Prlogo

Este libro va ms all de lo que suelen ofrecer las guas corrien-tes para turistas. Para la persona que ya sabe ingls, esosmanuales convencionales no servirn de mucho, pues se limitana largas enumeraciones de comidas, ropas o las frases ms usua-les como Gracias, seora y Por favor, camarero. Para eso, nose necesita una gua, sino un diccionario.Quien ya sabe ingls, desea ampliar su vocabulario, pero tam-bin quiere conocer modismos, usos y costumbres, lugares, etc.En definitiva, desea que se le d una idea de cmo es la vida enel pas que va a visitar y que se le indique qu hacer en cualquiersituacin corriente que pueda presentarse. Por ejemplo, adnde ir si se tiene un espantoso dolor de muelas? Cmo com-portarse si nos invitan a una cena familiar? Y cmo explicarle ala polica que el otro conductor es el culpable del accidente queacabamos de sufrir? Todo esto y mucho ms puede sucederdurante un mes de estancia en cualquier pas de nuestro agita-do planeta.

In hand he has hispassport where several weeks ago they stamped his entry visa.Now the stewardess gives him a card he must fill out.A bit later, in the airport building, he passes through passportcontrol where an official asks him these questions:

Luis gets a taxi quickly. The driver sees his complicationswith luggage, bags and the rest, so he gets out to help him.

Now more relaxed, he decides to eat in his room, since heis tired and wants to sleep early. He calis room service.

Por la maana, despiertan puntualmente a Luis, que ha dor-mido de un tirn. Apenas ha terminado de afeitarse y asearse,cuando llaman a la puerta para traerle el desayuno.

In the morning they awake Luis punctually. He has slept likea log. He has scarcely finished shaving and washing when theycall at the door to bring him his breakfast.

Luis is not used to eating so much in the morning. But hemakes an effort, because he wants to get accustomed to thehabits of the country. When he is finished he thinks he will noteat anything else all day long.

Para Luis representa toda una novedad entrar en la farma-cia. Parece como si all hubiera de todo lo que se puede necesi-tar en esta vida. Desde aspirinas hasta un helado.

As es, adems de los medicamentos que se despachan conreceta, en el mostrador y en las estanteras hay diversos medi-camentos de uso corriente, como aspirinas, tabletas para dormir,antispticos, tiritas, vendas. Tambin hay una enorme variedadde golosinas: chocolates, pastillas, caramelos, chicles en todaslas formas, sabores y colores. Si se tiene la desgracia de que serompa una media, all encontrar otro par que la reemplace.Jabones, pinturas, pegamentos, artculos de tocador... En fin,todo lo que uno pueda imaginarse que cabe en un espacio tanpequeo.

Luis encuentra enseguida sus aspirinas y, aunque desayunopparamente, cree que un helado le vendr muy bien parahacer frente al calor. Se sienta en las altas banquetas que estnante el mostrador y un amable camarero le atiende.

- Qu desea, seor?- Un helado.- De qu sabor? Con crema o sin ella? Quiere chocolatederretido? Le gustan las almendras o los cacahuetes? Going into a pharmacy is something completely new forLuis. It seems like it has everything you might need for the restof your life. From aspirin to ice-cream.

That is the way it is. Besides the medicines sold by prescrip-tion, at the counter and on the shelves there is regular medicinelike aspirin, sleeping tablets, antiseptics, band-aids and banda-ges. There is also an enormous variety of sweets: chocolates,candies, bon-bons, gums in all sorts of forms, flavors and colors.If you unfortunately have a hole in your sock, you will findanother pair there. Soap, make-up, glue, toiletries. In the finalanalysis, everything you might imagine in such a small space.

Luis finds his aspirin at once and, although he had a tre-mendous breakfast, he thinks he would like an ice-cream to helphim do battle with the heat. He sits on one of the high stools atthe counter and a pleasant waiter serves him.
