In an effort to resolve issues, Lonmin have now turned to the traditional leaders in the areas where the mine workers are from. Members of the Association of Minework- ers and Construction Union (AMCU) downed tools at Amplats, Implats and Lonmin more than four weeks ago, demanding that month- ly entry-level wages should be more than dou- bled to R12 500. The employers say they couldn’t meet this demand, owing to the current depression and rising operational cost. Although government mediators are ena- bling talks between the employers and the union, the two sides remain poles apart on the wage issue. Happy Nkhoma, Head of Public affairs and Stakeholder at Lonmin, said the meeting was the continuation of consultations they had had with the traditional leaders, since the Marikana massacre in August 2012. “We have been keeping the traditional leaders on the loop since the sad event. We are currently in a dispute with our workers and felt it right to come and talk to their lead- ers to make them see our point and explain the challenges brought about by the strike,” said Nkhoma. Nkhoma added that despite the huge amounts lost by the mines every day since the strike began, families will suffer immensely. Even though the strike is legal, it is a no- work, no-pay strike. Xhosa King, Zwelonke Sigcau, said they ap- preciated the fact that the company had come to engage with them. “We didn’t know what was going on. We were surprised to see our people coming back from the cities, while they were supposed to be at work. People are still reeling from the Marikana incident and we were scared that history might repeat it- self,” said King Sigcau. He said they could on- ly act as mediators once they had heard from both sides. To this end, they are now working on ways to meet with AMCU members. Sonwabile Sihlobo from Qaukeni Great Place also said they couldn’t allow another Marikana incident and that they too were willing to act as mediators. “We plead that the issues must be resolved amicably, with both parties reaching a fair agreement. We also don’t want the families of mine workers to suffer,” he said. WITH just over twomonths since theEasternCape (EC) was introduced to its first everBingo Hall, Ritz Bingo Mthatha Plaza hasseen a steady rise inwalk-ins to their illustri-ous multi-million-rand venue.

Currently, as the only operational BingoHall of the six that were awarded by the ECandGamblingBoard last year, RitzBingoMt-hatha Plaza has contributed significantly tothe provincial fiscus. With tax in Januarystanding on R41 112,whichwas a 39% in-crease from the De-cember contribu-tion which was R24969, growth of Bingoin the province hasbeen shown .Chairman of Ritz

Bingo, Prof Mazibu-ko’s recollections ofthe first month Bin-go was introducedto province werelevelheaded. “Takeup of play on thebingo machines is in the anticipated intro-ductory phase. We have analysed the situa-tion and spoken to guests, and have deter-mined that bingo is anewconcept inMthathaand the generally reported pressure on retailsales impacts on gaming as well,” he said.Whilemost people visitingMthathaduring

the December season were there to mournthe passing of former South African Presi-dent, NelsonMandela, some took an opportu-nity to explore Ritz Bingo Mthatha Plaza.Prof Mazibuko didn’t see their opening pe-

riod as ‘strategic’; instead he shared a viewof empathy. “People came to mourn the pass-ing of former president Nelson Mandela andto attend the funeral. Their attention did notparticularly turn to spendingmoney on gam-ing and other retail activities,” he said.Mazibuko does however see a long-term

tourist attraction opportunity in the ORTambo District.“In the future, however, we expect that the

presence of the final resting place of NelsonMandela, the Mandela Museum and other at-tractions at Qunu will draw tourists to the

area. They may have more leisure time tospend in the bingo hall.”The Ritz Bingo Mthatha Plaza boasts 80

electronic bingo seats with “well advancedplans to expand the operation into a largerfacility within the Mthatha Plaza.” Theseplans depend mainly on the landlord’s devel-opment plan time frames and customer de-mands. The key selling point of the Ritz Bin-go Mthatha Plaza is “great product and highlevels of customer service.”Ritz Bingo is the first Bingo hall to be regu-

lated by the ECGBB. Mazibuko said not onlydo they understandtheir involvementbut they also supporttheir regulation ofthe gaming industry.“The regulations bythe ECGBB providethe right businessenvironment forplanning and invest-ment. The ECGBBhas also respondedtimeously to queries, and there were alsono delays in the li-censing of the

premises or machines” he said.Mr Mabutho Zwane, CEO of the ECGBB,

has been impressed with the contributionsfromRitz BingoMthatha Plaza to the provin-cial fiscus. “The contributions from the gam-bling industry to the province is substantialand ECGBB has a keen interest in its impacton both economic and socio-economic oppor-tunities within our jurisdiction.”“Currently, 48 staff are employed at Ritz

Mthatha Plaza and there is an intention toadd 12 staff when the new premises areready,” said Mazibuko. It is generally statutory that 1% of the Bin-

go halls Gross Gaming Revenue is directedtowards socio-economic development initia-tives. When asked what initiatives the Mt-hatha public can expect in the socio-econom-ic investments, Mazibuko said, “Ritz makesa quarterly cash donation equivalent to 1%of gross gaming revenue to deserving CSIprojects,” said Mazibuko. Currently the Fi-nal Request for Proposal for Bingo Develop-ment in the EC is available and the closingdate is May 14, 2014.

IT was a day filled with joy and possibilitiesfor learners, educators and principals at theSt John’s College when the Deputy Ministerof Public Enterprises, Bulelani Magwanishe, launched a telematics system and handedover mobile science lab kits sponsored by Es-kom.

