16 May 2014, 6:00 pmGergiev – A Certain Madness

The road movie documents the two-week train journey throughout Rus-sia by St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre orchestra together with its conductor. The orchestra is seen as an instrument; its conductor, Valery Gergiev, gives his all – and demands everything from his musicians. The music of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Shchedrin is merged with the sounds of industry and the moving train. Everything becomes music.Director: Alberto Venzago

15 May 2014, 6:00 pmFreddie Mercury: The Great Pretender

The story of Queen is much told, but this new documentary focuses on Freddie and the solo projects he worked on, outside of the band. Using extensive archive footage of interviews with Freddie as well as concerts, video shoots and person-al material – much of it previous-ly unseen – along with new inter-views with friends and colleagues, a picture emerges of a man who was very different to his flamboy-ant stage persona. This portrait re-veals the man behind the superstar image, The Great Pretender.Director: Rhys Thomas

New DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Claudio Abbado – Lucerne Festival 2013:The Last Video Recording

With his unique “mysterious seduc-tive power and legendary elegance” (Le Monde), Claudio Abbado, for the last time, opened the Lucerne Festi-val in the summer of 2013 – only a few months later, the world had to bid farewell to a monumental art-ist, great conductor and orchestra founder. This record, released on DVD/Blu-ray in May/June at ACCEN-TUS Music, is the last audio-visual documentation of his work. Once again, it captures the extraordinary atmosphere of vibrant emotionality that always emerged when Abbado created music with his “orchestra of friends”.

amarcordThe Book Of Madrigals

In its Book of Madrigals (DVD/Blu-ray Release: May 2014), a cappella ensemble amarcord presents mag-nificent compositions from the Eu-ropean Renaissance by Dowland, di

Lasso, Gabrieli, Gesualdo, Josquin a.o., recorded in Palladio’s splendid Renaissance Villa Godi. Performers include Hille Perl (viola da gamba), the American lutenist Lee Santana and percussionist Michael Metzler.

Riccardo Chailly & Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra: Mahler 5

Continuing the award-winning Leip-zig Mahler cycle… – available from May/June. Bonus: Riccardo Chailly on his interpretation of Mahler’s 5th Symphony.

Bruckner's 7th Symphony

With the release of Bruckner’s 7th Symphony in April, ACCENTUS Mu-sic presents the fourth part of its cy-cle Bruckner – The Mature Sympho-nies with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin. The Guardian calls Daniel Baren-boim’s London interpretation "Tre-mendous … Barenboim and the Staatskapelle seem to have this work in their systems, and the overall im-pression was of music unfolding or-ganically at its own pace rather than of a work being self-consciously in-terpreted or led."

phers. Her choreographies surprise with ever-new formations, deep sub-jects and stunning aesthetic style. CLASART CLASSIC

WertherStarring Jonas Kaufmann And Sophie Koch

From the current Met-season: Mas-senet's sublime adaptation of Go-ethe's revolutionary and tragic ro-mance Werther. Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role of the tortured poet with the “dark, resonant timb-re of his tenor that gives him weight; its swordlike directness makes him unstoppable. Every moment has the exact vocal color it needs” (The Wall Street Journal).

Richard Eyre, whose hit production of Bizet’s Carmen premiered at the Met in 2010, returns to direct the first new Met production of Werther in more than forty years. “Mr. Eyre’s production, while essentially traditi-onal, uses video imaginatively and has touches of modern imagery. Mr. Eyre deserves unreserved credit for the detailed and involving per-formances he draws from his cast” (The New York Times).

French mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch, one of the world’s leading interpre-ters of Charlotte, makes her Met debut as the object of Werther’s unrequited love, in a cast that also includes Lisette Oropesa as Sophie, Serbian bass David Bižić in his Met

MAKIDO FILM

Minds Apart – Richard Strauss And Kurt Weill

Geister, Die Sich Schei-den – Richard Strauss Und Kurt Weill

Richard Strauss and Kurt Weill – two composers, who were equally fa-

mous as they were different. While Strauss became the president of the German Chamber of Music in 1933, Weill fled from the National Socia-lists to Paris and later to the United States of America. Both created memorable works. While Strauss had ignored the poli-tical situation for a long time, Weill had actively criticized politics and society. One of them created The Knight of the Rose and the other one The Threepenny Opera.

In this context, the documentary by Michael Pfeifenberger for makido film poses the question: Which poli-tical responsibility for art – in former times and nowadays? Which purpo-se does art serve? May an artist re-main neutral or does an artist bear societal responsibility? Is the creati-on of music an end in itself or does it have to serve a bigger purpose?

Among the interviewees are ope-ra stars Angela Denoke and Anna Prohaska, conductor Adam Fischer and the former concertmaster of the Viennese Philharmonics, Walter Barylli. The music scientist Christian

Heindl, Weill-perfomer Carmen Ma-ja-Antoni, Richard Strauss’ grandson Christian Strauss and Weill-expert Giselher Schubert also get a chance to speak.

Length: 52 min. A production of ma-kido film, ZDF/3Sat and Unitel.

Richard Strauss * 11 June 1864

In June 2014, we celebrate the anni-versary of a legendary composer: the 150th birthday of Richard Strauss. 3Sat already starts the celebration on 5 April 2014 with a concert from the Salzburg Festival (Alpine Symphony and a selection of orchestral songs) under the baton of Strauss-maniac Christian Thielemann. EUROPEAN MUSIC COUNCIL (EMC)

The next EMC annual conference will take place in 2014 from 19 – 22 June 2014 in the Swiss capital of Bern. In cooperation with the Swiss Music Council and the Yehudi Menuhin Forum Bern, the Forum will evolve around the theme Music & Politics: A shared responsibility. Inspired by the host country, the 4th European Forum on Music will explore what Europe can learn from Switzerland, the so-called “nation of will” ("Wil-lensnation"). The widely acclaimed slogan “unity in diversity” is claimed

by both the European Union and Switzerland as one of their main cha-racteristics. What does this diversity look like? What are the challenges of it? And how is this diversity reflected in Europe? For more information on the event visit the official website: www.emc-imc.org/efm
