth status was questionable and theywanted to check rigorously if he was not con-ceived by his mother before marriage. The group, who call themselves the Ngan-

gelizweRoyal Family, dismissed thenomina-tion of Azenathi as the next AbaThembuking. At a meeting last Sunday (October 11) at

Bumbane Great Place, AmaDlomo agreedthat Azenathi should take over if his fatherfailed in his battle in the ConstitutionalCourt to avoid serving 12 years in jail.Despite that pronouncement, the Ngengel-

izwe Royal Family maintained that it was itwhich had a full mandate to debate, amongother things, tradition and customs associat-ed with the kingdom of AbaThembu, includ-ing succession.Nyoka said they could argue about other

things, but Azenathi becoming his father’ssuccessor was the right thing.

“All the Dlomos know that even those whoare trying to dispute the issue of the kingshipknow the truth and custom cannot change.Azenathi is the person to take the throne.”She said Azenathi’s mother had been wel-

comed by AmaDlomo as a wife of theirs andshe had never come there pregnant. She hadbecome pregnant when she was already thewife of Buyelekhaya.“She carried the spear of welcoming in the

royal house and all the necessary measurestook place to welcome her home and Azena-thi was born,” Nyoka said.King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo’s fate will

depend on the decision of the ConstitutionalCourt following the judgment of the SupremeCourt of Appeal which gave him 12 years’ im-prisonment for crimes including arson, as-sault with intent to cause grievous bodilyharm, culpable homicide and defeating theends of justice.

IN an attempt to end the senseless killing ofpolice officers, the police in the Mthatha clus-ter conducted a prayer service at the Multi-Purpose Centre in Ngangelizwe last Thurs-day.

The police were joined in the prayer serviceby various faith organisations, which ap-pealed to God to send His holy spirit so thatthe killing of police officers would come to anend.

The prayer was a response to last year’s sta-tistics on police killings, which showed that 63officers nationwide had been killed on duty.Of those 63, 12 occurred in the Eastern Cape.

King Sabatha Dalindyebo mayor Nonkoliso

Ngqongwa was among the dignitaries who at-tended the event.

In her address, Ngqongwa said the whole na-tion needed to talk to God to stop the senselesskilling of police officers throughout the coun-try because they were the protectors of socie-ty.

She sent words of condolence to the familiesof the victims, saying their blood would waterthe freedom from crime which was comingsoon. “Like it or not, we cannot hand over thiscountry to the criminals. The communitiesneed to work with the police in reporting thecriminals among them.

“We need to support them because the hopesof our society are on their shoulders,” Ngqong-wa said.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-Gen-

eral Celiwe Binta said that by conducting suchcampaigns they were trying to mobilise com-munities to join hands in the fight against po-lice killings.

She said the Eastern Cape was big, but thepolice were trying their level best to reducecrime throughout the province.

“For instance, recently in crime reductionstatistics we were number two,” Binta said.

She revealed that they had established strat-egies to train their members to use the toolsthey had available to protect themselves.

Binta agreed that some police officers disap-pointed them because they also became in-volved in criminal activities.

“We don’t smile for such officers. They willharvest the results of being involved in crimi-nality,” she said.

IN an attempt to improve environmentalmanagement, the Wildlife and EnvironmentSociety of South Africa (Wessa) has forged apartnership with schools throughout SouthAfrica with the introduction of a programmecalled Wessa Eco-Schools.

The aim of the programme was to encour-age schools to improve their environmentalmanagement, said Andiswa Mbanjwa ofWessa. This message was expected to spreadto the surrounding communities and get peo-ple really “caring for the earth”.

Wessa worked recently with Qumbu Vil-lage Junior Secondary School teachers andpupils to clean up the Mzeke River.

The river has been neglected by the commu-nity and as a result the water is no longer con-sumable.

Wessa, teachers and pupils spent an entireday cleaning the river banks, finding aban-doned animal carcasses and many other-things that were dirtying the environmentand spoiling the beauty of the river.

The provincial Department of Water andSanitation contributed plastic bags, glovesand rakes. Teacher Nombulelo Lokhwe saidthe river’s poor state was due to the lack of

a proper refuse collection strategy and the ab-sence of public toilets.

