Words are very powerful. They may be clever, entertaining, articulate, or

informative, but they have the poser and authority to change our hearts and minds only

when we really hear them.

Today's Scripture talks about what that means. In the Old Testament, Ezra the

priest stood before all the people who had just returned from a long exile in a foreign land. He read aloud to them

from Scripture all day long, and the wept with joy at the beauty and meaning of those words. In the Gospel Jesus

read from the book of the prophet Isaiah, in the synagogue in his home town. They listened in rapt attention to

those beautiful images and promises, with their eyes fixed on him.

When Jesus set down the scroll and told the audience “these words are fulfilled in your hearing,” he wasn't

pointing to himself and saying “look at me – I'm the Messiah.” He was pointing at his listeners, and telling then that

these powerful promises will only be fulfilled if they heard and understood them, and put them into practice.

If the good news of the Gospel is ever to be fulfilled, two things are needed: people who teach it, and people

who hear it. Words carry incredible meaning and can be life-changing, but only if they are spoken from the heart,

and only when we allow them to touch our hearts.

The Barnabas Ball Our Parish Dinner Dance, the “Barnabas Ball” will take place on Saturday evening, February 13 in the Emerald

Room at Gaelic Park. I hope you are planning to come! It will be a beautiful and festive celebration, with fine food,

good music, and great company. The Barnabas Ball is a not a fund-raiser, but a “friend-raiser,” a wonderful

opportunity enjoy each other’s friendship in an elegant evening out, and celebrate 85 years of life as a parish

family.

Time is short! Gather your table group and make your reservations soon. Tickets and information about the

Barnabas Ball will be available in the Church lobby after Mass this weekend. Full details can also be found

elsewhere in this bulletin.

I look forward to being with you at the Barnabas Ball!

Dear Friends: We are excited about the response to our 2010 Stewardship Renewal Campaign. To date, we

have received over 400 pledge cards and are quickly approaching our goal of having 600

families renew their commitment as active parishioners of St. Barnabas.

Thank you to all the families that turned in their 2010 Stewardship Renewal Pledge Cards so

far. We appreciate your commitment to our parish and generous support!

Pledging your commitment to stewardship strengthens our parish and enables us to continue to

do God’s work. In fact, your pledge card helps our parish in some very specific ways:

Ensures an accurate listing of active parishioners

Helps us project the parish operating budget for the upcoming year

Gives us a picture of how many people are in a position to volunteer

Assists us in forecasting the growth (or contraction) of parish ministries

Guides our planning of annual events and fundraising activities

It is an extraordinary time to be a part of the St. Barnabas family. Through your generous gifts

of time, talent, and treasure we are able to support many wonderful ministries that truly

“make a difference” in people’s lives. I look forward to working with each of you as we

strengthen our parish and build the future of St. Barnabas.

In Christ,

2010

WOMEN’S CLUB

Barbara Rinella, dynamic book dramatist, academic entertainer, makes her captivating

return for St. Barnabas Women's Club on Wednesday, February 3rd at 10 a.m. to perform

her ever-so-popular one-woman show on Lisa See's fascinating new novel, Shanghai Girls.

The dramatization: Remember – a sister is for life. Do you have a sister? Is she the pretty one? Ms. Rinella will take

the role of the older sister, 21 year old Pearl, the college graduate, born in the year of the Dragon, bookish, responsible,

somber and certainly not as strikingly beautiful as her younger sister, 18 year old May, born in the year of the Sheep, and

her father’s favorite. The book itself is a journey for two sisters who travel from 1937 Shanghai to Los Angeles in the

40s and 50s. It's a story of dreams dashed, powerful survival, sibling rivalry, history and love.

Purchase your ticket by: (1) Returning $10 check made payable to “St. Barnabas Women’s Club,” in an envelope

marked "Women’s Club, Fran Kaberna, c/o Anne Kaberna, Rm 211." (2) Contact Fran Kaberna directly at (773) 238-

1923. No need to be a Women’s Club member to attend. Feel free to invite your sister(s), friend(s), etc. However, please

RSVP by Jan. 29th.

for men and women who have the

time and interest to attend meetings

during the day. We do not meet

during January and February because

of the weather.

The first meeting of 2010 will be

held in the chapel on March 2nd , the

first Tuesday of the month. The

meeting will start with Mass at 10

a.m. followed by a presentation

appropriate to Lent. A box lunch will

be provided in the church hall and

there will be time for discussion after

lunch.

On Tuesday, April 6, Kate Walsh

will talk about her experience in

Uganda .

2010 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS “…they left everything and followed Him.” (Luke 5:11)

Many of our parishioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from

Cardinal George. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2010 Annual

Catholic Appeal. The Annual Catholic Appeal is the largest philanthropic

source of financial support for ALL of the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese.

This year, the theme of the Appeal is, “…they left everything and followed

Him.” Our gifts are to be given in gratitude for what God has given us. A gift to

the Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministry

to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese. Please prayerfully consider

a pledge to the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal.

As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the

parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also

Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one

body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and

we were all given to drink of one Spirit.1 Cor 12:12-13