In his address, Deputy Minister Magwan-ishe urged learners to honour the late strug-gle stalwart, OR Tambo, and to maintain theschool’s high pass rate while also choosingscarce technical careers to break out of thecircle of poverty.“I am confident that our contribution here

today will also add to St John’s goal of beinga centre of excellence in maths and science,”said Deputy Minister Magwanishe.Zolisa Magaqa, the principal of St John’s

College, expressed his delighted appreciationfor the donation.“I must say that Public Enterprises and Es-

kom have done a splendid job. They have con-tributed to the development of Eastern Cape, because if you invest in education, it is an in-vestment for development of the learners, thecommunity, the province and the nation,”said Mr Magaqa. The telematics system is an Information

Communication Technologies (ICT) based in-teractive classroom where learners will re-ceive extra lessons from top teachers and aca-

demics in critical subjects such as maths andscience, from the University of Stellenbosch.“I am excited about what government has

done at our school. The Telematics systemand mobile science lab will help our pupils toexcel in these two challenging subjects,” saida grade 12 learner. The mobile science lab kits will enable

learners to conduct their science experimentsto better understand the field of science andachieve superior quality results.Maths dictionaries are pivotal to providing

learners with formulas and how maths prob-lems could be resolved in a more practicalway. The event formed part of the Department of

Public Enterprises’ Corporate Social Invest-

ment (CSI), that continues to impact positive-ly on the intended beneficiaries and contrib-ute towards the country’s socio-economic de-velopment.Principals, educators and learners from 21

schools in theORTambo district attended thelaunch and career expo from State-OwnedCompanies such as Eskom, Transnet, SAAandDenel for career opportunities, bursaries, scholarships and apprenticeships. This year St John’s College will celebrate

its 105th anniversary and preparations are inprogress to commemorate this great achieve-ment.The school, which has 1700 leaners, is a

Akhanya (boy), Lisakhanya and Aman-dise (girls) Jisa, travelled from Sebeni loca-tion in Ntabankulu to meet with SibongileGwiji (65) who bought them school supplies, including uniforms and other garments.

They were accompanied by their unem-ployed mother, Celiwe Jisa (33) and weretransported by the Department of Social De-velopment’s Spethu Hospital Social worker,Nombeko Nodo.

This was not the first time Gwiji boughtclothes for the triplets.

“I met them at birth at the Nelson Mandelaacademic hospital where I used to work inthe maternity ward and I bought themclothes before they went home from hospi-tal,” said Gwiji.

She also bought them clothes when theyturned 3 years and she did it again this timeat their 6th birthday.

“I am not related to the children and I havenever been to their home, but ever since Isaw them at birth with their unemployedmother, I knew I had to do something,” shesaid.

Nodo said as the department, they assistedthem to get birth certificates to access child-support grants and they also made sure thatthey had transport whenever they were com-ing to Gwiji in Mthatha.

AYANDA MILISSA MADIKIZELA

Who is Nompumelelo Valipathwa?I am the third born out of four children (two boys and two girls).

I am originally fromLurhasini location, studiedmy primary classesat Kwezi Community School and then proceeded to Zimele JuniorSecondary School to finish my junior classes. I obtained my Matricat Zingisa High School in Mthatha.

Where and what did you study?I amcurrentlypursuingaDegree inSocial Sciences atWalterSisu-

lu University.

Why did you choose Gospel music?Gospel develops my soul in many different and amazing ways. It

is my way of praying and communicating with the Almighty God.When I am in a bad space, I relieve my soul by singing.

What kind of a home were you raised at?I was raised by aGod-fearing single parent going to a RomanCath-

olic church at St Paul’s mission in Ngangelizwe. She is a very strictwoman together with my Aunt who raised me. That is where I start-ed with music at my church at the age of 14.

What is a difference between your latest project and the previ-ous one?Well, I have worked with a group of friends frommy church, Nce-

diswa Jim, Mzwanele Tseku, Vuyokazi Rhoshinamba, SiphiwoHemeni and Sibongiseni Matyumza. This one is different becausewe took songs from the Catholic hymn book. There are dance tracks and traditional gospel such as ‘Ntsikana’

and I have sort of introduced these up-coming artists on how to singmy kind of gospel music, which I must say is satisfactory.

When do you think it would be time to give up?I have been trying for more than 10 years and it was not easy,

I kept bouncing back but I kept trying. In this project, God madesure I get someone to assist me in reaching for my dream. So, givingup is not an option.

What message are you conveying with your album? The title is ‘Kepha ngale’ and the message goes to all those who

have lost hope in life. I want them to know that He is always there, all the time and that with God, everything is possible. It’s a 12-trackalbum including the instrumental version of Ingoma kaNtsikana.

Are you married? How many kids?Hahaha….none of the above.

Do you share your room with anyone?I stay at homewithmybig sister and her 13-year-old son at Ikhwezi

Township, Mthatha. Fortunately I have my own bedroom.

THE problem of referees not pitching up to of-ficiate the games at the New Rest Stadium inLusikisiki was not because they had attendeda workshop, but because there is a seriousproblem which South African Football Asso-ciation (Safa) is trying to resolve.

Two weekends ago football lovers, who

came out in numbers to watch their teams, were told that the referees had to attend aworkshop.Last weekend there were again no referees

to officiate the games and they were post-poned again.According to a source, who opted not to be

named, the problem in the SAB CoastalStream league started when there were alle-gations that some referees were corrupt and

were involved in match fixing and refereesfrom Mthatha were used to officiate thegames. That problem was resolved but now it

seems the local referees are boycotting offici-ating at the games.Safa’s League co-ordinator, N Sibhekedu

confirmed that Coastal Streamwere not play-ing because of some problems. These games that were being delayed were
