Hello Readers, I trust you have enjoyed the vari-ous celebrations that Christmas and New Year

traditionally bring and the plans you made for 2011 come to fruition espe-cially those that relate to improving your health and wellbeing. Some of us treat New Year resolutions a bit like wishes, hoping they will magi-cally come true simply by thinking about them. While it would be wonderful to have our wishes granted in this manner my experience is that by year’s end any such wish is just an unfulfilled dream that has not been realised. If however I put some strategy behind my wishes for 2011 and then back this up with a framework of actions that move me toward a desired goal, the likelihood of me achieving the goal is increased considerably.

If I decide in 2011 to be fitter, slimmer, happier and more energised then get-ting up earlier in the morning and walk-ing for 20 minutes and stretching for 10 minutes will move me in that direction. I may also decide to improve my diet, work less hours and go to see a com-edy movie every week. All these strategies and actions will require some self discipline to change existing habits. So do I really want to be fitter, slimmer, happier and more energised? I can see why it’s so much easier to go down the magical wish line of thinking. But that’s the difference be-tween results and unfulfilled dreams isn’t it? Yours in Health & Fitness Dale Martin

Inaugural STARplex Student Award goes to Declan Stimson Declan Stimson, Trinity South School student, received the first STARplex Student Award in December 2010 for

his consistent and disciplined effort in sport and performing arts over a num-ber of years. Declan’s list of achievements would fill these pages, and yet he’s only 16 years old. On receiving the award Declan said he was “overwhelmed as I always do these things for myself, for enjoyment. My goal is to get a soccer sports schol-arship in the US” Some of the highlights of his achieve-ments are: He plays cricket and soccer for Trinity College First Xl and has represented the College in athletics and football from an early age. In addition he’s played soccer and cricket for Northern Ade-laide teams. He’s also a musician, playing French horn and trombone in school bands and is currently practising

for Grade 5 AMEB exam. The STARplex award, launched in 2010, acknowledges signif icant achievement in the areas of fitness, wellness and performance. It recog-nises a student who is an excellent role model and who is committed to their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around them. The award recipient receives a $200 STARplex voucher. Declan’s advice to potential candidates for 2011’s award is to “take every op-portunity at STARplex and school. Be positive towards things, and then weigh up whether you can fit it in. Work hard – it pays off.” Congratulations Declan on a well de-served award.

STARS in my eyes Can I buy you a cup of coffee and chat with you about the benefits of exer-cise? Gym, swimming, sport. I have just begun my third year of membership at STARplex and it’s changed my life. I’m aerobically fit, have slowly built up my muscle strength; have lost my tummy and

lost 10kgs. I feel wonderful; sleep well and because of now a very high level of fitness am healthy and have enormous re-serves of energy for my busy working day at Trinity College. I needed a lot of encouragement at the start to join STARplex.

A wonderful friend, who regularly used the gym and the pool, gently persuaded me over many months to ‘give it a go’. It was a real turning point in my life and I’m so thankful I made a life changing, saving choice. So again, if you are thinking about doing some exercise, swimming etc. send me an email and I’ll buy you a coffee and talk about my experience at STARplex. Artificial Sweeteners—Are they good

for us? Artificial sweeten-ers are every-

where we look in the supermarkets, but are they actually healthy for us? They can be found in diet food and drinks and are also available to be added to food and drinks before serv-ing. They make foods and drinks taste sweet while providing little or no energy (kilojoules). There are a variety of artificial sweeten-ers on the market. All are many times sweeter than sugar, so only very small quantities need to be used. Artificial sweeteners can be added to food or drinks before serving or may be incorpo-

rated into diet products by food manu-facturers. Some artificial sweeteners have a carbohydrate base (e.g. sorbitol, mannitol) and the body uses these dif-ferently to sugar. Whilst they may be better for dental health, these com-pounds still provide energy (kilojoules) and excessive amounts may cause di-gestive upset and contribute signifi-cantly to overall energy intake. In recent years, you may have seen the safety of artificial sweeteners ques-tioned in the media. It is important to note that the research that raised con-cerns about their safety was carried out on animals, not humans, and the dos-ages of artificial sweeteners that were used were many times greater than it would be possible to eat or drink. Food Standards Australia and New Zea-land (FSANZ) which is responsible for

developing the food standards codes, has conducted a review regarding the safety of artificial sweeteners available in Australia and has concluded that they are safe. High amounts of sugar from soft drinks, lollies and often highly processed prod-ucts have been proven by recent re-search to increase your risk of develop-ing heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity and other lifestyle related diseases (Johnson et al 2007). My opinion is - if there are very high sugar foods that you just cannot live without, or have special dietary require-ments that require a low sugar intake (diabetes), then artificially sweetened alternatives may help you meet your nutritional goals. Athlete Bec Aldridge— one step closer to realizing her dreams.

