Editorial

Dear Porsche Club members,

The range of Porsche models is aboutto be extended again. This time, weare launching a vehicle that perfectlybridges the gap between the 911 andthe Boxster S.

The name of this sporty two-seater,based on the Boxster and anticipatedwith so much excitement by thePorsche Clubs, is now known: the Cayman S. It has taken a year and ahalf for this name to win the day againsta variety of type designations that were considered. It was a drawn outprocess, but one that is definitely jus-tified. The name had to meet a varietyof requirements: for example, it had toevoke the emotion, exclusivity andassociation that are appropriate to themarque and the actual vehicle itself. Ithad to be capable of being pronouncedeasily throughout the world and, a particularly time-consuming element,it had to be verified in terms of inter-national copyright laws.

A similar amount of work went intopreparing the publicity campaign forthe Cayman that was launched in February. I am sure you will alreadyhave noticed the photo published innumerous magazines, of the three caymans lying aggressively in wait inthe water in the twilight. Originally agraphic design, this image had to berealised in a photographic studio using

actual caymans from a Karlsruhe zooand a heated water basin. A speciallight was even required to make surethat the animals kept their eyes open.

The result was certainly convincing andmade the associated advertisement asuccessful overture to the graduallaunch of the Cayman S. The smallSouth American crocodiles, which areknown for their excellent reflexes andaggression fit perfectly into the over-all emotional concept that portrays the Cayman S as agile, dynamic and capable of exercising explosive power.With its central engine, fast responseto steering commands, dynamic per-formance and highly developed brak-ing system, the Cayman will satisfy the demands of many Porsche Clubmembers and deliver what the sloganfor its launch promises: “ConsistentlyPorsche”.

Its extraordinary design and muscularshape mean that the Cayman S is afascinating, independent model visuallyas well. And thanks to the sophisticat-ed space concept, this mid-enginedCoupé, which is unique in its class, isextremely suitable for everyday use.When you see the first photos of thevehicle in the coming days and receivethe first information about its inner values, you will agree with us that thissports car has everything it needs to

1. News from Porsche AG

New Porsche Museum

Construction work on the new Porschemuseum at Porscheplatz in Zuffen-hausen is to start this year. A total of170 architectural practices from allover Europe tendered for the project,with the Delugan Meissl architectsfrom Vienna winning the day. The Austrians’ concept met with greatapproval from the specialist jury andthe Porsche directors. “We want thisnew building at our headquarters inZuffenhausen to be an architecturalhighlight that will be recognised farbeyond the borders of Stuttgart”, saidDr. Wendelin Wiedeking, the Chairmanof Porsche AG.

A dynamically shaped monolithic body,which appears to float above theground and the ground floor level, con-ceals a 5,000 square metre exhibitionarea, which will be used to presentaround 80 vehicles. The base of thebuilding houses the entrance area andthe foyer, which provides views of theworkshop for historic vehicles and thearchive. A museum shop, a visitorrestaurant, a coffee bar, an exclusiverestaurant with large roof terrace andan underground car park with spacefor over 300 cars round off the successful concept. The museum isscheduled to open in 2007.

Good news at the Annual General Meeting of Porsche shareholders inStuttgart on 28.01.2005: Accordingto the preliminary figures, in the firsthalf of the current 2004/05 financialyear Porsche will make a pre-tax profit of 225 million Euro. This is a 6.5percent increase on last year. Consol-idated turnover has climbed by 3.4 percent to 2.95 billion Euro.

Vehicle sales were increased by 9.7percent to 35,660 units, including12,300 Porsche 911s (up 19.5 per-cent) and 19,200 Cayennes (up 13.3percent). Boxster sales fell by 25.9percent to 3,900 units, although thenew Boxster generation means thatsignificantly better results are expectedfor the second half of the year. Share-holders were rewarded for their trustwith dividends of 3.94 Euro (per ordi-nary share) and four Euro (per preference share). “The success storycontinues”, announced Dr. WendelinWiedeking.

