DISTRICT ORCHESTRA CONCERT On Thursday, March 24th, all of

the orchestras in the district will

perform together in a concert at

7:00 p.m. in the high school audi-torium. The district orchestra con-

cert celebrates March as ―Music in

Our Schools Month‖. It also serves as an inspira-

tion to younger students and parents. As an

added bonus, you will hear a work performed by the 4-12 grade orchestra. That’s a LOT of awe-

some stringers! Please come to our concert and

support the musicians who work hard throughout

the year.

Dates to Remember

Eden Central School District may be forced to close

school due to weather conditions. In order to en-

sure that the district is in session for the required 180 days, a school delay procedure may be used,

when necessary.

A two hour delay at the start of the school day may be announced on our auto-

mated phone contact system, and television and radio stations as soon as a deci-

sion to delay has been made. School buses will pick up students two hours later

then normal time, ex.‖ if your child is picked up at 6:15 a.m. they will be picked

up at 8:15 a.m.‖ Dismissal for all schools will remain at the regular time.

Planning in advance as to how your family will accommodate a delay is advised. We apologize for

any inconvenience the delay process may cause

you.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION Our National Honor Society Inductions for Juniors will be held on

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

The minimum average to be considered for National Honor Society will be raised to 92% this spring. If you have any

OPEN HOUSE The 2nd Semester Open House will be held Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Teachers will be available in their classrooms from 7:00-8:30 p.m. to discuss 2nd semester courses and at the same time each department will be represented in the cafeteria to discuss their department and what courses they will be offering next year. Each department and many clubs will have displays in the cafeteria. The counseling staff will be available in the Counseling Center. Ms. Menkiena and I will be available in the Main Office. Refreshments will be available in the cafeteria compliments of the Eden PTA.

DRUG AWARENESS PARENT MEETINGS Students who wish to attend Eden’s Senior Prom, Junior Prom and Homecoming

Dances must now have at least one parent or adult guardian attend a basic alcohol and other drug training that will take place at the Junior/Senior High School Audi-

torium. The meetings will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.

7TH & 8TH GRADE VALENTINE’S DAY DANCE

The Valentine’s Day Dance for 7th and 8th grade will be held in the High School Foyer on Friday, Febru-ary 11, 2011 from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. Please drop off and pick up your children in the front of the building (Main Foyer). Please do not drop off your children before 7:00 p.m. Please pick them up no later than 9:30 p.m. Students are not allowed to bring book bags or gym bags to the dance. Tickets for the dance will be sold during 7th and 8th grade advisement for $3.00 each. Tickets will not be sold at the door and are required to enter the dance. Pizza, pop, juice, and water will be sold for $1.00 each. Semi-formal at-tire and no hats, please.

PTA NEWS In the Jr/Sr High School, Eden’s PTA sponsors field trips, scholarships, awards and ceremonies that recog-nize student excellence and reward their accomplishments. These programs and activities are in danger of being downsized as fundraising participation continues to decline. Today, 33% of families have become members, but if we were to achieve full participation we would be able to significantly reduce the number of fundraisers run during the year. Dues are only $10 per year, but you can refer to the PTA’s webpage on the District’s website for more information. Please join today!

Important Reminder: All Seniors whose families are current members of the PTA are eligible to apply for one of three $500 scholarships.

