quicklyexportexistingstoragessuchasdiskimages,VHDfiles,physicaldisks,partitions,CD/DVDROMs,
tapesoranyothertypeofSCSIbaseddevicesandevenavarietyofpopularCD/DVDimagestotheclient
machines.Thesoftwarethusdeliversimmediatebenefits,asitallowsstoragetobeconsolidated,
virtualizedandcentrallymanaged.iStorageServeralsoprovidesRAID1(mirror)featureenablingyouto
createtwoiSCSIdevicesformirrorbackup.
Highavailabilityclusters(alsoknownasHAClustersorFailoverClusters)arecomputerclustersthatare
implementedprimarilyforthepurposeofprovidinghighavailabilityofserviceswhichthecluster
provides.Theyoperatebyhavingredundantcomputersornodeswhicharethenusedtoprovideservice
whensystemcomponentsfail.Normally,ifaserverwithaparticularapplicationcrashes,theapplication
willbeunavailableuntilsomeonefixesthecrashedserver.HAclusteringremediesthissituationby
detectinghardware/softwarefaults,andimmediatelyrestartingtheapplicationonanothersystem
withoutrequiringadministrativeintervention,aprocessknownasFailover.Aspartofthisprocess,
clusteringsoftwaremayconfigurethenodebeforestartingtheapplicationonit.Forexample,
appropriatefilesystemsmayneedtobeimportedandmounted,networkhardwaremayhavetobe
configured,andsomesupportingapplicationsmayneedtoberunningaswell.
