■ Some people just can’t seem tobreak with habit, even when taking aholiday.

A colleague overhead an Englishfellow at a camp-site in Switzerlandbemoaning to a captive at the barabout the camp’s lack of ‘proper’ food.

“It’s awful,” he growled. “Theydidn’t even understand when I orderedegg and chips for lunch – they servedme a boiled egg and some thin stripsof potato that when I asked, they saidwere called Pomme Fritz…”

He‘s not alone.Tourists from France expect the

world to speak French. Those fromthe south of the United State areamazed that the few others anywhereelse eat grits.

And Aussies – well don’t get usgoing on the lack of Vegemite in five-star resorts in ‘Vegas and the UnitedNations...

Thomas Cooks, arguably the mostfamous travel company in the world, has been receiving bizarre complaintsfrom tourists ever since 1871 whenMr Cook took 570 people by trainfrom Leicester in the Midlands ofEngland to a temperance rally 15kmaway.

The success of the ventureprompted Cook to start arranging othertrips for all sorts of people – not justfor those who had forsaken alcohol –including an amazing round-the-world tour in 1872 that took 222-daysand for which he charged 200 guin-

■ Clare Valley makers Tim Adamsand Pam Goldsack have launched aninteresting new label they call MrMick after Tim’s friend and mentor, the legendary Mick Knappstein.

And their idea is to emulate Mick’sphilosophy of making wines for ev-eryone to enjoy, with good flavour, re-gional and varietal definition, and af-fordable pricing (the Mr Mick rangeat $15 a bottle includes a Mr MickGela Blanc de Blanc NV named afterMick’s wife, a 2011 Riesling, 2011Rosé, 2009 Shiraz and 2009 CabernetShiraz, and a 2011 Late HarvestRiesling.)

The 2011 Rosé is also a reflectionof Mick Knappstein’s passion for thestyle, and how in the 1960s his nephewTim Knappstein, who’d just qualifiedfrom Roseworthy College, produceda first-ever Rosé for Leasingham un-der Mick’s stewardship, and whichwent on to considerable acclaim.

The 2011 Mr Mick Rosé has asubtle complexity to it, with fruity rasp-berry, strawberry, lychee and whitepeach flavours … a lovely drop as anaperitif or to share with most Asiancuisines.

eas. Today the company manages thetravel plans of 19-million customersannually, and staff patiently deal withthose who don’t quite seem to under-stand how petty are some of theirtravel gripes.

Like the fellow who went back toEngland quite irate about the Medi-terranean tradition of siesta.

“It’s lazy of the local shopkeepersto close in the afternoons,” he wrote.

“I often needed to buy things dur-ing this time. It should be banned.”

Another wrote: “I think it shouldbe explained in the brochure that thelocal stores do not sell proper biscuitslike custard creams or ginger nuts,”while one grizzled: “We booked anexcursion to a water park, but no-onetold us we had to take swimming cos-tumes.”

And when a guest at a Novotel inAustralia complained his soup was toothick and strong, the waitress pointedout he was eating the main coursegravy.

Another: ”On my holiday to Goain India, I was disgusted to find thatalmost every restaurant served curry.I don’t like spicy food at all.”

And how about this bloke. “Thebeach was too sandy… it was not yel-low like the sand in the brochure, itwas quite white.”

And the beach proved a worry foranother family. “No-one told us therewould be fish in the sea. The childrenwere quite startled.”

Then there was the tourist at anAfrican game lodge who spotted anaroused elephant, and complained toCooks that the sight of this rampantbeast ruined his honeymoon by mak-ing him feel “inadequate.”

Maybe he would have got sympa-thy from a woman who bemoaned:“My holiday was totally ruined by top-less sunbathing. My husband spent allday looking at other women.”

Spain seems to cause the Brits themost angst. “We went on holiday toSpain and had a problem with the taxidrivers as they were all Spanish,” oneholidaymaker scribbled.

“And there are too many Spanishpeople,” wrote another. “The recep-tionist spoke Spanish. The food wasSpanish. There were too many for-eigners.”

And the couple who came homewith more than they left with: “Myfiancé and I booked a twin-beddedroom but were placed in a double-bedded room. We hold you respon-sible that I now find myself pregnant. This would not have happened if youhad put us in the room we booked.”

And two trainee hairdressersasked before leaving England if theywould have trouble staying at a par-ticular resort, because the brochurestated “No hairdressers at the resort,”while another lady wrote: “I com-pared the size of our one-bedroomapartment to our friends’ three-bed-room apartment, and ours was signifi-cantly smaller.”

Then there is travelling to and fromyour destination: “It took our Ameri-can friends only three hours to flyhome from Jamaica, but it took us ninehours to England because we are En-glish.”

And finally: “We bought ‘Ray-Ban’ sunglasses for $5 from a streettrader, only to find out later they werefake.”

Some mothers do ‘ave ‘em.
