Sustainable cloud services for bringing High Performance casting simulations to the SMEs

• This industry is dominated by SMEs (80% of production).• Typical metal casting defects are air entrapment,

porosity and cold shots

• A barrier to the wider uptake of simulation in this sector is the cost of hardware and software packages.

• Cloud-based-HPC pay-per-use service which would make the simulations more widely accessible, particularly to SMEs.

• End-users would be able to enhance and optimise their cast artefacts avoiding typical defects.

• Fundiciones de Roda is in charge of validate the solution.

6

Quantech is a Spanish SME which markets software to model the metal-casting process.

StamHPC - HPC for the Metal Stamping Industry

Quantech is a Spanish SME which markets software to model the metal-stamping process.

• The metal-forming industry requires the simulation of bigger and more complex cases which cannot be solved in a reasonable time with the computing resources available to most companies.

• HPC techniques will allow the sheet metal forming industry to reduce considerably the computation time, and therefore the time to market.

• Software migration from Windows to a Linux HPC environment.

• HPC-cloud-based solution bringing results from a remote Cloud-based-HPC system to the desktop.

• MATRICI is the experiment end-user. It is an international company and reference partner for dies ready for immediate occupancy in the production of bodyworks in the car industry.

Emo is a Slovenian SME specialising in the production of tools and dies for the automobile industry.

• Emo production processes use laser-based metal deposition techniques. It is necessary to gather and interpret the various process parameters. This results in significant volumes of data.

• The objective is to process these data (thermal high-speed image sequences and 3D profiles) using an HPC-based cloud.

• This will enable the use of machine-learning techniques to extract relevant information and to understand better the interrelations between the various process parameters.

EPC is a major provider of camshafts for the naval and automotive industries.

• The use of 3D-measuring equipment for quality control results in the acquisition of massive amounts of data.

• Current software solutions are not able to process the information in production time-scales.

• Cloud-based HPC technology provides a suitable framework to get as much benefit as possible from the data collected

• This case study will show that HPC technology enables manufacturing industries to exploit big data files and consequently generate new know-how about their manufacturing processes.

Maderas Besteiro, is a Spanish SME focused on leading-edge timber designs for different structures.

• The construction market in general and timber in particular is moving towards prefabrication to reduce labour costs and make onsite assembly up to 80% faster.

• Low efficiency due to a massive waste of wood, excessive number of joints and large thickness plates to achieve the required insulation.

• The main objective is to simulate a box-framed design coupling structural analysis with simulations of soundproofing, underfloor heating, fire resistance and vibration.

• A complex multi-physics approach is needed which needs cloud-based HPC to deliver results within the timeframe and accuracy required.
