Dear Parents, As we approach Rosh Hashanah, we look for opportunities to earn zechusim for our family and K’lal Yisrael. Every-thing we do is written down in the דין וחשבון and there is a ספר הזכרונותfor all our actions. On the night of Rosh Hashana, we say so that our יהי רצון שירבו זכויותנוmerits should be increased. MEET OUR NEW FACULTY MEMBERS

Parnes Hayom Learning was dedicated on the following days:

Mrs. Claire Kagel is delighted to be teaching General Studies to the fourth grade boys at YBH. She has 15 years of teaching experi-ence, primarily in the fourth and fifth grades. Mrs. Kagel has an undergraduate degree from NYU and teacher certification from Kean University. She has a terrific husband, four fantastic children and 3 amazing grandchildren. Her hobbies include reading, needlepoint and spoiling her grandsons.

Mrs. Estee Balk teaches 7G Limudei Kodesh. Last year, while residing in West Hartford, CT, she taught at the Hebrew Academy of Greater Hartford and the Hebrew High School of New England, while coordinating West Hartford’s NCSY and JSU. She previously taught at the Manhattan Day School and coordinated the Outreach Fellowship for Aish New York. Morah Balk received her degree in Jewish Studies from Stern College for Women and completed her Master’s in Jewish Education from the Azrieli Graduate School of Education and Administration, both of Yeshiva University. She and her husband live in Englewood where they serve as youth directors at Congregation Ahavath Torah. Mrs. Balk is also a kallah teacher and she enjoys needlepointing, making challah, a good cup of coffee and yoga.

“Pause for a Cause” It is a pleasure to share with you that the 8th grade girls have initiated a Shmiras

Halashon program for the middle school girls as a zechus for a refuah shlaima for Morah Goldberg. On Monday, we launched the program during a meaningful assembly. The girls watched a powerful video clip about the impact of our words and how they are compared to feathers in the wind that can’t be gathered once

scattered. Rabbi Leiner shared divrei chizuk and each class selected a time period during which they will be extra vigilant in guarding their speech. The

assembly culminated with Russy Hirsch and Chaya Karfunkel sharing an inspira-tional story and halacha to focus on this month. Over the course of each month, the 8th grade girls will continue to share halachos to help remind and reinforce

the girls of the importance of refraining from speaking loshon hara. The girls received stickers with a special tefilla to recite asking Hashem to help with our speech and “sweet and sour lips” treats. A special yasher koach to Russy Hirsch and Chaya Karfunkel for overseeing this initiative and creating a beautiful bulle-

tin board with inspirational quotes. May this be a zechus and by purifying our speech help our tefillos be accepted by Hashem as we prepare for the new year. Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern Assistant Principal-Girls’ Division

Before you speak, ask yourself if what you are going to say is: True

Helpful Inspiring

Necessary Kind

If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.

Dear Parents, B’siyata dishmaya, the new school year began with much enthusiasm and excite-ment. It was wonderful to welcome all of our girls to another year of learning at YBH. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new girls who joined the YBH family. At our opening Middle School assembly I shared a beautiful mashal with the girls. There is a famous story about a poor country woman who had no food for her children. One day she found an egg and told her children that all their worries were over. She went on to elaborate on all that they could do with the egg. She would place the egg beneath their neighbor's chicken until it would hatch. She would raise the chicken until it laid more eggs which would hatch into more chickens. She would then sell some of the chickens and purchase a cow which would allow them to have enough money to buy a field and have plentiful eggs, milk and chickens. As she was speaking, the egg fell out of her hand and broke, shattering her dreams. R’ Chaim of Sanz explains that many of us resemble the women in the story. At the start of a new year, we resolve to make many changes and make elaborate plans to rectify all our wrongs. Yet as the days go by, we don't necessarily take the actions planned. Together with our wonderful and dedicated morohs who invest tremendous kochos, in conjunction with the many pro-grams which will be implemented this year, we will help our girls bring their dreams and goals for the new year to frui-tion and grow in their Avodas Hashem. Please ask your daughters about the “backpacks” they received to remind us to “pack up” on mitzvos and maasim tovim as we ride through the year! At YBH, we are committed to the academic and emotional growth of each individual student. At our Professional Development Day, prior to the start of school, YBH staff had the opportunity to partake in a presentation by Rabbi Naftali Hoff. We discussed the philosophy of effective teaching that involves providing students with multiple venues to access the material and acquire the necessary skills. The concept of differentiation through content, process and product was explored. We will follow up at our monthly faculty meetings and have morohs present strategies of differentia-tion they are implementing in their class-rooms to meet the needs of all learners.