Porsche Remainson Course forSuccess

Since 10th January, Porsche has beenproducing at a new engine plant in Zuf-fenhausen – a masterpiece both insideand out. Externally this glass-frontedbuilding, which was completed in just14 months, demonstrates that evenan industrial building can exude fasci-nation and warmth. The facade wasbased on the external view of thePorsche Centres. The high level of inci-dent light creates a feeling of open-ness and transparency inside andensures a pleasant working environ-ment. The plant, which cost 70 millionEuro, has a floor space of 9,000square metres and is notable for itsoptimised and clearly identifiable mate-rial flows and minimal distances –every part is available in the right placeat the right time. The engines, between100 and 150 V8 engines per day, areassembled on a single level and the150 employees benefit from a per-fectly ergonomical assembly line. Afterthe extensive quality control proce-dures, the virtually zero noise, driver-

less transport system uses a mastercomputer and magnetic navigation toconvey the finished engines for dis-patch – as well as the main Zuffen-hausen plant, the new facility alsosupplies engines to Porsche Leipzigand to Valmet in Finland.

Porsche Deutschland GmbH

Porsche Deutschland Co-operates with the Ski Resort of Ischgl

Ischgl, one of Austria’s most attrac-tive skiing areas with 205 kilometresof piste and 42 lifts, had a strong asso-ciation with Porsche in the past sea-son. “The Porsche Legend” was themost spectacular product of the co-operation between Porsche Deutsch-land and the Austrian ski resort. Withimmense skill, the two sculptors Ste-fan Juen (Austria) and Toni Blättler(Switzerland) carved full-size modelsof a Porsche 911, a Boxster and a

Cayenne out of snow as part of thetraditional snow sculpture competi-tion. The 1.2 million visitors who cometo Ischgl every season to enjoy thespecial flair of the resort agreed thatit was a cool accomplishment.

There were excellent opportunities tobring the Porsche legend closer to abroad public, and this was achieved invarious ways. Top hotels the “TrofanaRoyal” and the “Madlein” treated their

guests to a “Cayenne shuttle service”and provided them with extensiveinformation about the current Porschemodel range.

A picture of a Porsche adorned the liftpasses on the Silvretta cable car andall ski passes, while anyone arrivingat the 2,300 metre Idalp could marvelat an original new 911 Carrera. At thecentral meeting point for skiers, theCarrera appeared in a heated glasscase – protected from the wind andweather but clearly visible to on-lookers. And when it began to get darkin the evening, its headlights wereturned on automatically to provide avery special kind of light.

It was just a shame that the increasingtemperatures as the year progressedeventually melted those fantastic snowsculptures. But the Porsche legendlives on.

Cayenne Feelingon the Golf Course

The concept and prototype team inWeissach have given an electric golfbuggy the look of a Cayenne. Threemonths of development work wereinvested in the project. For example,an aluminium frame had to be weldedon in order to fit a 1:3 scale version ofthe Cayenne’s front end. The bonnetand wings are made of plastic. TheCayenne Caddie has a lighting systemlike the original, scaled down copiesof the original rims and suggested endpipes for the exhaust system. Artificialleather seats and a steering wheel withthe Porsche emblem round off theCayenne outfit. After extensive andsuccessful test drives, two exampleshave already been delivered.

At the 75th Geneva Automobil-Salonexhibition, Porsche set fresh toneswith the European premiere of the new911 Cabriolet. The open top sportscar was the eye-catching centrepieceof the 1,100 square meter stand inHall 6 at the Palexpo exhibition centre.A total of 14 vehicles showed a repre-sentative cross section of the currentrange of models, while the engines ondisplay provided an interesting insightinto the drive technology. This year’s

exhibition attracted more people thanever before: between 3rd and 13thMarch a total of 747,700 visitors wererecorded.

Porsche Europe Parade 2006 in Gothenburg

As many of you will already know, thePorsche Europe Parade 2006 will beheld from 29th June to 2nd July in Sweden. The Porsche Club Sverigewould like to invite all Porsche Clubmembers and their families to cometo Gothenburg. Although it is still more than a year before this big eventbegins, the planning is in full swing.