Silence in the grandstand, players paused ready, waiting, adrenalin pump-ing, the puck drops, hockey sticks clatter and the game is on. There is a flurry of excitement as spectators watch the players scurry from one end of the court to another in what seems like an effortless motion. The crowd waits on the edge of their seats with great antici-pation, the puck glides at high speed from one end of the court to another, there is a blur of colour as players from both teams race to get to the puck first. The puck flies through the air at the opposing goal, the goalie throws himself down on the floor, the crowd waits, is it over the line, no goal. Back and forth, back and forth this is repeated as both teams fearlessly defend their goal and attack the oppositions waiting for an opportunity to score. Sweat dripping, hearts racing, players interchange and then finally the puck flies through the air at the goal, the crowd gasps, the goalie throws himself down again, the crowd roars, it’s a goal! It is no wonder that twelve year old Bec’s face lights up when she talks about her passion for everything hockey. Her involvement in the Athlete Development Program and her training with Paul Pearce on the TEKS machine has been invaluable in developing her lower body strength. Her TEKS training

sessions included some power/strength conditioning exercises on the multi sta-tion over a six month period which enhanced her strength, speed-reaction time and cardio vascular fitness, ena-bling her to out perform her opposition. Competing and placing third in her first National In-Line Hockey Championship representing the under 11’s for South Australia only twelve months after tak-ing up the sport in September/October 2010 has left this young player hungry for more. Bec started playing hockey two years ago, progressing to Inline hockey at the beginning of last year and then to ice hockey later in the year. Playing the two sports keeps Bec busy, with most nights taken up with training and the weekend with a game for each sport. “Bec seems to have a natural talent for the sport”, says her father Andrew. Invited to go to Hudson Wisconsin in the States for the friendship games in June 2011 and train with the Assassins is one step closer to Bec’s dream of receiving a scholarship to play in the States. She also wants to try out for the SA Junior State Ice Hockey Team and then to the Australian Team to represent her coun-try. Dawn Mettyear

Life to the Full! (Story continued from page 1) grateful for their prodding; it got me started in a job that I love doing. Over the years I have instructed Combat, Attack and Jam; Combat remains my favourite. Around the same time I was a youth group leader for my church. I had only been a Christian a couple of years, but enjoyed learning about the Bible and teaching the kids. I’m thankful to those in the church who invested their time in mentoring, encouraging and teaching me. I was offered the position of Youth Minister for St Francis and Trinity College. Since accepting the job I have grown as a leader in the church; running bible studies, youth groups, camps, preach-ing and leading services and working as a Chaplain to the school. I delight in the privilege it is to encourage people in

their relationships with each other and with God. At the end of November 2010 I was ordained as a deacon in the Angli-can Church; I will become a priest at the same time this year. Is my life fractured into two separate sections? I don’t think so. I love being a part of the STARplex community as it helps to keep me connected to the larger local community. On the other side though, I think being an instructor helps people to see me in a broader light, not just ‘some church guy’. With-out getting too preachy; Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” I believe that life is to be lived to the full; both spiritual and physical. We should not neglect our physical bodies as though we only had spiritual needs, nor should we think of ourselves as merely physical and forget the spiritual. David MacGillivray

‘If You Believe in it, You can Achieve it’ My name is Kylie Richards. After having my three children and not being able to shift my post baby weight of 20kg, I started to become depressed. I didn’t want to go anywhere or see anybody. After months of procrastinating I finally decided it was time to take charge and make some time for me. I joined STAR-plex Fitness Centre and went on to lose