If your child pre-ordered a 2011 Yearbook in October, you should have received an in-voice from Jostens (yearbook publisher). You may pay for the yearbook by check, on-line or phone. It is necessary for you to pay for your child's yearbook IN FULL by the deadline, as it is Jostens policy to cancel orders that are not paid for by their deadline listed on the invoice. Jostens does allow you to pay for your yearbook in "installments," although there is a nominal charge to do so. Please also keep in mind the following: Seniors (Class of 2011) who meet their obligation to the senior class fund by selling the necessary number of magazines get a yearbook with name personalization paid for thru school-therefore YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE AN INVOICE FROM JOS-TENS. Invoices for extras not covered by the senior class fund (icons, clear covers, autograph sections, etc) will be mailed to your home in April, 2011. Embers Yearbook staff members also DO NOT RECEIVE A BILL FOR THEIR YEARBOOKS FROM JOSTENS because of their participation in the Entertainment Book fund-raiser. Invoices for Embers staff members were mailed in December, and also must be paid in full by the deadline to receive your yearbook. Lastly, due to increasing costs of the yearbook, it is our intention to only order a VERY LIMITED number of yearbooks to sell in June, 2011, and the price will be $65.00. To guarantee that your child receives a 2011 yearbook, please pay for your pre-ordered yearbook in full by the required date. If your child did not pre-order a yearbook, but still wishes to purchase one, you can order one at www.jostens.com. If you have any questions about the status of your yearbook order, please call Jostens at 866-282-1516.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS We are currently looking for families interested in hosting a foreign exchange student for the 2011-2012 school year. This is an incredible opportunity to open your home and share your life to an individual from another culture. Our students are affiliated with AFS. But we need your help! Since it is early enough we still have the ability to try to match your requests for a student from a specific country. However, we need your input now in order to make that match. NEWS FROM THE ATHLETIC OFFICE The winter sports season is coming to a close. Each sport will host their own awards ceremony. Please see your varsity coach for more details. Spring Sports Spring sports practices are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 7. The school will provide physicals on a date yet to be determined. If your child is still in need of a physical for the spring season, please contact your child’s doctor. Athletes must have a physical within the past 12 months in order to participate in practice. Contests will start the first week of April. Please Note: Due to the increase of athletic teams to our spring sports program, indoor practices will be held in the evening, as well as right after school. The last late bus run is at 5:00 p.m., so there may be times when athletes will have to provide their own transportation to and/or from practice. Let’s hope for an early spring so our teams can practice outside in the sunshine!

NEWS FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICE

ALL STUDENTS:

COURSE SELECTION:

Counselors will be meeting with all students in the coming months to select courses for next year (can you believe it

is already that time of year?). We plan to allow students to once again select their courses on-line using school

computers. Counselors will continue to review tentative schedules individually with students to ensure that all local

and NYS graduation requirements are being met. Parents should expect their son/daughter to bring home a

computer printout of his/her course selections for review. Please help us as we encourage your children to

consider taking both required and elective courses that challenge them and give them valuable life experience (and

informed choices when they are paying for college classes!). The updated 2011-2012 Course curriculum guide

will be available online after February 11th at edencentral.org.

CAREER FAIR 2011:

The 2011 WNY Career Fair will be held Thursday, March 31st at Daemen College in the school’s gymnasium from

6:30 pm – 8:00 pm. The always-popular presentation on creating an employability portfolio is back. Over 160

career fields will be represented, including Hot Jobs of the Future. The program is free to all interested students

and adults. This is an excellent opportunity to get junior high and senior high school students involved in the career

exploration process. Please contact the guidance office for additional information.

ATTENTION SENIORS AND PARENTS:

SUBMIT YOUR FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid):

A reminder to parents of college-bound seniors: it is important to get your financial aid forms (FAFSA) completed

and submitted as soon as possible. The simplest way to complete the form is via the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

If you need forms, assistance with school Federal code numbers, or help in completing the application, please

contact the financial aid office at the college(s) to which your child has applied or Mrs. Banks or Mr. Hassett at

992-3601. All Seniors who have applied to a 4-year college have been given a copy of the Financial Aid

presentation that was held in December at the Sr. High. For students heading to a college or university in New

York State, more valuable information pertaining to loans, grants and scholarships is available at www.hesc.com.

Also, any Senior who plans to attend a 2-year college next fall is encouraged to apply now even though the

deadlines are not until summer.

SCHOLARSHIPS

All Seniors will attend an informational meeting regarding the local Eden scholarships that are awarded at

graduation on Wednesday, April 6th at 1:45pm. A packet of all scholarships will be distributed to seniors and we

will review deadlines, application criteria, etc.