For example, it has already beenannounced that an anniversary cele-bration will be held to mark 30 yearsof the Porsche Club Sverige and onthe 1st July there will be a parade rightthrough the centre of Gothenburg –including the main street, which is nor-mally closed to traffic.

We would like to take this opportunityto present the rough programme toyou. In the next issue of the PorscheClub News, we will then provide youwith more details about the parade and useful information about the hostcountry, Sweden.

From 26th to 29th August 2005, the Porsche Club Great Britain is holding itsPorsche Club Festival. Like last year, the venue for the event will be the BrandsHatch racing circuit. The festival is Europe’s largest Porsche Club meeting, offer-ing an interesting supporting programme that includes a parts market, vehicleparades and off-road competitions for the Porsche Cayenne, while a further highlight is provided by a track day for Club members. Porsche Club Deutschland – German Meeting 2005 on the North SeaCoast

This year’s annual Porsche Club Deutschland meeting is being organised by thePorsche Club Ostfriesland from 1st to 4th September in Emden – with the slogan:“The great national meeting on the North Sea coast”. Awaiting participants is avaried programme, which skilfully incorporates the history of the region’s coastaland cultural landscape and its unique attractions. Take the opportunity to entera golf tournament or enter your vehicle in a Concours d’Elégance in the centreof Emden. You can also look forward to an adventurous drive “through marshand geest landscapes”, a visit to a shipyard and a gala evening with dancing andentertainment. Porsche Club Deutschland Boxster Group – Trip to Scotland

From 6th to 14th August 2005, the Porsche Club Deutschland’s Boxster Groupis organising a tour of Scotland. The 900-kilometre route includes the Highlands,passing castles, palaces and lochs, as well as historic Celtic sites. Other high-lights of the trip include whisky tasting at a distillery and an overnight stay in aScottish castle. Porsche AG Worldwide Club Co-ordination – Classic Round Table 2005

This year, the Classic Round Table for European Porsche Clubs will take placeduring the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and not, as normal, duringTechno Classica in Essen. The Oldtimer Grand Prix will be held between 12thand 14th August 2005. The Classic Round Table has been provisionally arrangedfor the afternoon of 12th August at a venue close to the track. We have takenan option on a large number of rooms at the Mercure Parkhotel in Bad Neuenahr,and these can be booked by participants in the conference. Porsche Club München – Golf Challenge 2005

From 29th to 31st July 2005, the Porsche Club München is holding a golf tournament with an attractive supporting programme. The tournament will beheld at the Margarethenhof Golf Club in Waakirchen, South of Munich. For beginners, there will be a taster course and an alternative programme is available for non-golfers. There will also be plenty of time to marvel at the display of historic Porsches or to take a test drive in some of the current models.The day will end with an Italian evening and the presentation ceremony. On theSunday, a trip into the Bavarian Alps to Wallberg is planned, where there is a former mountain circuit. AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix 2005

The 33rd Oldtimer Grand Prix will beheld from 12th to 14th August 2005at the Nürburgring – one of the high-lights of the year for all lovers of historic motor sport and of course forall Porsche fans.

There is no better opportunity to tracethe Porsche legend than at the Old-timer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.For three whole days, everything re-volves around the marque for whichthe slogan “Driving at its best” wascoined.

Take the opportunity to find out moreabout what is offered by the variousPorsche departments represented.For example, Porsche Classic will be providing information about the availability of spare parts. The Porsche Customer Centre will be demonstrat-ing its expertise in restoration, Exclu-sive and Tequipment will be presentingtheir ranges of accessories and youcan also experience at first hand howoriginal parts are produced in the so-called living workshop. the Porsche Club Co-ordination andPorsche Deutschland will also be onhand to answer any questions youmight have.

The countless Porsches parked on thesite, representing almost the entire his-tory of the marque, are a particularlyeye-catching aspect of the event. Ifyou want your Porsche to be part ofthis, all you have to do is purchase aVIP package, which includes a parkingspace on site for your Porsche – spacepermitting. Anyone who buys a pack-age but is not travelling in a Porschecan park their car outside the race-track in a reserved parking area that iseasily accessible from the paddock.