She questioned the Mhlontlo municipalityabout its support in this matter.

“The municipality needs to take an activerole, by building public toilets or perhaps afence around the river,” she suggested.

She expressed gratitude to Wessa and all in-volved in the initiative.

“There should more programmes like thisuntil the whole of society gets its hands dirtyin cleaning the environment.”

She said the pupils had learnt a lot in thisinitiative and the importance of caring for theenvironment would remain in their minds.

AMAXHOSA King Zwelonke Sigcausays he is not happy about how he istreated by the government.

Sigcau gave voice to his pain duringthe visit of National Assembly speakerBaleka Mbete at Nqadu Great Place inWillowvale recently.

He said his area was rich in titaniumand granite and they wanted these tobe processed in their area to create jobopportunities for their children.

“One of the things that you must notforget is education because there is noone who can take away your educationqualifications,” Sigcau said.

“That is why we always want thebest education for our children.”

He said President Jacob Zuma mustappoint someone to speak with himwhen he had problems because itseemed that the Department of LocalGovernment and Traditional Affairswas not treating him in a good way.

He said that when he was invited tovisit kings in other provinces, the de-partment always told him there was nomoney to book flights and accommoda-tion for him.

Sigcau said the government muststop appointing just anyone to be theMEC for the Department of Local Gov-ernment and Traditional Affairs.

According to Sigcau, the MEC mustbe chosen from among the traditionalleaders because they knew about tradi-tional affairs.

“You just appoint any person youlike to be the leader of Traditional Af-fairs, even if he or she knows nothingabout our issues and how we work, and this is killing this department,”Sigcau said.

PARENTS of autistic children have called onthe Department of Education to build a schoolin Mthatha to accommodate their children asat present they have to travel long distances tofind such schools.

Autisticpupilsareeasilydistractedandneedspecial classes, with one-on-one teaching.

The only government school of this type inthe Eastern Cape is the Quest Special Schoolin Port Elizabeth.

Nomaza Nkohla, the leader of the OR TamboAutism Spectrum Disorder task team, said theabsence of a school for the autistic in Mthathawas badly affecting children in the area whohad this disorder.

She said the Quest school in Port Elizabethwas always full, which resulted in a long wait-ing list and diminished the chances of autisticchildren getting a decent education.

She said the school in Port Elizabeth neededpeople who could afford to go there, but thosein the rural towns of Transkei found it difficultto send their children there because of the dis-tance and cost.

Nkohla said they had held meetings with thedepartment and raised the matter.

“We need a government school that will ac-commodate advantaged and disadvantagedchildren who have autism throughout theTranskei.

“And it must have a boarding facility so thatsuch children do not have to travel when theyattend school.

“We would love the school to have an occu-pational therapist, dietitian and speech thera-pist,” she said.

Nkohla called on all parents with autisticchildren to come forward and join the battleto get the school.

“We need to ascertain the number of parentswho have such children and submit it to thedepartment in an endeavour to make our pro-posal strong,” she said.

Bandlakazi Bambeni of Mthatha was thefirst parent to write a letter to the national De-partment of Education appealing to it to builda school in the area.

Bambeni mentioned the distances she had totravel to look for a school in Port Elizabeth forher eight-year-old child.

“Yes there are private schools, but they are

very expensive, about R3 200 a month, and theyare not in Umtata but in East London. Thatmoney is too much, especially for a single par-ent and unemployed person like me”, she said.Express is in possession of e-mails in which

Bambeni communicated with the national De-partment of Education. She was referred to theprovincial department.

Khwezi township in UTA a couple of yearsago. Actually he was a yard-mate.The guy claimed he had been saved and he

prayed about half of the night - even the mid-dle of the night.Okay, we had no problem with that even

though his action was a bit tormenting be-cause he always disturbed us in our slumber. But ke nothing esasingayenza the guy wasaccepted the calling and ethetha nenkosiyakhe. Every weekend he was not in UTA,

stating that he was going to spread the wordof God in other places particularly Idutywa.Okay son of God. You remember we said Godwill reveal if your ways are not as we seewhen you are in front of us.In January we met the man again pushing
