■ Bizarre as it sounds, when a RoyalMail Ship, the Rhone smashed ontorocks in the Caribbean’s British Vir-gin Islands in 1867, over 200 passen-gers perished – because they’d beentied into their bunks by the crew. Andequally strange, the little island onwhich the Rhone foundered is todayowned by the descendants of thosewho lived there at the time: QueenVictoria was so impressed with theway their forebears had gone to theaid of the stricken vessel, even thoughtheir own homes were being trashedby a hurricane, that she signed own-ership of the island from the Crown tothe islanders in exchange for a simplebag of sea salt per year.

That bag of salt is still sent to En-gland annually to this day. The Rhonewas a 94m steam packet that wasmuch-favoured by the more-wealthyto travel between the UK and the WestIndies: she was just two years old,was considered unsinkable as one ofthe world’s first iron-hulled ships, shecould travel under combined sail andsteam at a then-unthinkable fourteenknots, and even for her Third Classpassengers her cabins were luxurious.

On October 19 1867 the Rhonepulled into Peter Island in the BritishVirgin Islands to top-up her coal bun-kers, and her Master, Captain RobertF. Wooley mentioned to the master ofanother vessel already there, theConway that he was concerned aboutgathering storm clouds and a fast-

■ While Verdelho is still somewhatof a niche wine in this country, it’s avariety that deserves more attentionfor its ability to go so well with food –in its home country of Portugal it’s anatural with seafoods, but you’ll findit equally rewarding with dishes basedon light meats such as pork, veal andchicken.

Mount Eyre in the NSW HunterValley produces a very-moreishVerdelho under its premium ThreePonds label, sourcing fruit from a vine-yard on the sandy loam river flats alongMonkey Place Creek at Broke, andfirst planted in the 1970s.

Its 2011 Three Ponds Verdelhocame from an ideal vintage and is verymuch in the style of PortugueseVerdelho, with plenty of nice tropicaland citrus aromas and flavours.

Enjoy it nicely cold but not toomuch so, pairing with a Sunday brunchseafood platter or barbecued pork, veal and chicken as its fans do backin homeland Portugal.

The Three Ponds 2011 is well-priced at $19.95.

dropping barometer. Although the hur-ricane season was officially long over, within hours both ships were draggingtheir anchors, so the captains decidedto put the Conway’s passengers on the“unsinkable” Rhone that would headto sea to ride-out the storm, while thesmaller Conway would somehowseek safety elsewhere.

When Captain Wooley tried toraise his huge 1350kg anchor itsnared, and he quickly ordered that it,and nearly 100m of massive chain,be jettisoned; it still lays on the harbourfloor today.

And then as he rounded BlackRock Point on Peter Island’sneighbouring Salt Island – and withopen water only 230m away – Cap-tain Wooley found himself headingstraight into 10m waves and hurricanewinds.

His ship was hurled onto rocks withsuch force that a falling spar killedthe First Officer, while CaptainWooley himself was swept overboardand his body never found.

The iron hull of the Rhone splitopen and sea water rushed in, trap-ping all 200-plus passengers in theirbunks where crew had tied them downto prevent injury in the potentially vio-lent seas.

And the moment the cold sea wa-ter collided with the ship’s boilers thatwere cinder-hot from the engines be-ing run at full speed, these boilers ex-ploded in one catastrophic blast, breaking the ship in two and sendingher to the bottom of the sea.

The Rhone had 146 of her own pas-sengers on board but it was not knownhow many had been transferred fromthe Conway, although contemporarynewspaper estimates suggestedaround 100.

Twenty-two crew survived the sink-ing, but just one passenger. Today theremains of the Rhone are consideredthe Caribbean’s finest recreationalwreck dive.

With her stern section laying in just7m of water and her bow at a deeper23m, she is easily accessible, hasmany safe swim-throughs where tim-ber decking and interior walls haverotted away, and her iron frame andparts of her hull now rainbows of coralencrustations and home to myriad ma-rine life.

Bizarrely a silver teaspoon – re-putedly that of the ill-fated CaptainWooley – can still be seen embeddedin the coral, together with massive45kg wrenches used in the engineroom, porcelain items, bottles, andother treasures still uncovered by shift-ing currents, together with occasionalhuman bones, and a brass “lucky port-hole” that remains shiny from diversconstantly rubbing it for luck.

The wreck of the Rhone was alsoused in filming the 1977 thriller, TheDeep. SeaDream Yacht Club has 7-day and a 6-day sailings to dive sitesin the Caribbean in December thisyear, including to the wreck of theRhone.

Prices start from US$2,635pp twin-share (excluding optional scuba fees)and include 5-star dining, open bars, wines with lunch and dinner, 95 crewfor a maximum 112-guests, onboardgratuities and government fees andtaxes.

■ Weather patterns in theAwatere Valley of the Marlboroughregion of New Zealand’s South Is-land can most probably be best de-scribed as ‘harsh’: rainfall is low, sunshine rates are high, the nightsare cool and the area can be al-most constantly hammered by highwinds.

But 2011 delivered a surprise, with the vintage enjoying warmerthan usual days and still-cool nightsthat played right into the hands oflocal winemakers, delivering themfruit that brimmed with varietalflavours, structure and intensity.

At Yealands Estate their 2011Pinot Noir proved particularly ex-citing and a 2011 Pinot Noir Roséthat’s just been released is a lovelydrop with luscious ripe strawberryand raspberry flavours and mouthwatering acidity.

Pay $24.95 and enjoy on its own– or team it up, as we did, with agood Bouillabaisse.