The VIP package also gives you accessto the Porsche hospitality tent, wheredrinks are available and a buffet will belaid on at lunchtimes and on Saturdayevening. Of course, you also haveaccess to all of the grandstands at thetrack and to the paddock and, last butnot least, everyone who buys a pack-age will receive a giveaway consisting

It is almost that time again – the Inter-nationale Automobil Ausstellung (IAA –international motor show) in Frankfurtwill soon be opening its doors for the61st time. This year, the IAA will beheld between 13th and 25th Septem-ber. The doors will be open to the pub-lic from 17th September.

5. ReportsPorsche Club Bulgarien

First Club Meeting

The first meeting of the Porsche ClubBulgaria was held in the final quarterof last year. Porsche owners from theClub were invited to the new Hotel Expoin Sofia. A total of 20 Porsche driversturned up, mainly in a Porsche 911,Boxster or Cayenne. The host wasOrchid Sports Cars Bulgaria Ltd., thenew Porsche importer for Bulgaria,which set out to provide the Club withactive support in its initial phase.

Mike Lewkowitz, Managing Director of Orchid Sports Cars, reported onplanned activities by the importer and familiarised participants with the guidelines and possibilities of aPorsche Club. The official Club repre-sentatives were then selected. GeorgiHadjiski will take on the office of ClubPresident, Tomo Borissov was appoint-ed Vice President, while Vladislav Krumov will perform the function ofClub Secretary.

The first meeting of the Club wasreported on national television and innewspapers and car magazines.

50 Years of the Porsche Club Zürich

The Porsche Club Zürich celebratedits 50th anniversary last year with avery varied two-day programme ofactivities. The most important elementof this anniversary event was a trip thathad been put together with great ded-ication and began in Chur. The numer-ous participants were divided into atotal of 17 teams and then set off intheir Porsches towards Arosa. On theway, they had to complete all kinds oftests. At various checkpoints, they hadto answer questions about the historyof the Porsche Club Zürich and demon-strate their knowledge of geographyor the highway code.

Some of the tasks made high demandson the skills of the Porsche fans. Golffreaks had the chance to shine at put-ting, while those with a steady handgot the most points in the target pistolshooting. There was also an elementof humour. For example, each teammember was required to arrive at thefinish with two live flies and one chal-lenge was to milk a cow, obtaining asmuch milk as possible in the allotted

time. Meanwhile, the task of playing aparticular song on an alpine horn pro-vided plenty of excitement. Despitetheir vivid imaginations, however, mostof the listeners could not recognisethe tunes.

The presentation ceremony was heldin the evening, which also included agala dinner, speeches and tributes to various Club members for their service in the work of the Club. VolkerSpannagel from the Club Co-ordinationbrought Porsche AG’s congratulationson the Club's anniversary.

The following day involved a cable cartrip to the top of the 2,653-metreWeisshorngipfel, but snow and coldweather meant that this was not quiteas impressive as planned. Neverthe-less, the anniversary event as a wholeprovided great enjoyment for every-one who attended.

The Barretstown Clinic founded in Ire-land by Paul Newman offers a uniqueprogramme of physiotherapy and sup-port for children from all over Europewho are suffering from cancer or oth-er serious diseases. During their tendays of therapy the children, agedbetween seven and 17, learn how toregain their inner strength and self-con-fidence. They are looked after individ-ually by a trained supervisor calledCara, which means friend in the Gaeliclanguage.

On their first visit to the Clinic, themembers of the Porsche Club Irelandwere deeply moved by the experienceand a close link quickly grew upbetween Barretstown and the Club,which is reflected in regular jointevents. To mark Barretstown’s tenthanniversary, on 4rd September 2004a “Special Fundraising Drive” was

organised, supported by Porsche AG,Porsche Cars Great Britain, thePorsche Club Great Britain, MartinBiranne from the Mondello Racing Circuit and the Porsche Club Ireland.The event at the Mondello Park circuit,40 kilometres from Dublin, was alsoattended by Paul Newman himself.

