Where do you work and what do you do? I work at FortWhyte Alive, a private,non-profit environmental education organization located in southwest Winnipeg. My title is Special Projects Interpreter; I run field trips, eco-tours, and youthprograms; facilitate volunteer interpreter training; and work with teachers atschools across Manitoba. Over the past few years, I’ve taught outdoor living skillsto families, worked on developing national standards for heritage interpreters, anddeveloped my favourite program ever: combining wild edible foraging witharchery instruction.

I love working in an outdoor-focussed, dynamic environment, where no two daysare like another and no day goes exactly as planned. I really enjoy connectingpeople with the natural world around them!

How did you find out about Kinasao? In addition to camp, I’ve done a lot ofyouth work in the ELCIC. I was a Home Team Leader at Hands On, the CLAYgathering in 2010. I shared a meal with a member of Kinasao’s board, who told meabout Week in the Wild, and indicated the camp might be looking for volunteerleadership for WiTW. I saw a fit between my gifts and what was needed, so Ivolunteered to help in 2011. I’ve been serving as a volunteer instructor for WiTWsince!

What’s one of your favorite memories from the time you’ve spent atKinasao? It’s exceptionally hard to choose just one! If I have to pick: in 2012,the aurora opened up right overhead, and was reflected in glass-calm water as wedid a night-time canoe around the island...I’ll still be talking about that night whenI’m 90!

What are you most looking forward to about the trips this summer? I grewup on the Winnipeg River in eastern Manitoba, in country very similar to northernSaskatchewan. I’m looking forward to combining new waters and new people withthe rocks, trees, and sky that nurtured me as a kid. Canoe trips have and continueto be transformational times for me. Having found a way to share my passion fornature, outdoor living skills, and faith while making such important experiencespossible for others has me completely fired up!

Thanks for all your work at Kinasao, Barrett!!

We are very excited to be better able tomeet the needs of more people by makingour camp property and buildings moreaccessible. Over the past year we have beenmaking significant changes around thecamp including adding a new entrance intothe Retreat centre with a ramp, power doorand fully accessible washroom. A ramp andnew entrance have been added to thebasement level as well. Sidewalks are beinginstalled to all of the cabins and new rampsadded or replaced on cabins and bathhouses. Through an Enabling AccessibilityGrant received through the Government ofCanada, donations of materials and labourand financial gifts, 75% of this upgrade hasbeen paid for!! And for that we give thanks!

An additional $35,000 is required tocomplete this work and our goal is to havethe work done and the funds in place by theend of this summer! Please considersponsoring this project as we bring it tocompletion!

Buy a sidewalk block! We are seekingindividuals who will donate $100/sidewalkblock to support this important upgrade.Only 350 sidewalk blocks are needed tomake this happen!