10kg by myself, then that dreaded pla-teau hit. I couldn’t lose that last 10kg! I decided to sign up to train one on one with personal trainer, Emma Fegan. We had our regular session once a week. That was just fantastic. My trainer taught me so much. She be-came my mentor, not just my trainer and for that I will be forever grateful. I went on to reach my goal weight, however I became hungrier and more passionate about fitness than I ever had before in my life. So I decided I wanted to give back what my trainer had given to me. I enrolled to do my certificate lll and lV in fitness. I suc-cessfully achieved this and went on to undertake Les Mills group fitness train-ing so I could teach Body Pump. This was a huge challenge for me, as I’m not a loud outgoing type. Thank good-ness for the guidance from STARplex’s Group Fitness Manager Alli, as she “took me under her wing”. Wow, now how I’ve changed. I’m more confident and now love a challenge. After months of persistence of trying to get

work as a personal trainer at STAR-plex, management finally gave me the opportunity to fulfil my dream of enter-ing into the fitness industry. I had a point to prove. I didn’t want to let them or myself down. So I went at it 110%. I have been at STARplex now since March last year. I now have a client base of about twenty personal training clients that I see every week or more. I have two permanent gym shifts, and a permanent group fitness class and I love every minute of it! What I say to all of my clients is that some of us in the fitness industry aren’t all super fit like you might think we are. Some of us, including myself, have had to work hard to get where we’ve got today and have to continue to work hard to maintain our weight loss just as you do. So if you think it’s impossible it’s not. If you have a goal set in your heart, remember my motto – “if you believe in it, you can achieve it”. Kylie Richards

2010 Body Transformation Challenge The 2010 annual Body Transformation Challenge attracted a total of 180 par-ticipants, who managed to shed a mas-sive 568.5 kg and 2884cm in overall size at its conclusion late last year. These participants undertook regular exercise, followed a healthy eating plan and were guided by STARplex Personal Trainers throughout an eight week pe-riod. Regular seminars on nutrition, cardio & strength training, goal setting and motivation also featured. STARplex Fitness Centre Personal Trainers also set four additional challenges for partici-pants to complete including training in Cross fit, Bootcamp, a Group PT ses-sion and TEKS.

Congratulations to Mark Thomson (male winner) – total weight loss (12kg) and 49cm reduction in overall size, Zac Anesbury (male runner up) – total weight loss (6kg) and 38cm reduction in overall size, Rebecca O’Dea (female winner) – total weight loss (14kg) and 61cm reduction in overall size, Louise Skelton (female runner up) – total weight loss (14kg) with 59cm reduction in overall size, Wayne Saunders (encouragement award) – total weight loss (11.5kg) with a 37.5cm reduction in o v e r a l l s i z e , K a r e n M u r r a y (encouragement award) – total weight loss (8.5kg) and a 58cm reduction in overall size and Amanda Page (incentive award) – total weight loss (9.5kg) with a 46cm reduction in overall size.

With a weigh in scheduled early Febru-ary participants will be even more moti-vated to keep on track over the Christ-mas period. Congratulations also to everyone who took up the challenge and who are con-tinuing their journey to better their health and wellbeing. As Paul Pearce aptly puts it “this isn’t just about weight loss, it’s about taking steps to change your lifestyle. I see the challenge as the be-ginning, not the goal itself”. Thank you to sponsors Redback Nutri-tion, Gauci Hair and Beauty (Modbury), Kalbeeba Carpenters and Builders, Noodle Box Gawler and Telecoms (Salisbury) for sponsoring the event.

Female BTC Finalist—Rebecca O’Dea Rebecca O’Dea, Female winner of the 2010 Body Transforma-tion Challenge (BTC) signed up for the eight week challenge to keep active for her job as a police officer. Rebecca said, that it was time to change her mindset after slowly putting on the weight and before it became too much of a problem and more difficult to shift. With a radical change to her diet and resisting the temptation to stop at McDonalds for lunch, Rebecca started to take her lunch to work. She cut out alcohol for the whole eight weeks, cut out all sauces and dressings, ate either a healthy stir-fry or salad daily and reduced her consumption of processed food. Eating six small meals a day and her main meal at lunch time, she was easily motivated after losing six kilos in the first week. “Working on shift made it a little bit more difficult to get into a routine” said Rebecca, but with great determination she man-aged to fit in all her gym sessions and come to STARplex every (Story continued on page 6)