A huge number of donations were col-lected. Each guest or driver had to pay5,000.– Euro to participate, whichwas then donated directly to the Clinic.

A Porsche 997, which at that time wasnot yet available in Ireland and hadbeen generously donated by PorscheCars Great Britain, completed someimpressive demonstration laps on thetrack. At an auction following the galaevening, it was sold for 175,000.–Euro. Moreover, many other gifts weredonated, for example a Gucci hand-

made electronic guitar played by PaulMcCartney that night. In total, the dayraised 440,000.– Euro for Barrets-town.

London-Sydney in a Porsche Cayenne

It sounded great – reviving the 1968London-Sydney Marathon and follow-ing in the footsteps of some famousrally drivers.

It could work. For support, I would haveex-racing driver Mark Peters as my co-driver and his wife Noreen taking careof the logistics. And the best thingabout it would be that I would be outof my office for five weeks.

No sooner said than done. On the flightfrom Johannesburg to London I startedto have my first bad feelings about thechallenges ahead. Back in 1968, the16,000 kilometre route was called an“endurance challenge for man andmachine”. It ran from London throughFrance, Germany, Austria, Italy,Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran,Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and thenby sea to Freemantle and then on toPerth and Sydney. However, this timeit had to done in the prevailing politicalclimate of 2004. This meant a longerleg through India, from where a huge

Cayenne and therefore had completefaith that we would complete themarathon. All we took with us were twospare rims and the all-terrain tyres sug-gested by Porsche.

Our basalt black Cayenne Turbo wasdelivered one day before the eventbegan. There was not even enoughtime to get used to it, one of the resultsof which was that Noreen continuallycomplained during the rally that thevolume control on the steering wheelwas not working, as she sat pressingthe Tiptronic buttons. However, wejust about had the chance to fit theroof rack for the spare wheels and thenthe Cayenne lined up for the start ofthe journey with just 200 kilometreson the clock.

Unfortunately, we also needed to learnabout rally driving. Our navigation skills– particularly mine – left plenty to bedesired and we lost 45 seconds onspecial stages in France and were onlyin 19th place when we arrived in Italy.

The big question was: Which vehicleshould we choose for this trip?

In 1968, the works teams took thisevent very seriously. Back then, theBritish Motor Corporation employedno less than 500 people in service andsupport, while the financially weakerprivate teams relied on taking half atonne of spare parts with them.

As neither Mark, nor I, nor Noreen par-ticularly relished the idea of carryingout repairs en route, we opted to drivewithout spare parts – but to make upfor that we chose a brand new vehiclewe knew we could rely on – the PorscheCayenne Turbo. Some people doubtedwhether such a complicated car withits Tiptronic gearbox and the sophisti-cated chassis was the right choice.But from my point of view, the deci-sion was easy to explain. I had close-ly followed the development of the

Then came India. Nobody had preparedus for the chaos of Indian roads. Every-where, we met friendly, smiling peoplebut on horrendous roads, clogged upwith cars, trucks, buses, bikes andmotorbikes carrying three, four oreven five people. And that is not tomention a host of wandering animals.

The rally stages in India were amongthe most demanding of the wholemarathon, as it was raining and theroads were extremely muddy. Howev-er, this did not really slow down theCayenne, which completed the coursewith no problems. One section had nofewer than 27 tight hairpin bends fromthe valley to the plateau – but thanksto Porsche traction control, pure turbo power and Tiptronic, the car han-dled these bends with aplomb. Vehi-cles on this marathon were somewhatmistreated. However, we had to callour Porsche Centre in South Africaonce in the middle of India to ask howto clean the air filter. Oh, and we hadone puncture, but that was all.

Australia brought a welcome change.The 1,500 kilometre stage from Darwin to Alice Springs included somefantastic straights. With no speed limits to slow us down, we drove at anaverage of more than 200 km/h – per-fect conditions for this great Porsche.