It is heartwarming to walk through the hallways, visit classrooms and observe the creative and inspirational lessons being taught. Some examples include Morah Strulowitz’s 6th grade girls engaged in a creative activity to gain a greater under-standing of concepts they are learning in Parshas Terumah. On the blacktop outside their classroom, they used chalk to draw the Mishkan and the keilim. Morah Rab-inowitz (2G) measured the length of the hallway to visualize how big the teivah was as they were learning parshas Noach. Morah Davis’ and Morah Balk’s seventh grade girls collaborated in groups to study different aspects of the Yomim Noraim, i.e. malchios, zichronos and shofros, kriyas haTorah, etc. The final project included a summary of the tefillah, outlining at least three new ideas learned as well as a creative component such as a skit, poem, song or scrapbook to depict the concepts learned. The girls had the opportunity to present what they had researched, which made it all the more meaningful to them. The project allowed the girls to connect to the kedusha of the Yomim Noraim in a more personal way. Yasher koach to Morah Davis for initiating the project. I look forward to continuing to share initia-tives for this year as well as sharing nachas from our girls. Partnership with parents is so important, so please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 973-777-0735, ext.316. Remember that nothing is too small or insignificant when it comes to the success of our girls. Wishing you a wonderful Shabbos and a K’siva V’chasima Tova, Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern Assistant Principal-Girls’ Division

Morah Rosenberg's Kitah Daled is off to a great start! We are completing our first perek in Chumash and aquiring new skills. We are learning how to dissect words in the Chumash by finding the prefixes, suffixes and shorashim to translate them correctly, which I am proud to say the girls are picking up beautifully. We are learning through visuals, acting out the pesukim, song, draw-ing, chanting, and of course through chazara which helps us bring the pesukim to life and retain the information. The girls are also excelling at locating Rashi's Debur Hamaschil and many are able to find them on their own. In Yahadus, we are preparing for Rosh Hashana and learning the halachos and minhagim as well as using the machzor to learn about different tefillos for Rosh Hashana. The girls are creating beautiful Yahadus notebooks and bookmarks and cant wait to share all they are learning! A K’siva V'chasima Tova to all! Mrs. Buckweitz’s Second Grade Class: The second graders got off to a roaring start. To enhance coop-erative learning skills, the children’s first assignment was to pair up and trace each others bodies. To further develop small coor-dination skills, students drew and colored facial and clothing fea-tures on the life size tracings which they subsequently cut out. Several developmental skills, such as the ability to follow direc-tions and writing complete sentences, were addressed during their “All About Me” projects. These class projects were shared on ‘Back to School Night” with families.

Mrs. Samuels Fifth Grade Class: 5GS took their first trip to the science lab this year. In conjunc-tion with our science unit on the four states of matter, the girls created slime that was an example of a Non-Newtonian fluid, which is not a true solid, nor is it a true liquid. They had tons of fun getting "slimey", and reinforcing what they learned in the classroom in a hands on creative lesson.

Meet Our New ECD Morahs

Mrs. Shoshana Rosenzweig, our nursery morah, has a BA in Education and taught 2nd grade Limudei Kodesh in Bet Yakov Ateret Torah in Brooklyn before moving to Eretz Yisroel with her family. A Peek Into Our Week:

ECD HIGHLIGHTS

As

featured at the

Bike-A-Thon:

Mr. Kramer Visits Middle School Classes: Mr. George Kramer, a noted stamp historian and world class stamp collector, came to visit our middle school, as he does annually, to give our students a hands on American history lesson based on his stamp collection and other historical artifacts. Just to name a few items, he showed the students original letters written to Passaic, originally known as Acquackanonk. He demonstrated and explained the history of the dollar bill with its encoded messages on the back and showed original state currency used by the colonists, as well as an original lock of George Washington’s hair. We always look forward to Mr. Kramer’s fascinating and informative visits.
