SAINT POLYCARP (died 155) February 23 “Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and he never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” Boldly answering the official who demanded he worship pagan gods, Polycarp, today’s “Senior Citizen Saint,” demonstrates that courage, far from being the preserve of the young, is a virtue cultivated through lifelong fidelity and crowned by final perseverance. A disciple of Saint John, who is said to have consecrated him bishop of Smyrna in modern-day Turkey, Polycarp witnesses to the truth that, whatever time and space may separate us, Jesus’ gift of the Eucharist unites us. Polycarp’s final words, preserved by the Church of Smyrna, sound like a Eucharistic Prayer in which the saint offers himself: “Lord, almighty God, Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to the knowledge of yourself . . . may I be received among the martyrs as a rich and pleasing sacrifice . . . through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ . . . through him be glory to you, together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY HUMOR A priest is driving down a highway when a state trooper stops him for speeding. The trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and spots an empty wine bottle rolling around on the floor of the car. He says, "Father, have you been drinking?" The priest replies, "Just water! The trooper asks, "Then why do I smell wine?" The priest looks down at the bottle and says, "Good Lord, He's done it again!" PRAYER FOR CORONAVIRUS VIRTUAL STREAMING SCHEDULE Prayer in the Time of the Coronavirus

Most Reverend José H. Gomez-Archbishop of Los Angeles

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,

as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world,

and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels,

that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted,

we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful,

wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be

patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our

hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother,

health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,

keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus.

Amen.

March 24, 2020 My Dear Parishioners, Blessings to you! The current spread of the Corona Virus has tremendously affected our daily lives. The government officials and leaders in our communities have made hard choices and painful decisions in an attempt to keep us safe. Taking into considerations the current public health emergency situation, our Archbishop José H. Gomez has temporarily suspended public celebration of the Mass in our Archdiocese effective March 17, 2020 until March 29, 2020, or otherwise extended. Our Archbishop has stressed that this decision was “not made lightly,” and that it was made after “much prayer and reflection” and in consultation with the Archdiocese's auxiliary bishops, Council of Priests, lay advisors, and government and public health officials. In lieu of this, our Parish weekend and weekday Masses are suspended until March 29, 2020, or otherwise extended. However, we will live stream our own Parish Mass, daily at 8:00 am, Stations of the Cross on the Fridays during Lent at 5:30 pm, followed by a Mass at 6:00 pm and on Sundays at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. We have also added daily Rosary at 6:00 pm. You can participate in these Masses from your home via the internet through FACEBOOK LIVE, by visiting this website: facebook.com/stbarnabaslb/ Although you may not receive Holy Communion, you will be making a profound act of spiritual Communion with your Priests and our beloved Parish Community, and more importantly have an opportunity to keep the Lord’s Day Holy. In addition, our Archdiocese also provides a livestream of Masses from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels daily and on Sunday via Facebook, @lacatholics, (facebook.com/lacatholics/) or visit lacatholics.org/emergency/ The daily Mass (M-F) in English at 12:10 p.m. and the Sunday Masses in English at 10 a.m. and in Spanish at 12:30 p.m. will be livestreamed. For more information on additional Mass broadcasts on TV and radio, visit lacatholics.org/emergency. For those who could not participate in the Holy Mass via the internet, I strongly encourage you to read the Scripture readings, reflect on it, and pray with your family making an act of spiritual communion with your Priests and our Parish Community. The daily readings are printed in our bulletin and could be accessed on our website: www.stbarnabaslb.org. Readings could also be accessed at www.usccb.org The Lenten communal penance service has been cancelled, and all Confessions that were previously scheduled. Please continue to be safe at home, as much as possible, keep the social distancing from one another and observe all the sanitary protocol. Fr. Bernard and I will respond to all the sick calls. However, if it is not a life-threatening situation, kindly wait for a couple of weeks before requesting for a priest. Unless it is an emergency, all baptism schedules are suspended until further notice. If you scheduled a wedding or quinceañera in the coming days, please call the parish office for an important update. With regards to the Holy Week celebrations and Easter, our Archdiocese will issue updates, as this is changing daily. So kindly expect an update on this when it is available. Please know that Fr. Bernard and I are praying for your safety and well-being in our private daily Masses. Kindly pray for us as well. Please be safe and we will see you soon. With Blessings, Rev. Antony Gaspar Pastor