The guidance office maintains a current file of local scholarships that are displayed on our office wall. Seniors are

encouraged to contact the Financial Aid offices of the schools they plan to attend (the colleges have access to

much more money than we do!) and to check regularly in the Guidance Office to review posted scholarships which

are updated on a weekly basis. Scholarships are competitive awards. Please pay attention to deadlines and give our

office at least one week notice if you require a copy of your official transcript and/or a counselor’s statement!

Additional scholarship information regarding national scholarship opportunities is available on the Internet. One of

the best sources for national scholarship information is at www.fastweb.com. A student will be asked to complete

a brief survey and then establish a free mailbox that will be updated weekly with scholarship offers specific to the

applicant. For students planning to attend a college or university in New York, please visit www.hesc.com for

scholarships, grants and TAP information exclusively for students who will attend college in NY State.

You should never have to pay to file a FAFSA or for scholarship information. Legitimate sponsoring

organizations do not charge a fee for their services and the FAFSA is a FREE application for federal

student aid.

ATTENTION JUNIORS AND THEIR PARENTS:

JUNIOR PARENT COLLEGE INFO NIGHT FEBRUARY 17th AT 6:00 pm

Parents of College-bound Juniors are invited to meet with Mrs. Banks and Mr. Hassett on Thursday, February 17th

at 6:00pm in the High School Choral Room 128 to discuss the procedures to follow when researching, visiting and

applying to 2 and 4-year colleges and universities. This meeting will be followed by the Jr. Sr. High School Open

House, slated to begin at 7pm.

SAT TEST TO BE OFFERED IN MAY AT EDEN SR. HIGH SCHOOL:

The SAT Reasoning Test will be held on Saturday, May 7th from 7:45am to 1:15 pm at the Eden Sr. High School.

Juniors must register for the test by April 8th by visiting www.collegeboard.com (where students can also

register for the tests held in March or June, held at either Hamburg or Frontier High Schools…see the website

for applicable registration deadlines…the Eden Central School calendar incorrectly lists the SAT as being held in

Eden on April 2nd…we apologize for this error, there is no SAT offered anywhere on this date).

No matter when or where you take the test, please remember to enter Eden’s School Code (331-755) to ensure

that your scores are included on your official High School transcript (this will save you money when you apply to

schools as a Senior!). Registration materials are available in the Guidance Office.

All Juniors who took the PSAT last October have received their scores and strength/weakness profiles from the

counselors. Remember to use those reports to prepare for the SAT, a longer and more challenging exam. Please

call Mrs. Banks or Mr. Hassett at 992-3601 if you have any questions!

SAT PREP COURSES AVAILABLE

Trocaire College is offering an SAT Prep course on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 9pm beginning March 31st and

running through May 4th for Juniors who plan to take the SAT Reasoning Test in May or June (again, the standard

SAT test will be held at Eden Jr. Sr. High School on May 7th from 7:45 am to 1:15pm...registration required

by April 8th). Please contact Mrs. Herr in the Guidance Office (992-3601) to request that a registration flyer be

mailed to you. The cost of the Trocaire program is $119.00. More and more students are also using the

Official SAT Online Course offered by the College Board (www.collegeboard.com/practice/) which consists of 10

online tests, 18 interactive lessons and personalized essay scoring for a cost of $69.95.

ATTENTION SOPHOMORES AND THEIR PARENTS:

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR SOPHOMORES:

Students in 10th grade attended a presentation on Vocational Education in November (also known commonly by

parents and students as “Tech Ed”) and had the opportunity to participate in a tour of either the Carrier or

Ormsby Vocational Centers. Some students have already registered for Vocational Programs that take place during

11th and 12th grade. Please contact Mrs. Banks or Mr. Hassett if you would like to discuss the options available to

your son/daughter and how Vocational Education may affect the post-High School opportunities available to your

child.