We passed Ayers Rock – accompaniedby a fabulous sunset – and continuedthrough the opal mining town of Cooper Pedy. Due to rain, which isunusual in this region, the normally dryground was adorned with millions offlowers. Even Lake Eyre – where Donald Campbell once made his worldwater speed record attempts – wasfull of water for the first time in tenyears.

After 35 days and 16,000 kilometres,we finally crossed the finish line in Sydney. Our abilities as rally driversand a navigation team had improvedalong the way. Despite this, we finishedfourth in our class, only two secondsbehind the third placed car and just aminute separated us from the victori-ous car, which coincidentally was alsoa Cayenne Turbo.

They were certainly right when theydescribed the route as an “endurancechallenge for man and machine” in1968. But back then, nobody could

and Driver’s Cup II series met withgreat enthusiasm. From exclusivedrives with instructors to section train-ing to 30 minute tests of driving styleand time trials, everyone got their money’s worth and experienced puremotorsport feeling.

The professionals with racing licenceshad the chance to compete in variousseries. Whether it was the Driver’sChallenge, Sports Cup, Super SportsCup of the Sports Cup Endurance longdistance race – there was somethingfor everyone. Particularly in the topseries the Super Sports Cup and thelong distance race, there were someexciting battles for positions. Over 40competitors fought for points, fameand honour.

The Porsche Sports Cup, an initiativeby Porsche Deutschland in co-opera-tion with the Porsche Club Deutsch-land, fills the gap between the PorscheSports Driving School and the PorscheSports Cup. From now on, customerswill have the opportunity to apply thedriving skills gained during various

courses at the Porsche Sports DrivingSchool in the Porsche Sports Cup.

Anyone who wants to enter thePorsche Sports Cup series that requirea racing licence can complete a courseat the Porsche Sports Driving Schoolto qualify.

Motorsport greats like Altfrid Hegerand Jürgen Barth are responsible for the professional running of thePorsche Sports Cup. And in line withthe motto “After the race is before therace”, the participants are alreadyexcited about the season’s secondSports Cup. On 11th and 12th June2005 at the Hockenheim Ring, theywill once again hear those famouswords: Gentlemen, start your engines!

A new element has been added toPorsche’s racing activities: The PorscheSports Cup has started in Germany!These races are ideal for drivers whoare keen on motorsport – the empha-sis is on sportiness and driving pleas-ure. As well asdriving style tests and time trials, theprogramme includes sprint races,which require a licence, and the high-light of the weekend – a long-distancerace with compulsory pit stop tochange drivers.

The start of the Porsche Sports Cupfrom 8 th to 10 th April 2005 at theEurospeedway in Lausitz far exceededall expectations. More than 70 entrantshad the chance to prove their skills in six different series. I sent off the questionnaire in August2003 but when I hadn’t heard anythingby Christmas I thought that was it. ButI was wrong. It was the following spring.My wife Cate checked our post box onthe way to work and as she had leftsome documents for the office athome, she came back. “There’s a let-ter here from Porsche”, she told me.Once she had gone, I looked throughthe post and noticed that the letter shementioned was postmarked Germany.I opened it and I could hardly believemy eyes: I had won the top prize – thefive day “Porsche Camp Cayenne” inSpain.

First of all, I told Cate and then I calledPorsche AG in Germany. But nobodyanswered the phone. In my excitementI had forgotten about the time differ-ence. So I wrote an e-mail and the next day I got the confirmation from

Winners of the Prize Draw for the Porsche Club Survey2003/2004

Some time ago now, the Club Co-ordi-nation sent questionnaires out toPorsche Club members, with the aimof optimising the co-operation betweenthe Clubs and Porsche. Everyone whocompleted the extensive questionnairewas entered into a prize draw to winsome attractive holidays.

The winners of the three top prizeshave shared their experiences with us– read them for yourself:

Germany. I planned to combine the tripwith a visit to my son in London and a factory tour in Stuttgart, and thePorsche Travel Club helped me organ-ise everything. However, I then receivedthe news that the “Porsche CampCayenne” had to be cancelled.