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NOTICE March 23, 2020 Dear Faithful Members of our Catholic School Communities: The past two weeks have represented the very best of our Catholic schools. Never has so much been asked by so many and done by so few in such a short period of time. A coalition of parents, teachers, pastors, school leaders and archdiocesan staff have been on the front lines every day working together under seemingly impossible circumstances to ensure students are cared for and educated remotely. You’ve shown that impossible can be overcome with love, patience, and compassion toward one another. Our schools represent the true nature of the ministry of the Catholic Church. Forty of our schools are feeding thousands of our most vulnerable children daily, regardless of what community they belong to. We’ve seen the personal sacrifice of staff and families sharing with one another, giving what they can to help a neighbor. We’ve seen resolve over fear; confidence over uncertainty; and, love over loss since the crisis began. While this invisible threat continues to challenge us in every which way, God is present in our daily work. Because of the strength of our faith we will not falter, we will not rest; we will accept only the best for our students and our ministry. Our Church and our schools are stronger because of your resilience as a whole community. Know that the love, faith and gratitude for all that you have done during these trying times is abundant throughout our Archdiocese – you are doing God’s work in an exceptional way. THANK YOU! In this time of crisis, our priorities must be clear – we will: 1) Protect the health and safety of our students, staff and our families; 2) Support the integrity of student learning; and, 3) Protect our ministry from the consequences of this crisis. As we move into the second week of remote learning and the public health response intensifies, I want to share some important information with you. Since the announcement of the suspension of in-person instruction on March 13, it’s been our collective commitment to make remote instruction a success for our students. We knew March 31 was dependent on further guidance from public health officials. As we learned on March 19, the “Safer at Home” orders issued by county and state officials intensified the fight against transmission of COVID-19. However, a number of these orders were in conflict requiring further clarity by the Archdiocese. On March 21, the Los Angeles County Office of Public Health issued revised guidance to conform with California Health and Safety Code and other city and county orders which includes “Educational Institutions”: UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE CALIFORNIA HEALTH AND SAFETY CODE SECTIONS 101040, 101085, AND 120175, effective immediately on March 21, 2020 and continuing through April 19, 2020, all public and private group events and gatherings are prohibited. Section 13. For purposes of this Order, Essential Businesses are defined as the following: (j) Educational institutions (including public and private K-12 schools, colleges, and universities) for purposes of facilitating distance learning, providing meals for pick-up, or performing essential functions, provided that social distancing is practiced. As a result of the revised statewide “Safer at Home” order, remote learning will be extended through Sunday, April 19. Our intent is to resume in-person instruction on Monday, April 20,

but much will depend on orders from public health officials at that time. We are committed to returning to on-campus instruction as soon as we can, but we must prepare for further extensions. Until then, we will maintain our remote learning programs and keep our families engaged, connected and learning together. We understand that some public school districts and private schools have identified alternative dates to reopen. Guidance and orders from public health officials have informed our decisions from the beginning of the crisis. As such, our return date is based on the most recent order from officials stated above. We are working closely with our philanthropic partners to support our students, our school workforce and the future of our system. As we consider the significant impact this crisis will have on our communities, our goal is to build a coalition to create a safety net for our most needy students and staff. This work started as the crisis unfolded and will evolve in the coming weeks. We encourage you to speak as one community – parents, alumni, parishioners, and community stakeholders about supporting your school in any way they can. Now is the time for everyone to do their part to protect the gift of a Catholic education. Despite the uncertainty we face, we know this crisis WILL END. When it does, we will welcome our students, staff and families back to our campuses and greet them with the warm embrace of Christ’s love. The decisions we make today will ensure this outcome is a reality at our schools. God bless you, your family, our students and our community as we work together to end the COVID-19 crisis. Yours in Christ, Paul M. Escala Superintendent of Schools The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:1-4