Male BTC Finalist— Mark Thomson “To be honest I only signed up for the BTC because my wife told me to, I was quite content with my lifestyle before commencing the challenge eight weeks ago. I didn’t think about winning, it was more about changing my mindset.” says Mark Thomson, male winner of the 2010 Body Transformation Challenge. Now more committed to his health and wellbeing, he tells a completely different story and reports that he will never go back. Wearing an XL mens at the start of the challenge and dropping to a small mens at the end of the eight weeks has made him even more determined to maintain his new physique, even though he will be working away from home for long periods of time throughout 2011. With his positive outlook and a list of exercises given to him from personal trainer Wade Lack he says he will continue his exercise program whilst he is away. As a first timer Mark enjoyed the entire experience of the BTC (Story continued on page 6)

Each Sunday she would sit down and plan what classes she could fit into her week, this usually consisted of two weight sessions or a pump class, a personal train-ing session with Wade Lack, a couple of RPM classes and some cardio sessions on the rower or cross trainer. Rebecca participated in all the challenges and seminars presented by STARplex professionals. “I found the semi-nars very useful, especially the nutrition seminar in improv-ing my diet. “I enjoyed the TEKS and Crossfit challenges most of all and realizing that I can work that hard and that I can do it” says Rebecca. “Exercise is a part of my life, I’m excited to go to the gym now” said Rebecca. Winter Swimming Benefits It has been widely reported that children need repetition in order to learn a skill whether it is reading, riding a bike or swimming. It constantly surprises those of us in the aquatic industry that in winter many par-ents choose to take their children out of swimming lessons. When they bring their children back to lessons in term four parents are surprised that their chil-dren have in many cases lost some as-pect of the skills they have previously learnt earlier in the year and need to go into a lower level than where they were in term one.

Concerns over catching colds and hav-ing to go out in cold weather are pre-dominantly the reasons parents stop their children swimming over the winter months. The progress the children can make over continuing lessons through-out winter will far outweigh the reasons for not continuing. For older children who continue to swim throughout winter it is interesting to note that parents report improvement in overall fitness when playing soccer, football and other winter sports. Chil-dren who swim throughout the cooler months are also water confident when summer arrives. At STARplex Swim Centre we expect children to be in any one particular level for up to 12 months (four continu-ous terms. Children who continually stop and start lessons would be expected to be in their level a lot longer. A skill is not learnt until it can be repeated confidently and competently. It is really important that once the deci-sion is made to have your child learn to swim, they are able to continue with

lessons throughout the year so that important life saving skills are not com-pletely lost and you find yourself start-ing the learn to swim process again. Learning to swim is a skill for life and will allow your child to participate confi-dently and competently in so many ar-eas such as water skiing, kayaking, swimming with friends, boating activi-ties and more. Many children in our swim school have now gained employ-ment at STARplex Swim Centre. The possibilities are endless. Keep the children swimming through winter....you will see the benefits. ney with losing a further three kilos post BTC and has taken up a new challenge playing AFL. Starting her pre-season training recently, she will also continue to exercise at STAR-plex by doing two personal training sessions and two ses-sions of either RPM or cardio training each week. “If I didn’t do the BTC I wouldn’t be able to run in the training sessions and wouldn’t have even considered playing football” says Re-becca. “My trainer Wade pushed me to my limit with gentle under-standing and I definitely owe him a big thank you” says Re-becca. Rebecca’s message to anyone considering entering the next BTC is “try it you’ll be surprised what you can achieve in a short period of time”. Dawn Mettyear

You respond by attending events (or not!), emailing, and providing feed-back (whether through our feedback system such as What Did you Like? or verbally to Staff). And through our staff and STARgazer we get to hear inspirational stories about your life, what you’ve achieved, and how STARplex has helped you reach your goals – and this, for me, is really rewarding. In 2011 we want to improve our conversations with you, learn more about what you want to hear from us, where, when and how, get to know you a little better, hear more inspiring sto-ries and maybe even meet you in person. Several fundraisers were held throughout the year and we are proud to say that we have made a grand total of $8466.50 for the Starlight Children’s Charity. We thank all those who donated time, goods/services and money to help us help Starlight and we look forward to reaching our goal of $10,000 in 2011.
