Menahel’s Message: No Reminders Two of the three Shalosh Regalim, Pesach and Sukkot, are
associated with specific, unique mitzvot corresponding to
seminal events commemorated by the respective holidays.
The matzah of Pesach reminds us of Yetziat Mitzrayim, the
Exodus, while the sukkah of Sukkot commemorates the
ananei hakavod and Divine Providence during B’nei Yisrael’s
desert sojourn. But the third regel, Shavuot, lacks specific
Torah commandments relevant to the event with which
the holiday is most associated, Matan Torah. While
there are many Shavuot minhagim rooted in the Yom
Tov’s celebration of our receiving the Torah, there is no
mitzvah d’oraita to remind us of this most seminal of
events. And for good reason.
Unlike Yetziat Mitzrayim and our subsequent desert
sojourn, Matan Torah, explains Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l,
requires no reminders. We need reminders to
commemorate only events of the past, not those still
experienced at present. The powerful impact of
Hashem’s unprecedented revelation at Sinai is still felt
today, and thus requires no additional commemorative
reinforcement.
The Midrash relates that when G-d spoke at Sinai, the
power of His voice, kol gadol , shook the world’s very core,
but still there was no echo: “kol, v’lo bat kol.” An echo is
generally the result of sound waves deflecting off of a
surface. In the case of Matan Torah, suggests the
Lubavitcher Rebbe zt”l, the words of Hashem were not
deflected, but rather eternally absorbed into the very being
of each and every neshama present at Sinai, including our
own and those of our children.
No reminders necessary.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!

Our Newly Designed Website! There are some people in the world who go about
their lives, quietly and modestly, pitching in when
they see a need, helping without expectation of
recognition, and generally projecting positivity. As
one of the many integral people who make our
yeshiva a “home away from home,” Ariella
Ruderman is such a special individual.
Whether it is
performing as an
integral member of
the yeshiva’s office
staff, walking
various classes to
the playground to
meet their teacher,
accounting daily for
the students taking
part in our lunch
program, or helping teachers create the digital
components of their lessons or special projects, Mrs.
Ruderman is always there for us.
Perhaps you have had the opportunity already to
enjoy ASHAR’s newly configured and updated
website at www.ashar.org. If not, please look at and
admire the site, and the ease with which we are now
able to move from page to page for pictures of
school events, to view ASHAR’s Facebook content, to
access links to Parent Locker, and other information
important for keeping in touch with ASHAR
happenings. This is the result of Mrs. Ruderman’s
hard work and numerous hours of involvement, with
the support of the technical staff at Rusty Brick
(ASHAR parents Ronnie and Barry Schwartz) and
input from ASHAR administrators.
Thank you to all involved, but a special hakarat hatov
to Mrs. Ruderman for her dedication to our yeshiva
and our students, and for being such a positive role
model to us all.
Shabbat shalom and chag sameach.