“What would you like to do instead?”, I was asked. “How about three days in a Cup car on the test track?” I sug-gested. There was a moment of silenceat the other end of the line. Had I over-stepped the mark? “We were thinkingof ‘Camp 4’ in Finland with a Carrera 4and Cayenne in the snow, somethingthat you can't do in Australia”, camethe counter proposal. I took a few sec-onds to conceal my childish delightand then said, as composed as possi-ble, “Yes, please”.

Hervé Berthault from France wonthe second prize, a "Porsche Dis-covery Tour" worth 2,100.– Euro.He writes:

During the Porsche Club Days 2003 inFrancorchamps, I had completed a survey about the Porsche Clubs to winone of the pins celebrating the anniver-sary of the 911. To my surprise, a fewmonths later I received a letter fromPorsche AG to tell me that I had wonsecond prize in the draw: a four day“Porsche Discovery Tour” through thePorsche Travel Club.

At the beginning of April 2004, I arrivedin Ludwigsburg, the starting point forthe tour, where I met our guide HaraldBecker and the other travellers. ThenI took my place in a fantastic, midnightblue 996 Carrera 4S Cabriolet Tiptronic,which would belong to me for the nextfour days. At that moment, I thought itwas the best 911 ever and very dif-ferent from the 964 Carrera 4 that Iown myself. The first day’s destinationwas Salzburg. A drive along idylliccountry roads and German autobahnsgave me the chance to enjoy both theopen roof and the 320 BHP of the 911.

The second stage took us to Vienna,along the Danube and through beauti-ful scenery. An unbelievably large andluxurious suite awaited me at the Hotel

Sacher. Then it was time for a city tour,a champagne reception and dinner inthe hotel – with the legendary Sacher-torte chocolate cake for dessert.

The following day, we headed forMunich and got to know the BavarianAlps and the next day we returned toLudwigsburg. Then came the most dif-ficult moment of the trip: handing backthe ignition key. With plenty of memo-ries in my luggage, I set off for home.

A few months later, I became the proudowner of a beautiful black 996. Thecar had captivated me completely dur-ing the tour.

Thomas Unterbusch from Germanywon third prize, “Porsche WinterTraining” worth 1,590.– Euro.

Originally, my father won the prize, buthe gave it to me as a present: threedays of “winter training” in Austria. Onthe Sunday, the participants in theevent met up at the Brandlhof in Saal-felden. Everyone was already excitedabout the following day’s driver train-ing, which would be held on theÖAMTC’s training track. The vehiclesavailable were the Porsche Boxsterand the Porsche 911 Type 996 and997.

I drove a 997 with Tiptronic. AlthoughI had briefly driven the car once before,it was only here that I really learned toappreciate it. Under the guidance oftwo instructors, we practiced control-ling the vehicle on snow and ice, butalso on asphalt. The site provided plen-ty of opportunities, for example a han-dling course, an ice surface and a snowcourse. It was a fascinating experienceto drive a vehicle at the very limits inthose conditions – in short it was agreat event.

This year’s Techno Classica, the globaloldtimer exhibition in Essen, set new re-cords: 1,021 exhibitors from 15 coun-tries, including over 130 Clubs andrestorers, 2,500 vehicles on displayand 141,000 visitors – fantastic totals.

The Porsche marque enjoyed a partic-ularly successful appearance with itsstand in one of the nicest halls. Justthe vehicles from the eight PorscheClubs represented made the hearts ofPorsche fans from all over the worldbeat faster – they included a red 968Coupé, a white 928 GTS, a 911 RSSafari works car and the Diesel Stan-dard.

A member of the Porsche Club GreatBritain circled the 944 Turbo S on dis-play with great interest and asked forsome technical details. Walter Näherhad to constantly repeat the history ofhis orange 914-6 GT works rally carand, as Udo Breuer from the Porsche914 Club reports, another reason for

the numerous conversations that theClub representatives were engaged inwas that “people kept making offersto buy the cars”.

