NEW! Church in Latin America Collection

A message from Bishop Baker:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The family around the world today faces tremendous challenges. In Latin America, where Christian values remain important, many families are wounded by hostility from the surrounding environment and by broken relationships within the family. Yet throughout the hemisphere, the Church continues to point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing within the family and in society. Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America offer families and communities a way to strengthen, affirm, and celebrate their life together in faith, offering a different and hopeful vision of relationships with one another and with God. Our diocese will take up this collection the weekend of January 24-25. Please be generous in collection and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your help will truly make a difference. Together, let us ask the Lord and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, to continue to bless us in all that we do.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Baker, S.T.D. Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama

Save the Date – Men’s Conference

The 12th annual “Strong Men, Strong Faith” conference will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Hoover on Monday, February 16 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. This will be an excellent way to prepare for the season of Lent (which begins on Wednesday, February 18, just two days later). The speaker this year will be Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers. Ladies, please encourage your husbands, fathers, and sons to go! More information will be provided during the coming weeks.

A non-perishable canned food donation will also be appreciated. There will also be prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Security will be provided. Father Jerabek’s Vacation Time

HELP! One Voice

The diocesan newspaper, One Voice, is sent free of charge to all Catholics in the diocese. But did you know that each parish pays for its parishioners’ subscriptions, and that each issue costs $0.37? Please consider using the One Voice envelope next weekend to make a donation that will help offset this expense. And if you are not receiving the paper and would like to, call the church office to sign up. Thanks!

Our Wonderful Catholic Faith

Memento

It happened on two occasions when I lived in Rome that, as I was proceeding from the sacristy to the altar in some big basilica to celebrate Mass, another priest who was passing by said to me “Memento” (Latin for remember [me]). Although I knew what he meant by it – I’ll talk about that in a moment – I did not initially know how to respond. I later learned the traditional response, “Deus exaudiat”: May God hear [your prayers].

Why would the priest say that to me as I was going to celebrate Holy Mass? Well, because he wanted me to pray for him at the altar. But how could I do that if I already had a Mass intention for which I was celebrating? This is where a bit of history comes in. Until November 30, 1969 (the First Sunday of Advent – the day on which the new order of the Mass came into effect), there was only one Eucharistic Prayer – what is now our “First Eucharistic Prayer”, also known as the “Roman Canon”. And in that Eucharistic Prayer there are two pauses: one before the Consecration, when we pray for the living, and one after the Consecration, when we pray for the dead. Both of these remembrances, in Latin, begin with the word “memento”. So when a priest said to another priest “memento”, he wanted him to remember his special intentions during the Remembrance of the Living at Mass.

We have several Eucharistic Prayers in the new order of the Mass, and the Roman Canon, or First Eucharistic Prayer, is perhaps no longer used as often as it should be; I do try to use it occasionally on Sundays and major feast days. It is a venerable and beautiful prayer with a long history in the Church’s liturgical tradition.

So when you are at Mass and the Roman Canon is used, remember to pray for your special intentions for the living and deceased during those pauses that I mentioned. And maybe, when praying for the deceased, pray also for the countless priests who have uttered this Eucharistic Prayer at altars around the world down through the ages. Memento!
