January Round Up

By Jeidy Ng The semester began with a bang, with new Kent Ridgeans joining us! To all our second semmers – welcome to the KR family and we hope you’re settling in well! And to all the returning Kent Ridgeans – welcome back home. In early January, we got the ball rolling with the Inter-Hall Games (IHG) where our players who have been training hard fought relentlessly on the field. It was also extremely heartening to see throngs of blue supporters cheering vivaciously during every match. Then, we had the 35th Anniversary Run (or walk as some might say) where almost everyone got up at 7am to participate and commemorate Kent Ridge Hall's 35th Anniversary. We had dedicated and distinguished alumni that participated and even performed in the fun-filled Kranival organized by ARU, jam-packed with melodious line-ups and complimentary refreshments like ice-cream and popcorn!

By Jared Monteiro They say love is a wild thing; taking you for a ride when you least expect it. It’s no secret that many Kent Ridgeans have unexpectedly found themselves prey to cupid’s arrows within these halls, but amidst all the love games, we have the definitive proof that hall romances can have a fairytale ending: our very own C block RF Ivan and his lovely wife Hui Ting! Their love story began within these walls, and remains solid till this day, with their darling Fennalyn opening a wonderful new chapter for them. KR reporters caught up with KR’s own power couple to garner their thoughts on life and love itself:

How did the two of you come to know each other in KR?!We used to have something called Malaysian Night in KR back then. It was through organizing this event that we got to know each other. And we do have Malaysian dinner and outings too.!

 H: Well, sometimes you don’t have to be actively on the hunt. The person for you may be right before you. I leave you all with the following quotation:!"Love is not about finding the right person, but creating a right relationship. It's not about how much love you have in the beginning but how much love you build till the end."!I: Just be yourself. There will definitely be somebody out there who likes/love you as who you are. If you will need to change yourself for someone to love you, then be prepared for a rocky path ahead.!

Did you both come to KR expecting to find your partner here, or was this more of an unexpected thing?!I: You do not go to a place expecting such things do you? Unless one sees KR as a match-making residence? Or should I say… I would expect somebody to find me, but not the other way round.!H: Unexpected. I didn’t come in with any expectations and wasn’t on the look-out. I guess that’s when life surprises you most.!

What’s it like raising a child and having to take care of an entire block of students?!I: Well... That’s just like adding one more baby to the 100 little kids under my care… no big deal! On a more serious note, it was (and still is) tough indeed, especially when there is nobody else helping us in taking care of Fennalyn. Things are getting better nonetheless, you can see that Fennalyn is growing very fast, I am sure I can bring her along for events soon J !

What advice or message do you have for the couples in KR, being the success story for such relationships?!Remember that ‘falling in love is easy, staying in love requires work’. Avoid starting a relationship hastily, but once you are in a relationship, be serious, treat the other person with love and respect, and whenever you have hiccups or obstacles, work through it together and don’t give up at the slightest challenge. There will definitely be differences and do not expect to change the other person. Learn to love the imperfections of the other, for there is where you perfect each other.!

Any advice or words for those who are looking to find their own little romance story within KR?!

DANCE PRODUCTION To Narrate a Story with Muscle and Movement

If you’re wondering why the floor-ballers are training to trap beats, or why Steppers are tossing to love songs, it’s just because the KR dancers have been sharing the space, working earnestly on the final rehearsals and adding the finishing touches to their next epic event. KR’s third Dance Production, entitled ‘Us: Rewritten’, is the culmination of creative genius, entertainment savvy, and of course that distinctive KR performance ability and passion. KR Reporters managed to get a little bit of time with some of the cast members – Jared, Debs, Clara and Ron – to find out more about the show, which has already got our mouths watering with excitement.!

So what actually goes on in the MPSH with all the dancers? Basically we’ve marked out the dimensions of the actual stage on the MPSH floor, so we can simulate the show according to scale. There are a lot of other items to practice besides just the dance performances, so we’re always rehearsing, making sure everything is running smoothly and looks good before we bump in to UCC.!

What can you tell us about DP3’s story, like a synopsis? It’s about the whole concept of fate and how it is so unpredictable and can ruthlessly impact anything and everything; in this case, the relationship between two people, and how fate turns their love into a sort of rollercoaster of emotions. !

How has the preparation process been up till now? The dancers have all been really bonding and getting closer after going through all the practices and rehearsals, so we really feel like a family now. It’s been a whole lot of work and sweat and pain, but everyone involved really wants DP3 to be a show that the audience will enjoy, and hopefully feel something from watching it, so we’re really giving our 5000% into it!!

So why should we come and watch DP3? The dance performances are going to be AMAZING, and the dancers are all so damn sexy, you can’t not watch it! There’s a bit of everything in it; from comedy to romance, glamour and drama, we’re doing our best to give you as incredible a show as we can!  Well, its showing on the Valentine’s Day weekend, so if you’ve got a special someone, watching DP together is like only the most romantic activity EVER; and if you don’t, you can still have your fill of the love vibes at the show!

Do come down for a time of feasting and having lou hei with your block-mates!!!Chingay Parade 27 & 28 February!The city’s biggest annual float parade is back, and our very own Kent Ridgeans will be a part of it. Be sure to catch them in their colourful costumes as they dance their hearts out!!!KR Day 18 March (TBA) !That’s right, folks, the Heritage Committee has been working hard to organize an entire day dedicated to YOU! You’ll definitely want to keep this day free for what will no doubt be a day of fun and surprises.!
