■ Like all good journos, Lee Mylneisn’t averse to a quiet drink on a warmday.

Or a cold day for that matter. Maybeeven a wet one.

And despite many other scribes’creditations, she’s just out-manoeu-vred them all in the art of drinking-man’s one-upmanship – she got her-self paid to go on a six months pubcrawl.

It sounds like our kind of a job andLee threw herself into it with vigour,fronting up to the bars of 100 pubsacross the length and breadth of theAustralian mainland and Tasmania.

And then beating any suggestionsof a hang-over, she wrote a 256 pagebook that’s a delightful romp throughthese colourful and historic wateringholes in cities, towns, villages and re-mote communities (one with a popu-lation of just nine.)

Lee’s tome is loaded with rippertales: some tall, most true and someghostly, there are plenty of colour pics– and a column dubbed The Factsgives each pub’s address, phone num-ber, website, trading hours, kinds offood on offer, top drops on tap, ac-commodations, nearby attractions,and a website for tourist information.

We were so impressed with suchdiligence we thought we’d pick thebest and share some of Lee’s findingsabout them.

But how wrong could we be – all100 turn out to be individually worth

■ There was a time back in the1960s and ‘70s when SparklingShiraz was as much a part of the Aus-tralian scene as the Esky and the HillsHoist, the oh-so-popular bubbly beingmost-usually labelled at the time asSparkling Burgundy.

But fashions and tastes changedand these every-day drops that couldrange in taste and quality from superbto little more than overly-sweet pop(which probably furthered their de-mise,) dwindled in favour in the partyroom and at the table.

Thankfully several companies areresurrecting this inherently Aussiedrink, with Blue Pyrenees in WesternVictoria recently releasing a non-vin-tage Sparkling Shiraz that’s a trulyclass act, and a world apart from someof the stuff of the ‘60s and 70s.

With climatic conditions generallyideal for producing premium Shirazfruit in its region, Blue Pyrenees Se-nior Winemaker, Andrew Koernercreated a bubbly he believes will turnany occasion into a special one, par-ticularly with its nice berries andcherry flavours and a touch of spice.

Pay $24 and enjoy chilled with atraditional roast lamb dinner, Asiandishes or after dinner with chocolatecake.

●●●●● NSW Pub With No Beer

the space we’re allowed for ourweekly scribbles, meaning we’d bewriting nothing but Aussie pubs for thenext two years...

Like the Peel Inn at Nundle out-side Tamworth in NSW that JohnSchofield actually won from its hap-less owner in a card game 150 yearsago.

Although sold in 1922 after John’sdeath it was bought back by third gen-eration grandsons in the 1950s, and isstill run by the Schofield family today.

Or Tanswell’s Commercial Hotelin Beechworth in Victoria in whichNed Kelly is said to have taken a drinkor three – at a time when Beechworthhad 60-something pubs on its mainstreet during the 19th century GoldRush.

Then there’s Caves House Hotelat Yallingup about 300kms south ofPerth where a ghost named Molly re-putedly roams the place in the hopeher lover will return from the sea andmeet her in their favourite Room 6…or Goat Island Lodge on the North-ern Territory’s Adelaide River wherethe bar is named Casey’s after the“resident crocodile” who comes upmost nights for a feed of caramelisedpotatoes.

And while in the Northern Terri-tory how about the Daly Waters His-toric Pub that’s 600kms south of Dar-win, the only business in a ‘town’ ofnine people – and whose interior deco-rations include scores of bras strungabove the bar… although staff for-lornly claim they’ve never seen a pa-tron actually donate one.

And of course Lee had to chanceher luck for a drink at The Pub WithNo Beer (originally the CosmopolitanHotel) at Taylors Arm near Macksvillein NSW, the Silverton Hotel outsideBroken Hill that’s been used for thefilming of scores of feature films in-cluding Mad Max and Priscilla QueenOf The Desert, plus hundreds of TVcommercials promoting everythingfrom booze to soft drinks, cars to com-munications – and Queensland’sBirdsville Hotel that plays host whenthe annual races are on to a localpopulation of 12 – and nearly 6000visitors.

Then there’s the North Star Hotelat Melrose in South Australia whoseaccommodations include two trucksthat have been converted into “guestsuites” with queen beds, and con-versely Western Australia’s NewNorcia Hotel set in a village built bySpanish Benedictine missionariesnorth of Perth – complete with Na-tional Trust listing and black-robedmonks wandering the streets… anddown in Tassie, the Customs HouseHotel where Sydney-Hobart yachtiesgather at race-end, The Shipwright’sArms at Battery Point with its resi-dent ghost Max, and the RichmondArms in Australia’s best-preservedGeorgian Village.

The list goes on and on – 100 in all:Sydney’s Pittwater Arms and theAustralian Hotel at The Rocks,Young & Jacksons in Melbournewith our most-famous nude Chloe, theBreakfast Creek in Brisbane, KingO’Malleys Irish Pub and the Wig &Pen in Canberra, The Spotted Cowin Toowoomba.