Some visitors made contact with thePorsche Club Co-ordination or evenjoined one of the Porsche ClassicClubs at the exhibition. After three ofthe four days of the exhibition, MargittaBeil-Hildebrand from the Porsche 356Club Deutschland was pleased toreport that “we already have nine newmembers”. The Club had brought asmart 356 A Convertible D to Essenwith them.

Anyone who wanted information aboutrestoration or spare parts for a classicPorsche was given expert advice bythe staff from the Customer Centre. APorsche Carrera RS 2.7 restored inthe factory was used to illustrate theirexplanations. Directly adjacent to theadvice counter, visitors experiencedPorsche spare parts production live.Two employees demonstrated howmuch work and skill is required to cover a steering wheel or the cassettebox in a Porsche 928 in leather.

Other highlights of the stand includeda Porsche 935 Baby with 1.4 litre turboengine from the museum and a current911 Carrera refined with parts from

the Exclusive range. We should alsomention the Porsche Design Driver’sSelection direct sales truck, wherethere were lively sales of the popularPorsche accessories.

In summary: Techno Classica is alwayswell worth a visit for Porsche fans.

Porsche Classics

Retro Classics 2005 in Stuttgart

Oldtimers are as popular as ever – thisfact was forcefully underlined by thefifth Retro Classics exhibition, whichwas held from 11th to 13th March2005. More than 35,000 visitors fromGermany and other countries, includ-ing some from the People’s Republicof China, were attracted to the Killes-

berg in Stuttgart by the range of 450exhibitors, clubs and service providers.There is no doubt that the Porschestand was one of the big attractions atthe exhibition, and featured factoryrestoration, Porsche Classic originalparts and Porsche Design Driver’sselection direct sales appearing under

the combined banner of the CustomerCentre for the first time.

The public were particularly keen onthe vehicles from the Porsche muse-um that were on display, based aroundthe main theme of “8 cylinder engines”– including the only 904 produced withthis engine type, which was deliveredto King Hussein of Jordan in 1964 anda 908/2 Spyder from 1969. However,it was a 718/8 RS Spyder from 1962under restoration in the Porsche Customer Centre that attracted themost interest of all. This car, whichwon the European mountain champ-ionship in 1963 and 1964 and was given the pet name Grandma becauseof its countless racing appearances,was constantly surrounded by curiousonlookers and impressively demon-strated the Porsche Customer Centre’sknow-how when it comes to restora-tion.

Porsche quality standards: it was asectional model, consisting of a doorand parts of the adjoining wing from aPorsche 911, with multiple layers ofpaint.

Of course, staff from the CustomerCentre were on hand throughout the exhibition to help and advise thevisitors. For example, the owner of a914/6 asked for advice about a con-stantly fouled spark plug and a gentle-man from Switzerland wanted to knowwhether he could bring his 356 to thefactory for restoration. The enthusiasmof some people for the Porsche marqueis shown by the example of a GermanPorsche owner, who produced photosof a 356 he had discovered in Regens-burg. The vehicle had been standing inthe open air for an eternity and restora-tion was no longer worthwhile, but thePorsche fan rescued the 356 anywayto keep it in its current state – as akind of work of art.

As always, there were plenty ofenquiries about the availability, prices

the successful appearance at theevent: “The Stuttgart exhibition hasestablished itself as a meeting pointfor the oldtimer scene in Southern Ger-many and provides an excellent oppor-tunity for us to enjoy direct contactwith Porsche lovers and owners.”

A current 911 Carrera refined withcomponents from the Exclusive rangewas also presented on the stand, creating a bridge to the modern era,and it was studied with considerableinterest by visitors. And anyone whowas looking for an appropriate sou-venir could get their hands on one ofthe many Porsche accessories avail-able from the Porsche Design Driver’sSelection mobile direct sales stand.

For the Porsche team itself, there weretwo very special souvenirs: the prizefor the best exhibitor’s stand at RetroClassics and a special prize “for pio-neering technology”, which was award-ed to the Porsche 908/2 Spyder thatwas on display. Wolfgang Streufertfrom the Porsche Customer Centre inPlant 1 was more than satisfied with
