■ When a group of expatriate Aussiesin Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila decidedthat life without a racetrack just wasn’tthe same as back home, they decidedif they couldn’t get to a racetrack,they’d get a racetrack to them. So they went in search of a bit ofland on which a handful of work horsesfrom their coconut and cocoa planta-tions could race around a temporarytrack one Saturday afternoon, whilethey and their mates enjoyed a flutter. And so became Port Vila KiwanisClub Charity Cup Day, a now-annualrace meeting that, 25 years later, islike no other, attracting 10,000 world-wide spectators. The pioneers of this event laid-out their first racetrack on a localcattle property. The day before theyshoo-ed the cows away, used bam-boo to make everything from the railsto the temporary toilets, and borroweda pile of discarded builder’s scaffold-ing to construct the appropriatelynamed Berocca Stand.

That first meeting in 1986 was ahuge success, and next day, while as-sessing wins, losses and hang-overs,all the bamboo structures were burntto the ground, the Berocca Stand dis-mantled and the cows brought hometo graze. The track site has changed a fewtimes since then, and is now perma-nently located near the Vila abattoirs– which may be an incentive for horsesand riders.

■ Back in the early 1970sLeasingham in the Clare Valley pro-duced a Cabernet Malbec blend un-der a Bin 65 label, a wine that wasrecognised at the time as one ofAustralia’s greatest reds.

It was the creation of the late andextraordinarily creative “Mr Mick”Knappstein, one of whose protégéswas a young and upcomingwinemaker named Tim Adams. To-day Tim and his wife Pam Goldsackhave their own winery in the Clare,and Tim’s 2006 Cabernet Malbecshows just how much he took on boardunder the guidance of “Mr Mick.”

Tim’s first Cabernet Malbec blendwas from the 2003 vintage and hadjust 10 per cent Malbec; he increasedthis to 11 per cent with the 2004 vin-tage, 14 per cent in 2004, and its now20 per cent in the 2006.

That 20 per cent has given this winewonderful complexity on the palate asMalbec does very well in the Clare,and is a natural foil for the Valley’sexceptional Cabernet Sauvignons.This one is loaded with freshblackcurrant, violet and oak flavours;at $30 enjoy with an oxtail beef raguand gnocchi.

The first few years of the Port VilaCup race meeting could best be de-scribed as chaotic: in 1988 the cruiseship Fairstar arrived in town and dis-gorged 1200 passengers, most ofwhom headed for the racetrack forsome heavy betting and heavier drink-ing, totally overwhelming officials,bookies and bars.

So the organisers asked the Aus-tralian Jockey Club in Sydney if itcould lend some stewards to get somesemblance of order into the 1989event. Chief Steward, John Schreckhimself flew up with a couple of off-siders, Terry Bailey and Brett Wright.

It was the start of something bigfor Bailey, who these days is top stew-ard in Victoria and responsible for ev-erything going right for the MelbourneCup. The names of the horses that turnout for Vila’s big race day show thatmuch thought goes into readying themfrom their plantation work to once-a-year racetrack gallopers: WestpacFolly, Boots, Buck, Donkey, Equus,Just A Gigolo, Lick Lick, Neddy andRoots are just some of them.

Schreck and company found thatone horse that would race in Port Vilain 1989 was named Fine Cotton. Butit wasn’t the Fine Cotton of infamousBrisbane 1984 ring-in fame. This FineCotton finished last in a field of six inits first 1989 race, and last behind sixothers later in the afternoon.

And it ran twice because therearen’t enough horses and jockeys tocreate fresh fields for all the day’sscheduled races: the same nags andhoops take part in several races, sim-ply changing their names from raceto race.

And the formal race day historyshows that even officials haven’t beenimmune from self-induced disasters,including on one occasion “the judges,thinking that their job would be easierthan the previous year, got so drunkthe visiting Australian stewards hadto assist their decisions...”

And after a horse named Spookwon a couple of races another year,some of the superstitious local Ni-Vanuatu spectators were so con-vinced the hopeless hack really hadbeen spooked to run fast enough towin, they said they were fearful toreturn to the track again. To ease those fears a local medi-cine man has been brought in everyyear since to “sweep” the track of evilspirits.

But even he got too much into thespirit one year, drinking so much kavahe could have been charged with se-riously over-acting... it was the onlyyear Spook didn’t win.

And then there’s presentation daisdecorum. Some years back, thirtyAustralian country football club mem-bers attended the Vila Cup, and theirsomewhat over-exuberant presidenthijacked the presentation ceremonyto present a club jumper to Vanuatu’sPresident, who was doing the day’shonours.

“You are the Big Chief of 140,000Vanuatuans,” the Aussie slurred. “I’mthe Big Chief of 30 drunks.”
